Kerry Doesn't Want to Damage US-Russian Relations over Edward Snowden; Putin Calls Criticisms "Ravings and Rubbish"
Snowden still reportedly in transit area at Moscow airport

In Saudi Arabia, Secretary of State John Kerry did his best to relay the message he doesn't want a Rocky IV world but does want Russia to ship Edward Snowden back to the U.S.
Secretary of State John Kerry says the United States is not looking for a confrontation with Russia, where admitted NSA leaker Edward Snowden is believed to be hiding.
Speaking at a news conference in Saudi Arabia, Kerry says it's true that the United States does not have an extradition treaty with Russia but called on Moscow to comply with common law practices between countries where fugitives are concerned.
In Finland, Russian President Vladimir Putin dismissed the idea of sending Snowden back to America.
President Vladimir Putin confirmed on Tuesday a former U.S. spy agency contractor sought by the United States was in the transit area of a Moscow airport but ruled out handing him over to Washington, dismissing U.S. criticisms as "ravings and rubbish".
In his first public comments since the fugitive flew in on Sunday, he appeared to make light of the affair around Edward Snowden, whose flight from U.S. authorities is becoming an increasing embarrassment for President Barack Obama. Asked by a journalist about the affair, he smiled fleetingly.
"I myself would prefer not to deal with these issues. It's like shearing a piglet: there's a lot of squealing, but there's little wool," he told a news conference in Finland.
Snowden was charged with espionage in a sealed criminal complaint last week. Hong Kong told the U.S. over the weekend the extradition request had insufficient detail and that Snowden had left the island. Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said today that has damaged U.S.-Chinese relations, while Snowden headed to Moscow. He missed a flight to Havana yesterday watched by the press, but remains in the airport's transit area according to the Russian foreign ministry.

Wherein libertarians learn to love authoritarian psychopath Vladimir Putin, because it pisses Obama off.
Wherein you finally admit that the administration has been completely hapless in foreign affairs from day one.
Inept, corrupt, and dishonest. What isn't there to like?
Am I the only person who prefers eptness, even in petty tyrants? It galls me to be dictated to by people who can't lie competently to normal people, much less other sociopaths.
Well, I don't want them to efficiently crush me. But I know what you mean.
Compared to what? No major wars started. No major terrorist attacks. Improved relations with most of the world. Perhaps you could explain what the administration should be doing differently in this specific case, as a start?
So improved that at least three countries (two of them major regional powers) have made a point of rubbing the Obama administration's nose in on this issue. Real diplomatic dynamo, that one.
So he's supposed to somehow get China and Russia to start not trying to gain a geopolitical edge over the US?
Should he start by discontinuing our surveillance program while they do not discontinue theirs?
You're the one who brought up "improved relations", not me. Perhaps you'd like to provide a concrete definition with measureable results, or should we take it as an article of faith?
I don't know that relations with China and Russia are much different than under the previous president, but the previous president made the US a joke on the world stage, not to mention viciously hated in some parts. Granted, things really only had one direction to go.
So no proof or concrete definition, then. Gotcha.
Perhaps you'd like to provide a concrete definition with measureable results,
Look who you're talking to here...
or should we take it as an article of faith?
Why yes, yes you should. Tony says so because some really smart dude on MSNBC said so, so it must be true. Besides all his fellow prog-tards assured themselves that the mere election of the well spoken black man would improve our relations with rest of world, so it must be so. Because they say so and believe it to be true, and in Derp-ville believing is all that's required to make something true.
Should he start by discontinuing our surveillance program while they do not discontinue theirs?
--------------
nice job missing the point. The Snowden affair has nothing to do with programs in either country, unless our wish is to emulate the Chinese and Russians with an internal secret police force that monitors citizens' every activity.
a very progrssive idea. You don't need that extra helping citizen!
"Should he start by discontinuing our surveillance program while they do not discontinue theirs?"
He could start by not trying to reduce our nuclear arsenal just to appease the no-nukes crowd and by not hamstringing our industries with needless regulatory burdens like the announcement he made today about electric utilities, which he plans to enforce via the EPA because he can't get a co-equal branch of the federal government (congress) to do what he wants. The guy is a piece of dog shit.
Look, we all know everyone hated Bush, so Obama's mere presence has improved foreign relations. By definition!
I mean, Germans went to see him speak a few days ago! That's huge.
Impressing the enlightened Germans may actually count against Obama in my book.
Don't forget the Pakistanis.
They love them some Obama ... while the drones are overhead.

"Don't forget the Pakistanis.

Not the Paki inn-keepers, they don't.
I mean, Germans went to see him speak a few days ago!
You know who else the Germans turned out in droves to hear speak...
Should he start by discontinuing our surveillance program while they do not discontinue theirs?
Actually that wouldn't be a bad place to start. We really shouldn't be emulating authoritarian dictatorial regimes in the first place. And frankly I could care less if the Chinese and the Russians continue spying on their citizens or not. I do care that my government spies on its.
maybe, just maybe, a truly free nation should not running such a broad a surveillance program on their own citizens.
A) Were I them, I'd have waited six months for the media coverage to die down, played rope-a-dope, made noises about people being able to exercise their conscience and gone after him later.
B)No major wars - just stumbling ineptly from conflict to conflict without even an overarching narrative to sustain them.
C)No major terrorist attacks - Ft. Hood shooting and Boston Marathon bombing aren't big enough for you?
Requiring a "narrative" is so Sunday news talking head speak. Foreign policy is messy, maybe the best option is to lurch from crisis to crisis while not inflaming a large one. Certainly preferable to the "narrative" approach we tried previously.
I guess no terrorist attack is better than some terrorist attacks, but I thought we were being comparative.

"Requiring a "narrative" is so Sunday news talking head speak."
Right up your alley, shithead.
I guess no terrorist attack is better than some terrorist attacks, but I thought we were being comparative.
You're the one who said "no". Though I guess it does depend on the definition of the weasel word "major" as to whether or not we've had one.
Nevertheless your assertion that our standing in the world has improved is laughable. Maybe some German Eurotrash types hate us slightly less, but the rest of the world, especially the middle east, still despise us. And seeing as how that's where most of the terrorists come from, you'll excuse me if I don't get all giddy over the prospect of not being despised by Eurotrash.
nothing defines "improved relations" quite like the clusterfuck that is this story and Obama's adventure last week.
What Obama should have done is instead of talking about the need for a discussion/debate on surveillance, actually lead one. He is, after all, the freaking president, not some back benching Senator with zero to his resume. He should repeat until it sinks in to all that Snowden is NOT the story; leading the nation with the world's foremost surveillance state is.

"No major wars started"
Now, THERE is damning with faint praise!
Way to go, shithead!
we won't mention the higher death toll (versus Bush) of US soldiers in Afghanistan.
Hey, it's still a MINOR war! And he didn't start it, he just kept it going for another 5 years and counting!
You're really reaching on this one.
Are the terrorists also going to win if we point out this administration's haplessness?
Will these colors run if we continue to fight for civil liberties?
I'm sure you've got a couple more Bush-era amorphisms in you!

"Wherein libertarians learn to love authoritarian psychopath Vladimir Putin, because it pisses Obama off."
Wherein shithead finds even more despicable ways of defending that lying sack of shit.
Wherein libertarians learn to love authoritarian psychopath Vladimir Putin, because it pisses Obama off.
And with a mighty swish, Tony adds another rune to his longsword +3, strawman bane.
From the James Bond school of Supervillain Monologues.
I thought the Fins were still only about drinking, moping, and killing Russians. What's Vlad doing there?
Begging them not to fight with Russia again? Because we all know Finland would kick their ass.
Putin is looking for an export market for Russia's vast supply of melancoly, and figures a cold, barren wasteland is as good a foreign market as any.
So, what happens to Russia if oil ever takes a dive in price?
Are you expecting people to stop driving?
Because oil has never ever ever dropped in price?
They then have lots of cheap oil to supply their needs?
Unfortunately Simo Hayha, "the White Death" is no longer with us.
Using a modified Mosin?Nagant in the Winter War, he has the highest recorded number of confirmed sniper kills ? 505 ? in any major war.
Holy shit. Did he just line up and shoot straight down a 10 man rank? Because I'm pretty sure M-N would go through all 10 and kill the driver of the tank half a mile behind them.
"He preferred to use iron sights rather than telescopic sights"
woof. "White Death" is right.
he would also put snow in his mouth to cover up the warm exhales.
About a year ago, you could pick up a 91/30 around here for just $99.
He also survived having half his face literally blown off by a mortar shell and lived to be 96.
few phrases can match the feeling that comes with reading "Secretary of State John Kerry." Just projects strength and power, doesn't it?
"seared into my memory"
"Stuck on the sole of my shoe"
"Like shearing a piglet"
President Vladimir Putin [...] dismissing U.S. criticisms as "ravings and rubbish".
The same can be said for everything said by the US government.
I suppose that it would only be fair that if Russia turns over Snowden then we should turn over all the remaining cold war SU spies we took in.
