Diplomats are warning Syrian rebels that if they don't buck up about Western countries declining to forcibly remove President Bashar Assad on their behalf, they may end up losing support. In the meantime, Syria has begun submitting info about its chemical weapons to a watchdog organization.

  • A report that just came out declaring that Americans are throwing away tons of perfectly good food because of how manufacturers define sell-by dates is actually a call for federal regulation of food labeling. Apparently neither manufacturers nor consumers can be trusted to decide when milk has gone bad.
  • The iPhone 5s hits the stores today, and you're already waiting in line, have waited in line, or will not be waiting in line under any circumstances.
  • President Barack Obama is willing to meet with the president of Iran at the United Nations next week to discuss its nuclear program.
  • A reporter in Joliet, Ill., is facing jail time for refusing to reveal who leaked him confidential information about a double homicide. A judge has given him 180 days to comply.
  • The EPA has unveiled its plan to force coal plants to reduce carbon emissions, which will require them to purchase expensive, cutting-edge equipment. Well, it must be great to be the manufacturer of such equipment!

      a double homicide

There are 53 players on the Cleveland Browns roster - they can handle two funerals on the same day.

There are 53 players on the Cleveland Browns roster - they can handle two funerals on the same day.

I eagerly await the day when this meme is no longer.

        1. Longtorso, Johnny   12 years ago

That will never happen. Keeping that meme alive is my one goal in life. It is the reason I wake up in the morning. It is my obsession. I'm going to hijack the anon-bot so it can post the meme after I shake off this mortal coil, and am buried by 6 Cleveland Browns.

          1. mad libertarian guy   12 years ago

I had originally typed "I eagerly await the day when this meme dies," but upon further thought just knew that it would prompt a "so the Cleveland Browns can let it down one last time" response and edited.

I may not like it, but I applaud your dedication to showing the world just how mediocre the Cleveland Browns are.

    3. Agammamon   12 years ago

ITs especially important - the horribleness of homicide increases proportionally to the square of the number of murders committed at once.

So a double homicide is 4 times worse than a single homicide.

And a right is deserving of protection inversely proportion to the horribleness of the crime it prevents police from solving.

So the first amendment is deserving of 1/16 the protection for double homocide cases.

      See, its simple math.

  3. Fist of Etiquette   12 years ago

The EPA has unveiled its plan to force coal plants to reduce carbon emissions...

So the Democrats have given up on winning any midterm elections for the foreseeable future.

What?!? Mine is like $350/month, and I don't have air conditioning!

        1. Apatheist ?_??   12 years ago

What are you paying per kwh? The lowest available rate to me right now is 8.4 cents. I've seen it as low as 5 though last year.

          1. playa manhattan   12 years ago

We have a tiered system based on residence type and square footage. I get the first some odd kwh for 10 cents, and then it goes up to 18 cents. 3rd tier is in the 20 cent range.

I make the 3rd tier almost every month, even though all of my lights are on timers and I have the fridge and TVs on energy save mode.

Of course, this being CA, if you have a plug in vehicle, the kWh used to charge are exempt from the tier and are subsidized.

If you're using orphan labor for that where are your slave-girls and eunuchs. They cost a little more, but they're worth every penny.

UBCM can't stomach genetically engineered foods

Municipal politicians rejected genetically engineered food by a narrow margin at the Union of B.C. Municipalities convention in Vancouver Thursday.

The resolution, brought up by the Vancouver Island community of Metchosin, called for a resolution to ask the province to ban plants and animals produced by using genetic engineering.

    The stupid, it burns!

    1. mad libertarian guy   12 years ago

To give an idea of how stupid the anti-gm tirade is, last night I tried to google how I could make my own garden of GM crops. I'm not trying to feed the world, but I do hate to weed, and there is a boreal bug that kills my zucchini plants every year by the end of July (which makes for a very shortened growing season of what we use most from our garden - and no, there is no insecticide that works on these fuckers), and finding varieties that are roundup ready and able to combat these damn bugs sans any effort from me would make my garden a far more productive plot.

      What did I find?

Pages and pages and fucking pages about the evils of GM crops and how NOT to have them in your garden. No matter the way I phrased the search I got the same goddamn results. It took about 1/2 hours of reading through anti-GM Voodoo nonsense to discover that GM plants are only available to commercial farmers. So there are pages and pages on the tubes about how to grow your garden without any GM plants in it, and THERE ARE NO GM PLANTS THAT ONE CAN GET FOR YOUR GARDEN. Fucking idiots.

      1. Tonio   12 years ago

So there are pages and pages on the tubes about how to grow your garden without any GM plants in it, and THERE ARE NO GM PLANTS THAT ONE CAN GET FOR YOUR GARDEN.

13 people shot last night in mass shooting in Chicago, media doesn't give a fuck:
    http://www.chicagotribune.com/.....2520.story

    1. playa manhattan   12 years ago

Reasons why: it was probably an illegal gun, so no opportunity to push for more gun control
      and:
      Chicago

      1. Fist of Etiquette   12 years ago

I think the "in Chicago" part is enough for the media blackout.

      2. fish_remote   12 years ago

Again I heard it reported that it was an "Assault Style" rifle....which I dismissed of course because it's not legal to have them in Chicago.

        ..and Chicago

      3. mad libertarian guy   12 years ago

None of it fits the narrative: that mass shooting are perpetrated by white gun nuts.

    2. John   12 years ago

But the mayor is right on it

Emanuel flew to D.C. last night to raise money for his campaign fund. The dinner fundraiser started at 6:30 p.m. Eastern time at Nopa Kitchen and Bar, 800 F Street, N.W., campaign consultant John Kupper said today. Emanuel was supposed to appear at a political fundraiser tonight for Democratic New Jersey U.S. Senate candidate Cory Booker.

Liberals don't even pretend to give a fuck anymore. Rehm to black Chigacoans "go fuck yourselves and stop embarrassing me, if you don't like it, what are you going to do? Vote Republican?"

I heard about it this morning and have wondered why there seems to be so little news about this. Weird.

    4. The Other Kevin   12 years ago

It's a big news story in Chicago. Along with the new title of "Murder capital of the US", which came out a few days ago.

      1. Bobarian   12 years ago

"Murder capital of the US"; was there celebrating? Didn't this used to belong to Detroit?

    5. Ted S.   12 years ago

I heard this story this monring on more than one of the international brodacsters I listen to.

      1. Ted S.   12 years ago

I should have added that I get the impression they made a big deal of it because it allowed them to stroke their anti-American boners.

    6. jesse.in.mb   12 years ago

Chicago Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy said it was a "miracle" no one was killed when someone opened fire with a high-

powered rifle at a pick-up basketball game in the Back of the Yards, and he renewed his call for a ban on assault weapons.

"A military-grade weapon on the streets of Chicago is simply unacceptable," McCarthy told a news conference this morning, 12 hours after

a 3-year-old boy and 12 other people were shot during at Cornell Square Park.

"It's a miracle there has been no fatality," he said. "Illegal guns. Illegal guns. Illegal guns drive violence."

      1. Pro Libertate   12 years ago

Okay, so banning guns didn't stop this shooting. What should they do, ban people next?

        1. Michael   12 years ago

The common assumption among progressives here in Chicago is that the gun ban needs to be extended outside of city limits, into the suburbs and beyond. They seriously think that gangbangers actually just drive out to the burbs to buy firearms as if it's as easy as buying bulk produce at Costco. Never mind that there's barely a shred of any kind of conclusive evidence of this actually going on.

          1. Pro Libertate   12 years ago

            Insanity. That's what it is.

          2. playa manhattan   12 years ago

It's way easier. You need a membership to shop at Costco.

        2. Marshall Gill   12 years ago

What should they do, ban people next?

No, double secret ban the guns!

          1. Pro Libertate   12 years ago

Guns are now on double-secret probation.

      2. playa manhattan   12 years ago

I would prefer that they just tell me the make, model, and caliber of the weapon. I'll form my own fucking opinion about how "powerful" the gun is.

      3. playa manhattan   12 years ago

        "Illegal guns drive violence."

Then why to they keep trying to make my otherwise legal guns illegal?

        1. Rich   12 years ago

          +9mm

      4. Sigivald   12 years ago

        "High-powered", "military-grade".

Well, in a world of competent reporting and competent Superintendents who were also honest, that would indicate something like a G3 or an M2 machinegun.

I suspect what it actually indicates is an AR-15 or maybe a beat-up SKS or semi-auto AK variant.

Hell, it might be a really fancy lookin' 10/22.

        1. playa manhattan   12 years ago

That's what I was thinking. The old M&P 15-22. Looks really scary, but barely powerful enough for squirrel hunting:

        2. Atanarjuat   12 years ago

Well, it went in a 3-year-old's skull and out his mouth, and his condition is reported as "fine, needing some plastic surgery". So it couldn't have been too ridiculously high-powered.

      5. Cdr Lytton   12 years ago

"A military-grade weapon on the streets of Chicago is simply unacceptable,"

Pretty sure the only legal military-grade weapons in Chicago belong to the military, Chicago police, or a politically connected collector.

Hey Supt. McCarthy, let me know when you're going to break the news to the SWAT boys that you're taking their auto toys away because a military-grade weapon on the streets of Chicago is simply unacceptable.

    7. Agammamon   12 years ago

Wait, that's impossible, Chicago has a strict gun control regime.

You must mean there were 13 shot last night in a mass shooting in *Somerton, AZ* where guns are effectively unrestricted.

  6. Archduke of Pantsfan   12 years ago

NHL rule change: Brett Gallant, Krys Barch find hilarious loophole before fight

The best thing about new rules is finding ways to break them. New Jersey Devils forward Krystofer Barch and New York Islanders forward Brett Gallant discovered a hilarious way to get around the NHL's rule on removing helmets before a fight.

As it currently stands, the league will give any player who removes his helmet before a fight an extra two-minute minor for unsportsmanlike conduct. This led many to speculate that two willing combatants would mutually agree to remove their helmets so each player would be assessed the same amount of penalty minutes.

Instead of doing that, Barch and Gallant got creative...

    1. Fist of Etiquette   12 years ago

This may actually turn me against fighting in the NHL.

    2. Ted S.   12 years ago

So what exactly did they do, for those of us who don't want to waste time on the video?

(I'm not angry at you, but at the writer. At least he used embedded video and not a gif-substituting for video.)

      1. rts   12 years ago

Each guy removed the other's helmet before the fight.

    3. Generic Stranger   12 years ago

...why would you take your helmet off for a fight in the first place? Make the other fucker try to punch you through the face guard. It's hilarious.

The iPhone 5s hits the stores today, and you're already waiting in line, have waited in line, or will not be waiting in line under any circumstances.

It's never too soon to give the NSA your fingerprints.

    1. playa manhattan   12 years ago

Eh, they've had mine for years. Probably since I was a kid.

    2. PapayaSF   12 years ago

You do know it does not work that way, I hope. The fingerprint reader scans the layers underneath your actual fingerprint, and stores that as a hash that is impossible to use to recreate your actual fingerprint. And that hash is stored in encrypted form in the CPU of the phone, and doesn't leave it.

      1. Thane can punch all your buns   12 years ago

I'm pretty sure it's not stored in the CPU.

        1. PapayaSF   12 years ago

          No, it is:

During its Touch ID presentation, Apple was quick to specify that all fingerprint information is encrypted and stored "in the Secure Enclave inside the A7 chip on the iPhone 5s" rather than being stored on Apple servers or backed up to iCloud.

          1. Thane can punch all your buns   12 years ago

            The A7 is an SoC

            1. PapayaSF   12 years ago

Yeah, but it's still the CPU of the phone. I don't think it's wrong to call the main chip "the CPU" even though there are other functions on it.

              1. Thane can punch all your buns   12 years ago

It is wrong. An SoC contains the CPU.

                1. playa manhattan   12 years ago

                  Fight! Fight! Fight!

                2. PapayaSF   12 years ago

I know that, and that's what I am saying. A system-on-a-chip contains a CPU, so it's a bit loose but not really wrong IMO. Both SoCs and CPUs are "processors," so what's wrong with calling the "main processor" the "central processing unit"?

It's actually more accurate than calling a DSL box a "modem," which everyone does.

                  1. Thane can punch all your buns   12 years ago

There are several problems, one of which is that SoCs typically (and in this case) also contain the GPU.

          2. Entropy Void   12 years ago

            "Secure Enclave"

            Fuck You, Jobs.

      2. T   12 years ago

And that hash is stored in encrypted form in the CPU of the phone, and doesn't leave it.

Unless the NSA uses the back doors manufacturers obligingly provide them and come looking for it.

        1. CE   12 years ago

His point was that a CPU is not a memory device.

          1. PapayaSF   12 years ago

They aren't usually, but the A7 is a new custom CPU.

            1. PapayaSF   12 years ago

Or: "a custom SoC that contains a CPU." WHAT. EVER.

      3. CE   12 years ago

...and stores that as a hash that is impossible to use to recreate your actual fingerprint...

Because the NSA would never hack the fingerprint-to-hash algorithm, and figure out how to run the process backward to get your fingerprint?

        1. PapayaSF   12 years ago

I am not an expert, but AFAIK it's quite possible to use an image to generate a unique number that cannot be used on its own to recreate the original image.

      4. Marc F Cheney   12 years ago

        That all sounds nice.

If it actually works that way.

Which I have little reason to believe.

And I have every reason to believe that even if it works that way, the NSA is already busy figuring out whether and how they can recover the fingerprint.

Yeah, I'm paranoid, but only because I learned I wasn't paranoid enough.

    3. CE   12 years ago

Facebook already gave them your hi-res photo for facial recognition and your biography and list of known acquaintances, and enough information on what you like for the NSA to form a personality profile.

George R. R. Martin thinks Breaking Bad is the best show on television and declares Walter White is a bigger monster than anyone in Westeros

Martin finally put fingers to keys and began to tap out what we've all been longing to read: a blog about how awesome Breaking Bad is, particularly how "there's no way in hell" Martin's own Game Of Thrones?or any other show for that matter?stands a chance at defeating it at the Emmys next year. Also, as Martin writes in the thing that you definitely wanted most to read from him, "Ozymandias" led him to conclude, "Walter White is a bigger monster than anyone in Westeros. I need to do something about that."
Of course, this is obviously a question open to furious debate: Walter White a bigger monster than Joffrey? Than Ramsay Snow? Than Sir Monsterface of Monsterly Rock, The One With The Monsters? George R.R. Martin doing something? No doubt arguments will rage on, until Martin at last completes his next epic work on how Brooklyn Nine-Nine was pretty good.

So will his final book feature a drug dealing Maester?

    1. Winston   12 years ago

Everyone in Westeros is going to spend the last two books killing each other of, leaving Tyrion on the throne of Westeros as the last man standing, just in time to die in battle when Danny's army finally makes it to Westeros, putting her family back in charge.

I'm basing my prediction on the series being loosely based on The War of the Roses and Tyrion being Richard, Duke of Gloustcher. If that's the case, Danny's going to end up marrying one of the last remaining Starks and unifying the kingdom and kicking off a period of relative sanity.

Canadian family uses helicopter to spring brother from prison

California mothers creates outcry for lifting weights while 8 months pregnant

A California mom sparked an online firestorm when a picture of the bodybuilder lifting weights at 8 months pregnant were posted on Facebook.
Lea-Anne Ellison, 35, was just two weeks shy of her due date when a photo of her posing with a barbell over her head was posted to a group page on the social media site on Sunday.
"8 months pregnant with baby number 3 and CrossFit has been my sanity," Ellison wrote in the caption. "I have been CrossFitting for 2 1/2 years and...strongly believe that pregnancy is not an illness, but a time to relish in your body's capabilities to kick ass."
But a slew of commenters posted angry greivances on the picture ? which boasted more than 16,000 likes and almost 3,000 shares by Friday morning.
"This is actually sickening, I hope pregnant around the world do not do this kind of crap," one woman wrote. "I am a crossfit enthusiast but I DO NOT recommend this at all."
The person continued by claiming the image gives "people the wrong message that this is OKAY when it's not!!!!"

She can do what she likes, but is Crossfit some kind of fitness cult?

    1. John   12 years ago

Yes it totally is a cult. It is not the only way to get in shape or really even the best way. But to its followers it is the path not just to fitness but salvation.

      1. Ted S.   12 years ago

The point of the story of course isn't to make fun of Crossfit, but the "OMG She's doing strenuous workouts while pregnant! She's going to kill the baby inside!" nonsense.

    2. playa manhattan   12 years ago

It's not dangerous to the baby, but it is to her. Towards the end of pregnancy, the woman's body secretes enzymes that soften ligament tissues to prepare the baby's head and body for compression during vaginal birth. The enzymes also affect the mother, and it can be very easy to tear or dislocate joints in the 3rd trimester...

    5. DesigNate   12 years ago

Obama is waging a war on cool and it's a great idea!

The truth, however, is that a war on coal is a good idea.

Here's an analogy. I live down the block from Le Diplomate, a popular newish restaurant in D.C. This restaurant, in the course of doing its business, generates a lot of trash. And by district law, like other commercial establishments it needs to pay a garbage company to haul that trash away. It would, of course, be cheaper for them to just leave the trash in the alley rather than paying for cleanup. But this wouldn't be a real efficiency gain of any kind. It's just that the cost of trash disposal would be shifted off the shoulders of Le Diplomate's owner (who conveniently lives in Philadelphia) and onto the shoulders of those of us who live on the block.

That's the basic business model of coal-fired power plants?huge costs are borne by people who use the air rather than by the people who burn the coal.

The "war on coal" consists of beginning to ask coal-burners to actually bear the costs of burning coal. A restaurant that's only going to be profitable if it's allowed to dump garbage in the alley rather than haul it away ought to be shut down.

So there's no difference between a restaurant in DC and a source of fuel that provides power to millions of people.

    1. John   12 years ago

Nasty little retard. God I hate that guy.

Marcotte spews more rotten brain pus:

It's been really funny, if also deeply disturbing, to see conservatives desperately cast around for any opportunity they can find to derail Obamacare as October 1st, the day the health care exchanges start, comes nearer. It's becoming increasingly clear that Republicans realize that once people start to use the exchanges, they are going to be enthusiastic about it, and so they're trying to keep as many people as possible from getting to the exchanges to begin with. That's because, at this point, Republicans aren't even trying to hide the fact that they straight up don't think that certain people deserve health insurance.

    1. Marc F Cheney   12 years ago

  36. The Rt. Hon. Serious Man, Visc   12 years ago

    Willie Nelson likes farmers.

There are good folks in Congress who are fighting for a family farm food system that benefits family farmers and all Americans. But they're blocked by a majority that lets corporate power, partisan politics and big money get in the way of progress. Their votes have reinforced a dominant, chemical-dependent food system that is harmful to our environment, our health and local economies, while cutting billions from nutrition and food programs for people who need food.

In recent years the Good Food Movement has forged ahead, including some progress made in the last farm bill. This movement has created more opportunities to support and promote family farm agriculture. But without meaningful action now on farm policy, those gains and more will be lost. Without better farm policies, family farmers will not have the chance to compete in a fair marketplace and earn a living. Conservation programs, so crucial in a changing climate, will be compromised. New and beginning farmers will lose access to the credit, resources and land they need to start their farm businesses. Programs for underserved farmers will disappear. Innovations happening right now on the farm to grow renewable energy will be lost. And industrial ag stands to win if efforts to reform wasteful farm subsidy programs are ignored.

Sounds like he wants subsidies for the right people.

    1. PD Scott   12 years ago

Wasn't that what Farm Aid was really all about?

      1. Ted S.   12 years ago

How much did the Mellencamps get?

    2. mad libertarian guy   12 years ago

I'm not exactly sure what is so hard to understand that family farms feeding America is not progress.

It's very simple. We cannot feed 300m+ people with 40 acre farms that produce 25% less food per acre than conventional farming methods. And that doesn't even account for GM crops which further enhance efficiency AND aids in environmental concerns by having to use far less herbicides, pesticides, fungicides, and water.

      1. SForza   12 years ago

        Um, yes we can.

We have 4 acres that were considered unfarmable when we bought it-- hilly, clay soil, etc. Without any herbicides, pesticides, or fungicides, we can produce enough food on our farm to feed 4 people/acre.

There are over 400 million acres of cropland in the U.S., most of it more desirable farmland than ours. Farm it the way we farm ours, and it should produce enough food to feed 1.6 billion people. So we absolutely can feed 300m+ people with family farms.

Not saying we should, just that we can. While I'm not interested in growing GM crops, I don't think anyone should be prevented from doing so, as long as they aren't hurting anyone else.

        1. kbolino   12 years ago

If it can be done effectively, then it doesn't require government subsidies.

          1. SForza   12 years ago

I agree completely. The only policy change I want to see is the end of agricultural subsidies, which overwhelmingly benefit large agribusiness rather than family farms, but would be bad policy regardless of who they benefit.

I'm just tired of hearing the "we can't feed 7 billion people" argument. We absolutely can feed everyone with small family farms. That doesn't mean government should subsidize them or ban alternative approaches.

  37. Agammamon   12 years ago

"A report that just came out declaring that Americans are throwing away tons of perfectly good food"

While I consider this to be a perfectly legitimate complaint, what these morons seem to not understand is we throw out a tiny percentage of food compared to other countries. We just throw it out at the *end* of the supply chain (at the consumer) rather than something like 50% of the food spoiling while *enroute* to the consumer like it does in less technologically advance countries.

We are in a position to 'have' to throw this small percentage out because of the wealth we have due to the advance supply chain technology we wield. The whole "you throw too much food away' thing will simply be solved in time by technological advance without any need for government intervention - simply following the graph slope will tell you that.

    1. PD Scott   12 years ago

The FEC does not Stand With Rand PAC

In a letter to the Federal Election Commission, the independent political committee today cheekily dismissed regulators' assertion that it can't use the name of Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., in its title unless the candidate himself formally authorizes it.

"This Committee ... is unaware that the late Ayn Rand, noted philosopher and author and of Atlas Shrugged, is seeking election to federal office," Stand with Rand PAC wrote.

Striking a more serious tone, the committee also accused the FEC of "broad overreach." It argued that the agency "must allow the maximum of first amendment freedom of expression in political campaigns commensurate with Congress' regulatory authority."

Strangely, you can include a candidate's name if the PAC is opposed to that candidate. So Stand With Rand PAC is bad, but a hypothetical No to Rand Paul PAC would be okay.

I can't even tell what these idiots are bitching about anymore:

The best (read: worst) part comes at the end, though, when said EIC explains representations of sexual violence in video games are cool because they're "tasteful." What makes for a high-class rape? you may ask. Well, keep your clothes on, make sure your assailant can't get it up, and give some guy looking to prove his masculinity and influence the chance to save you. Otherwise you're basically just trash.I'm by no means categorically against representations of sexual violence in popular media. A cultural life that ignored the existence of domination would be false; recognition of the harms we do to each other makes for better art and creates a communal space to grapple with the violence and, ultimately, to resist. But consumers like the PlayStation Universe EIC aren't interested in real violence, its real repercussions, and its real causes. They want the palatable version. They want just enough violence to feel good about themselves, but never enough to require recognition of off-screen harm. They congratulate themselves for thinking about rape for a minute, and in doing so, absolve themselves of the responsibility to do anything about it.

So she wants more brutal rapes in video games?

    1. Winston   12 years ago

You are talking about the people who condemn the "rape culture" after having spent decades promoting it.

Not to mention these people found the fact that movies, TV and comic books were for decades forbidden from depicting rape awful but now they got what they want and they are shocked that it can be depicted tastelessly! Some want it banned (for some cases) again.

Free-market fundamentalist Rahm Emmanuel needs to be reigned in by 'privatization accountability' bill

The bill could serve as an example for cities around the country, and put a check on free market-minded politicians like Mayor Rahm Emanuel attempting to sell off as many public goods as possible...Emanuel seems to want the bill to stay buried, away from public debate, so the city's privatization deals can remain largely unscrutinized.

    ?

Introduced in November, 2012, and backed by a coalition of unions and community and good government organizations, the PTAO would require the city of Chicago to engage in a multistep process involving the public before it privatized any asset or service.

The city would be required to conduct an independent cost-benefit analysis study; demonstrate at least 10 percent cost savings and prove that the economic benefits of privatizing an asset or service would outweigh the benefits of keeping it public; hold at least one public hearing on the deal; deliver an annual report for each privatized deal on costs and the state of services; require at least 50 percent of subcontracted workers reside within Chicago; and attempt to work with workers' unions rather than steamrolling them.

Never thought I'd root for Rahm, but that's the Chicago public sector for ya.

I hope this is an appropriate place to talk about this. I have complicated feelings about the show Undercover Boss. On the one hand, I really enjoy it. It showcases some really hard working people, dealing with everyday problems and quickly dispels any idea that the working poor are lazy. At the end, they even get a prize! Yay! It sometimes makes me weepy.
        -
And then I get angry. The gratitude that is expected of these very, very hardworking people for what amounts to crumbs thrown off the table, is sickening. But we are supposed to be content, and think corporations are great, because look! They notice how hard they work! And if you are a very, very good worker, and never complain, and always do your job, just maybe someday your boss will notice you and send you on a week of paid vacation. A fucking week. And she cried because she hadn't had a week off in eight years. Eight fucking years! The system is broken- and these corporations and the 1% are the problem.

...AP show the U.S. and other governments pushed scientists preparing a new UN climate report due out next week to omit or downplay evidence that the earth's atmosphere has stopped warming for the past 15 years.

From the wire - "Germany called for the reference to the slowdown to be deleted, saying a time span of 10 to 15 years was misleading in the context of climate change, which is measured over decades and centuries. The U.S. also urged the authors to include the 'leading hypothesis' that the reduction in warming is linked to more heat being transferred to the deep ocean."...

A time span of 1.5 decades is misleading in the context of something measured over decades?

      1. Agammamon   12 years ago

A timespan of 1.5 decades is *short* in *science' that only has reliable, verifiable weather records from the last 30-45 years?

        1. Not an Economist   12 years ago

Well 1.5 decades isn't enough to prove a cooling trend but a rainstorm yesterday is proof the atmosphere is changing and it is all man's fault.

"A timespan of 1.5 decades is *short* in *science' that only has reliable, verifiable weather records from the last 30-45 years ~1988 to 1998?"

-Yes, but the records only go back to 1978 when the hall of records was mysteriously blown away.

Talking about twerking takes time away from talking about St. Treyvon.

The New York Times ran an opinion piece this weekend titled "Explaining Twerking to Your Parents." In it, writer Teddy Wayne chronicles the moment at which white people might have to explain twerking to their parents. The result is disastrous. Wayne's piece remains one of the most read and e-mailed well past the weekend on which it was published in the paper and posted online. It's offensive on the surface?but it's also harmful, in that it shifts attention away from the conversation that parents have with their black kids about racial profiling, vigilantism and death.

Following Trayvon Martin's killing by neighborhood watch vigilante George Zimmerman, mainstream news media began publishing articles about "the talk." While previously, the talk often meant a conversation about sex and adolescence, this talk is much more complicated. It's one in which parents explain to their black children that they will be racially profiled; one that's had in order to sometimes save black lives. As part of a national conversation about race, major newspapers, including The New York Times, wrote about the talk. Many white writers expressed that it was hard to imagine even having to explain to a child that their skin color automatically makes them suspect, and as such, a candidate for early death.

What's even more awkward to explain is that black adolescents are statistically far more likely to cause someone else's early death than members of any other race.

Ahh... but apparently, black parents are predisposed to understanding stripping down to your last shreds of dignity, and grinding your ass on the crotch of anyone who might help you stay relevant, and get you paid " Twerking". There's one awkward issue settled.

Religious Freedom Agency Loses Attempt To Dismiss Former Employee's Discrimination Suit

In Ghori-Ahmad v. U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom, (D DC, Sept. 17, 2013), the DC federal district court refused to dismiss claims of religious and national origin discrimination, and of retaliation, bought by a former employee of the U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom. Ghori-Ahmad, a lawyer and expert on South Asian affairs, is a Muslim of Indian descent who in 2009 was originally offered a full-time job with USCIRF, but then had the offer rescinded and ended up with only a 90-day position that the agency refused to extend. Her lawsuit claims that her original offer was withdrawn, and her temporary position was not extended, because of anti-Muslim bias of two of the USCIRF commissioners. (See prior posting.) The court first rejected USCIRF's claim that as a matter of law Ghori-Ahmad was an independent contractor with the agency, not an employee covered by the anti-discrimination provisions of the Congressional Accountability Act when her position was not extended. It held that factual issues remain as to her status. The court also rejected USCIRF's claim that no materially adverse action had been taken against Ghori-Ahmad. The court, however, did dismiss plaintiff's detrimental reliance claim, refusing to exercise supplemental jurisdiction to hear it.

We didn't exactly believe your story, Miss O'Shaughnessy. We believed your 200 dollars. I mean, you paid us more than if you had been telling us the truth, and enough more to make it all right.
