Join Reason and Celebrate 'Video Game Nation' in Los Angeles, May 8

Shall we play a game? That's not just a question, but a famous movie quote that serves as a good early example of how video games have been growing to be part of American culture. June's issue of Reason, appropriately titled "Video Game Nation," explores this now-fully-entrenched culture, examining its intersections with politics, economics, the arts, and even philanthropy.
Video games are now more of a social environment than ever (despite what critics would say about kids glued to monitors), so Reason is opening up its Los Angeles office for a gathering and a panel discussion with a couple of industry insiders about video game innovations, what video games may accomplish, and what the future holds. We'll have food trucks, drinks, video games and free valet parking. Here's the basics:
- When: Thursday, May 8, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.
- Where: Reason's Los Angeles headquarters, 5737 Mesmer Ave., Los Angeles, CA 90230 (Map)
- Who will be there: Besides you lovely people, Reason magazine Editor-in-Chief Matt Welch will moderate a panel with our two industry guests. Craig Allen is the chief executive officer of Spark Unlimited, a Sherman Oaks-based game company that has produced several shooter games for consoles; he also previously worked with Jim Henson Interactive's digital media activities. Joining him will be Tracy Fullerton, a University of Southern California associate professor and game designer. She wrote Game Design Workshop: A Playcentric Approach to Designing Innovative Games, and is currently working on an experimental game revolving around Henry David Thoreau's experiences at Walden Pond.

Why the hell did this have to be at the LA offices?
Kind of odd seeing as I will be in DC with Banjos next week on job interviews. Which means.......booze?
I was a little disappointed, as well, but it's not likely I'd be able to attend no matter where they held it (unless it was in Montana).
unless it was in Montana
You lucky bastard.
Surprisingly, I'll be in California that week... in Goleta.
But that's about a thousand miles closer than I normally am, so maybe I'll celebrate with a hit and some GTA.
Job interviews in DC? You going to the dark side?
I'm kind of confused actually. Is he letting his woman work? How will she continue her role as mother to the new libertarian master race?
I might actually be able to attend this one.
Food trucks, eh? Which ones?
It could have been mine had I gotten the financing done.
FFFFFFFFFUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU!!!!!!!!!!!
You never told me what kind of food you wanted to make.
No business plan, not even one on a cocktail napkin.
TNT
Taters n' Tits.
Burgers and dogs. Everything including the bread homemade (which means we need an oven on the truck or at the commissary. Homemade mayo and sauces as well. Handcut fries that are actually good. Chix sammiches. Fish sammich.
All very gourmet but reasonable.
Gourmet, but reasonable
Been done
What were you going to call it?
Bob's Burgers.
Liberty Grill
Homemade mayo
Of the artisan variety?
Oh yeah. We have about 8 recipes already put together and tested out. We really like 6 of them and 2 are a bit iffy for my tastes but others tended to like them.
Well, I might finally make one of these L.A. area meetups. Even though this kinda messes with my avid distaste for going to the westside.
Back to the subject (loosely) of video games: I'm in the market for a video game for PS3 (because I'm not inclined to pay for PS4 until they only make the latest Madden for that console). Generally a fan of RPGs and sports games. Any suggestions? (for hints as to RPG games I enjoy: GTA franchise, Elder Scrolls franchise, Left Behind, etc.)
Borderlands 1 and 2, dude. Always Borderlands. FPS RPG with randomized loot drops and all action.
If you have a PC you can get Path of Exile for free from Steam, and it's a surprisingly addicting RPG in the Diablo mold. In fact, the guy who told me about it described it as "the proper successor to Diablo II".
My only PC is a laptop, with built-in graphics card, so I'll probably have to hold off on PoE. But I do recall you talking up Borderlands quite a bit. I'll give that a whirl then.
PoE's graphics aren't insane or anything (isometric Diablo-style), so your laptop might be able to handle it. Seeing as it's free, you might as well try.
Will my enjoyment of the game be greater if I start with 1 (storyline continuity, character export, etc.)?
It doesn't make that much difference story-wise (the story is quite thin), but if you start with B1 you can see the original character classes and play them, as well as there being some really, really fun DLCs for it (the Zombie Island one and the General Knox one). Plus you'd experience the franchise from the beginning. I personally loved B1 and would recommend playing it first, as long as you have the time, because you can spend a lot of hours playing Borderlands.
Slap Dadppy said that aint gonna cut it man.

That's really cool. I would be interested in seeing more graphs of different information you pull from these logs.

I was reading your Pokemon Go hack article and wondered if you had considered creating an ebook on this subject. Your writing would sell it fast. You have a lot of writing talent.
