Electronic cigarettes are alternatives to traditional smoking, writes Nick Gillespie, and they are growing in popularity partly because they more closely mimic conventional cigarettes while delivering a dose of nicotine.

Some e-cigarettes look like conventional cancer sticks and others look more like something from a bad Sylvester Stallone movie set in the near future. Questions of fashion aside, they are not just a safer way for smokers to get the nicotine they crave, they are apparently as safe as milk.

They are also subject to an ever-growing list of bans, curtailments, and other attempts to regulate them out of the marketplace because…because…because they look like smoking
