Feds to Stop Using Military Base for Immigrant Shelter
Shutting down the military bases marks a major reversal, given that little more than a week ago HHS was reportedly preparing to expand its use of military bases by adding 5,000 more beds.
Health officials said Monday they'll shut down the three emergency shelters for illegal immigrant children they'd opened on military bases, marking yet another sign that the federal government is getting a handle on the surge of Central Americans trying to jump the U.S. border.
The facility at Ft. Sill in Oklahoma will be closed by the end of this week, and two others in California and Texas will shutter in ensuing weeks, the Health and Human Services Department said. Instead, children will be housed at private shelters spread throughout the country.
