We have a tiered system based on residence type and square footage. I get the first some odd kwh for 10 cents, and then it goes up to 18 cents. 3rd tier is in the 20 cent range.

I make the 3rd tier almost every month, even though all of my lights are on timers and I have the fridge and TVs on energy save mode.

Of course, this being CA, if you have a plug in vehicle, the kWh used to charge are exempt from the tier and are subsidized.

To give an idea of how stupid the anti-gm tirade is, last night I tried to google how I could make my own garden of GM crops. I'm not trying to feed the world, but I do hate to weed, and there is a boreal bug that kills my zucchini plants every year by the end of July (which makes for a very shortened growing season of what we use most from our garden - and no, there is no insecticide that works on these fuckers), and finding varieties that are roundup ready and able to combat these damn bugs sans any effort from me would make my garden a far more productive plot.

What did I find?

Pages and pages and fucking pages about the evils of GM crops and how NOT to have them in your garden. No matter the way I phrased the search I got the same goddamn results. It took about 1/2 hours of reading through anti-GM Voodoo nonsense to discover that GM plants are only available to commercial farmers. So there are pages and pages on the tubes about how to grow your garden without any GM plants in it, and THERE ARE NO GM PLANTS THAT ONE CAN GET FOR YOUR GARDEN. Fucking idiots.

Here's an analogy. I live down the block from Le Diplomate, a popular newish restaurant in D.C. This restaurant, in the course of doing its business, generates a lot of trash. And by district law, like other commercial establishments it needs to pay a garbage company to haul that trash away. It would, of course, be cheaper for them to just leave the trash in the alley rather than paying for cleanup. But this wouldn't be a real efficiency gain of any kind. It's just that the cost of trash disposal would be shifted off the shoulders of Le Diplomate's owner (who conveniently lives in Philadelphia) and onto the shoulders of those of us who live on the block.

That's the basic business model of coal-fired power plants?huge costs are borne by people who use the air rather than by the people who burn the coal.

The "war on coal" consists of beginning to ask coal-burners to actually bear the costs of burning coal. A restaurant that's only going to be profitable if it's allowed to dump garbage in the alley rather than haul it away ought to be shut down.

So there's no difference between a restaurant in DC and a source of fuel that provides power to millions of people.

It's very simple. We cannot feed 300m+ people with 40 acre farms that produce 25% less food per acre than conventional farming methods. And that doesn't even account for GM crops which further enhance efficiency AND aids in environmental concerns by having to use far less herbicides, pesticides, fungicides, and water.

We have 4 acres that were considered unfarmable when we bought it-- hilly, clay soil, etc. Without any herbicides, pesticides, or fungicides, we can produce enough food on our farm to feed 4 people/acre.

There are over 400 million acres of cropland in the U.S., most of it more desirable farmland than ours. Farm it the way we farm ours, and it should produce enough food to feed 1.6 billion people. So we absolutely can feed 300m+ people with family farms.

Not saying we should, just that we can. While I'm not interested in growing GM crops, I don't think anyone should be prevented from doing so, as long as they aren't hurting anyone else.

Religious Freedom Agency Loses Attempt To Dismiss Former Employee's Discrimination Suit

In Ghori-Ahmad v. U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom, (D DC, Sept. 17, 2013), the DC federal district court refused to dismiss claims of religious and national origin discrimination, and of retaliation, bought by a former employee of the U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom. Ghori-Ahmad, a lawyer and expert on South Asian affairs, is a Muslim of Indian descent who in 2009 was originally offered a full-time job with USCIRF, but then had the offer rescinded and ended up with only a 90-day position that the agency refused to extend. Her lawsuit claims that her original offer was withdrawn, and her temporary position was not extended, because of anti-Muslim bias of two of the USCIRF commissioners. (See prior posting.) The court first rejected USCIRF's claim that as a matter of law Ghori-Ahmad was an independent contractor with the agency, not an employee covered by the anti-discrimination provisions of the Congressional Accountability Act when her position was not extended. It held that factual issues remain as to her status. The court also rejected USCIRF's claim that no materially adverse action had been taken against Ghori-Ahmad. The court, however, did dismiss plaintiff's detrimental reliance claim, refusing to exercise supplemental jurisdiction to hear it.
