Like it or not, writes Baylen Linnekin, a mandatory, uniform national GMO labeling scheme appears increasingly likely. Under a potential federal compromise, every food product label would have to identify whether or not the food contains GMOs. Testing and labeling costs would be substantial for farmers, producers, and sellers of all sizes. But small farmers and others--including consumers--would feel the brunt of the law.
