TIME Defends Christie Cover

TIME Executive Editor Michael Duffy has defended the magazine's recent cover, which includes a silhouetted photo of Christie (who was re-elected as New Jersey's governor on Tuesday) and the caption "Elephant in the Room."
From NJ.com:
Time Magazine Executive Editor Michael Duffy took to the airwaves last night to defend his magazine's most recent cover, which has sparked outrage this week for its thinly veiled shot at Gov. Chris Christie's weight.
The cover features a silhouetted photo of the governor beside the caption "Elephant in the Room." After the cover was revealed yesterday, the Twittersphere erupted with condemnation for the magazine.
"Whether or not one likes Christie, these cheap shots--like Time's new cover--about his weight are decidedly uncool," tweeted New York Times reporter Steven Greenhouse.

Christie IS a transfat about to be banned. Fat is sin.
"'Whether or not one likes Christie, these cheap shots--like Time's new cover--about his weight are decidedly uncool,' tweeted New York Times reporter Steven Greenhouse.
You're being so mean and hateful, you big meany.
HAH HAH!
But would it defend Obama as a monkey?
No, he's a Dem donkey so the Cover would read The Ass in the Room.
Fortunately, I don't see people as "fat." I'm adipocyte-blind.
You can have John's leftovers?
I've seen snippets on CNN in the morning about this. I really didn't understand what the deal was until I read about it ere just now.
Who cares if they imply that Christie is fat? He is.
Dude, you're so lipophobic.
NO FAT CHICKS
Does she pass the John test?
Damn you! I thought it was going to be one of those full figured models not just a fat chick.
Her tits are too small for John.
That...that wasn't cool, man. Not cool at all.
Antidote to the fat chick.
Can you eat bacon and still be a lipophobe?
I think "adipophobe" would be a better word to use then.
Where would you get such a silly idea? Bacon doesn't make you fat. It processes mean and lean in the human body. Carbs, depending on your body type, you eat more than a hundred cals at a setting, the remainder will not properly digest and instead accumulate as stored fat on your body mass.
I don't know why I wrote 'cals', I really don't. I hate people who use the cute word 'veggie' over 'vegetable'.
American-of-weight, I think you mean.
Oh. The outrage. This must stop. Stop I say. Oh.
Well, I can't get any more worked up about this than I did about "lipstick on a pig."
Where do fat people fall on the hierarchy of victims?
That depends. Fat women are below racial minorities, but above working moms. Fat men are somewhere between smokers and registered sex offenders.
I'd say it depends on what kind of statist legislation is up on the table. If you're trying to expand the ADA, fat people are victims who can't help it, and anybody who makes fun of one is an evil bigot. OTOH, if you're trying to socialize medicine, fat people are irresponsible hoarders who only care about themselves and need to be controlled.
At the bottom, if the other victims are lucky.
given the symbol for the GOP, it is at least an attempt at cleverness. Man, the church of the aggrieved and the offended is perpetually trolling for new congregants.
Pass the offering plate, Brother
Christie, the Elephant in the Room
vs.
Hillary, the Twerking Ass
There we go. That one wins.
This is almost as stupid since ESPN used "Chink in the Armor" to describe a bad game by Jeremy Lin a few years ago.
Did they show him in full plate mail?
Score one for Time. Just when I thought that establishment rag of power-fluffing milquetoasts is incapable of grazing the politically-incorrect.
I just looked at the cover picture, and it is pretty damn funny. His head looks like it could be used as a cannonball.
He really should consider trying to drop a couple of tons. It's going to be a borderline actuarial miracle if he makes it to November 2016 without dying of a heart attack.
He had surgery inserting a band around his stomach. It might not be obvious but he's already lost about 50lbs. My guess, he's loses another 75-100lbs by November of next year.
Weight will be a non-issue by election season. He'll be like a winning contestant on The Biggest Loser.
Which itself seems more debilitating than carrying the weight and losing it over a longer timeframe. Then again, I'm not a doctor; I don't even play one on TV.
He had surgery inserting a band around his stomach.
Which band, Led Zeppelin?
It's a lap-band made of silicone.
I have no love for Gov. McCheese, but if they ran with an Obama silhouette and 'The Monkey on Your Back' in reference to Obamacare, progs heads would be exploding.
You mean Kristie Kreme.
In all fairness, referring to black man as a monkey and referring to a morbidly obese republican as an elephant are not quite the same level of the playing field, offensive-wise.
Call Obama a jackass, and we're in analogy territory.
...that's the whole point. There's no objective reason they're different.
They should have had the headline read, "The Fat Bag of RINO Shit."
Or perhaps "Elephant Fucks RINO, Governor Born 16 Months Later."
Then people could have been legitimately offended. A little.
Sorry, but the only problem I can muster with the Christie fat jokes is that they're old. The guy's bee governor for four years now. And Jon Corzine was making jokes about his weight during the campaign. Christie's fat. Everyone knows it. I'm sure Christie knows it. Yeah, it was funny for a while. But, at this point? Why bother?
Because the man just looks the part of the unbelievably fat, rolly-chinned, bug-eyed Jabba the Hut of a politician so perfectly that the only thing that keeps him from being a perpetually funny walking punch-line is that the man has actual power, which makes him disturbing.
Hence, he is the perfect poster boy for the Republican Party in Democratic campaign literature.
What's Time?
It's the thing that keeps everything from happening at once.
I thought those were House Republicans.
It's like a blog. But it's printed on paper. And only updated like once a month.
Well, I'm certainly glad to see there's controversy over something important like the New Jersey governor's weight, instead of trivial pieces about things the New Jersey governor has done.
Plenty of time between 2013 and '16 to do the heavy lifting. Nick is likely weighing the options here before he goes large with a huge critique of Christie's thick record.
Tons of weighty decisions must be made. Any factor could be the one that potentially tips the scales. The masses will ultimately decide, but the gravity of the situation is enormous.
GOP == elephant
I thought was playing on that, not his size
It can be both.
The person who did the Art on the cover knew exactly what they were doing.
And I say it's damned clever.
Why isn't it posted or linked above? I Bing searched it, closest I could find.

Something tells me there wont be many more of these flattering covers for Christie coming out of Time magazine in the next three years, unless he is there dog in a fight with a conservative republican.
Poll: What is your reaction to Time magazine's new Chris Christie cover?
Let me know when they portray Harry Reid as the Dog in the Manger.
Nice.
I LOLed
Me too!
My last pay check was 9500 dolr working 12 hours a week online. My sisters friend has been averaging 15k for months now and she works about 20 hours a week. I can't believe how easy it was once I tried it out.
