A congressional lawsuit over presidential overreach in unilaterally setting and changing policy won a thumbs-up from the House Rules Committee. Don't get your hopes up—Barry will be collecting hefty speaking fees long before this makes its way through the courts.

  • Youths in Central America seeking access to the U.S. may gain refugee status in an Obama administration plan to save a few lives that might be lost on the long trek north.
  • The latest effort to make an execution as incompetent and gruesome as possible, this time in Arizona, gives new energy to opponents of the death penalty.
  • Officials in Norway say their country faces an imminent threat from Islamic terrorists. Is ISIS pining for the fjords?
  • You may safely goof off, again: U.S. companies have cut way back on layoffs as the job market firms up.
  • Ukraine's beleaguered prime minister resigned after his parliamentary coalition collapsed. Arseniy Yatsenyuk and his cabinet will remain in place until elections can be held in October. Or until Putin is running the place, whichever comes first.

Officials in Norway say their country faces an imminent threat from Islamic terrorists. Is ISIS pining for the fjords?

They hate them for their fjreedom.

    1. Ted S.   11 years ago

That comment could probably fit the Ukraine story, too.

    2. Andrew S.   11 years ago

A m??se once bit my sister.

Moose knuckles bit your sister's camel toe?

      2. Mad Scientist   11 years ago

Moose bites can be pretty nasti.

    3. Tonio   11 years ago

      "fjreedom" Good one, Fist.

U.S. companies have cut way back on layoffs as the job market firms up.

They have no one left to cut.

    1. Bobarian   11 years ago

      Thank you, Nancy!

      1. Tonio   11 years ago

Nancy and "firms up" do not belong in the same discussion.

    2. Francisco d'Anconia   11 years ago

Wow, that's two witticisms in a row that were actually funny. Fist is rolling.

Barry will be collecting hefty speaking fees long before this makes its way through the courts.

Yeah, it's a pity our Constitutional form of government lacks any useful and timely mechanism for Congress to express its deep and broad disapproval with the President's performance.

    1. Auric Demonocles   11 years ago

The Constitution should have included a Congressional "rocks from space" clause.

    2. PD Scott   11 years ago

They could unfriend him on Facebook. That'd show 'im.

      1. hamilton   11 years ago

For this President that might actually work.

  4. Rufus J. Firefly   11 years ago

    Hello.

Islamic terrorists, I would think, would have a hard time blending in Norway - what with all the blue eyed blondes.

    1. Rainbow   11 years ago

Let's ask Geir Elvis about that.

        1. lap83   11 years ago

I'm pretty sure it's only on Netflix

    2. Suthenboy   11 years ago

Unfortunately those dumbasses have let swarms of vermin into their country. It is too easy for them to blend in.

      1. ?nus   11 years ago

Ah so is Norway where Pied Piper took all the rats?

      2. Tonio   11 years ago

Leaving aside your characterization of those human beings as vermin, they still don't really blend in except in certain neighborhoods in the larger cities.

        1. Pl?ya Manhattan.   11 years ago

My brother is off to Las Vegas for our cousin's bachelor party (I was supposed to go, but couldn't take the days off work). He's a 28 year old with an office job; my cousin and his friends are all either in the Air Force or just got out of the Air Force.

The last time they were all together was at my cousin's first wedding (yeah, his second wedding and he hasn't quite turned 26 yet), I was probably the only thing that stood between my brother and severe alcohol poisoning, as he continually tried to keep up with the Air Force guys in alcohol consumption.

I fear for his life without me there.

    1. Rufus J. Firefly   11 years ago

      You can't protect him forever.

      1. Andrew S.   11 years ago

Yeah, but I'd rather him not die, all things being equal.

        Slacker generation

      2. Almanian!   11 years ago

My wife and I had kid #1 when we were 26. I do not regret this, as I will not be 70 and raising kids.

OTOH, not being married at all and having no kids also presents certain benefits.

        1. Andrew S.   11 years ago

He had a kid with his first wife a few months before his 21st birthday.

(she then cheated on him when he was in Afghanistan. bitch.)

          1. Almanian!   11 years ago

That's a bitch. ironically, my brother's only wife cheated on him while he was in Iraq (Desert Storm in the early 90's) and he dumped her ass before any kids were created.

Bitch Who Shall Not Be Named is what we call her to this day.

            1. The Last American Hero   11 years ago

Desert Storm? Seriously? Wasn't that one over in a long weekend?

              1. Steve G   11 years ago

marines..marines.. oh yeah, those are the guys who started making out with each other after two beers at the hooch in Dj while the rest of us handled our liquor. I'll pit an AF Ammo dude up against a marine at the bar any day.

          1. jesse.in.mb   11 years ago

The latest effort to make an execution as incompetent and gruesome as possible, this time in Arizona, gives new energy to opponents of the death penalty.

Right, quick or cheap. Pick two.

    1. Andrew S.   11 years ago

I'll take "Right". Unfortunately, we don't have any of the 3 right now.

Not like I could trust the state to fairly mete out the death penalty without killing any innocent people.

    2. Karl Hungus   11 years ago

Right, quick or cheap. Pick two.

I think a bullet would satisfy all three.

      1. robc   11 years ago

Not if you shoot an innocent man.

        1. Karl Hungus   11 years ago

Not if you shoot an innocent man.

I interpreted "right" to mean "not botched" rather than "the right person."

But yeah, that's why I oppose capital punishment. That and I don't think the state should be able to kill as punishment.

Officials in Norway say their country faces an imminent threat from Islamic terrorists. Is ISIS pining for the fjords?

Gunmen in Afghanistan have shot dead two Finnish women working for a Christian aid charity in the western city of Herat, officials say.

Maybe they are on to something.

    1. The Last American Hero   11 years ago

I can't find Herat on the map of Finland. Or for that matter on the map of Europe.

      1. Steve G   11 years ago

No shit. If a charity wants to help, fine, but pull the christian nametag off before you go, otherwise proselytizing is basically implied.

  11. Suthenboy   11 years ago

I see Mr. Thompson gave another speech today written by Wesley Mouch railing against people going Galt. How precious.

"The president has made clear that these companies are essentially renouncing their American citizenship by shipping their profits overseas to avoid paying taxes even as they benefit from all the advantages of being here in America," White House spokesman Eric Schultz said ahead of Obama's remarks. "That's precisely what we mean by economic patriotism."

    S. Korean government: We're going to steal businesses' capital reserves

The government, on the other hand, will tax companies that shy away from investment, wage increases or dividend payments in favor of hanging onto excessive cash reserves.
The government also plans to accelerate regulatory reforms, especially those linked to bolstering the nation's real estate market, by giving home buyers easier access to mortgage loans.

And they're going to inflate a housing bubble, too!

Canadian government hopes to unveil legislation in the fall to ease regulations for gun owners

The Canadian government plans to introduce proposed legislation that would make life easier for many Canadian gun owners.

As CBC News first reported, the government is planning new legislation aimed at cutting red tape. However, the Common Sense Firearms Licensing Act also will include measures intended to show the government takes gun safety seriously.

No more ATTs it looks like. So, small win.

    3. gimmeasammich   11 years ago

Wait, what is all of that about the Swiss Arms Classic Green? So a Sig 556 was legal up until recently? Or was it just for police use?

      1. rts   11 years ago

The RCMP reclassified that firearm as prohibited, for no real good reason. Owners would have to apply for a "prohibited" license (very difficult to get) or turn in their firearms.

This legislation will return them to their previous classification ("restricted" I think).

      2. gimmeasammich   11 years ago

So are they currently being imported, or is there some sort of grandfathering scheme with them?

The weakness at the beginning of 2014 in the United States - the economy contracted sharply in the first three months - will affect the figure for the whole year.

The economy contracted in the first three months? Probably because we live in a 'throwaway society'.

    1. Rainbow   11 years ago

So when are the Q2 numbers going to be unxpectedly revised and somebody finds themselves once again *officially* in recession?

It's the fear of being labelled colonialist, Marsh. Remember that all cultures have equal validity, even ones that oppress* women and religious people. Muslims are especially appeased in this regard in our foreign policy.

(*)Real oppression, not the whiny manufactured pseudo-oppression from which US religiots claim to suffer.

"SALT LAKE CITY (AP) ? Cities and towns throughout Utah are celebrating the state's hardscrabble heritage Thursday, with parades, rodeos, concerts and more marking the arrival of Mormon pioneers to the Salt Lake Valley on July 24, 1847.

"The cornerstone of the annual Pioneer Day celebration is the downtown Salt Lake City parade, with thousands of spectators lining the route Thursday morning to watch the procession of elaborate floats, marching bands and local officials.

"The parade is among the oldest in the country, having first been held in 1849."

The real people with PTSD aren't talking about it. They believe that you would never understand anyway. They aren't proud to be damaged. So a vocal PTSD claim can be viewed as suspect, gents.

Vast numbers of crimes at all levels are passed because politicians are responding to some outcry. E.g. in Ohio it was (maybe still is) a crime for a music teacher to have sex with an underage student. The fact that a more general law already made it illegal was irrelevant: there was a crime and Something Must Be Done.

Scientists at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) have discovered that a gold nanorod submerged in water and exposed to high-frequency ultrasound waves can spin at an incredible speed of 150,000 RPM, about ten times faster than the previous record. The advance could lead to powerful nanomotors with important applications in medicine, high-speed machining, and the mixing of materials.

Homeowner Guns Down Intruder Who Said She Was Pregnant

The intruders, a man and woman, may have underestimated Greer, he said, as they ransacked his safe and yanked the door open right in front of him.

The intruders threw Greer to the ground, but they didn't know he'd gotten his .22-caliber Smith and Wesson revolver.

Read: Man Accused of Killing Daughter, Wife Found Nearly 20 Years Later Living With New Family
"I come back and they see me with a gun, and they run," he said.

The man escaped, but the woman fell after being struck by Greer's gunfire in an alley behind the house.

"She says, 'Don't shoot me, I'm pregnant! I'm going to have a baby!' And I shot her anyway," Greer said.

When asked what he saw happen to the woman after he fired shots, Greer responded: "She was dead. I shot her twice, she best be dead ... (The man) had run off and left her."

    Robots mean communism

The thing is, just because in the past new fields have always opened up as others became obsolete doesn't mean this will always be the pattern in the future, and in fact, we don't necessarily want it to be. Isn't a future where we can do whatever we are passionate about while our robots do everything we dislike something we should be striving for?

The problem is that a society without jobs is a society that cannot sustain a capitalist economy. If we want to live in a future where robots are doing all our work for us so we can sit around and enjoy free time to follow our passions, we would need to come up with a new economic system that allows people to have resources without having jobs.

    1. Coeus   11 years ago

A future society that chooses an economic system closer to socialism than capitalism may not do so bad in a robot world. There are obviously other things to consider, such as who decides who gets what and the consolidation of power. Future generations will perhaps come up with some sort of hybrid system that is able to democratically divvy up resources gained from our robots.

If we do end up with this idealized robot future, I don't know what type of economic system we would have but I know for certain that we wouldn't be able to sustain the capitalist system we have today.

A man charged with killing an unarmed black woman on his suburban Detroit porch in November initially told police it was an accident, a jury has heard.

Theodore Wafer, 55, said he did not know his shotgun was loaded, according to recorded remarks played at trial.

Anybody that tries to use a childish excuse like that... just no. Guilty.

Do women need bigger parking spaces?

Special parking spaces for women in China

A shopping mall in China has sparked controversy after allocating extra wide spaces for women. They're marked out in pink with the message "Ladies Only". They give about 11 inches (28cm) more room than the average space.

I would pay money to see this posted all over Jezebel.

    1. Almanian!   11 years ago

Thoughts on my first programming conference

Last night, at the Software Carpentry mixer, a grand total of 5 men shook my husband's hand and ignored mine. My total of new people met is a dismal ten. Compare it to the Evolution meetings, which is 'my' meeting, where I met upwards of 40 new people, had a blast, and was treated by all participants like a member of the community.

And that's the kicker. I didn't have a good time and I won't be attending future programming conferences, unless they're explicitly for women. I have no incentive to. I didn't feel lonely as a pythonista until this week. I didn't feel like I didn't belong before this week. Before this week, I had a lot of friends who like what I'm doing and think I'm cool. Now I know that's an isolated thing.

That's sad. Wonder what the difference was?

    Oh, right:

Note: This year, SciPy had a Code of Conduct, which is great.

If someone shakes hands with your husband, and your husband does not then introduce you, it's your husband's fault.

    3. Stormy Dragon   11 years ago

As I was crying myself to sleep last night, my husband asked me a very good question: 'Why do you hang out with these people?'

How often does this happen, such that her husband's reaction to his wife bursting into tears in bed is not concern but rather "ugh, here we go again!?" exasperation?

    2. Stormy Dragon   11 years ago

It's really simple: Voyager 1 is 121 AUs from the sun. The Oort Cloud is 50,000 AUs from the sun.

As the Oort Cloud is clearly part of our solar system, Voyager 1 isn't even one percent of the way to interstellar space.

Anytime they announce otherwise, it just means they want to remind people that Voyager 1 still exists.

Heather Mac Donald may be the biggest cop-lover out there. FTA:

It was Garner's resistance to arrest which triggered the events leading to his death

    Whole thing here:

    http://www.city-journal.org/2014/eon0723hm.html

    1. Sidd Finch v2.01   11 years ago

Anger over Garner's death is understandable. No one should die for selling untaxed cigarettes or even for resisting arrest, though the officers certainly did not intend to kill Garner, and a takedown may be justified when a suspect resists. Protests initially centered on the officer's seeming use of a chokehold, which is banned by the NYPD and is thus against departmental policy. But NYPD critics have now expanded the campaign against the police to include misdemeanor enforcement?such as against Garner's illegal vending?itself. This is pure opportunism. There is no connection between the theory and practice of quality-of-life enforcement, on the one hand, and Garner's death, on the other. It was Garner's resistance to arrest which triggered the events leading to his death, however disproportionate that outcome, not the policing of illegal cigarette sales.

      history's greatest monster?

      1. Raven Nation   11 years ago

And, in general, I think Broken Windows policing works. But Mac Donald is really expanding the meaning of that policy. And the comments at City Journal are derp filled.

        Sample:

The brutal truth of the matter is that the man did not weigh 350# because he was disciplined and did not have 30 arrests in his past because he had an excess of regard for authority. If he made a habit of being contentious and impetuous, this was just another episode. People like him might do less of it if there were not pseudo-authorities like Diane Pagen encouraging them.

TBF there are some critics in the comments too.

        1. PapayaSF   11 years ago

The guy had been arrest 30 times? Sheesh.

        2. RussianPrimeMinister   11 years ago

It certainly doesn't matter if the law is petty, and designed with the sole aim of stealing the wealth of the citizenry.

No, indeed, what matters here is that this man, nay, this monster, did not obey the commands of those sent to enforce this theft of wealth.

Verily, failure to obey is punishable by death.

          So say we all.

Harassment policies, as anyone with a brain predicted, have a chilling effect on intersex discourse at conferences.

The other conference she refers to, the one she had a great time at? No harassment policy.
