LeBron James is returning to the Cleveland Cavaliers. This really is the top news story of the afternoon.

  • The White House is asking the House for urgency in considering $3.7 billion to help deal with the border crisis. President Barack Obama is apparently willing to negotiate, which is probably good, as the House's appropriations chair says the number is too high.
  • The Obama administration knew in advance that the British government would force The Guardian to destroy hard drives containing information leaked by Edward Snowden.
  • Ukraine's president vowed to hunt down a rebel group that used rockets to attack an armored convoy, killing between 19 and 30 troops (different numbers from different reports).
  • Strikes continue in Gaza, where the death toll has passed 100.
  • The Federal Communications Commission has approved spending $1 billion per year to provide Wi-Fi service in schools and libraries.

LeBron James is returning to the Cleveland Cavaliers.

    Heat letdown?

    1. Bobarian   11 years ago

Well, you know Cleveland is due another let down, just because.

      1. Certified Public Asskicker   11 years ago

I mean, best player in league plus 5 top 4 picks in the last years.

        Let the let down begin!

        1. Certified Public Asskicker   11 years ago

          in the last 4 years*

    2. Rufus J. Firefly   11 years ago

      Hello.

Wow. Lebron. I wonder how much of it was guilt for the last time he let them down?

      1. Raven Nation   11 years ago

Probably some. But there has been some info over the last week that he has maintained a lot of personal & business ties to the Cleveland area.

        1. Rufus J. Firefly   11 years ago

I've also heard he genuinely feels Ohio is his home.

          1. Root Boy   11 years ago

Has a house there and now he can hang out with Johnny Football and play Madden together.

            1. Raven Nation   11 years ago

LeBron's sports' agency recently signed on to represent Manziel.

              1. Root Boy   11 years ago

I am prescient -- and I know crap about sports

        2. Mickey Rat   11 years ago

His wife also wanted to go back. Also, the Cavs have cap space to build a younger team around him that the Heat don't necessarily the flexibility to.

    3. Rhywun   11 years ago

      What is that, basketball?

      1. Scarecrow Repair   11 years ago

Pronoun, I think. But I am no grammarianist.

    4. Mike M.   11 years ago

Good old LeBron, the biggest front-running bitch boy in sports history.

      1. BakedPenguin   11 years ago

Mike, he's going to Cleveland. Cleveland. That may have been true, but you can't claim that now.

        1. Mike M.   11 years ago

He bailed out on the Heat because he realized during the finals that Dwyane Wade is toast, the same exact way he bailed out on Cleveland. And mark my words, if he comes to feel that the situation with the Cavaliers is hopeless, he's going to bail out on them again a second time.

That's what he does. He's the first guy out of the foxhole running away from the gunfire as soon as the bullets start flying.

          1. Red Rocks Rockin   11 years ago

And mark my words, if he comes to feel that the situation with the Cavaliers is hopeless, he's going to bail out on them again a second time.

Yeah, he's a front-running bitch, but you know what? Good for him for realistically assessing his market value and trying to put himself in a situation where he can be successful and make a lot of money.

Employees who see their employer falling to pieces and try to get in a better situation for themselves and their families are smart and should be lauded for thinking ahead. Fans who whine that these athletes should kiss the ground the fans walk on "because we pay your salary" and should remain on a shitty team even when the team's management is shit (for instance, Tood Helton's career with the Rockies) end up sounding like a bunch of butt-hurt socialists.

      1. MegaloMonocle   11 years ago

The new LaFerrari does not have Pininfarina coachwork. Apparently, by the time they got done engineering the airflow, there wasn't anything left to do.

Subaru use to use a Porsche designed engine...

It had basically the same dimensions as a suped 911 Porsche engine so hypothetically you could fit in a 911 Porsche engine into a Subaru...and have 4 wheel drive.

      Always wanted to do that.

Sadly finding an old subaru from like 1980 that is not a pile of rust is not in the cards.

      1. Rufus J. Firefly   11 years ago

Why do you think they're hard to find?

        1. Almanian!   11 years ago

          Rust never sleeps

          1. Bobarian   11 years ago

And early Subies were made from cheap steel.

            1. Bobarian   11 years ago

aLso, Subies have never used Porsche designed motors, just motors with the same basic layout (so did old VWs). The horizontally opposed "boxer" design.

Subarus have always been water cooled, while older Porsche and VWs were air cooled. Currently some people are putting Subie WRX motors in Porsche Boxsters because they are bigger and more powerful.

              1. Almanian!   11 years ago

BMW motorcycles also - of course - used a flat twin for years. Still do. Now with water cooling of the head. it's a great design.

      2. Overt   11 years ago

I believe this is an urban myth that has circulated for a long time and gone through a lot of retellings. Both Porsche and Subaru have had Boxer engines for a long time. That is just an engine with horizontally opposed cylinders rather than, say inline or in a V shape. There are rumors that Subaru either stole one of the early boxers and re-engineered it, or studied with Porsche or licensed the Boxer name (but not the design) from Porsche.

I think this gets further confused because Porsche has a Boxter model, and it has a 6-cyl boxer engine in it. So some dealers or other people will say something like "It has the same type of engine that a Porsche has". When I had a WRX, valets used to always be like "Did you know this had a Porsche engine in it?" or something like that. After it happened once or twice, I spent a bunch of time in WRX forums trying to undertand what they meant, and this was the conclusion I came to.

        1. Mad Scientist   11 years ago

VW Beetles and busses have boxer engines, as do many BMW motorcycles. It's not like Porsche is the only manufacturer to ever figure out how to make a horizontally opposed engine.

          1. Whahappan?   11 years ago

Indeed. Ferrari used 12 cylinder boxers in several of their cars.

          2. seguin   11 years ago

            And Corvairs.

The White House is asking the House for urgency in considering $3.7 billion to help deal with the border crisis.

With a number that high the crisis is sure to be solved.

    1. Andrew S.   11 years ago

I'm sure the $10,000 that doesn't go to inflated salaries and contracts to connected people in border districts will help a lot.

    3. CE   11 years ago

Couldn't they just hire 2,000 border patrol agents at 100K per year, one for each mile of Southern border, and solve the crisis for something closer to 200 million? (0.2 billion)

Come to think of it, doesn't the FedGov already spend billions to defend the border? They need more?

There's already been speculation that the GOP convention could force some of the home playoff games to Columbus -- assuming LeBron could get the Cavs to the playoffs.

      1. Ted S.   11 years ago

The playoffs end in June, and the convention is going to be in late July at the earliest. Why the hell would they need to move games?

Chinese Shoppers' Penchant for Catching Z's in IKEA

The Chinese fondness for napping in odd places is a well-documented phenomenon, one that's spawned a popular website and even a book.

One Getty photographer recently focused on a subspecies of the Chinese nappers: Those who like to frequent IKEA's beds. As any visitor to a Chinese IKEA can attest, such stores have a particularly convivial feel, with locals flocking to the store to simply hang out, as well as shop?or, as the case may be, catch a few winks.

Asked about the Chinese penchant for napping in its stores, IKEA spokesman Josefin Thorell said the furniture company was fine with it. "This is a spontaneous phenomenon. Some customers who enter the Chinese stores sleep in the bed. IKEA in China does nothing to prevent nor anything to attract sleepers. But we don't see it as a problem, we're happy people feel at home in our stores. Certainly, it entails a little extra work for the staff, purely practically. But on the other hand, if customers try out our furniture and like it, we can sell an extra mattress or two."

Vice: The Del Amo Fashion Center Is America in Mall Form, Which Explains Why It's Falling Apart

It's a Marxist read of the mall by my work. Basically the shiny nice, high-end shops are on the outside and the shitty parts (and a Cinnabon, which she doesn't even mention!) are tucked in a basement. Apparently this is purely because corporations hate poor people.

The lighting becomes dimmer, the shops less well kempt. You notice a trade school. An Armed Services recruitment office. Go down the escalator, below street level, and there they are?the shops for the lower classes. Below them, at sub-sub street level, is the Burlington Coat Factory. You have now reached the bottom of the barrel, the basement below the basement. If you were any further underground, you would literally be in Hell.

Favorite line: "They sold it shortly thereafter, because they are a corporation, and that is what corporations do with their acquisitions. The corporation's motto: Always for Money, Never for Love."

Second fav: "They're clearly planning on letting the underground section of the mall fall further into decay?once the leases expire, they'll demolish the structure, salt the Earth and high-five one another. They will probably celebrate with expensive scotch and "high end" goods."

    1. Carl ?s his privilege   11 years ago

They're clearly planning on letting the underground section of the mall fall further into decay?once the leases expire, they'll demolish the structure, salt the Earth and high-five one another. They will probably celebrate with expensive scotch and "high end" goods.

Well, clearly there is no place closer to hell on earth than a Burlington Coat Factory. I bet the Koch Bros force the most unfortunate and impoverished of society to buy stuff there and then when they can't afford to pay for it, they force them into slavery by making them work there.

The comments are great. Apparently, the author couldn't get even basic facts straight. Then again, what are small-t truths compared to Capital-T Truth?

Also, what does "corporation" mean to such people, other than "whatever I don't like"?

      1. jesse.in.mb   11 years ago

She doesn't really understand the demographics of Torrance at all. Strip malls and fast food joints is a silly thing to say when she points out there's an Exxon refinery and the Toyota corporate HQ (soon to be un-true) a sentence later. She also ignores that the Del Amo mall is huge and profitable, and is smack dab between two sprawling medical centers built around prominent hospitals.

Her grasp of the cities demographics is also very suspect.

She is right that the nicer parts of the mall have been slowly making inroads into the poorer parts of the mall, and that the poorer parts of the mall are fucking depressing.

        1. Pl?ya Manhattan.   11 years ago

There's a thin line in the shitty part of the mall. Lots of out of towners there on Friday nights. I can see why they would want to push the shitty stores out.

Denny's Atari Remix Is The Weirdest Discount Restaurant / Arcade Game Crossover You'll See Today

The three games in question are Hashteroids, Centipup, and Take-Out, and no, you don't get any extra points for figuring out which classic arcade titles those titles are lampooning. In Hashteroids you pilot a ketchup bottle spaceship shooting drops of tomato paste at enormous hashbrowns, in Centipup you use a bottle of syrup to shoot at a living chain of what I'm assuming are hush puppies, and Take-Out has you clearing a wall of destructible Grand Slam breakfast foodstuffs with an egg. There's a link to the Denny's app on the opening screen, and Google Play Games integration for scores and leaderboards.

Strikes continue in Gaza, where the death toll has passed 100.

So I gather the Israelis are off on another one of their 100% unprovoked killing sprees? They used to only do this after they were attacked by the Palis, but I guess times have changed.

    1. Root Boy   11 years ago

      Sarcasm?

Palis did start their rocket launches--after the 3 teens were kidnapped and murdered in the West Bank. One Arab teen was murdered by Isrealis after that, but the Jews actually arrested some people for it.

I actually support Israel's actions for a change. Attacking sites launching rockets at you is a legitimate use of force for self defense. Guess whooooo:

    Who is more pro-motherhood? Pro-choice or anti-choice?

For those who don't know, expecting mothers in Finland can fill out a simple form and the government sends them a really fancy "baby box" full of stuff for the baby (and a little stuff for mom), free of charge...

Finland has universal health care and all forms of contraception are on offer, free of charge. Abortion is easier for Finnish women to get, as well, since it is also available free of charge. There are strong limits on it after the first 12 weeks, but since it's easy to get one in the first 12 weeks, demand for non-health-related abortions after that is really low.

So basically, because Finland, pro-choise is pro-motherhood.

Bloomberg: Colorado Gun Recall Towns So Rural, They Don't Have Roads

In what may come as a surprise to residents of Colorado Springs and Pueblo, former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg doesn't think those cities have roads.

Bloomberg told Rolling Stone that he was "sorry" about the recalls of two state senators last year over the Democratic state legislature's gun-control laws, but added that their districts were so "rural" that, "I don't think there's roads."

"In Colorado, we got a law passed. The NRA went after two or three state senators in a part of Colorado where I don't think there's roads," said Bloomberg in the interview published online Wednesday.

"It's as far rural as you can get," said Bloomberg. "And, yes, they lost recall elections. I'm sorry for that. We tried to help 'em. But the bottom line is, the law is on the books, and being enforced. You can get depressed about the progress, but on the other hand, you're saving a lot of lives."

He sure does help New York's sterling reputation for understanding and kindness.

I don't really know why metropolitan areas seem to concentrate leftists, but I have a feeling it's because people in those areas, who have lived in those areas all of their life, have never had the sense of independence and self reliance that more rural people have. Maybe, I'm still undecided.

All of my life I have moved around. I have lived in the largest cities in the country and in some of the most rural areas. I don't really think either had any role in shaping my political views.

          1. Mad Scientist   11 years ago

People who have issues with self-esteem trend to gravitate to one another like mutual parasites. The more pathetic they are, the more they need an urban area to protect them. They steal self-esteem by pretending they're "part" of whatever happens to be going on around them, and they borrow it from like-minded idiots, who are just as desperate, by "belonging" with people they choose to believe are not as fucked up as they are. Deep in their craven little hearts they know they're worthless, but every day they get up and try to convince themselves otherwise by holding the right political beliefs, attending the right churches, doing what they're told, and despising the hell out of the people they meet who aren't doing the same thing. They call this collectivist condition "civilization."

They're not necessarily leftists, but they're all progressives.

    Ed Vitagliano of the AFA:

Despite the media's refusal to consider the reality of "ex-gay" people, there are clearly many who have left the lifestyle. While temptation remains, they have ? by God's grace ? reoriented their affections to the opposite sex.

That's called being in the closet, Ed. In a few years you'll complain that those people cheated on the wives they should've never had and how destructive the homosexual lifestyle is to good Christian families. Well done.

It doesn't matter what the American Psychiatric Association says. Paul's statement, "Such were some of you," is proof that God does heal penitent sinners of all sorts of sinful "orientations." Homosexuals are not excluded from that hope.

Our definitions of proof may be slightly different, Ed. While I don't trust the APA as far as I can throw it, Paul wouldn't be my go-to on this.

In all fairness I'm paring down a long article that says Christians must reject homosexual identity even if their homosexual impulses remain because "we are called to gain mastery over the impulses that have plagued us, even if the impulses themselves remain. Christ will lead us in victory if we will receive His grace daily and obey Him."

He twists himself in knots to say that it's necessary to not identify as a homo to get salvation, but grace, but not really. He verges on presenting a works-based salvation model, but doesn't want to get in trouble with evangelicals for presenting a works-based salvation model.

The White House is asking the House for urgency in considering $3.7 billion to help deal with the border crisis.

    Ok, let's see:

    1. Create artificial crisis.

    2. Ask for lots of money to solve artificial crisis.

    3. Get money, do nothing, make money mysteriously disappear.

    4. Say money wasn't enough, need more.

    5. Repeat steps 1-4 indefinitely!

    1. GILMORE   11 years ago

The entire thing seems to be a game...

...so that one party can 'blame' the other.

GOP wants to nail Obama for lack of leadership on 'border issue'. Highlights the clusterfuck of the whole DHS/INS mismanagement.

Obama, in *classic* political parry = DEMANDS MORE FUNDS!!

*GOP is utterly neutered! They stammer... but but but but... and all the Dems pile on ""Yeah! WHY NOT MOAR MONEY!? THATS WHY THE PROBLEM IN THE FIRST PLACE!"

And then the debate will be "resolved" with some more money, but *not as much* as they'd wanted. And it will be called 'compromise'.

Meanwhile, the original thing that people called 'the problem'? Oh... THAT. yeah, that will just go on exactly like before.

      Because that's how shit works.

      1. Hyperion   11 years ago

It is all a game. The winners are the political elite class and their cronies. All the rest of us are the losers. The saddest thing about it is that most of the losers think that the winners are their friends, because they're on their 'team'. And that's what allows the winners to keep playing the game and winning.

  25. Coeus   11 years ago

How's about a heap of retarded speculation?

From the reporting of the past few days, the spree appears to have been Haskell's attempt to get revenge on his ex-wife's family. To no one's great surprise, Haskell had been arrested for domestic violence in 2008, and his ex-wife filed a protective order against him in 2013. All of which leads to the question: Considering the laws put in place, both on federal and state levels, to prevent domestic abusers from getting guns, how did Haskell get one?

While we don't know yet if the gun Haskell used was legally obtained, Hannah Levintova and Dana Liebelson put together a chilling report at Mother Jones that shows that, due to multiple loopholes that the NRA fiercely lobbies to protect, "his case appears to be the latest example of how easy it remains for domestic abusers to possess firearms, thanks to weak legislation."

    1. Notorious G.K.C.   11 years ago

I thought it was illegal to have guns if you're under a domestic violence restraining order?

      1. Coeus   11 years ago

And while laws prevent people under protective orders from buying guns legally, Haskell converted the protective order against him into a "mutual restraining order" as part of the terms of he and his wife's divorce decree, which again freed him up to buy a gun.

        1. MegaloMonocle   11 years ago

So his wife agreed to it and a judge signed off on it.

          That's some loophole.

    2. Coeus   11 years ago

Levintova and Liebelson zero in on three major loopholes in federal law that make it all too easy for abusers to get guns: "The current law doesn't apply to misdemeanant stalkers, domestic-violence misdemeanants who are current or former dating partners but who've never cohabitated or had a child together, as well as accused partners subject to a temporary (rather than permanent) restraining order."

      1. Carl ?s his privilege   11 years ago

"Innocent until proven guilty" isn't a "loophole", asshole.

        1. Coeus   11 years ago

Despite having insanely safer lives, this is an area where women are affected more than their normal 85(men) to 15(women) percent ratio of violence. So, obviously, no civil rights are as important as rectifying this injustice.

          1. MegaloMonocle   11 years ago

Actually, spreading guns around is probably a good start on getting that back to an even 50/50 split.

      2. paranoid android   11 years ago

What's the operating definition of a "loophole" here? So far as I can tell, if anybody is actually permitted to own a gun at all, they consider that to be a "loophole" in the law.

      3. Coeus   11 years ago

And the true motivations win out, as they always do with "common sense regulations":

The depressing part is that even closing these loopholes probably wouldn't have stopped Haskell. But if we can't even pass laws barring stalkers and girlfriend-beaters from owning guns, then more serious measures, the kind that may have prevented this Texas tragedy, don't have a chance.

        1. Obama's Buttplug   11 years ago

His ex-wife and her family should have armed themselves. It's really that simple.

        2. MegaloMonocle   11 years ago

The depressing part is that even closing these loopholes probably wouldn't have stopped Haskell.

          So why close them?

      4. Hyperion   11 years ago

This is pure bullshit. Misdemeanors will ban you from getting a gun for life if the crime was related to domestic violence or drugs.

I'm not sure if that is law in certain states, or part of the 1994 Brady Act, 2nd amendment violation act, but I think the latter. I know one guy who has a misdemeanor drug charge and hasn't been able to buy a gun, even though the 'crime' was more than years ago.

All these people want is for no one to be able to own guns, except for the government, that's the end game. Because they're fucking idiots, they want to take away their own rights and give a tyrannical government complete control over every minute detail of their life. Well, they THINK they want that until it happens to them, then they'll be the ones screaming foul the loudest of all.

        1. Coeus   11 years ago

All these people want is for no one to be able to own guns, except for the government, that's the end game.

Yep, look at these two parts of the same article:

Unfortunately, the NRA tends to treat any attempt to strengthen laws keeping domestic abusers from guns as nothing more than a backdoor way to take away everyone's guns.

And in the next fucking paragraph:

The depressing part is that even closing these loopholes probably wouldn't have stopped Haskell. But if we can't even pass laws barring stalkers and girlfriend-beaters from owning guns, then more serious measures, the kind that may have prevented this Texas tragedy, don't have a chance.

          1. Hyperion   11 years ago

Also, did they ever think that when someone commits a crime, that they are maybe supposed to be forgiven after their sentences are completed? I thought these 'liberals' are tolerant, yet they hold on to the premise of marking someone for life, denying jobs, and even basic constitutionally guaranteed rights.

Lifetime sentences, for everything, it's the liberal way.

    3. Mad Scientist   11 years ago

Rant away, but Obama (and repubs) solution to the problem is always money.

Most will go to building HHS snazzy new offices.

    2. GILMORE   11 years ago

The money will "Go to" nothing.

      Because the problem isn't funding

      The problem is policy

if we simply changed our policies, people wouldn't be coming over the border and throwing themselves into the arms of federales. There'd be legal means for them to come here, and/or disincentives to seeking freebees.

Instead, we simply feed the beast that is causing the problems.

      1. Root Boy   11 years ago

        Oh, agree 100%.

I would build a longer fence as it allows you to patrol the border with less people, thereby saving money.

          1. Root Boy   11 years ago

I will do that, but walls can keep people out (see San Diego before and after) and the Wall in Isreal.

I know they can climb over it, but it still channels people into more guardable areas. That is why there were so many migrants going through the desert.

I know most folks here support more open immigration (I do support bigger opportunities for legal immigration), but I think amnesty will just encourage more illegals and so we might as well just open the doors and see what happens if we do an amnesty and don't control the borders.

So apparently the one episode that the cast of Seinfeld refused to do was about Elaine buying a gun (based on a woman writer's decision to buy one). They decided against it because of a joke about suicide/JFK's assassination and because "guns aren't funny."

The comments from the director are quite derpy, and Larry Charles (the best writer behind Larry David) defends the reasonable position.

Right, forgot the best quote from the director (Tom Cherone):

"We are at present two peoples ? two countries, really, living within a common border and sharing mostly a common language, but divided upon the answer to this question: Does the government serve the people or do the people serve the government?" Vanderboegh said.

"We like to think that all our fellow Americans, even those who plainly state that they are committed to stealing our liberty and our property and attempting to control our very lives, are merely suffering from differences of opinion that can be overcome by the right mix of persuasion or electoral politics," Vanderboegh said.

"Yet how many of us have tried such methods with every fiber of our being and fallen short?" he continued. "Not because we were wrong, but because those of the other side were impervious to such arguments, to such tactics, for they believe completely in their right to their appetites for our liberty, our property, and our lives with all the religious fervor of a pagan worship of naked power wrapped in a catechism of lies."

    1. Coeus   11 years ago

"Let us first be honest enough to admit first to ourselves and then to proclaim to those domestic enemies of liberty ? and thence to the world ? that failing all other appeals to peaceful means, that the founders' solution to such tyranny is still available, still potent, and still waiting, for when democracy turns to tyranny, the armed citizenry still gets to vote," Vanderboegh said, as the crowd cheered wildly.

"This is the promise, this is the warning," he continued. "The threat embodied by the Gadsden flag of our founders. Don't tread on me, it says. Don't. Tread. On. Us."

So a bit back, some Tumblrinas decided it would be a good idea to "Declare Independence from 4chan" on July 4th and bombard it with admonishments over its racism, misogyny, etc. (which, mind you, actually are present on /b/ and /pol/, though it is hard to say what percentage is genuine). I'm not sure what they meant to accomplish with that, but many also wanted to get it banned, apparently realizing neither the irony nor the legal infeasibility.

Anyway, it was a disaster. The ones that showed up on 4chan got banned pretty much immediately, and then /b/tards and /pol/iticians turned around and started griefing the heck out of Tumblr, posting gore, pornographic photoshops of Tumblrinas' selfies, simulated rape porn, etc. most prominently in the feminism tag, but also random places like the tags for Doctor Who and other fandoms.

It was all pretty vile and immature, and I think they behaved like assholes. However, it was mildly entertaining to watch from a distance.

Obviously I can't (and don't really want to) post most of it, but here are some SFW highlights from the weekend:

Aww shucks. I've got some glaring blind spots in my knowledge though. I think I admitted a few weeks ago that I'd only recently learned "DTF" meant "down to fuck" when a straight friend joined Tinder.

      Facepalm.

If your objective is to help improve safe chemical testing.... or if your objective is well, fucking anything other than subsidizing idiocy in the form of bureaucrats, donating money to fedgov is the worst way to achieve it.

"The White House is asking the House for urgency in considering $3.7 billion to help deal with the border crisis. President Barack Obama is apparently willing to negotiate"

When Obama says he's going to "deal with the border crisis", what exactly does he mean? Obama's repeatedly demonstrated that he doesn't know the first thing about moral hazard...

And how much of this $3.7 billion will be used to track down the parents of these children, strip them of their parental rights, and prosecute them for child endangerment, neglect, or whatever else is appropriate?

    1. Root Boy   11 years ago

    Social liberalism marches on...

"Judge Garry Neilson, from the district court in the state of New South Wales, likened incest to homosexuality, which was once regarded as criminal and "unnatural" but is now widely accepted.

Judge Neilson made the comments during the trial of a brother charged with raping his younger sister. The man has pleaded guilty to sexually assaulting his sister when she was 10 or 11 years old in 1973 or 1974 but has pleaded not guilty to charges relating to sex they had in 1981, when she was 18 and he was 26.

"The complainant has been sexually awoken, shall we say, by having two relationships with men and she had become 'free' when the second relationship broke down. The only thing that might change that is the fact that they were a brother and sister but we've come a long way from the 1950s ? when the position of the English Common Law was that sex outside marriage was not lawful."

36 So both of Lot's daughters became pregnant by their father. 37 The older daughter had a son, and she named him Moab; he is the father of the Moabites of today. 38 The younger daughter also had a son, and she named him Ben-Ammi; he is the father of the Ammonites of today.

I learned it from reading you, Bible!

      1. Mickey Rat   11 years ago

Do you think that story advocates oks drunken rape as well (Lot's daughters got their father drunk to make him impregnate them)?

        1. Mickey Rat   11 years ago

Also, that seems to be a propaganda story about rival tribes. "Yes, those Moabites and Ammonites are related to us but their origins are kinda gross."

          1. jesse.in.mb   11 years ago

that seems to be a propaganda story about rival tribes

That's basically what it is, although the Israelite origin story of the patriarchs marrying cousins over a few generations skeeves us out, no? We ban cousin marriage in many states, but the Patriarch were all up in Laban's family's business, repeatedly.

The guy should be tossed in jail and the keys should be lost for the stat rape on his sister, once she was an adult they were having sex I find distasteful, but I don't really give a shit if people do things I find distasteful in the bedroom so long as it isn't coercive.

            1. Mickey Rat   11 years ago

Yes cousin marriage does for Western European derived cultures, but it was a prevalent custom in that part of the world and apparently still is.

              1. jesse.in.mb   11 years ago

I'd be curious to know when that happened because the European Royal families did cousin marriage to excess. My memory is fuzzy on non-royal marriages, but I believe it wasn't unusual in the lower classes as well, but not to the point of being standard, up until relatively recently.

I'd imagine some of it is noticing an increased rate of birth defects, but that only becomes pronounced when it happens repeatedly over a few generations.

I don't know any info on one-off incidences of children produced from immediate family incest though. It might be best not to find that out.

                1. Mickey Rat   11 years ago

The history of the Spanish Hapsburgs and Bourbons are probably the most infamous examples of what happens with a history of cousin marriages. There is apparently some problems with this in the present Middle East as multi-generation cousin marriages are made to keep inheritances to close family.

I imagine there is less of a risk if1st cousins are only 1st cousins and not 2nd, 3rd and whatever cousins as well.

                  1. jesse.in.mb   11 years ago

Absolutely. Egyptologists believe that there was a lot of fucked-uppedness in some of the Egyptian dynasties due to multiple generations of sibling marriage to keep the divinity concentrated or some such shit.

One of the Pharaohs (male, possibly Tut...it's been a while) had child-bearing hips, and there were some other serious congenital defects they've seen represented in art, or found in mummies.
