Iowa Town Working on Ordinance to Limit Outdoor Lighting, Because It Trespasses Onto Neighboring Properties
Officials admit its not a problem but want to stop it before it starts, calling excessive outdoor lights annoying and a distraction
Mount Vernon city officials are crafting a new ordinance that aims to limit outdoor light pollution. The policy wouldn't affect anyone in residential zones, but many businesses in town.
Officials said excess light can waste energy and be annoying, trespassing onto neighboring properties and distracting drivers on the road. It's not a problem right now, but officials said they're working on a new city ordinance to stop it before it starts.
