Vatican spokesperson downplayed the report

The NSA spied on the Vatican ahead of this year's conclave to select a new pope, an Italian magazine reported Wednesday.

The Panorama weekly said the spy agency listened in on phone calls to and from the Vatican, including those of then-Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio – the future Pope Francis. The accusation is but the latest revelation of U.S. spying on world leaders that have angered U.S. allies across the world.
