Brickbat: Cleveland Rocks

A jury has awarded David Ayers $13.2 million after finding two Cleveland, Ohio, police officers violated his civil rights. Ayers spent 13 years in prison for the murder of Dorothy Brown, but was freed after DNA testing showed that a pubic hair found in Brown's mouth was not his. Ayers' attorneys argued the detectives made up a confession by Ayers, coerced a friend of his into giving false testimony against him, and provided information to a prison informant so he could testify that Ayers admitted committing the crime.

Seriously, there ought to be a law: if a prisoner is found to be innocent of the crime for which he was imprisoned, with evidence of official misconduct leading to his conviction, the officials in question should in addition to having to serve hard time, also be penalized and charged as if every crime that happened to tge prisoner was their own. Beaten by guards or inmates? Charge the prosecutor with it. Raped in the shower? Charge the prosecutor with it.

IIRC, the ancient Israelites had a law that a false accuser would get the same sentence which the defendant could have gotten.

The next time a "Law amd Order" style show gets canceled, the remaining 4or 5 wrap-up episodes should be used to convey all the dirty, underhanded, and criminal things the "heroes" did to secure convictions in some percentage of their cases.

The ghost of the Constitution will preside, accompanied by Carol Cleveland.
