Brickbat: Separate but Unequal
The Staff, Faculty and Administrators of Color of South Puget Sound Community College not only did not invite any white colleagues to a scheduled happy hour meeting, they explicitly excluded them. "If you want to create space for white folks to meet and work on racism, white supremacy, and white privilege to better our campus community and yourselves, please feel free to do just that," said an email sent by the group to college employees. After media picked up the story, the group canceled the meeting, and the school's dean of college relations called it a mistake. But Karama Blackhorn, program coordinator for the school's Diversity and Equity Center and co-author of the the invitation, says only that the email could have been worded better.

"When trying to explicitly talk about race it can be a really difficult conversation for a lot of people," said Blackhorn.
When trying to speak in a coherent manner it can be difficult to follow basic rules of grammar for a lot of race hustlers.
Just keep flaunting your linguistic privilege, person of pallor!
The guy looks like Artie from Warehouse 13
whoops, wrong thread
(hits self in head, mumbles "I'll have to cut myself extra for this screw up...stupid...stupid")
A bunch of people chose to hang out with each other. No-one was forced to do anything. I'm struggling to give a fuck about this.
Hey, we have permission now! Let's talk about how awesome it is to be white and how we can keep it that way.
There has been a dearth of practical upsides in deep blue NY.
Imagine for a moment that a white employee sent the equivalent of this email through the government employer's system. What do you suppose Karama Blackhorn's reaction would have been?
i take your point, but just because Karama Blackhorn might or might not) be a hypocrite who doesn't understand free association doesn't mean I have to have conniptions.
no conniptions needed, just a gentle pointing out of the contradiction.
South Puget Sound is never going to be more than just a community college if they can't embrace these kinds of exclusive racial clubs. Diversity is the opposite of university.
In fucking Seattle?!?! Do they even know what racism is?
I grew up in Portland and didn't see true racism until I went to college in CO [and that was by the "people of color" who met exclusively with themselves much like they wanted to do in Puget Sound CC]. Up until now I was convinced the farther you were from the south, the less people of all color gave a crap, but so much for that theory.
Back when I was young and naive, I used to think the objective of the civil rights movement was to get us to the point where we hardly notice and just don't care about race.
Yeah, I'm still holding out hope for that. It's like a 'have a dream' or something
Give up and go the route of Mencken.
the email could have been worded better
Nah, it was worded perfectly: the white oppressors ought to create their own reeducation camps while persons of color strategize about how to refuse & resist.
OK dude that is like totally absurd.

Freedom of association for me, but not for thee.
But, come on! Who would attend a social event like this except a bunch of losers who have zero ability to affect the world or even their immediate environment? This kind of race segregation is irrelevant because the people who organize it are irrelevant also.
This kind of race segregation is irrelevant because the people who organize it are irrelevant also.
Do you remember the Duke 'rape' case? It was quite relevant that (upper-class) white students were falsely accused by a black woman: there were lots of race-based accusations in the case, most of which wasn't taken back by those who flung it (Group of 88 &c).
Yeah, but how does the Duke case relate to a racial group organizing a social event? Showing a preference in organizing a segregated group doesn't raise to the level of a false criminal accusations and support for a false criminal accusation based on race.
Many of the 88 in the Duke case where white.
The point I'm trying to make is that "the people" who (try to) organize such segregated meetings aren't irrelevant at all.
Regarding the white members of the Group 88: true there were whites -- which indicates that the "people of color" are far from being irrelevant.
And you use the Duke case as proof? Bad example.
Speech codes on college campuses would be a better example if weren't for the complete dependence grievance groups have on while liberals to act as their enforcers. Again, segregated groups are powerless unless and until they get a larger group to act on their behalf. The segregation itself is a weakness.
The segregation itself is a weakness.
I disagree. It is a tactical tool: for example feminists go on about safe spaces for women in order to advance the notion that the (virtual) presence of men are inherently unsafe for women. Similarly, race 'activists' try to make the case that (virtual) presence of whites is inherently oppressive for "people of color": white 'supremacy' and 'privilege', which always manifest themselves, undermines non-whites' ability to organize, raise race consciousness &c.
In this particular case, Karama Blackhorn did not say that segregation was a mistake: rather the wording of the letter not inviting whites was a mistake. And calling Blackhorn 'irrelevant' is a big mistake: after all, we're talking about the program coordinator for the school's Diversity and Equity Center.
Karama Blackhorn, program coordinator for the school's Diversity and Equity Center, ... maintains the staff members of color would have a more honest discussion about race without white employees.
Ay Karama!
Wait, what?
*That* is Karama Blackhorn, HM.
*Please* tell me you didn't presuppose she was African-American.
Roughly translated:
"The bitch session wouldn't be as much fun if there were someone there to make us feel guilty about it."

Nice band name.
sounds more like the debut album by Space For White Folk

It's not what a person does that matters, it's who the person is that matters.
Principals trump principles.
I wonder why? Maybe because of people like Blackhorn. Who wouldn't like to have a conversation about race with someone who writes:
Whenever I meet up with other white people, it's all about supremacy and privilege every time, all the time.
the school's dean of college relations called it a mistake. But Karama Blackhorn, program coordinator for the school's Diversity and Equity Center and co-author of the the invitation, says only that the email could have been worded better.
So, "It was obviously a mistake" was obviously a mistake?
Both these clowns should be fired.
No no, you don't want them wandering the streets. Much better they stay in their sheltered workshop
Back in Denver I went to this trade school and took a cooking class. One day we served the entire school in an outdoor buffet. I was one of maybe a half dozen white people in the entire place. Anyway, as we were carrying stuff back in a black guy was holding the door. As I came to the door he looked at me and made a show of letting the door close. The security guard opened the door for me and asked the guy why he closed the door. The guy said "Cuz he's white."
Yet only white people are capable of racism.
Yet only white people are capable of racism.
Why do you think they cooked up the concept of privilege? Even they recognize that everybody is capable of being a dick, so they needed something to excuse themselves.
Ethnic privilege is a fact of life the world over; only the privileged ethnicity differs.
I do enjoy life's sweet ironies: A white guy who makes his living race baiting and perpetuating the idea that all "white" success comes from white privilege gets pissed off that a bunch of people accuse him of benefiting from white privilege.
Tim Wise
Of course, the idea of ethnic privilege relies on the assumption that the experiences, actions and abilities of individuals of the same skin color are the same.
Hmmm, this seems like flawed reasoning to combat racism but I just can't put my finger on it...
