Kindergarten Show Canceled So Kids Can Be 'College and Career Ready.' Thanks Obama!

The interim principal of a primary school in Elwood, New York sent a letter home to students informing parents the Kindergarten play scheduled for May would be cancelled, because of "the demands of the 21st century," saying the reason the show was cancelled was because the school was "responsible for preparing children for career and college with valuable skills."
I'm no education specialist, but I don't think I need an Ed.D. to understand that putting on a show in Kindergarten actually does prepare children with valuable skills; public speaking, teamwork, thinking creatively, etc.
Thanking Obama for this one would not be much of a stretch. From the Washington Post:
This didn't come out of the blue. Kindergarten (and even preschool) has increasingly become academic — at the expense of things such as recess and the arts — in this era of standardized test-based school reform. In most states, educators are evaluated in large part on test scores of students (sometimes students they don't have) and on showing that their students are "college and career ready," the mantra of the Obama administration's education initiatives.
The Post was able to confirm the authenticity of the letter, which they've posted, but could not get anyone to comment on the record about it other than a spokesperson telling them there was nothing to add.

Good to see the spirit of Prussian education lives on in our great republic.
2. Learning how to count to five.
That's what happens when you let kids do plays in kindergarten.
It happened to me, don't let it happen your kids.
THREE SIR!
Learning to count to three. Five is right out.
Four shalt thou not count, neither count thou two, excepting that thou then proceed to three.
Oh, horseshit, it just means the money they raised for costumes and piano rental went instead for booze at the office party.
Man arrested in Britain for quoting a Winston Churchill book about Muslims.
From another article I read, a woman asked the man if he had 'authorization' to give the speech. When he said no, she said 'it's disgusting' and called the police.
This is what a fascist state looks like.
Now available at an American university campus near you.
I don't think so. Especially the part about the police van. Campus speech codes are disgusting but the consequences for violating them are noncoercive -- something libertarians would support if it were a factory instead of a university.
But universities are not factories, which is the entire point.
FIRE is unbelievably awesome. I don't think I've ever disagreed with a free speech position they took.
They may not be bound by the First Amendment, but private institutions are still legally obligated to provide what they promise. Private institutions may not engage in fraud or breach of contract.
Show me where FIRE has ever sued a private university for "breach of contract" over a speech code. Everything I've seen them do is 1st amendment cases against public unis. So either they don't believe their own rhetoric or private unis are totally free of speech codes.
Promotional materials aren't a contract either, the best you could do is sue them for false advertising, and good luck with that when the advertisement is so vague.
FIRE doesn't sue anyone. They write angry letters and press releases, and it usually doesn't go on beyond that point. When it does, they find a 1A lawyer in their "network" to file suit.
If you bother to look at their website, you will see that in most instances, the issues they have brought up with private universities have been resolved without suit, as is also true of many or most of their issues with public universities.
So they're screwing over all the students who are defrauded and have contracts breached by the universities? There are damages to be won if those accusations are true. time for FIRE to put up or shut up w.r.t. fraud and breach of contract.
FIRE has gone after literally dozens of private universities, including Gonzaga, Marquette, Depaul and Catholic University of America.
They explicitly state that they have no intention of ever going after BYU or Liberty because they both explicitly state what they allow and don't allow, and therefore it's inconceivable anyone could attend those universities without knowing what was allowed and not allowed. They don't go after military academies for the same reason.
Here's an article about fire getting private university Gonzaga to revoke an onerous hate speech punishment.
As for the point about the difficulty of suing private universities, FIRE often wins those kinds of fights by calling attention to the issue, putting pressure on administrators, and organizing protests.
By "go after" you mean "complain about", not take legal action against. Since they're not suing, the claims of fraud and breach of contract are just bluster. If they really had a case for fraud they could send a seriously strong message by forcing a uni to pay damages.
If they wanted to say the policies are bad then they should say that, not this crap about fraud.
You just like to bitch, don't you? Let me ask a question: What the fuck is the point of suing a university if you can get them to change their speech codes without the lawsuit?
Why spend the cost on a law suit when you can get the university to play ball much more quickly, more efficiently, and with less cost?
You're basically whining that FIRE isn't stupid enough to file meaningless lawsuits when they don't have to.
If they're defrauding people or breaching contracts they need to pay damages to the victims. I'm sure those students and families could use a refund on their fraudulently-charged tuition.
So, the only meaningful way to change behavior is to make it painful?
My point isn't that FIRE should be suing, my point is they know damn well there's no fraud or breach of contract and are just throwing those claims out there to look good.
they have no intention of ever going after BYU or Liberty
Uh oh, SOCONsz!
From a libertarian POV they are. Is there a special academic exemption to the NAP?
Go away Tulpa.
I was getting the same vibe while reading his comments.
Most universities are public institutions, so there's that.
Students don't work for the university. Students are the customers!
Comrade Weston must be made to understand that there is no truth but revolutionary truth.
But they have free healthcare.
I think you mean: But they have "free" "healthcare".
The are free from the bonds of needing to pay for their healthcare...so long as they comply.
Hey, maybe we should post that on the "Opposite Of America" Facebook page thingy.
^^ What is this?!?!
Sloopy has a really good link on his Facebook page. I'll go see if I can find it...

*Hacks and spits*
Despite being under attack, 1A is huge and we tend to take it for granted to a degree. I think about this every time I hear about a holocaust denier being dragged off to jail in Germany.
And this is GB, for the love of Christ. Aren't they "supposed to be" the second freest nation on earth?
Not that we are first any longer...
Great Britain has always been horrible on speech. Take their unbelievably punitive libel laws that require a hell of a lot less evidence than ours do. That's why GB is a popular destination for libel tourism
In Britain in the late '80s, there were Muslims marching in the street demanding that Salman Rushdie be murdered after the fatwa was issued against him.
A correspondent asked a cop why the people marching weren't being arrested for incitement to murder, and was told the cops had been told to 'play it cool.' When the correspondent further pressed the police officer, the cop said "Fuck off, or I'll arrest you."
This is the biggest problem with supposedly enlightened laws against hate speech. They are NEVER applied evenly. Hate speech laws are always applied against the majority group and in favor of the minority group, even when the minority group is legitimately inciting murder.
Of course, incitement to murder should be a crime in any rational society, so the fact that they were allowed to do that to a British citizen on British soil is itself a travesty.
Depends on how you define "hate speech laws", because if you include blasphemy, then in countries like Turkey, Malaysia, and Pakistan, they've been used my the majority Muslim population against religious minorities who attempt to speak for their interests as "hurting the sentiments of Islam" or something to that effect.
Those aren't hate speech laws, they're blasphemy laws. Hate speech laws are laws designed supposedly to stop people from saying hateful and racially incendiary things to one another.
Blasphemy laws are just a subset of Hate Speech laws.
Not necessarily. Blasphemy includes arguments over what can only be called procedure, for instance whether bread and wine symbolize the host, or actually transubstantiate into flesh and blood. Back in the day people got executed over that but the statement itself wasn't "hate speech."
YMMV
That's kind of hard to justify, since you can blaspheme Allah (for example) while having no ill will toward Muslims.
Oh yeah? Try telling Muslims that. I'll pay for your ticket over here.
Anerica really does have the best best free speech protections in the world.
The content-neutral standard is pretty important since it would have protected this guy if he did that over here.
Churchill on Afghan Pashtuns
http://www.gutenberg.org/files.....9404-h.htm
"... a continual state of feud and strife prevails throughout the land. Tribe wars with tribe. The people of one valley fight with those of the next. .. Every tribesman has a blood feud with his neighbor. Every man's hand is against the other, and all against the stranger.
Nor are these struggles conducted with the weapons which usually belong to the races of such development. To the ferocity of the Zulu are added the craft of the Redskin and the marksmanship of the Boer. The world is presented with that grim spectacle, "the strength of civilization, without its mercy." ...The weapons of the nineteenth century (21st?) are in the hands of the savages of the Stone Age.
Every influence, every motive, that provokes the spirit of murder among men, impels these mountaineers to deeds of treachery and violence. The strong aboriginal propensity to kill, inherit in all human beings, has in these valleys been preserved in unexampled strength and vigour. That religion, which above all others was founded and propagated by the sword?the tenets and principles of which are instinct with incentives to slaughter and which in three continents has produced fighting breeds of men?stimulates a wild and merciless fanaticism. ..."
Pashtuns? We're talking about a people who would execute POWs by having their women urinate in their prisoners' mouths until they drowned.
When you're wounded and left on Afghanistan's plains,
And the women come out to cut up what remains,
Jest roll to your rifle and blow out your brains
An' go to your Gawd like a soldier.
Quite funny coming from Churchill. That said, the Pashtuns definitely have a history of not fucking around, to say the least, as HM alludes to.
My only point was to provide some example of Winston's POV re: "the Savages".
I like the way he writes, FWIW. He was good at turning a phrase.
And that "pissing in POWs mouths" thing is cute, HM; however, I think Death by Urophagia was probably more apocryphal than the "Pashtun S.O.P." Most of the historical records i've seen of the Afghan wars had women ensconced indoors far from any battlefields. Putting the wife's coochie in Englishmen's faces was probably low on the priority list.
Is it stealing when you take money from a dead guy?
We'll see if being a brave public servant makes a difference.
I'm kind of curious why he didn't get arrested and have to do a perp walk. It's over the threshold of grand larceny, right?
What's wrong with stealing from brave public servants, especially once they've croaked? 😉
Mendoza! You're off the case! Turn in your badge.
Run over your wife with a car and go to jail. Hopefully the fact that he's still getting paid might help him meet that $200k bail requirement.
Although the excuse is stupid, you can bet 95% of the kindergartner's parents were relieved when the show was cancelled.
I'm soon to be an uncle and I understand this completely.
Here's a tip for being a good uncle. For Christmas a few years ago I sent my sister's little girl, who was 6 or 7 and interested in sciency stuff, an ant farm. I also gave her younger brother a hammer.
I, being child-free, like to give the noisiest most annoying toys imaginable.
Because...
I'm a dick!
Many years back, when my nephew was about 4 or 5, his parents taught him how to be polite to people who gave him gifts. Somebody bought him a battery-operated toy, but wrapped the batteries separately. So the kid opens the batteries first, holds them up and says, "Just what I ALWAYS WANTED!"
As a good grandpa I have given duck calls to my 3 and 5 year old grandsons. Mom did not appreciate the slingshots or blowguns. I gave them Bug-A-Salt guns for shooting flies. They prefer to shoot slugs so they can watch the slugs melt. The oldest grandson is getting a Steven's Favorite .22 rifle and a pocketknife for Christmas (he'll be six). I have taught them important things like "Don't pick up the dead stuff in the ditch, you poke it with a stick!" and "Horse turds are fun to throw at your mom".
My little brother is a dick. Every gift he gives says "AGES 13 AND UP!" or "ADULT SUPERVISION REQUIRED!!!". My oldest is 6.
I have a whole cabinet full of fireworks in the garage that he gave my son when he was 4.
I think I'd like your brother. 😉
I told him that we are out of space, and to only get the kids things that are small. So for christmas, he got this:
http://www.onestepahead.com/ho.....n-play.pro
I went over the next day and left it in his yard.
Is that where he buys all of your kids' toys? Because it's appropriately named.
I feel like I won this round. He has a giant ball in his yard, and all of the neighbors have seen it. He can't just roll it down the street now, because somebody will bring it back.
In his defense, you told him you were out of space, so he got them something deflatable.
I think you're being too hard on the guy.
If you knew my brother, you wouldn't give him the benefit of the doubt. He's a trouble maker just like me.
I live in an HOA, and he deliberately does donuts on the lawn so my neighbors will complain and get me fined. He's that kind of guy.
"I live in an HOA, and he deliberately does donuts on the lawn so my neighbors will complain"
I like your brother. If I were him i'd save up all my beer cans to throw in your supposed-to-be-separated-for-recycling trashcans.
FWIW, I learned about HOAs recently, and have decided that they are the tool of Satan.
It's like a drug habit. It's great at first, and then it becomes a big problem.
FWIW, I learned about HOAs recently, and have decided that they are the tool of Satan.
I'd say they were being urinated out of the tool of Satan.
During my son's preschool Christmas program, a little girl got sick and puked on all the kids in front of her. That part was edited out of the $9.99 CD the school sold to interested parents (everyone).
I'd be more inclined to buy the unedited version.
I know, right. But we didn't find out it was edited out until after the purchase.
An Ed D is absolutely essential to convincing yourself a bunch of five year old kids are all destined for identical educational fates twelve or fifteen years down the road.
What a maroon.
Even in Germany, they don't start tracking until the end of fourth grade.
And the really stupid part is that fifteen years from now things will have changed.
When I was in the eighth grade a counselor apologized profusely when scheduling conflicts pushed me into a typing class. After all, I was college-bound and male, and would always have a secretary.
Now preschool features "keyboarding," and by 2030 keyboards may be obsolete.
Now preschool features "keyboarding," and by 2030 keyboards may be obsolete.
I'm sure they'll upgrade those lessons to 'twit-pic'ing'.
I can't fault Obama for thinking he could've been better educated.
I'm kind of curious why he didn't get arrested and have to do a perp walk. It's over the threshold of grand larceny, right?
Fucking professional courtesy- how does it work?
THESE CHILDRENS SHOULD BE PRAYIN' TO GAWD FOR THERE SALVATION!

No, they've already decided who the next generation of "leaders" will be, and they won't be coming from that school.
This seems relevant.

" preparing children for career and college with valuable skills."
I'd like to use a variation of that at work:
Boss: Why didn't you come to work yesterday?
Me: I canceled work because I was busy preparing myself for the rest of my life.
To my mind it is parents` duty to prepare their children for college and future career. It is evident that they will not teach children in the kindergarten how to write application essays (as here you can find Help On Essay
