Yale Refuses to Believe that Skinny Student Is Just Thin, Tries to Make Her Pork Up
Shouldn't one of the top colleges in the country know that the Body Mass Index (BMI) is just a guide, not a whole diagnosis? Apparently not at Yale, though perhaps they're now learning. Frances Chan, 20, has been fighting with the college over how much she weighs, as though it's their business. The 5-foot-2-inch history major weighs 92 pounds.
That's not enough for Yale. They wanted her to put on weight, convinced she had an eating disorder. She insisted that she didn't and that she was just thin, which should have ended the whole thing, but did not. The college's health center harassed her, ordered her in for weekly weigh-ins, and they threatened to put her on medical leave, telling her she'd die if she didn't gain more weight. What they wouldn't do is apparently actually listen to her, so she took to the Huffington Post to write an essay about the torment:
She had finally cracked me. I was Sisyphus the Greek king, forever trapped trying uselessly to push a boulder up a hill. Being forced to meet a standard that I could never meet was stressful and made me resent meals. I broke down sobbing in my dean's office, in my suitemate's arms afterwards, and Saturday morning on the phone with my parents. At this rate, I was well on my way to developing an eating disorder before anyone could diagnose the currently nonexistent one.
It seems Yale has a history of forcing its students through this process. A Yale Herald piece from 2010 told the story of students in similar situations. It's disturbing how little things have changed. "Stacy" was "informed that if she kept failing to reach [Yale Health]'s goals for her, she would be withdrawn for the following semester." Unfortunately, "the more she stressed out about gaining weight, the more she lost her appetite."
Furthermore, a recent graduate messaged me saying that her cholesterol had actually gone up due to the intensive weight-gain diet she used to release herself from weekly weigh-ins.
The New Haven Register picked up on the story this week and reports that after all this nightmarish treatment, Chan finally got a doctor to acknowledge that BMI is just one indicator of proper health and the school finally seems to grasp that she does not have an eating disorder. They're still going to force her come visit the health center for monitoring, but only once per semester. She should consider herself lucky!

It's time parents start homeschooling their kids through college, I think.
Keggers and dorm room sex could get kind of...awkward.
Yes, well, to parents, that's a feature rather than a bug. And the not SPENDING TOO FUCKING MANY TENS OF THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS part.
Not to mention fucking your professors for a grade.
Yes, that's right out. In most parts of the country, anyway.
I know the government and the academic establishment would oppose this, but at what point can I get an accredited degree on-line for cheaps? I'm sure the entrenched ACADEMIC-INDUSTRIAL COMPLEX will attempt to deliver such education at full-bubble-price levels, but you would think there would be a point where that could be challenged.
at what point can I get an accredited degree on-line for cheaps?
There's a lot of options already that fit that criteria. My entire undergrad degree at the regionally accredited online school I attended cost around 21k
STOP RESISTING.
Too fat, too skinny, too rich, too poor, too smart, too dumb. . .I have this weird vision that someone wants themselves cloned and everyone else exterminated.
It's like some warped chimera of Harrison Bergeron and 1984.
A uniform society where everyone looks, acts, and thinks the same is easier to control.
That sounds like the ultimately tolerant society!
shes wanting me less and im wanting her more, cumbersome.
They take this whole "skull and bones" thing a little too seriously there.
I've had some interesting academic conflicts with a major department of Yale Medical School (I'm 3000 miles away and affiliated with a completely different institution.) We had to drop a team of their physicians from a research project on evidence-based, best practices guidelines for improving treatment of patients in ERs. Their team refused to believe that coercive treatments such as putting patients into leather restraints and forcibly medicating with strong, caustic antipsychotic medications was something that should be avoided. Even though our data showed that most coercion was often unnecessary, and more benign, voluntary meds actually had superior outcomes, they said our work was "advocacy" and they saw no reason to go against the "tried and true" coercive measures.
So after that, I guess I'm not surprised to hear they are coercive to their own students' eating habits.
..."a research project on *evidence-based*, best practices guidelines"...
It's a shame you had to specify that.
Even more so that the Yalies would see documented "evidence" from dozens of peer-reviewed articles as "advocacy". I was pretty flustered for awhile after hearing their nonsense -- I even spent about half an hour telling my secretary what morons the entire Yale faculty must be.
For comparison, everyone's favorite libertarian pornstar Belle Knox is two inches taller, but weighs the same. According to this NSFW source anyway.
Also "pornstar" is not in Firefox's spell check. I'm boycotting Mozilla!
Also "pornstar" is not in Firefox's spell check. I'm boycotting Mozilla!
Especially surprising given that 95% of the internet is porn.
Is it not two words?
I call bullshit. As someone who has seen Belle Knox's entire body, I don't believe for a second she's 92 lbs.
She is too thin for my taste, but 5'4" and 92 lbs is simply ludicrous. They're either lying about her weight or she has dreams of playing in the WNBA and started bullshitting about her height ahead of time.
"She can eat all she wants and stay thin? I *hate* her...let's make her life as miserable as possible."
NOTE: Just a joke, ha ha, nobody at Yale said anything remotely like this.
You don't need the NOTE subtext. Its not like you made allegations about sheep-fucking.
Methinks you missed the joke.
Any of the usual derp in the PuffHo comments on this?
They are mostly supportive of the author. Then there is this
Because as we all know, people in positions of authority always and everywhere have only the best of intentions.
I really hope that was intended to be sarcasism, but with HufflePuff you can never be sure.
That was obvious sarcasm.
There is no way this sentence is serious.
The fuck? It's like no one at Yale had ever seen an Asian woman before.
I wonder if the other women mentioned in the post are also asian? If so, seems like they could claim racial discrimination and sue the fuck out of Yale.
It's like no one at Yale had ever seen an Asian woman before.
A few manage to slip past the admissions committee.
Why the hell is this even a thing at Yale?
The irony is that if she was a fat load they would have never in a million years tried to force her onto a diet for fear of being accused of fat shaming. In fact, they would have probably helped her get a mobility scooter.
Hey, thanks, I'll talk to my doctor and decide what the fuck I need to do, if anything. Or not. I'm a FUCKING ADULT AND A FREE WOMAN.
A fat load? This isn't Belle Knox, dude.
I'm still wondering why her answer wasn't "FUCK YOU". Is it telling that they seem to be bullying a tiny little woman instead of some huge fat guy? I swear to Jeebus, this is just another example of how anyone these days who gravitates to a job with any sort of power whatsoever over anyone is almost assuredly a little dictator/fascist in waiting.
There should be a new profession, like a patient adviser or lawyer. In this profession, when you're getting the shaft from the Man, the professional will advise you in the best and legally safest way of saying "FUCK YOU, YOU FUCKS," depending on your circumstances.
What a surprise that this statement is coming from a lawyer. I think there should be a new profession to, that of "Lawyer Hunter". I volunteer my skills for this profession. Also, ProL, I left your basement door unlocked when I was watching your family last night. I think that's how I'll hunt you first.
No, no, not a lawyer. At least, not necessarily. Patient advocates, for instance, aren't always attorneys.
In fact, I think you'd make a fine FUCK YOU adviser, except that I might not recommend you to someone who needs a more nuanced FUCK YOU. And, to be sure, Warty has the FUCK YOU with violence gig locked up, and SugarFree has the FUCK YOU with disgust job, too. John, well, he's the FUCK YOU to skinny women guy.
I'd like to think I have the FUCK YOU with extra FUCK YOU gig locked up.
Ah, yes, here you are in the Association of FUCK YOU Professionals directory, listed under "FUCK YOU with FUCKING Emphasis."
Shit, here we go with the credentialism again.
So how many hours of training at an accredited institution do I need to take before I can get in on this lucrative field of FUCK YOU-ism? And would I have to take a number of unpaid continuing education classes each year?
Look, we're libertarians, but phukunologists are expected by consumers to have certain skills and credentials. Certainly, you're welcome to take courses or even apprentice with trained experts to bolster your resume.
For instance, if you want a certification as a phukunologist with a specialty in abuse, I recommend Dr. Episiarch, though I'd opt for tapes and eschew personal instruction.
"this is just another example of how anyone these days who gravitates to a job with any sort of power whatsoever over anyone is almost assuredly a little dictator/fascist in waiting."
Yes
I suspect that the Yale administrators who are harassing this woman are jealous fat broads who also harbor racial animosity towards Asian women.
Whether that's the case or not, that's the tack her lawyer should take when drafting a "fuck off and mind your own business or I'll sue your stupid asses" letter to the university.

We have to stop this thinness epidemic in America. She's setting a bad example for all the land whales.
Yale Refuses to Believe that Skinny Student Is Just Thin, Tries to Make Her Pork Up
Anybody else think that this is a job for reason.com poster John?
No, but I wonder if the real issue here is that Yale feels there's a porn-star gap between it and Duke.
Isn't that what putting lipstick on a pig is part of?
You know, making your pork up.
The problem isn't that she's too thin, it's that she's too tall. Her BMI would be perfect if Yale could just compress her spine a few inches.
Thank you, Professor Procrustes!
If she's got no bikini bridge, she's too fat.
This shows that Yale is over-rated hogwash in terms of legitimate intelligentsia.
College administrators... is there anything they don't know?
College administrators... is there anything they don't know?
Absolutely not. Having an advanced degree in anything, makes you an expert in everything else, even things that you don't even know that exists yet.
I've experienced this form of arrogance first hand, doing IT consulting work for Universities. Any client you have who has a PhD after their name, knows more about software development than you do, even though they've never designed a solution or written one line of code in their entire life.
"We need a solution that has a one-click parameter for indexing the student data with the results and arrays them based on their trend. We want an object-oriented approach to commenting so that other people can maintain your work, and that I can go in and make modifications to increase the neural network of the software code lines."
The real problem I see with that, is that indexed student data has a way of getting quantum entangled with the neural software code, which has an effect like golf balls in a clothes dryer lined with 2 way mirrors.
That's a good starting point.
I'm guessing by that picture, that she's Asian. I have known a few Asians who would eat a lot and stay rail thin. But what they were eating, was the food from their own culture. You know, rice, veggies, meat, real food.
Almost anyone can eat like that and stay thin. Eating the super carb loaded foods in the standard American diet and/or drinking too much alcohol is what keeps most of us fat.
But she may make the porkers on campus feel bad, and we can't have that. That's just a step or two away from fat shaming and intolerence! We must enforce a living weight for all co-eds as they may not be able to support a family when they are at such a low weight.
IOW, you mean she must alter her lifestyle to appease the screeching harpies?
Not only that, but since she had not made enough unprivilege points to advance to "oppressed" level, she needs to either get drunk at a party and accuse a random white guy of rape, or become transgender.
Harpies eat liver, right?
They eat souls, dude, they eat souls...
I don't think harpies eat anything. They just steal whatever you're eating.
Oh, that's right, they eat all of the food then shit on whatever is left that they don't eat. It's the eagle eating Prometheus' liver I'm thinking of.
And isn't it wonderful that Michelle Obama is goading American schools into providing fat-free, high-carb meals for young students? Low-salt too, even though that is likely more dangerous than heavily salted foods for most individuals? Way to push 25-year-old discredited diets as "healthy", Michelle!
The low fat diet fad is the one of the dumbest things ever pushed onto the American public. You actually need fat in your diet for proper brain function, etc., and protein for many other things.
A high carb diet is the most dangerous thing you can do. That's why there are so many diabetics these days.

"You actually need fat in your diet for proper brain function, etc"
Uh..maybe that's why the progs don't want others to eat fat.

Very astute observation, that "Frances Chan" is probably Asian.
...on the other hand
The squirrels are strong this evening.
Nothing insures that someone will never have an eating disorder like making them obsess over their weight and forcing them to eat amounts of food they're uncomfortable with.
All I know is, don't Google "90 lb Asian."
Search produces many links for "90 lb Asian v. BBC". Must be a video of a small Asian woman confronting a reporter from the British Broadcasting Corporation.
I had a GF long ago who was 5'5" and weighed 97 lb. She would have been locked up at Yale and tube-fed, apparently.
She would have been locked up at Yale and tube-fed, apparently.
As opposed to Duke, where she would have been tied down and tube-fed.
Whack jobs are everywhere - including at Yale.
Jesus. Christ.
Oh, hell, there have been whack jobs at Yale forever.
She needs to get diet advice from the master:

I think Yale administrators need to lose some weight... by DYING IN A FIRE!
I know, I know. Two days from now, when a bunch of Yale admins die in an actual fire, I'm gonna look like a real asshole.
The fat will burn first, right?
"See, I just visited Duke, and they told me they've got this porn star, see. I'm pretty much a total loser except for my grades and my parents' money, so I figure I could pay her to star in a private film project with, um, me.
What does Yale have to offer me?"

You can say that again!
