Tonight on The Independents: Revenge of the Nerds! How Super-Geeks Have Remade Culture, Sports, Technology, and Government

Tonight on The Independents: A special theme show on how nerds have changed the world. Kennedy and Kmele Foster will be on set, but regular co-host Matt Welch is out for the evening. Special guest nerd and Reason Senior Editor Peter Suderman—that's me!—is filling in.
It's on at 9 p.m. ET on the Fox Business Network, with a second showing at midnight.
The show will start with a panel discussion covering what nerds are, how they came to cultural prominence, and whether they're awesome or awful.
Regular guests Gavin McInnes and Andy Levy will be on hand to share their wisdom, and I can promise you this: There will be references to both Star Trek and Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
Next we'll talk to Ben Lindbergh, the stats-nerd editor of stats-nerd sports journal Baseball Prospectus, about how stats-nerd sports nuts have changed America's pastime.
Hacker nerd Chris Wysopal of Veracode, who once testified before Congress about the power that nerds wield over the Internet, will come on to discuss nerds and technology.

And Reason's very own Managing Editor Katherine Mangu-Ward, who seems to have some musical nerd-history of her own, will show up to argue that libertarians are the nerds of politics—and that's why they're cool.
Later in the show: Levy and McInnes come back to play a Super Secret Nerd Word Game, the whole crew talks about their own personal nerd heroes, and I may or may not attempt to connect childhood comic-book fandom with understanding Congress.
There will be: So. Much Nerdiness. 9 p.m. ET Fox Business. Tune in!

I'm confused.
He's out changing the world.
No, he's just polling millennials.
Then Emily is going to kick his ass.
And the last poll is enough to make you weep.
Another self congratulatory roundtable? Gah.
libertarians are the nerds of politics?and that's why they're cool.
Oh, nerds. Always trying to tell themselves that they're the real cool kids. But no one ever listens. Except mom, she believed me. Them. She believes them.
Also, the ugly girls are beautiful on the inside, the stupid kids are really smart in their own way, and the fat kids have great personalities.
I thought it was: the ugly girls are really knockouts, after a light makeover.
And a montage.
The way I remember it, nerds became cool right around the time that a handful of them started becoming billionaires.
Well, the cool kids from my HS voted most likely to succeed are a farmers wife and a chauffeur.
I may not be cool, but I'm not a chauffeur. NTTAWWT!
I wonder if Suderman has Megan dress up like Padme.
I was thinking Jar Jar Binks.
Golden Bikini, collar and everything
Somewhere on the internet is a photoshop of Jar Jar wearing the slave Leia outfit.
And I'm not looking for it.
"...will show up to argue that libertarians are the nerds of politics?and that's why they're cool."
Libertarians, they're with it.
libertarians are the nerds of politics?and that's why they're cool.
It's always cool down in the basement.
But I dont wanna go?
Since when does Warty give you a choice?
I will say that most libertarians tend to be very well read in their political/economic beliefs - more so than the people buying into the Team Red/Blue schtick.
If that makes them nerds, oh well?

I think this clip might be on the show.
Ogre was Ken Shultz's neighbor for a while. Ogre is actually quite an intellectual.
Earlier today, I asked what the effectiveness rate of Israel's Iron Dome was.
Looks like its 90%.

I admit, I'm what most people would call a nerd, but I get paid well for it.
What I have a problem with is people assuming that because I'm an engineer, it means I can't order a hamburger without stuttering or making a sci-fi reference. People automatically think of the characters on The Big Band Theory. God I hate that show.
"An'a one an'a two!"
"The Big Band Theory."
You stuttering prick you.
It's an old video game injury that makes my finger twitch.
That's because they're confusing nerds, geeks, and dorks.
Nerds: expert mastery of an intellectual subject
Geek: obssession with an esoteric hobby
Dork: social awkwardness and anxiety
Can't I be all three?
I have 9 levels in Nerd, 7 levels in Geek (which uses CHA instead of INT for spellcasting), and 3 levels of Dork, for the Bonus Feat.
I am Pliith'Obligana a duel class rogue level 7 mage level 5 High-Elf Princess of the Northern Myst woods of Yi'zethristnowqqxi.
And I think Potsie Weber was the original nerd and I dare say he wasn't a aster of anything Intellectual.

"Senior Editor Peter Suderman?that's me!?is filling in."
....
Well, we can only hope for the best.
Our favorite version of Suderman? comes in his pin-striped suit, a loose-collared blue-on-blue shirt/tie, and the Shit-Eating Grin That Swallowed the Universe
Suderman Low Points have included the 'faux hawk' on his first appearance, mysteriously-vanishing shoulder blades, and occasional Welch-esque color combinations. Which can look great...if you're an Australian Game-Show Host.
There was also that weird technical problem last time that made his blazer look purple. Blame the backdrop, i guess.
I promise it was actually blue.
The video-replay (6.23?) vindicates you entirely
The live broadcast, however, resulted in some mutually-shared hallucinations.
Nice tie, btw.
In retrospect, its possible Kmele and His Amazing Technicolor-Plaid DreamShirt was partly to blame. Corneas were seared.
I want to know what the hell that guy sitting behind Koskinen is wearing?
Was there a gay mariachi wedding just after the IRS hearing?
That makes a lot of sense dude.

I am taking requests for who will be featured in tonight's games of Spot the Not!
Jesse Ventura has been suggested. I plan to feature Paul Krugman as well.
Valerie Jarret
Thomas Friedman.
Ruth Bader Ginsburg.
Shriek
Debbie Wasserman Shwartzenheimerstein
Raaa......cist?
I'm almost half-jewish so its ok.
I married one, I get a pass.
Jesse Myerson, aka the commie.
ooh, i second that.
So much of his style is jauntily dismissive tone and hand gesticulation though.
true that. He had a way of gliding over 'details' like the state-sanctioned-murder-of-millions with a certain tired, "'yes yes, we *know*... your fixation on this 'death' stuff is duly noted....'" as though they were merely inconvenient, irrelevant details.
So much hand waving. Both literal and figurative.
The United Nations.
Aw, man. Finally a Friday night special I can relate to & I'm forced to miss it!
I'll text you some choice snarky comments as well as Gilmore's fashion review.
Ha. That's what you get for being gainfully employed.
Uggh. I'm done with nerds as the anti-hero already. I was way cool in high school and am pretty sure I either vomited in your locker or stole your underwear. Or both.
They all act like they forget about the wedgies administered by the Cool Kids and the Jocks.
But they don't. They remember....
They do.
I was reminded at a high-school reunion by a kid that i'd punched him in the face in 8th grade. I'd completely forgotten about it. When i recalled why i'd punched him in the face, i remembered that he was a fucking dick in 8th grade. So i reminded him of that.
I then said, 'so how much of the past do you want to revisit?'
He dropped it.
*sniff* *sniff* That rationalization smells like pig.
I dont know what you mean by 'rationalization'. My point was that some people remember shit forever. If there was an occasion for me to say sorry to someone who i'd wronged, i'd sure as hell take advantage of it. I have before. In this case, it was a guy asking for some kind of guilt or forgiveness-asking for something that really didnt merit it.
High School reunions, FWIW, are full of odd moments like that.
You punched him in the face. That was wrong even if he was being a dick.
Being a dick can be a form of aggression.
So what's the difference between GILMORE deciding he's authorized to hand out beatings to people whose attitudes he doesn't like and Dunphy doing the same thing?
i'd punched him in the face in 8th grade
6 to 43 years of maturing past puberty?
Uh, Dunphy is getting paid taxpayer money to protect people's rights and keep the peace, not abuse them and cause conflict?
Seems like he should be held to a higher standard than two middle schoolers.
I missed the part where you were there.
"Stormy Dragon|7.11.14 @ 7:10PM|#
You punched him in the face. That was wrong even if he was being a dick.
Just for context = 1) Are you male, and 2) how old are you?
Seriously, it actually matters.
Well, somebody did. Prolly one of your bitch friends.
I like GILMORE's Fashion Review, and request that he take it on the next Reason Cruise? and provide twice-daily updates (with the AM/PM links) about what he sees.
I think it's a WINNER! Also - maroon is the new black for boat cruisers this year - pass it on...
What you're really saying is, you hope I get thrown off a boat in the middle of the night.

Union severs ties with United Negro College Fund over Koch ties
Comments:
I saw that episode of Air Disasters. He was lucky to survive, and the first class exit (front of the aircraft) was damaged and didn't work. Also, it said nothing about other passengers risking their lives to help others.
The person right after him said the same thing. and his retort was like, "Uh, well so what! Hes still an asshole!"
One must wonder: if the Koch Foundation were to cure cancer, how many principles progressives would sooner die than benefit from tainted Koch money?
It's a plot to increase the human carbon footprint by extending lives!
I'm genuinely curious and would have posed that (plausible, given how much cancer research they finance) scenario to them if I wasn't already blocked on my Facebook and Disqus accounts there.
It's pretty easy to bail on underprivileged African-American kids but how many would actually harm themselves to resist the Koch virus?
""if I wasn't already blocked on my Facebook and Disqus accounts there."
You too?!
Ha!
I got banned from all RawStory on the very first comment (well, second) I ever made = which was asking on a Marcotte article (in all seriousness!) =
"Is anyone who disagrees with your blather really a Rape Apologist?? = or is it possible they just disagree with you for legitimate reasons?"
That got me banned. Seriously! And these people pat themselves on the back *nonstop* for their 'independent and open-minded journalism'.
Its a one-note echo chamber.
I even noticed = they KEEP far more stupid/inflammatory and insulting/vulgar 'right wing' comments! they Love that shit. they know it will keep their prog-fish frothing in replies for *years* rebutting the Right-Wingerz.
People actually trying to 'debate' their points/provide counterpoint? no, you'll get locked out instantly.
I lasted a month under the handle Ghost of Batiat. What got me banned was calling someone's blatantly envious attitude toward the rich childish.
The first time I got banned was for asking a self-described dyke (it was in her handle) why she was so obsessed with my penis when she became the 10th person to make a "you must have a tiny penis" joke because I was arguing for gun rights.
They get really agitated when you make obvious points, almost like you can picture them going through a list of talking points in a panic to escape the rush of cognitive dissonance.
Yeah, that was kind of my point. The people they ban are the ones who actually engage them and challenge their rhetoric directly, or actually try and get into a point-by-point factual discussion... they seem to keep people who just write inflammatory partisan poop-throwing, but *screen out* people who actually criticize their own words, and point out inconsistencies in thing they themselves say.
it initially surprised me. I'd actually gotten into far worse comment-bashing in places like The Nation or MoJo or Salon.... but at RawStory, they dropped the Ban-hammer immediately on what was fairly polite (*ok, i did call Marcotte's piece 'hysterical screeching') criticism.
I would suggest that the partisan stuff isn't real. Pure false flag bullshit.
I buy that completely.
Especially given how quickly people like me got booted for even *engaging* people.
The only explanation for the "Vituperative Right Winger" comments is that they're political pinatas for the progs to whack around.
Why all the Bircher stuff?
Patriarch Fred Koch did some work in Stalinist Russia during the 30s and came back very disgusted by the horrors of communism.
That experience prompted him to become a founding member of the John Birch Society.
So his crime was being right about communism at a time when the American Left was slobbering over Stalin and the triumph of socialism in Russia.
Interesting.
It is just odd for me to see it thrown out there as something supposedly significant. Most folks in our generation would have no idea what the JBS was, if they've even heard of it at all.
ANY money from the Kock Bros is tainted.
Party of science!
Starting on the road to the Presidency:
"It was the greatest coffee run in American history. The Ohio boys had been fighting since morning, trapped in the raging battle of Antietam, in September 1862. Suddenly, a 19-year-old William McKinley appeared, under heavy fire, hauling vats of hot coffee. The men held out tin cups, gulped the brew and started firing again. "It was like putting a new regiment in the fight," their officer recalled. Three decades later, McKinley ran for president in part on this singular act of caffeinated heroism."
http://opinionator.blogs.nytim.....civil-war/
The troops were especially impressed by the fact that McKinley had Grand Mocha Lattes, Caff? Misto, iced coffee, and fair-trade Brazilian Roast.

"How Ruth Bader Ginsburg Became the Most Popular Woman on the Internet
"Web culture's revolutionary celebration of powerful female leaders...
"Most of the RBG-philic paraphernalia wasn't new. It first cropped up a year ago, after Ginsburg's ferocious retorts to the Fisher v. University of Texas decision that weakened Affirmative Action laws, and the Shelby County v. Holder decision, which gutted the Voting Rights Act, made her the hero of the internet and at least some portions of the nation.
"That was when the NYU law student Shana Knizhnik created her Notorious R.B.G. Tumblr and when digital strategist Aminatou Sow and designer Frank Chi covered Washington, D.C. with their homemade Can't Spell Truth Without Ruth stickers....
"The ability to present women like Ginsburg, Clinton and Davis as bone-crushingly robust yet simultaneously appealing, revered?practically adorable!?in their rugged severity, is a crucial expansion of the American imagination with regard to powerful women."

You'd think we were living in the Jim Crow South, wouldn't you?
I mean it seems as though the only thing preventing the nation from slipping back into segregated swimming pools is the power of the Supreme Court??
The Supreme Court has gone fascist, so all that remains to save the country from becoming a cross between the Confederacy and The Handmaid's Tale is the Democratic Party.

Except that's not what happened, at all.
The police also made claims about it doing things that this model can't do.

YOU ATE THEM?
I just had the 3 meat combo. Jesse is here, so I obviously didn't eat him. Noticeably absent from this thread is Sudden.
Choosing only 3 meats was the hard part. I went with ribeye, pork, and shrimp. Next time, I'm trying lamb and scallops.
And a nice Chianti?
You could've gained my login powers by consuming my heart.
Never had that.
I like hibachi. And korean bbq. Both are "fun-food". anything involving some involvement/group participation makes food more fun.

Prediction: Okay, let's get these Buffy and Trek references out of the way early so I don't have to watch the whole show.
Wait, then what are geeks?
Don't geeks bite the heads off of chickens at the fairgrounds?
This show is crap if they don't let one of them (not necessarily Kmele) reenact the javelin throw scene from 'Revenge of the Nerds'.
"On assignment." My ass.
How can you have a show about nerds without Welch?
I believe he's a "dork" no?

Time. Time happened.
Call it a push.
Neeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeerd.
Okay, Suderman is a dork.
Wait, nerds have supplanted the Jews?
Is Suderman consciously giving off that Aspie vibe during that energetic description of nerds?
Ask me about systematization.
Spoiler alert.
Do you know who was was into the Triumph of stuff?
Fans of this guy?
The guy who invented the word "was"?
I think nerd culture went mainstream when bashing the prequel Star Wars films became fashionable and an online pastime.
Oh, of course "Crewmember" is going to defend Star Trek.

SPOILER ALERT. I didn't see The Search for Spock yet.
You're thinking of his nephew. Seriously!
Kirk is the ultimate specimen of manliness.
He is. Does that make me gay for agreeing with that? I don't care! If it's wrong for me to admire the ultimate galactic, alpha male, I don't want to be right! Kirk is the man that we should all aspire to emulate. Nice observation, Francisco!

See what i mean about people not shaving? This kid looks 12, but he's still rocking fuzz on his grill.
Is that argument Pro or Con?
Con, as in bad, as in 'Con-Air' bad.
I bumped into Cage at Atlantis during the height of his bankruptcy issues. He took his yacht there.
I will agree that it is one of the worst movies ever. Plane crash, and then a fire engine chase in a "tunnel" in Las Vegas. Made no sense.

George Carlin: overrated comedian or the most overrated comedian?
To be fair, this is the only monologue of his I really enjoy.
Concur
I saw him live. Enjoyed myself.
I agree with about 75% of his stuff.
Yeah, I agree. But the 25% is really bad.
I think my dislike of him stems from how some pretty vapid bullshit in his standup routines have been appropriated by liberals and turned into endless memes.
Particularly attacks on conservatives and Christians that make zero sense in the 21st century where the left has embraced the worst tendencies of both.
Nope. I love Carlin, and don't care that he's lionized by the Left. Truth has no political bias...
I'm told this guy today stepped down to work at grantland.com. We would know that here if this show hadn't been pretaped five weeks ago.
Jezuss, are we sure that Gavin McInnes is on our side? I want to support the guy, but Christ Almighty (no, I'm not religious) the guy says some pretty fucked-up shit! I suspect he's a stealth, left-wing Moby who wants to make Conservatives and Libertarians look bad. Please, just go away!
Plus he's all tramp stamped up.
There better be a Suderman segment at the end of the show. He's all coked up and champing at the bit.
His smile wavered a little when Kennedy did the "Superman" joke. Bad memories?
Why do you say that like it's a bad thing?
We can call it "Does Whatever a Suder Can".
This guy wishes he was Edward Snowden.
That dude was l0pht? Really?
His Twitter handle is @weldpond if that means anything to you, Playa.

kibby says that if anyone thinks they can out-nerd her, they must contend with the fact that she owns an actual robot Dalek.
Really.
What? That doesn't look like a cat to me!
You really hit the jackpot, didn't you?
He absolutely did.
Please. My Roomba can do that while almost vacuuming the floors.
It works if you keep the brush clean. (read: clean it everyday).
I'll have to get a second Roomba to do that.
Makes sense to me. I have guns to protect my other guns.
Does your Roomba approach people and demand identification? Does it freak out and scream "EXTERMINATE! EXTERMINAAATTTTEEEE!" if you tell it you're the Doctor?
I'm not even a Who fan and I think it is the most awesome toy ever.
I found a snake under it once. True story.

G'day.
Sup? I thank thee, but, forsooth, I already ate.

P.S. I bought gold last night. I don't feel any more libertarian. Maybe it hasn't hit me yet.
It's the hording it next to your bullets and beans that makes you feel more libertarian.
I did the Spider Gold Trust. I might have to buy a kilo bar of bullion, though. Sucks, because you have to get it re-assayed if you don't carefully follow the chain of custody, which is expensive...
I've looked at bullion before, but I always have the fear in the back of my mind that if and when shit gets real, the government will target me first for "confiscation".
I have places to hide it. I think that it would be easier for the gov to confiscate an online account than find out where I have physically stored it. They'll never find it. Ever.
Pretty stuff, innit?
You hold a $20 gold piece, well you knew you were holding money!
My dad has double eagles, but I never really got into coin collecting.
I'm just trying to get out of my position in the stock market for a few months. I have a bad feeling....
Damn, Buffalo Trace whiskey is pretty damn good! I'm sure this is one issue on which we Libertarians can find consensus. Please don't prove me wrong...
I can't get it anymore. And, yes, good shit. Weller is the same distillery and is equally good.
My sympathies. There are a few, choice craft beers that are not available in my home state of California, but liquor seems to be readily available. We pay a load of taxes, but we still have access to them. Gonna pour myself another glass in your honor...ahhhh!
The bourbon shortage is hitting hard here. Our best liquor store has been out of their best bourbon for months.
Fuck. I forgot about that. Motherfucking hipsters, hoovering up the good stuff.
Seriously? Again, my sympathies. If not for unnecessary government regulations and taxation, good bourbon would be available to all who crave it. I'll think of you and your predicament as I gulp the last of my excellent (if overpriced) Bourbon. Best wishes, Francisco...
Not so much regulation as a sudden spike of interest recently. Making an aged whiskey has enough lag time between production and consumption that even with producers ramping up production there'll be a shortage in products that became very popular in a short period of time.
I've read there's a shortage of the oak popularly used for aging casks, but I don't know what the issue behind that is.
Have not heard of this. But I also enjoy un-aged whiskey (we drunks can't be too particular). If all else fails, I can always make my own--Moonshiners has shown me how...
It was the go to whiskey in our house, but I haven't reupped in several months because I was gifted a bunch of other (inferior) whiskey that I'm getting close to finishing up.
Just like pizza, is any whiskey really bad? Perhaps I have an unrefined pallet, but I enjoy almost every whiskey (and whisky). But I understand it sucks when we consumers are not allowed to get what we want because of some idiotic, arbitrary legislation.
..."is any whiskey really bad?"...
Southern Comfort.
Really? I know it's technically a liqueur, but I recall fond times with Southern Comfort (especially the 100 proof version). Again, is any liquor bad? Ultimately, they all accomplish the same thing...
Yes, its good. It tends to be overpriced at bars, but is fair to buy @ the sto'.
Damn. The sunglasses line propels him to the top.
The Independents Attire Review, 11 July 2014
The Living is Easy-Edition
- Kenn?dy: Someone call Tom Ridge: Orange Alert!-High Risk of Sexy. We've previously rated the "Cabela's Hunting Orange" #2 to the 'Miami-Vice' Izods in the "Kennedy-Awesome"-scale. But every time I see it, its my favorite. All I can think is = Human Creamsicle.
- S?dermann: In his first appearance in Matt's chair, Peter instantly outdoes his boss by demonstrating "what looks good with a pink shirt". Well, its not pink really (*we've previously noted that Peter has the ability to transmute colors), but the point stands - the purple tie is the *ideal* choice with anything in the pink-to-lilac spectrum. And its pairing with the windowpane/patterned jacket is similarly on-the-money. We've previously bashed Peter on color, cut, and posture - but tonight he comes Ready to Rumble. Conclusion? = He Wants Matt's Job. WIN
- K'm?le: Foster seems to have gradually built up his palette of plaid/patterned shirts to the point where this combo with the knit tie has become his 'signature' getup. My consistent comment has been that it works best when there's some resonance between either shirt/tie or jacket/tie. In this case, the blue in the Red/Blue checked shirt works with the blue-knit tie, and unifies the whole. God Bless America.
??????
Progressive isn't going to like that Geico plug.
Kennedy is on *fiyyyyya*
Korea also has a penis festival, which I failed to go to 🙁
Korea, Denmark and Florida, am I right?
I thought the purpose was to encourage conception due to the faltering birth rate.
They might consider your presence counterproductive to that end.
Apparently it's to appease a virgin's ghost
Andong, a traditional village had a whole forest of penis carvings
I've posted a pic from there previously with me cupping one's balls.
There should be an episode exploring the difference between a schemdrick, schlemiel (it rhymes with Kmele!), and schlimazel.
Heroic Mulatto,
I am moving to Manchester, NH next week any inside tips about places to eat, things to do, events that a new resident might overlook.
Hmm...depends exactly part of town you're moving to, but I'd recommend El Rincon for good cheap Mexican food. You're coming just in time for Mahrajan, which is a Lebanese food and culture festival. Glendi (http://saintgeorgeglendi.com/) is in Sept. and is the Greek version. A stop at Chez Vachon on the west side is a must to get a taste of ManchVegas's Franco-Canadian culture. I know MP and BakedPenguin are also in Manchester, and I think Zeb is too.
It's been a while since I've been to Glendi, but last I was there, there was good food there.
Have you been to Ali Baba? Their gyros and shawarma are really, really good. It's also the only place I've found Chang Beer, which is so much better as an import than as a domestic. The version for the Thai market is way, way too hop-y for my tastes.
No, but it sounds like a place I need to go to.
Oh, and it's not in Manchester, but an Anheuser-Bush Brewey tour is always fun. On Elm Street, I personally know the owners of Hooked and Ignite restaurants, so I can recommend those. The only park that I can think of that's not a wasteland of homeless drunks is Stark Park.
Thanks I appreciate the info. I didn't know that there were other posters in the area.
Again, not in Manchester but near it is Bear Brook State Park, which is worth a visit. The only Asian market worthy of the name is Fang's in nearby Hooksett, but it's teeny-tiny.
You did miss the July 4th fireworks where directly after the show, some enterprising young men (I'm pretty sure they were all men) used lasers to display text across the bridge reading "Liberty? NDAA? NSA? 2nd Amendment? Independence? FBI? 4th Amendment? WAKE UP!" over and over again. Just so you know the kinda place you're moving to.
Sounds like I'll fit in.
Bear Brook sounds good my wife and I enjoy hiking and camping.
We hope to make it over to Acadia NP for a few days at some point before my classes start.
Where are you taking classes, if I may ask?
MCPHS
I'll be completing their nursing program
Oh, cool. We've had some of your international students in our academic English program over at SNHU. I have one dude from Saudi Arabia who wants to be a pharmacist in one of my classes right now, but I don't know if he intends to go to MCPHS or somewhere else.
So, it looks like you'll be spending a lot of time on Elm Street...so I will expand recommendations to The Gyro Spot and USA Chicken and Biscuit which is like a Crown Fried Chicken, but owned by Afghanis.
Wow thanks these are great suggestions
No problem. My wife and I like going out to restaurants and in her previous life she was a trained Thai chef. Good luck with your studies.
Thanks.
We all met Trials and Trippelations at Korean BBQ night. We'll all vouch for him. He's not Mary.
Cool. I know I owe BakedPenguin a meetup, unfortunately between work and my daughter's illness, this is as much recreation as I get nowadays.
Sorry to hear that your daughter is sick.
If you ever want another person in your meet ups I'd be down.
Thanks. And if things ever change (and I hope they do), I'm definitely down.
Sorry to hear that.
Thank you. I've mentioned it before, but my daughter has a serious form of thalassemia. It could be worse, there are people with it who need weekly blood transfusions; my daughter isn't that bad, but we do spend too much of our time in the hospital.
I hope things work out for your daughter.
Ditto. Best wishes.
Pl?ya Manhattan. speaks truly. You should welcome Trials, with open arms, into ReasonLA (east).
""He's not Mary.""
And nicer things could not have been said.
I told him as much. Jesse and I do pretty extensive research before meeting up with people. We pretty much know who everybody is. Trials gave us the slip, though. We were expecting a 60 year old, and in walks a young dude.
I blame you for trusting that I knew what I was doing.
Any chance I am just as elusive to the NSA?
They have your social security number.
The Strange Brew is a nice place, but keep in mind that on some nights off-duty Manchester police hang out there and act as unofficial security for the place.
Still with the purple.
I'm not sure that's the stuff you just 'rinse out'
Then her roots are showing.
I like KMW.
Justin Amash looks like a guy that's just asking to be bullied.
Everyone but Bill Maher.
Suderman should have his own show. It would be fascinating.
I'll give this to Suderman: he brings more energy to Matt's chair than Matt himself.
HE YELLS MORE TOO
My volume control doesn't work as well as it should. Needs a firmware update.
Pocket Hose Ultra: It's a grower, not a shower!
Hipsters are douchebags! Met lots of them when I attempted to relocate to Maine last year. I knew right away I'd never fit in with them, and they'd never accept me. So, I returned to the state of my birth and now accept my destiny. Sigh...
Uhhh...Spock during pon farr would be the ultimate wingman.
He has been and always shall be Foster's friend.
And...he's logical.
Gavin.
I'm impressed.
Yes, his condemnation of Che lifted my perception of him. But I'm still not convinced he's not a Moby...
Norman Borlag is a big fucking deal. I'm glad he was mentioned.
Yes. I'm gonna get his picture and put it on my car (something I've never done before). Che was a sadistic murderer, but I appreciate when kids reveal their true nature when they wear a shirt with his likeness.
She's a witch-whore, not a nerd.
Did you bring enough cyanide for everyone?
Chugging four more ounces of Buffalo Trace... It was nice knowing you guys...
Dude....
That's precious...
...sip.
It's actually plentiful in California. $22 per 750ml bottle. Not bad... If you want me to mail you some, just say the word. Seriously.
Welcome to another exciting game of Spot the Not!
First up: Jesse "the Commie" Myerson!
1. If I have to answer for Soviet gulags, these market/capital twits have to answer for climate collapse, the greatest genocide in history.
2. True communism was never really tried. Stalin, Mao, & Pol Pot were not real communists and Cuba shows that communism can work.
3. For me, communism is an aspiration, not an immediately achievable state.
Place your bets, ladies & gents! Can you spot the Not?
2
yeah, 2
2
2
Definitely two.
Damn! A complete shut-out!
It was indeed #2.
Socrates was not a nerd.
He went to war and kicked some ass but was cool enough to admit that running away was sometimes a good idea
and he was smooth enough a talker to get people to pay just to hang out with him.
combat bravery, modesty, and smooth-hustling are not 'nerd' traits.
He also wasn't even that much of a philosopher. He made his students do all the hard work writing shit down while he chased boy-ass around town.
"to get people to pay"
I thought he gave it away for free.
well the claim is that he was never "paid to teach".. and that was his big criticism of the sophists
much is made of this point in the dialogues; and it seems belabored in order to provide a way to talk about "what is the value of knowledge"? and position himself relative to the Rhetorical experts at the time.
I.F. Stone wrote a book called 'the trial of socrates' where he does a bunch of literary/historical detective work to provide some realistic background to the actual texts (particularly The Apology); my rough memory of it was that it was clear Socrates - while not a fulltime teacher-for-hire, was the recipient of some patronage from at least a few of the leading lights of athens, some of which were political allies. It is obvious at least from dialogues that he ran with the most powerful people in town... and apparently "Entourage" could be a full-time job back in the day.
Oh, Socrates charged for his lessons. He just charged "between oiled-up-thighs time" as opposed to drachmas.
And this is why I'll always regret not being the father of western philosophy.
Wrong age range.
Well yeah, I wouldn't be scoring -3/+10 action, but ancient philosopher jesse would probably find that preference range extremely anti-social.
Good point. Crashing at the houses of the local aristocracy could make up some for the lack of charging fees.
BTW, if you havent, get that IF Stone book. It was *the bomb*. i cant remember how long ago i read it, but at the time i was gobsmacked how good it was and ran around telling everyone about it like i'd had my third 3-way
I read it, I don't know where I put it after I finished.
Yeah, he did emphasize Socrates' connection to the subversive antidemocratic elements in Athens.
Might be worth looking at again.
my third 3-way
I suppose my first two weren't any good either, but that's an odd turn of phrase.
Am I a bad person because I said "shut the fuck up" to the TV when the crying, starving kid came on the commercial?
I salute you.
Nope. That's a human reaction. We live in a global world. If you can't make a living practicing your craft, move somewhere else. Simple as that, but Progressives don't see it that way...and they call me an evil person for believing different from them...Lol.
Damn, he does get a segment.
LOUDER PETER
BUT BREATHE
JESUS HE'S GOING TO HYPERVENTILATE
He knows what he's doing.
AH! Lou Dobbs.
Next up: Valerie Jarret!
1. Hope and change isn't just a campaign slogan- we mean it.
2. Our whole philosophy is one of transparency.
3. A new era of responsibility is here.
3
2
Uno.
Jesus, that's impossible.
3. I'm just guessing. There's not enough there to identify your hand at work
1
Well, well, well. Not so easy this time, was it?
I fooled GILMORE and FdA in one fell swoop. Ha! How the mighty have fallen!
It was #1.
Holy shit I was right for once
Very good, sir. Which stuffed plush toy do you want? I have Lena Dunhams, Rachel Maddows, and teddy bears filled with cyanide-coated thumbtacks.
cyanide please
6/7
I suck.
I posted this before, but I should have saved it for tonight:

(since nobody on the show thought to make a joke on this topic)
I think it's safe to assume that a lot of people are going to go to jail for this:

pump and dump.
*giggle*
That's been getting ink, and no one seems to know who is buying, so I'm not sure who can show damage if and when it crashes.
Is Soros using it to short some sad-sack currency?
Spot the Not!
100% Debbie Wasserman-Schulz!
1. At a time when our moral standing in the world has been weakened by a rubber stamp Justice Department that placed the Bush Administration above the law, we now need someone who is objective and independent. And, make no mistake, Eric Holder is independent.
2. This past election was tough. We must do a better job of clearly articulating our accomplishments to the American people.
3. Obama has worked night and day to turn this country around, and the Republicans have done nothing but obstruct, obstruct, obstruct. Mr. Speaker, "no" is not a plan for moving this country forward.
1
2 is you
They never ever even suggest that they're imperfect.
2

Oh snap! I fooled all of you- including both GILMORE and FdA AGAIN!
I'm on fire tonight!
It was #3.
I'm enjoying some Young's Double Chocolate Stout. Its motto? Pure Luxury.
Perhaps this fine booze is lubricating the satire sections of my brain!
You have looked into the abyss, and it's looked into you. And it wonders why you're laughing at it.
Now it's saying, "OK, I give up. You can be the abyss now. You've earned it. Same rules as the Dread Pirate Roberts."
Next up- Ruth Bader Ginsburg
1. A clear reading of the 2nd amendment in context clearly shows no unrestricted right of citizens to keep and bear arms.
2. I would not look to the U.S. Constitution if I were drafting a constitution in 2012.
3. Frankly, I had thought that at the time Roe was decided, there was concern about population growth and particularly growth in populations that we don't want to have too many of.
3
see below - 1
You are probably right. My track record is quite poor.
1. I think it was Breyer who wrote that one or articulated it in his Heller dissent.
It was #1. I made it up on the fly, I swear.
I know that each quote give the *substance* of one of her positions.
Which one is your phrasing instead of hers?

Kids React to Gay Marriage
Lucas, age 5, seemed to be the most cool with the whole thing.
But do kids pick up on this when they watch Return of the Jedi?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ehEkCYjnLJ8
Only if they're read this book. (I think that's the one which depicts Luke fantasizing about Leia as he roams the jungle.)
That was the only SWs book I read.
Don't remember any of it.
There were people who needed a YouTube video to point that out to them?
Though I can hardly talk; I just recently realized via TV Tropes that on House, M.D., House == Holmes and Wilson == Watson.
What? I thought that was pretty obvious.
Not a big fan of Kids React. They're mostly too young and stupid to say anything interesting. (Does feeling that way indicate that I'm dead inside?)
Teens React is also kinda meh, IMHO. That said, I like Elders React and YouTubers React a decent bit. Although Smosh is annoying and that gay dude plays it up way too much.
It was better when they were mostly reacting to internet memes.
Speaking of YouTubers React, this is very NSFW but hilarious.
The sad part is that I could tell immediately by the narrative style that it was a greentext story.
Kids need to react to that. I mean, as we know, they've already grasped the concept.
And I thought I was dead inside.
Oops. I meant Shane Dawson, not Smosh.
Matrix posted this in the PM links.
Holy FSM, those teeth.
Yes it is, *
You can never reach Peak Derp. And I'm sure in various corners of the intarwebz she's being celebrated as a hero.
* can we make a rule that if you end a sentence in a comma, there is an "invisible 'sweetheart'" as in the comic book kerfuffle last night?
I'm guessing she (or someone close to her) probably had an abortion. And she doesn't feel 100% comfortable with it.
The kids had the right idea. Don't argue back, let her vent, until she edges over into violence - then they probably need to get the cops.
Just to be clear, this demonstration was near the state legislature, they weren't outside an abortion clinic.
But I *love* the way this news story spun it -
"A pro-life protest gets out of hand, and now a woman is charged with a crime."
Because the protesters *must* have been out of hand, to provoke that poor woman!
http://www.abc6onyourside.com/.....8Cnw_ldVW8
It seems the woman's mother is reaching out to the prolifers to work something out and get the charges dropped. Says the daughter is autistic.
http://www.myfox28columbus.com.....8CrEvldVW8
I should know better than to get you this excited late at night.
But I don't *wanna* go to bed!
I've kind of been in that situation...it's an occupational hazard, and you have to stay calm, because it's like Israel, everyone is chomping at the bit to call you the aggressor. You gotta be on your absolutely best behavior.
I'll do an encore of Thomas Friedman. It's quite a challenge to spoof someone that incoherent.
1. We just adopted a baby called Baghdad, and this is no time for the parents to get a divorce. Because raising that baby, in the neighborhood it lives in, is going to be a mammoth task.
2. I've learned three things visiting New Zealand and Australia: There is a place in the world where rugby is front-page news.
3. What's important to understand is that India and Pakistan are like divorced couple bickering about who gets custody of their child named Kashmir who is not the sharpest knife in the drawer.
3 is you
One of the divorce metaphors must be yours.
3
Oh, are you sure of that?
Too late, I already nailed my colors to the mast.
3
OK, you got me. It appears I need more practice before I can spoof Friedman.
A Few of My Favorite Things
#1 - The Di Tomaso Pantera
Easier to drive than this, but:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m5s0nBCjSFM
Much as Yank Tank torque is fun, the sounds of the twelve are, well...
Ive been told by collectors who can afford one, and a writer who reviews cars for a living that Miuras cant be driven anywhere near quickly without the steering going completely to shit. The nose would take pressure off the tires and it would 'float'. Fun! in a million dollar accident-waiting-to-happen.
I do have experience; did not buy it, 10-12% offer-ask difference.
Never got above 85 so I missed the front end lift.
Like all Italian 12s, you need the arms and legs of an ape. The throttle felt like the clutch on a 250 Ferrari, the clutch felt like the brake (ditto) and the brakes seemed like just stepping on the floor; WHOA there, big fella!
There was bad design/engineering in the Miura in bushels, but whoa, nelly! That 12 right behind your ear!
I agree though, 12 cylinder sound is the greatest thing in the world.
I got to poodle around in an early 90s ferrari v12, and it was more fun just tickling the throttle than actually *driving* anywhere.
This was partly because going from 1st to second gear was *scary*
Any of the transaxle Ferraris (275s, 330s) would not go into 2nd until the trans was warm, but I've never driven any 12 later than that, so I dunno whether that got fixed.

#2 - the mid-late '70s Tele Customs
Notable for the very-unique sounding neck-position 'Midrange' humbucker, something no one has ever been able to reproduce particularly well since the specific magnet poles stopped being made. They have (IMO) the best of both worlds of Fenders, providing ample 'twang' and bite, yet much more bass and tone than any other bolt-on guitar ever made.
mine is in black.

#3 Charles Tyrwhitt
Basically, men's clothing needed something between Brooks Brothers and Men's Warehouse, and in the early 2000s, this british shirtmaker arrived in NYC and provided great bang per buck, especially with their shirt quality and diversity.
Paul Krugman time!
1. But Wall Street people are in fact very smart; they're funny, they're not company men who work their way up the chain.
2. The Austrians are the Flat Earth Society of economics. No qualified economist takes them seriously and no one else should either.
3. On the other side, however, open immigration can't coexist with a strong social safety net; if you're going to assure health care and a decent income to everyone, you can't make that offer global.
3 is you.
i think.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vWuQVpBeqLs
Well, i'm pretty sure i remember #2 being him - #1 *sounds like* the kind of left-handed compliment he'd make in order to keep his cocktail party friends.... so process of elimination.... 3.
I literally rolled a d6, and I'll say
3
I'm going with 2. Krugman would never deign himself to even mention the Austrians in one his columns.
And the answer is.....
#2!
And yes, Krugman has mentioned Austrians:
"The appeal to the intellectually insecure is also more important than it might seem. Because economics touches so much of life, everyone wants to have an opinion. Yet the kind of economics covered in the textbooks is a technical subject that many people find hard to follow. How reassuring, then, to be told that it is all irrelevant -- that all you really need to know are a few simple ideas! Quite a few supply-siders have created for themselves a wonderful alternative intellectual history in which John Maynard Keynes was a fraud, Paul Samuelson and even Milton Friedman are fools, and the true line of deep economic thought runs from Adam Smith through obscure turn-of-the-century Austrians straight to them."
Yep, that's some nice projection.
Well, my method was as good as the other methods I used tonight.

#4 Toshiro Mifune
AND
#5 British Funk Revival Bands
Akira Kurosawa without Toshiro Mifune would be like Scorsese without De Niro = NOTHING.
Kurosawa once said, "He does in 1 move what takes other actors 3". He could eat a tuna fish sandwich and made it *interesting*.
re: Funk bands - we talked about Desco/Daptone before... the british have their own versions like the guys linked here, and The New Mastersounds, who are all fantastic.
A Few of My Favorite Things
actually i like his 'ballads' album the best by a LONG shot, and if you havent ever listed to that record front to back, you should.

#6 - Joe's Shanghai Soup Dumplings
Words do not do them justice.
Also, they really do point and laugh at people who burn themselves.
I think I have enough energy for one more. Shall I make another attempt on Ms. Marcotte?
That's a *wonderful* mental picture...I think I'll just say good night now...
I'll play, but I don't know about anyone else.
No more, thank you.
You are actually quite good at it.
btw, you should totally do one of our trolls sometime.
Tony- yes. Shriek is too easy to spoof.
I'll go for it.
Marcotte- Part Deux
1. Part of me wishes that fundie home schoolers found that raising children to deny basic reality will have a long-term detriment to those kids' futures, but unfortunately, going to public school is no guard against believing that everything out of your limited understanding must be magic.
2. What really irritates me about the Tea Baggers is not just the mind-bendingly stupid shit they believe, but the flimsy fig leaf of "small government" they paste over their racism against the first black president.
3. Banning abortion should have the same social esteem as forcing women to wear the hijab, forcing kids to say the rosary in school, or banning non-kosher food from restaurants -- and outrageous violation of the right to choose your own religious beliefs.
I'm gonna go with 2.
I'm going to do #3
cant help myself
Dos. I don't think she really goes in on the racist angle. She prefers her strawmen to be about sexism and theocracy.
I choose 2
Yep- #2 is it.
GMSM's critique is spot on. I took the wrong approach. My general liberal spoof formula is to mix in profanity and an accusation of racism in a run-on sentence.
Oddly it was the "small government" in quotes that made me choose it.
Well, thanks for playing. Be sure not to miss Monday's Spot the Not!: Hit & Run troll edition.
The line-up will include: Tony, Buttplug, Tulpa, and of course, Mary.
Later, I plan I doing an episode featuring Shikha Dalmia, Sheldon Richman, and Steve Chapman.
See you then!
And just because everyone needs a dose of the Kardashians, one of them claims to have married an asshole and therefore want sympathy!
"Khloe Kardashian blasts Lamar Odom for spending her last birthday with another woman"

Well, bitch, maybe you gotta suck better cock! Or maybe you could marry someone who isn't an asshole like you!
Peter, your favorite Nerd doesn't manifest the traits you enumerated as definitive of what it means to be a Nerd.
When will the independents learn that when everyone talks at once nobody can hear anyone?
Peter, maybe back off the coffee before the show next time.
