The U.S. Congress has begun its August recess, having accomplished little.
Best possible outcome.
Hello.
"Forensic examiners have ruled Eric Garner's death a homicide."
This is getting interesting.
No shit. Can we make this recess last until maybe ... forever?
Yeah, you know you're not in the mainstream when you start cheering a government shut down and hoping it will last forever.
Be careful what you wish for--permanent recess is just what Obama pines for.
"Barack Obama, he's our man!
If he can't do it, no one can!"
Someone on this forum once said "Complaining about a do-nothing Congress is like complaining about a do-nothing rapist."
The House is still in session.
I don't know why they bother. The Senate under Reid is so dysfunctional, they might as well recess until the Senate actually passes something for a change. (SLD, I'd rather nothing passed.)
They're doing it to mess with my Friday afternoon.
Dodged that bullet.

Forensic examiners have ruled Eric Garner's death a homicide.
He has been charged posthumously with his own murder.
Right? If he had an accomplice with him at the time that person would have been been charged in his death, since he was committing a crime that invoked the police response. Using the mangled logic of the current system I'm surprised this wasn't ruled a suicide.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5HNWhVXcjV8
since he was committing a crime that invoked the police response
Except he wasn't. Exactly why they jumped him remains a mystery, but it wasn't because he was selling single cigarettes. Because he wasn't.
Contempt of cop is a capital offense.
Forensic examiners have ruled Eric Garner's death a homicide.
And if you think a cop will do time for said homicide, you're dreaming.
The White House has asked the full D.C. Court of Appeals to reverse the Halbig decision.
Democrat appointed judges. I wonder the outcome.
The case was always going to go to the Supreme Court anyway.
Not if Halbig is reversed. As it stands, it creates a split in the Circuits which generally leads to SCOTUS review.
If the DC Circuit agrees that the words on the page and the legislative history don't matter, the feelz and intentions matter, then I doubt SCOTUS takes this one up. They gotten beaten bloody during the last big OCare case, and let us know they are eager to shirk their Constitutional duty, so . . . .
Thanks, Eeyore.
Same thing I was thinking.
Isn't Brown on the DC Circuit of Appeals, though? She's not likely to rule in favor of socialism if she's part of the full panel.
"Democrat appointed judges." I didn't lookup the judges on that court, but it's likely that at there are some R-appointed judges on the court. Remember these are lifetime appointments.
I read something about Obama's recess appointments tilting the D.C. circuit liberal.
What a way to go:
102-year-old man dies in ATV accident
Disappointed. Would have been cool to see how long he could have lived.
Who knows? Maybe up to 126!
I know a lot of people who got ripped off.
The Cathars were right.
This has to be someone's fault!, we need laws to.... uhh, he was too old to produce any future revenue? Well, just bury the old fuck already.
But don't you dare try and bury him on his own land. http://www.nbclosangeles.com/n.....97671.html
I hope he was running from a pack of angry husbands a third his age. That or preparing to jump off and wrestle a bear are the only two things that could make this story better.
Now I'm picturing a 102-year-old man on an ATV fleeing a pack of angry husbands with pitchforks and torches.
(How did all the husbands find out about this guy at the same time, and despite their outrage were able to organize an angry mob, and stop by their garages to get pitchforks and torch-making tools first?
The dude was 102 years old, whipping around on his ATV, you think a bunch of dudes born in the mid 70s could take him singly? Fuck no. A bunch of hipster husbands were sitting around drinking PBR and talking about how their wives were flaunting their cuckoldry. And then they thought it would ironically cool to chase the guy down with torches and pitchforks. He was gonna let them have their fun, lead them off, then go visit their wives when he had this accident.
clearly they are all married to the women who work at the Rosie the Riveter themed garage in town.
He mass-emailed them with videos of his dastardly debauchery.

Still looking for one that says "Guns Don't Kill People, Bullets Do"
You could probably sell those via CafePress, Zazzle, or whatever without lifting a finger. And should, that is funny. I'd buy one. It would look good next to the GOA sticker on the back window of my pickup*.

Wow, am I out of touch. I had not a clue that foot sniffing was a thing. Explains a lot of weird things in Congress. Hairy Read, for example.
You've never heard of foot fetishes?
Why, yes. I have heard of the foot fetish thingy. I had no idea, NONE, that *sniffing feet* was a thing.
But then, I am a rather uncultured parochial living in flyover country.
Rule 34 and its corollaries. If you can think of something, there is a fetish around it and an internet community devoted to said fetish.
You said it better than I did.
Heck, even Warty has a fan-fiction community now.
Anyone else going to WartyCon next month? Has anyone heard where the undisclosed location is this year?
Only if they have the smeck and fluffers buffet.
You never find out the location until the hood comes off, or the trunk pops open.
We used to have a game where we would take any innocuous topic that we had been chatting about in the office and add "sex.com" and see if there was already a web site devoted to it.
I think clownsex.com was the first one we tried it with and the results were so wonderful that we kept at it. Amazing at how much twisted stuff you learn using this little game.
Libertariansex.com was a general fail, but it went to a good joke.
You need to think harder. Everything that you can think of is a fetish for at least one person out there.

I think that there should be show sort of like a reverse American Idol.
A group of people would get on TV each week and demonstrate their particular kink. Then people would vote for the contestants who they were turned on by.
The one with the most votes would be kicked off (sort of the reverse of Idol). The result that each week the acts get more and more twisted. The winner would be the one with the most twisted appetite in the country.
American Pervert
Warty, Nikki and STEVE SMITH would be the judges.
Wow, I'm a little surprised to not be on that list.
No spitroasts for you, Jimbo.
What if I promise you first supernumerary slot? As soon as one of the first three can no longer hide their chemical addiction on TV, you will get their seat!
You know it won't take all that long.
one of the first three can no longer hide their chemical addiction on TV
I dunno, if I replace Nikki it'll be a total sausage fest.
I think The Aristocrats would be a better title

Political pundit Dick Morris?known for making hilariously wrong predictions?said that he "wouldn't be surprised," if President Obama resigned from office.
If his retirement looks like strolling along the back nine, I think it might have already happened.
Political pundit Dick Morris?known for making hilariously wrong predictions?said that he "wouldn't be surprised," if President Obama resigned from office. (Most rational people would indeed be surprised.)
I'm torn. Obama giving up power? Seems unlikely. Obama taking his ball and going home? Plausible.
Who thinks Michelle and Valerie would even consider letting him resign?
(Most rational people would indeed be surprised.)
You misspelled "relieved".
I'd be surprised in the sense that I don't expect the scumbag to ever voluntarily walk away from power, but is there enough scandal for him to resign? Absolutely. We're well past Watergate levels of corruption and malfeasance.
With one minor difference: this time, almost nobody cares.
It's truly mind-boggling. I mean, a large number of Republicans were trying to get Nixon to resign. It wasn't like they were willing to go down with him. Yet the Democrats are acting very much like they'll ignore almost anything. With the media going right along.
Democrats want him in office a little longer because they are desperately hoping he'll accomplish something, anything so that the disaster that is Obamacare isn't his sole legacy.
Oh, he's accomplishing something. If it weren't for the media going all out to protect Obama and the Democrats, I think we'd be looking at the party blowing to pieces. I mean, come on, they're fucking suicidal.
Why are you so racist as to hate the first black president?
I don't hate him. In fact, I want him to be the first human to set foot on Mars. Like in six months.
If that's a one way ticket, where do I chip in for that?
Calm down, Ted.
PL probably only half-hates him.
I'm coming around to the Gillespie point of view: Obama is actually a radical anarchist dedicated to destroying the State by its own devices.
You've been reading Graves again. But look how well that turned out.
+1 CLAVDIVS
This is not the democratic party of your parents, just remember that. These are hardcore progs, aka leftists, statists, communists.
We all know who they are. The ends justify the means. These people admire Stalin and Mao, nuff said. Obama could murder half the population of the US and they would love him even more for it. You think that merely pissing all over the constitution and rule of law is going to make them suddenly have 2nd thoughts? It's exactly what they want, he hasn't went nearly far enough is the only reason they are disappointed with him.
Yeah, but how many "Democrats" really think that way? I think a large number of them aren't that far gone but go along because the Republicans threaten some single pet issue, like abortion, free contraception, welfare, good taste, evolution in school, whatever. Even though the reality is that the Republicans don't really touch those issues much on a national level.
Almost makes you wonder why the two parties don't craft a backroom deal to not touch certain issues for a pre-defined amount of time and cooperate to purge the undesirables. Unfortunately, the Republicans are too entrenched with special interests and the Democrats have been hijacked by political extremists.
It almost makes you wish that a third party would emerge!
Well, the Stupid Party isn't helping matters any, for sure.
But the sheep will be lead to the slaughter over those pet issues, rather than say 'hey wait a minute, this isn't what I signed up for'. That's why we call them sheep.
I remember talking to one guy on HuffPo a while back and he said 'well, I agree with you libertarians about some stuff, but I don't like you guys because you're always calling me sheep'. And I said 'well, stop being a sheep'.
The answer, Pro L., lies partly within your post. For Nixon, the press was against him, and Republicans didn't want him to take them down with him. Today, the press is firmly pro-Obama, so other Democrats have much less to worry about. (They'll still get their butts kicked in November, though.)
The Dem Party is already in dire danger of becoming a regional party. I mean, the former REPUBLICAN governor of Florida is running as the Democrat candidate and he had no credible challengers. The slate for statewide candidates who aren't former astronauts and sitting senators is appalling. I'm pretty sure Texas fielded more Libertarian candidates than Democratic candidates for statewide office in '12. That's a problem. Eventually, when no amount of money gets your guy elected, its time to start bribing the other guy, you know.
For a very long time, I've thought the LP should focus entirely on state and local elections. They're likely going to win something significant at that level as the Democrats continue to disappear for state politics in some of the "red" states.
Isnt that the Free State Project basically?
I don't mean one state. I mean in each state.
I thought that was sort of the plan, but haven't heard too much about it recently. That and take over the GOP, should be the plan.
Yep. They can make serious inroads within the states, and they only need to be a feared minority (i.e., can swing elections) within the GOP. Look how well that served the SoCons.
For a very long time, I've thought the LP should focus entirely on state and local elections
For a very long time the LP did focus on state and local elections, to the point that they were a real contender third party with members all over the local and minor state offices.
And I agree that they have lost that focus and need to be building more of a support base.
... Hobbit
It's not gone everywhere. Most of the ballot in Austin is either D or L.
The immigrants are going to turn Texas purple.
[ducking]
The bulk of "the press" is still local, though. The press cares about access, and it wouldn't be hard for democrats to use access as a way to get local media on board - which is what most people consume anyway: local news, local paper, etc.
Maybe not a butt kicking, but they probably are going to lose the Senate. And I'm almost 100% sure that their fearless leader is going to do stuff to make that even more likely before November.
The GOP got a lot of the easy gains in 2010, but I sense an awful lot of people very ticked off at Obama: an energized Tea Party, a lot of upset independents, and a lot of demoralized Democrats. I don't see how Obama can do much to help Democrats, and there's a lot he seems to be doing to hurt them.
Of course, the GOP can always blow it, and the media will be ready to pounce if anything happens (or even if nothing does).
You haven't seen anything yet. His last 2 years will be filled with outrageous overreach because he is pissed that people don't love him the way they should, seriously, he's psychotic. He's not as bad as Hillary, but he's still a nut job.

Um, yes? How did you know this?
Vaderficent: The Musical.
Will there be a Chad Vader cameo?
Hell, yeah.
Why do we need a recording when there's already a well done DVD of the original broadway cast, whom I'm sure will be ten times better than whomever the movie scrounged up?
http://www.amazon.com/Into-Woo.....B00001PE59
Stormy, you clearly do not grasp the importance of spin-offs, remakes, sequels, merchandising tie-ins, co-branding, and all the other core components of contemporary art.
I understand that the real version of my favorite musical ever is about to be replaced in the public conciousness by bawlderized crap and it is making me angry.
If they can do it to the Constitution, they'll do it to anything.
In other words, this movie is being made by people who completely missed the whole point of the musical.
In other news, modern versions of Grimm's and other fairy tales are often sanitized for your protection.
And the fact the musical unsanitized them back to their original forms was part of what made Into the Woods great.
Also see: Disney's Maleficent.
Isn't the whole point of "Into the Woods" to be a satire of Disney fairy tales?
The U.S. Congress has begun its August recess, having accomplished little.
I suspect a certain somebody is revving up the Executive Order Generator, and putting fresh ink in his famous pen.
First he gots to pack in those recess appointments.
Dick Morris is one dumb mofo. Obama resign? Yeah, right. That fuckwad is going to do some outrageously ridiculous and inflammatory shit in his last 2 years, and no matter how bad it is, he will not resign and will never be held accountable for any of it. And he knows this, which is why we are going to see some crazy stuff out of this asshole in the near future. We are already seeing it, but it's going to get much worse.
He knows his place in the history books is already established. He knew coming into the job that he could do whatever he wanted and his legacy would come out fine. He's exploiting that.
I don't think that Obama will be held in any sort of esteem as a historical figure of importance in the future. There will be only the 'first black president'. He has accomplished absolutely nothing good, and he will never hold any type of historical significance outside of first black potus. If he keeps his shit up though, he might attain some additional fame, although it will be of the notoriety type.
Exactly. "First black president" and let's not really dwell on the rest.
The historical revisionism will be strong. There's no way that the first black president isn't one of the greatest statesmen of all time. Twenty five years from now this guy will be a saint, practically untouchable.
I'm sort of hoping that by 25 years from now all of the race based and identity based shit that we are wading through will be over with. If it's isn't, I'm not sure we'll last that long, we'll probably have already killed off each other through ignorant hatred stirred up by evil politicians and their perpetual victim class.
They already did it for the first Irish.
Coming next decade:
Barack Obama is:
Kennedy 2: revisionist boogaloo.
This.
Wilson was a wholly detestable, speech stomping, propagandizing, warmongering, KKK supporting monster and he is still held up as an example of the "good president."
Compared to some of the monsters the Democrats have given us as presidents, Obama is pretty mild, making his "legacy" that much easier to sanitize.
He's working hard to be "Last Black President"
When he leaves office, there will be a street in every major city named after him. And it will intersect with MLK Avenue in every major city.
When he dies, they will erect a statue on the WA Mall.
As much as this makes me physically ill to contemplate, it is the truth.
He's exploiting that.
Blaxploitation?
He's just trolling for a slot on Hannity.
Maybe he wagered a friend that he could get over a thousand mentions on MSNBC in 24 hours.
Obama's legacy (as per the fellow travelers):
1. First Black President
2. Nobel Peace Prize Winner
3. Ended Iraq War
4. Passed Obamacare
5. Led America Out of a Depression/Recession
Calling it now. Get back at me in 10 years when the textbooks are written.
^ Pretty much this. I admire the optimism of the people who think he'll be remembered as corrupt, imperial, and feckless, but I don't think they reside in the same reality that I do.
And no doubt there will be in the near future a hagiography along the lines of Spielberg's Lincoln, showing Obama courageously fighting for health care for everyone, despite the nasty machinations of the mean Republicans and greedy businessmen. 10-1 says the movie will feature a plucky little boy/girl whose life is saved because of Obamacare, all while violins crescendo.
*** tramples out the vineyards where the grapes of wrath are stored ***
You know I never saw the end of that movie. It was either too terrible and my wife turned on Modern Family and I got on my computer, or I just wasn't into it and spent fifteen minutes in the kitchen downing as much gin as my throat would handle. Either is a strong possibility, and neither of us were getting into the movie. I'm pretty sure I won't ever see it, either.
After saving the plucky boy, does he bring him to the white house, give him a new set of warm pajamas and a cup of hot chocolate?
They already did it in Canada for the first premier to push government healthcare.
Down to presenting his opponent as a drunkard (despite the fact he was a teetotaller in real life).
Yep...and don't forget that he accomplished all this in the face of fierce resistance by the party of old white men from the South.

On Wednesday, Russia announced a ban on some fruit and vegetable imports - including apples - from Poland "for sanitary reasons".
I'm sure all those "eat local!" twats will be thrilled.
Newark Liberty and John F. Kennedy airports are among 20 ports of entry locations in the U.S. with quarantine stations that have been staffed with health officials trained to look for symptoms of Ebola in passengers.
Waste of money. Existing TSA agents can be trained to do that. I mean, it's harder to recognize a DC driver's license than Ebola symptoms.
No, the more you expand the scope of their authority the more power they get. We'll probably never get rid of TSA, but the last thing we want is to further empower them.
Semi-OT: Local Craigslist has a "missed connections" ad from a guy who thinks a local TSA inspectorette is hot. Should I post a rant about how they are the worst people ever and encourage him to find someone else to satisfy his uniform, cop and cavity search fetishes?
Encourage him in the most sarcastic manner possible. Much better choice.
I don't get it.
Go for it man! Follow your dream of a blue gloved sadist who enjoys groping little old ladies and fondling their colostomy bags! There's someone for everyone!

Thanks, Scruffy.
Oh man, there was a complete hottie of a TSA agent at PDX when I was up there last time. Dark hair, scruffy, blue-eyed, friendly and helpful. Had he been working the scanner I would've requested a patdown.
Actually my experience with TSA in PDX and MSY were both radical departures from my experience at other airports. But now I have TSA Precheck for 5 years and I don't have to deal with them for more than 5 seconds.
Obviously they didn't check your search history.
TSA Pre-Check is so awesome. I have to fly a lot and it is so nice to just waltz to the front of the line, while keeping on your shoes, belt and blazer, then go through the simple scanner instead of the MRI-style machine, and be done with all security in less than three minutes.
Best 80 bucks I ever spent; it's like pre-9/11 travel. Strongly encourage everyone to get it.
$100 for 5 years if you go for Global Entry which includes expedited customs if you travel abroad. It took me a few months to get an interview, but when I did it took 10 minutes with the agent mostly apologizing because they were so busy razzing a coworker.
The TSA agents will just kill carriers, ending the contagion. Or so they think.

I was thinking about it and could not come up with a possible scenario where that would be anything other than backing up your music collection for your own enjoyment.
Its a suit that they could use against any musical device that buffers music into software memory. Its function is then primarily to record copyrighted material from the media distributed by the copyright owners permitted distributor.
I bet you didn't think about pumping up the bass so everyone within 150' of you could enjoy it. Did ya?
Because fuck you, that's why?
Or it's a penalty and a tax?
But if you rip all your CDs and then sell the car you are illegally selling digital music! Oh, sure, you *forgot* to delete the files before you sold the car! You damn pirates are ruining the music industry!

Since when are cars and trucks marketed as musical recording devices?

Quick suvey shows = most buildings are fire traps, we probably paid for all the Taliban's guns, the Afghan army are all on drugs, and we've made the local warlords rich.
I say this without the slightest bit of sarcasm: The very best thing that could happen to the Democrats is for Obama to leave office early. Regardless of how that happens--removal, resignation, declared incompetent by Biden, whatever.
Yep. Impeachment would be a win-win for them. They get what they want, and get to blame someone else.
Biden would probably get re-elected which would thwart Hillary's ambitions. Biden and Warren are both progressives so we'd probably see VP Warren then President Warren.
Let's say the GOP, when they get control of both houses, gets smoking-gun evidence that allows them to impeach and convict Obama and some other officials. The Democrats will, if the situation is obvious enough, turn on Obama at the last minute, especially if he refuses to resign. So they don't necessarily lose anything, and they get that albatross off from around their neck.
As much as Democrats think an impeachment helps them politically, I don't think any but the truly deluded think this is all smoke. The massive investigation that would be launched would uncover enough to really hurt not just Obama but a good number of appointees and likely members of Congress. All that glee about impeachment is for the rabble.
Well, we're going to see, because the Dems ARE going to lose the Senate. Ok, I take that back, at this point, I would say that there is about an 80% chance that the GOP will take the Senate. I don't think those odds are going to get better for the Dems as it gets closer to the election. In fact, I think it will get worse for the dems and that by Mid Oct, the odds will be more like an 85-90% percent odds that the GOP take the Senate. Anyway, it's likely that the GOP are going to control both houses next year.
And one more prediction. The GOP will not vote to impeach Obama , no matter what he does. They are cowards, too afraid that the playground bullies will call them bad names. You know, like racist.
I don't think they'll impeach him, either, barring something really bad that gets the public and the media turned totally against him. But I do think there's a shitstorm coming, and I bet they remove some other officials.
The First Black President(tm) thing is a huge shield for him. I don't see impeachment happening absent truly damning evidence of direct personal involvement.
The Biden-Warren arc was purely theoretical. That would also be worse than eight years of Hillary.
"declared incompetent by Biden"
Savor that. Roll that drop around on your tongue a while and imagine a whole glass full of it. Mmmm, that's smooth.
And everyone secretly loves Joe. Heck, part of me wants to experience the surreality that is the Biden presidency.
A Camaro in every garage! The national seal featuring an eagle with a mullet!
"Today President Biden declared war on Estonia, Lichtenstein, and a couple of unnamed Arab Emirates."
He would so rule. I still think he should be named permanent Vice President. He so encapsulates the character of the office.
Please, PLEASE, let Obama declare this by Executive Order.

"The NSA stores your calls to GameStop, doesn't it?"
Well, the advent of digital delivery did annihilate their entire business model, but you have to admire their ability to find ways to commit suicide faster.
Even worse than Radio Shack. I didn't think that was possible.
They can go fuck themselves, that is exactly what I would tell them. I don't kids toys anyway, real men use PCs for gaming.
I am in the uncomfortable position of agreeing with racist bigots. I don't think the guy should be teaching AA studies either, but for different reasons than they do.

""We didn't fight for a white male or female teacher to educate our babies."
Crozier, who appears to be a professor at Fresno Pacific Biblical Seminary, also suggested that a white person cannot teach minority children in this instance because of racism."
FTA: "We're all faced today with so much dysfunction and violence from young people, and that violence is simply because they don't know who they are, they don't know where they come from," he proclaimed.
Yeah, that's the problem.
I was going to say is precisely because they know exactly who they are and exactly where they come from. Kids are generally smart and school is there to dumb them down.
Pull the other one.
Obviously. But not in the way the statement intended. Also, are white people with no definite sex okay to teach their babies?
May Crozier's tongue cleave to the roof of her mouth.
The D.C. Court of Appeals and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit are different courts.
I'll bet they often get each other's mail.
"Restaurant's 'Praying In Public' Discount Returns Praise, Ire; Religious Freedom Or Discrimination?...
"An image that shows a receipt including a 15% discount for praying in public has been going viral since an Orland, Florida radio station posted it yesterday....
"Jeff Wagg, a representative of the James Randi Education Foundation tells the story, too, about a similar case in which a Denny's restaurant offered a discount to those coming from church, but couldn't tell him how a nonreligious person might apply for the same discount.
"Writing to the corporation, Wagg said,
""Though I am not an attorney, I believe your promotion may violate Title II of the Civil Rights Act of 1964.""
http://www.inquisitr.com/13855.....imination/
(there seems to be some sort of autoplay music on this story)
Last I checked, most churches were open to all-comers. Hell, don't even stay for the whole service. Just go in, get a program, sit around for about 15 minutes, *BOOM* discount.
You don't even have to wait for them to hit you up for a tithe.
You don't even have to wait for them to hit you up for a tithe.
Most dont expect, or even want, guests to give.
So all you have to do is sit there, bow your head for a minute and get the discount?
I wonder if Jeff Wagg threatens bars with Ladies Night promotions because it's sexist.
"Beware of practicing your piety before others in order to be seen by them; for then you have no reward from your Father in heaven." Matthew 6:1
And this is the battle the skeptics choose to fight?
Wagg is a fool.
Trigger warning -- rant:
I'm a bit annoyed about ENB's "You Can't Stop the Dark Net" piece from earlier today.
"The Dark Net" does not exist; there are various darknets. They are classified as such based on network topology (friend-to-friend or similar) and technology stack (e.g., Freenet or GNUnet).
"The Deep Web", on the other hand, is an umbrella term for content not indexed by traditional search engines like Google, Bing, Yandex, or Baidu. It doesn't say much about the technology or content otherwise; something in the Deep Web could be anything from a password-protected message board accessible without any software beyond a web browser to illicit marketplaces accessible via Tor or I2P.
See the Wikipedia articles for each for more info.
Of course, that is more the BBC's fault than ENB's, as they were using that faulty terminology in the piece she based hers upon.
I have yet to see a "dark net" article not be mostly bullshit.
India hires mimics to scare away parliament monkeys
I wonder if we could employ a version of this here in the States, only the goal would be to scare congresscritters away from the capitol?
... sounds like our crazy Uncle Joe Biden.
I wonder if we could employ a version of this here in the States, only the goal would be to scare congresscritters away from the capitol?
Would our version be carrying pitchforks and torches?
Would our version be carrying pitchforks and torches?
That's a good start...
I saw Parliament Monkeys back in '94. They opened for Close Lobsters.
"Why It's Time to Repeal the Religious Freedom Restoration Act
"The law, passed in 1993 with near-unanimous support, has become an excuse for bigotry, superstition and sectarianism.
"Katha Pollitt...
"... the bill was a response to the Supreme Court's decision in Employment Division v. Smith. This case involved two Oregon members of the Native American Church who were denied unemployment compensation after being fired for using peyote, an illegal drug, in a religious ceremony. Justice Antonin Scalia's majority opinion, which held that a law that applied to everyone and was not directed at religion specifically was not a violation of religious freedom, made a lot of sense to me, then and now. Why should I have to obey a law and my religious neighbor not?...
"What were progressives thinking? Maybe in 1993, religion looked like a stronger progressive force than it turned out to be, or maybe freedom of religion looked like a politically neutral good thing. Two decades later, it's clear that the main beneficiaries of RFRA are the Christian right and other religious conservatives."

They really let the mask slip there don't they?

Cynical as I am, even I'm a little taken aback at such a straightforward admission that Progressives are unprincipled hacks.
That is rather blatant.
"Maybe in 1993, religion looked like a stronger progressive force than it turned out to be..."
Once again they admit that they have no use for objective truth or for principle. For them truth is anything that advances the narrative, sound principles are any that further their agenda.
What was good yesterday is bad today.
So it's good until the wrong people avail themselves to it. I think that proves RC point.

Hess' Traingle: New York City's smallest piece of private property
Pic
What are the property taxes?
If I wasn't lazy, I'd look up and link a similar (but slightly larger) piece of property like that which was in dispute and held up a lot of discussion over renovations and expansion at Wrigley Field.
What are the property taxes?
The means by which the USA state and local governments outlawed all private ownership of property.
Which is why I could never be a Georgist.
Awesome

Scientist who claims fracking is dangerous and argues against drilling applications is a 'fraud who has lied about his credentials'
Note: The scientist in question is the former bassist for The Rezillos.
its a little known fact = the science behind fracking is almost entirely dominated by ex bass-players.
*passes joint* Dude, what if your bass playing was, like, literally earth-shattering?
Luddites.
Did you know that it rains diamonds on Saturn and Jupiter?
We just need to take all of these church of global warming, anti-fracking, anti-GMO, luddites and quarantine them off somewhere, where they are forced to live by their own wishes. Make it a reality TV show.

Is Sachsenhausen still in good working order?
I played a role in Into the Woods in a high school musical. Fuck Sondheim.
I don't think you're showing what you mean to be showing.
Compared to who? Cause it ain't men.
How would you describe a population whose bodies are objectified to the point of dehumanization?
Well, obviously, the Muslims have the only answer, put them all in a burqa and tell em to shut the fuck up already.
I'm having a hard time understanding how ogling some hottie is dehumanizing. It is quite the opposite.
It's the most worstest thing ever. Meanwhile, thismeans you're obviously a privileged shitlord.
I mean, they're so objectified that boko haram is kidnapping them. What could possibly be worse than that? I haven't even heard much about it, they're treated so much like objects.
tha fuck?
Seems like a corollary to Poe's law:
For every completely exaggerated caricature of any position you can come up with, there's a person that actually matches it.
I swear this is not the onion
When did it become OK for women to hit people unprovoked?
When men stopped being people?
Awesome Pro L.
I love how women claim to be able to do anything just as well or better than a man--except take a right hook. Suddenly when the fists start flying they delicate flowers who need protecting.
No comments on this:
Cause I've heard all the other bullshit before, but the use of that word referencing the host of The View made it actively surreal.
"...do not live with this idea that men have this chivalry thing still with them..."
There's also the feminist idea that, at least in critiquing fiction, that chivalry is an offensively sexist notion to begin with. A male character who will not fight women is disrespecting women. How exactly do you culturally transmit the notion that a man using violence against women is only the very last resort if you treat that as a bad thing in stories?
Somebody has PZ's number, and he's pissed.
PZ's response:
Nah. I expect 102 year old to go on a testosterone-fueled binge by shooting up city hall or something productive like that. This guy was just a selfish bastard.
They made, like, a billion dollars from selling Tandy. And lost about $25M/year.
Ob theOnion: Even CEO Can't Figure Out How RadioShack Still In Business
Testosterone fulled at 102? Seems unlikely.
Can I have your phone number?
Yeah, and $9 for a computer power cable, well, yeah.
"Even the name 'RadioShack'?can you imagine two less appealing words placed next to one another?" Day said. "What is that, some kind of World War II terminology?
