Billie Jean King Sent to Tweak Russia's Homophobia at the Olympics
President Obama will not attend

President Barack Obama and other top political officials will not be attending the Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia. But never fear: While the president remains locked in a life-and-death battle with the Internet for the soul of Obamacare, he's sending a delegation to attend. That it includes the most famous openly gay athlete in the world is no doubt just a coincidence. From USA Today:
The White House delivered a strong message of opposition to Russia's anti-gay laws Tuesday with the announcement of its delegation to the opening ceremony of the Sochi Olympics.
The White House delegation will include an openly gay athlete: tennis great Billie Jean King.
It will not include the president, first lady or the vice president, all who headed the previous four Olympic delegations, or a cabinet secretary, only a former one. This marks the first Olympics since the 2000 Sydney Summer Games that a U.S. president, vice president, first lady or former president has not been a member of the delegation for the opening ceremony, which will be Feb. 7 in Sochi.
The delegation will also include openly gay Olympic medal-winning hockey player Caitlin Cahow:
"It's obviously a statement that's being made, but I think it's an incredibly respectful one," Cahow told USA TODAY Sports. "Basically, the White House is highlighting Americans who know what it means to have freedoms and liberties under the constitution. That's really what we're representing in Sochi and it's not at all different from what's espoused in the spirit of Olympism."
The delegation also includes figure skater Brian Boitano, and that's where that sentence ends, because apparently talking about his personal life is not one of the things Brian Boitano would do.
It's a fun, in-your-face decision, though it's not clear if it will have much of an impact beyond a signaling statement. Since Russia has decided to blame non-heterosexuals for its cultural ills, the blowback has arguably gone beyond anything President Vladimir Putin can control, even if he wanted to. Being openly gay (or even friendly to gays) has become increasingly dangerous in the country.
Bonus libertarian video! Something Brian Boitano would do is help John Stossel illustrate how "spontaneous order" works:

What Would Brian Boitano Do?
Your question is....FAAAAABuloussss!
Oh, thop it!
It's gonna be awesome when King is detained by the Russian authorities on bogus charges and Obama leaves her to rot in prison, because he's such a swell guy.
That it includes the most famous openly gay athlete in the world is no doubt just a coincidence.
Martina Navratilova might argue with that and, given her nation of origin, whatever "statement" this makes might have a larger impact. Still, we're talking optics from an administration that knows nothing else.
Greg Louganis?
What about that one guy in the NBA? What's his name?
I dunno either, but he was totally famous.

Hey, what is Martina Navratilova? Chopped liver?
I have to give some grudging credit to the administration for tweaking Putin like this, except one could also point out that in terms of international diplomacy, it's ham-handed and gauche, just like every other international diplomacy effort the administration undertakes. Still, it's better than kissing Putin's ass.
We have a little saying about incompetent managers who do meaningless shit and spend hours and days in pointless meetings. They're doing only thing they can do effectively.
I'm thinking that the shit Putin gives about this is going to be one of the more microscopic things that come out of next year.
So and ineffectual gesture that plays to the home crowd, and is pathetic.
Definitely in Obama's wheelhouse.
+1 shit.
You'd think Zerobama would better spend his gay-love time tweaking Michigan and Massachusetts to repeal their sodomy laws, but god forbid he upset any democrat-controlled states.
Maybe Vlad will remind him.
Again, he can't do those things, so he does what he can.
Wait a minute. Massachusetts recognizes same-sex marriages, but criminalizes sodomy?
" tennis great Billie Jean King."
I really don't follow tennis, so maybe one of you can tell me: how famous would she be if Bobby Riggs hadn't had the idea to take a dive for her?
-jcr
She'd be just as famous seeing as she was a great tennis player. As for a dive, that's contested. There's no reason the top female player in the world couldn't beat a 55-year-old former great male player, especially with the wooden rackets of the time. Superior male strength and speed (however much a 55 year old has) doesn't mean nearly as much with the old rackets as it does today.
Would Riggs even bring superior physical strength to a match with Venus Williams?
That's a more fair strength matchup than the linebacker-sized Serena.
As for a dive, that's contested.
It is, but the conspiracy theory is much more interesting than the actual match:

She was the top women's player of the time. How famous is Chris Everett, Martina Navratilova?
Wasn't Margaret Court ranked #1 at the time? I seem to remember reading that Riggs had smoked Court just a few months prior to getting crushed by BJK.
Correct.
King had Hall of Fame credentials long before the Riggs match. She was also outspoken on other fronts so 'kinda famous' is the answer.
This makes me miss tennis. I used to watch when it didn't suck.
This is neat and stuff, but does anyone think Obama would be doing this if it were the Summer Olympics? It's the fucking Winter Olympics! Like he actually cares! I mean, it's not like he can go watch basketball in Sochi.
Tennis is a very important sport in the Winter Olympics.
Ice tennis is a valid sport, hater!
Not since it became all about the outfits.
You have to hit the snow balls juuuust right, or they explode on your racquet.
You know who else was tweaked when he hosted the Olympics?
Bill Clinton?
Jesse Owens was a statement. This is almost nothing. Perhaps if each U.S. athlete wore a rainbow emblem as part of his/her uniform...?
Only send gay athletes. Lindsay Vonn can take one for the team.
Tiger Woods is part black, and he's dating her. Therefore: RACIST!
CURSES!
How does geeky looking Tiger Woods get all the hot chicks? Oh yeah, he has a HUGE bank balance, if you know what I mean.
I really don't think Billie Jean King twerking is going to help.
Obama doesn't want be in Russia during the winter, and Putin doesn't give a damn if he shows up or not. (Nor does Putin give a damn about a 70s sports icon--he's not going to throw her in jail, he's just going to ignore her.) A no-cost sop to Obama's base.
Whether it's the gay propaganda bill or Pussy Riot, everyone seems to expect Putin to simply decree a reversal, and ignore what he keeps saying about his powers being constitutionally limited. Shouldn't we be encouraging the maturation of an independent Russian judiciary?
the most famous openly gay athlete in the world
Your generational bias is showing.
Billie Jean King is a very famous tennis player . not only she got many tittles , but also she has done so much things to promote tennis development?
