Cincinnati Literally Barricading Roads in Effort to Stop Prostitutes

In covering U.S. sex work issues, I read about a lot of stupid anti-prostitution initiatives. But the latest from Cincinnati, Ohio, may just take the stupid cake. Apparently, cops there don't think the good citizens of Cincy need to actually use certain major thoroughfares—or, if they do, too bad. There is prostitution to deter, and if that means literally barricading off roads, so be it.
The barricades, which police insist will be up for "less than three months," went up this week at three spots on McMicken Avenue, near the University of Cincinnati. Police say previous efforts and "community applied pressure" have not been enough to curb prostitution on the McMicken corridor, and hence desperate measures are warranted.
From The Cincinnati Enquirer:
A Jan. 9 prostitution-related homicide underscored the need for immediate action, said District 1 Capt. Michael John.
… After the homicide, officers began walking the area and interviewed the women, who work the street, John said. He said officers tried to talk to them about getting out of prostitution.
It doesn't sound like they were very successful, which would imply that the estimated 70- to 80-women regularly working the area are actually choosing to do so. Naturally, police efforts to stop them are being referred to as the McMicken PATH—that's "People Against Trafficking Humans" (emphasis mine)—Project.
Cincinnati is also currently considering plans to publish the names of people convicted of prostitution-related offenses (through either press releases sent to media outlets or on the city's government access TV channel), to notify offender's spouses of prostitution-related arrests, to create a court specifically for prostitution offenses, to offer a "john school" as an alternative punishment for those arrested (no word on exactly what that would entail), and to increase fines for prostitution offenses. However, for now, the city is settling for inconveniencing its populace and driving more Johns to the Backpage.com ads.
In a statement, the Cincinnati Police Department (CPD) promised that the anti-prostitution barricades will "interrupt the cruising cycle of those offenders frequenting the area for the purpose of engaging the prostitutes" and "assist stakeholders in taking ownership of the McMicken corridor." While CPD "recognizes this temporary measure may serve as an inconvenience to some," the efforts will ultimately "increase quality of life for all," it says.

oh like you couldn't drive through the sidewalk.
If you needed a private, convenient place to hump, behind the barricades would be a good choice.
And you could sing "Why don't we do it in the road"!
Something similar worked for Les Nessman.
It's a good think McMicken Avenue is the only Avenue in Cincinnati.
"thing", too
Wouldn't they just walk a block over from McMicken Avenue?
The street isn't even all the way blocked off, just blocked off at certain points. People can still drive on the road, they just might have to make a few extra turns if they want to go back the other way on it.
I think in Cincinnati McMicken is the only paved road. Several of the other streets do have straw occasionally placed over the muddier parts, though.
It is just during prostitution season too. I had no idea there was a three month prostitution season there. This is a very educational publication.
Have the cops tried shooting the road yet? Wait, is this the War on Roads? thread?
According to the Ohio Attorney General's office, there are at least 430 unsolved murder cases in Cincinnati.
Oh, yeah, we have one of the highest murder rates.
(#hometownpride!)
Cincinnati is great. Have you been to the fountain in the square? It's my favorite.
But this one involves human trafficking! It's clear that these women are slaves, because they're too afraid to speak to cops about not being a prostitute.
Side note, does this count as a blockade in the war on women?

Imagine YES!
Serious question: are you forced to register as a sex offender if you're arrested on a prostitution-related offense?
Not yet, at least in CA.
asking for a friend?
In some places.
My friend wants to know if there's any appreciable decrease in infectious disease rates in a legalized system? And by friend I mean penis.
Yes, if you go to the Costco Whorehouse. The Dollar Store Whorehouse might be dicier.

He was allegedly pimping teens with drugs and force and is already on the registry for a prior conviction. I was thinking more along the lines of johns and pros.
Ah, I didn't really read the specifics, just saw that link earlier today and recalled it when you asked.
I know for a fact that if you took any vice cop in these United States and transplanted them to Saudi Arabia, they would gleefully assist the mutaween in preventing teenaged girls from escaping a burning building because that would mean they would be in public with their hair uncovered.
Fucking animals.
No doubt. If they'll fill a car full of lead to prevent a teenage girl from drinking alcohol, why wouldn't they?
Tie those fuckers to poles and light them on fire.
We libertarians scoff at your puny roads.
Where we're going, we don't need roads.
Seriously. Would one of you libertarian engineering types invent hover cars already? We could eliminate the Roads and Schools argument with Hovercars and Khan Academy.
The libertarian engineering types tasked with that invent Bitcoin instead...cuz you know libertarians.
Worse then herding cats
The officer running this surname really isn't "John" is it?
As in this sentence?: Officer John, in charge of arresting Johns, is in the John because he got a Dear John letter.
"notify offender's spouses of prostitution-related arrests"
Which would presume guilt in advance of trial?
Well obviously they wouldn't be arrested if they weren't guilty, Eddie.
YEP. Ridiculous, right?
What if my spouse and I want to hire a prostitute together? Do they have to notify us separately or can they save time and talk to us together?
I suppose cop's wives are exempted.
Meanwhile, in Maryland: Police proudly announce that they'll be live-tweeting a prostitution sting. Stay tuned!

Thanks to alliance with most feminists, today there's nothing that's forbidden to be done against Johns.
It's terrible.
One libertarian has an answer: http://www.amazon.com/Paying-I.....1770461191
If they have no spouse do they get off?
I would think that would be the reason for soliciting a prostitute.
That is so stupid.
Anti-prostitution laws are sexist.
Ah, it appears the Gillibrand solution to the military sex assault 'scandal' has gone viral. When in doubt, create a separate legal system to give the appearance of action.
Why does "community applied pressure" make me think they would really like to see people stoning the prostitutes?
In a statement, the Cincinnati Police Department (CPD) promised that the anti-prostitution barricades will ..."assist stakeholders in taking ownership of the McMicken corridor."
Stakeholders = the city and the CPD.
This prostitution thing is a fairly new development in human history, so I can see why they want to nip it in the bud.
Prostitution is more-or-less my favorite thing. (Maybe it will lose some of its allure once I, ahem, engage in a consenting transaction.)
I cannot love the United States until I am free to exchange money for coitus.
A cockroach should eat Cincinnati.
Huh. So they don't have the Internet in Cincinnati? I did not know that.
Well, what the heck.,.according to Google Maps, the north end of McMicken Ave. has been lost entirely, resulting in an incongruity between Street View and overhead. Apparently since the camera car went thru, a purple house on the last corner and a Jiffy Lube on the Central Pkwy. a block W of there were demolished to make way for a Martin Luther King Jr. Dr., using what looks according to Street View to have been part of McMicken Ave. They seem to have taken down links to any Street View photos north of there on the old route, although they do go a couple frames N of the corner.
Just so you get it, it seems temporarily blocking a few points of the same st. is a relatively minor loss, albeit for a stupider reason. Just to keep things in perspective.
But...it does make me wonder if there's something going on here unrelated to prostitution or MLK that leads to the people on this st. being deliberately blockaded.
http://www.dot.state.oh.us/dis.....ril-8.aspx at the bold-faced "Also, a reminder that" purports to explain the closure, which occurred a year ago.
Um, McMicken is not really "near" the university. It's down the hill in a much more dicey neighborhood. McMillan is near the university, though.

Ms. Brown, you focused on the trees & missed the big story in the forest! Must've involved some eminent domain.
45 degree angle view at Google Maps still shows the block of McMicken Ave. N of Hopple St. (Old Hopple St.), but not the purple house at 1103 Hopple St. (1103 Old Hopple St.) or the Jiffy Lube on the Parkway shown by St. View that were obviously demolished to make way for the MLK connector rd. being built out of the remains of that block of McMicken Ave.
Presumably previous takings cut off that block of Hopple St. to make way for the Pkwy., Interst., and Hopple St. Viaduct. Compared to al this, a few Jersey barriers the cops put up for a while ostensibly concerning prostit'n (which story I doubt; probably a cover for something nefarious) is peanuts.
Won't the prostitutes just... you know... walk to a different spot?
