Detained Pro-Morsi Demonstrators Have Been Tortured, Claim Relatives

Says prison officials have beaten the demonstrators

ALEXANDRIA, Egypt, Jan. 20 (UPI) — Egyptian prison officials tortured arrested demonstrators who support former president Mohamed Morsi, relatives of the arrested said in a statement Monday.

They claim authorities at Alexandria's Al-Hadra prison recently ordered soldiers to storm jail cells and beat prisoners with sticks and batons.

"A number of the prisoners were seriously injured in the head and face," the families said in the statement.
