In protests of a scale rarely seen in Brazil, demonstrators expressed growing public frustration at poor government services amid heavy spending on preparations for the World Cup.

The unrest, which came after the opening matches of soccer's Confederations Cup over the weekend, has sparked security concerns just as Brazil prepares to host a series of major events, not only the international football tournament but a papal visit next month and the Rio Olympics in 2016.
