Sheriff Joe Arpaio will appeal a federal court ruling that his department racially profiled Hispanic drivers in an effort to crack down on illegal immigrants.

Joe needs to shop around for less brown judges, that's all.

Especially since the Phoenix New Times would probably go out of business at that point, as they wouldn't have anyone left to bitch about.

In all seriousness, Maricopa County's probably reached a point anyway where it might be better to split up into two separate entities for the east and west side, irrespective of who gets elected sheriff.

        1. theamishcountry   12 years ago

As a new resident of Phoenix (Laveen area), I'm curious about your reasoning here.

It's bullshit this cop is going to shoulder the full blame (possibly) when that whole department, supervisors on down, need to be hit for this.

      1. Auric Demonocles   12 years ago

They can't afford to give out that many medals because of the sequester.

      2. Jerryskids   12 years ago

No, the bullshit is that this cop is being railroaded for 'acting with gross negligence when he didn't prevent his gun from firing'. It was a fucking gun! How the hell are you supposed to prevent a gun from firing when it wants to? Guns are armed and dangerous, you can't expect cops to be constantly risking their lives attempting to prevent guns from firing.

It's easy enough to criticize after the fact when you have time to assess the situation, but when you have to make a split-second life-or-death decision in the heat of the moment I'd like to see how any of you would have prevented a gun from firing.

You don't know, man, you weren't there!

I mean you act like you're this bigshot genius, but you don't know that leftwing politics in rural areas dates back to the late 1800s, and it's always been a strong force. You're ignorant as shit.

I mean you act like you're this bigshot genius, but you don't know that leftwing politics in rural areas dates back to the late 1800s, and it's always been a strong force.

Rural politics is difficult for most pundits to nail down because they're intellectually cemented in urban perspectives. It's why you get masturbatory tracts wondering "what's the matter with Kansas" rather than honest analysis.

Rural cultures have always been fundamentally defensive in nature because it's very easy for deviant elements and social stresses to divide their communities. They really didn't start turning against populist labor movements until the 1920s and 30s when the actions of the Wobblies and other violent outside labor groups began threatening the stability of the institutions that kept the community functioning.

    2. Let Me Ride   12 years ago

I always wonder if any of these athletes-turned-politicians will have their Chronic Traumatic Encephelopathy flare up on them while they are in office. IRS Targets Medical Marijuana Businesses In Government's Ongoing War On Pot
    http://www.huffingtonpost.com/.....1369843305

According to the Treasury Department, Section 280E disallows "deductions incurred in the trade or business of trafficking in controlled substances." Individuals involved in the sale of controlled substances -- including marijuana -- may not deduct standard business expenses from their federal taxes. That means, unlike other small businesses, medical marijuana dispensaries can't write off the cost of rent, payroll, product or advertising. As a result, stores that might not even be profitable can end up being taxed out of business.

    1. Emmerson Biggins   12 years ago

what a bunch of horse crap. Income = Revenue - Expenses. I realize there are some gray areas. But they shouldn't be able to ignore this basic fact, regardless of how many thousands of pages of non-legislator-written laws they have some how been able to generate. Too bad they have their own parallel, and unaccountable court system.

      1. Emmerson Biggins   12 years ago

Clarification : even if they are enforcing an actual statue, the statue itself should be laughed out of court in about 5 seconds. Federal Government has the power to tax income. Not other stuff that obviously isn't income.

10 Obnoxious Things Hipsters Say About Music
    http://pigeonsandplanes.com/20...../s/172822/

Hipsters don't seem to take as much pleasure from the music itself as from asserting their superiority or alternative nature. Whether it be early adoption, wider knowledge, "better" taste, or just knowing someone in the band, the hipster will always find something smug or dismissive to say in any conversation about music. So if you catch yourself saying too many of these, watch out.

When I was in college 20 years ago, I referred to "alternative" music as "failure music": as soon as a singer/band became successful, the fans would bitch that the act sold out.

Yeah, this is the "staying in my garbage can and eating shit" phase. I used to be jealous when people found out about bands I liked. Now I am glad, because it means that the band is getting recognition, and that I now have something else to talk about with that person.

Lista told authorities he didn't know Disney World patrons weren't allowed to bring guns. He said he thought the security checkpoint at the entrance to the Florida theme park was only so that guards could check bags for bombs or explosives. Patrons do not walk through metal detectors nor are they subject to patdowns.

Disney World prohibits patrons from bringing weapons of any kind on its property.

I wonder if Disney will ban him for life.

College Students Sign 'Thank You' Card To IRS
    http://www.thecollegefix.com/post/13607/

"Yes ? I'll sign it ? because I think it's a fake scandal and it makes sense to prosecute the 501cs, or whatever it is," said one male student as he signed the card, which was essentially a poster board with the words "Thank You IRS!" in bright, block lettering.

"Oh sure!" said another male student as he added his signature. "I think this is pretty rad."

The card ? which also included an image of President Obama giving a thumbs up and some balloons, was fake ? although students who signed it did not realize it at the time. The card was created by Colorado conservative activist Caleb Bonham, a 2011 graduate of CU Fort Collins who was an active College Republican as an undergrad.

Massachusetts auditor finds more than 1,000 dead people on welfare
    http://www.boston.com/metrodes.....story.html

A state audit today found Massachusetts has handed out $18 million in "questionable public assistance benefits" over the past few years, including welfare to more than 1,160 people who were either dead or using a deceased person's Social Security number.

The report, which covered food stamps, cash, and other benefits to low-income families, estimated that recipients using a dead person's Social Security number alone received at least $2.4 million in between July 2010 and April 2012. It also flagged another $15 million in suspicious transactions from electronic benefit cards during the two-and-a-half-year period the auditor reviewed.

A neighborhood complained to a local bar about their patrons peeing in the streets so they (the bar) hired someone to walk around with a flashlight and tell people to stop that and move along. A friend of mine had the job for a while. He said it was almost exclusively women.

Im guessing men were willing to put up with the bar bathroom.

      1. Virginian   12 years ago

      2. Zakalwe   12 years ago

I desperately had to go one Mardi Gras in New Orleans, and there was no way to get into a place in time. So I cut down a side street off Bourbon, headed down two blocks, and found a shadowy alcove outside some door. I not so carefully looked around (we'd heard about an acquaintance getting his ass beat by the cops and thrown in the drunk tank the night before for public urination) and got to work.

About ten seconds in a flashlight came on behind me and I heard "zip it up, son." I turned around to meet the gimlet stare of your generic NOPD, white, pudgy, waiting for the Dukes of Hazzard remake to become famous.

        "Son, where are you from?"

        Houston, Texas, officer.

"If I was in Houston, Texas, how would you like it if I pissed on your doorstep?"

I guess I wouldn't like it very much, officer.

"Then why are you pissing on my city's doorstep?"

[five second pause] I guess I'm just an asshole, officer.

[five second pause] "Get the fuck out of here."

I've found disarming honestly a surprisingly fruitful strategy with the cops both before and since then. White privilege!!

Yep, I may have to dust off Arkham City this weekend. Some quality button mashing fun right there.

          1. Andrew S.   12 years ago

I've heard of high schoolers doing this kind of thing, but that's usually grabbing somebody, throwing them in the car, and then a minute later laughing about it.

Some would argue that Soen sounds too much like Tool. And while they have obviously been influenced by Maynard and crew, Soen is definitely its own band with its own trademarks. A project with former Opeth drummer Martin Lopez and the legendary bassist (perhaps the best in all of metal) Steve DiGiorgio (Death, Testament, Vintersorg, Sadus, and many more), Soen mixes a tribal element in with their metal. Progressive to the core, metal in its soul, Cognitive, Soen's debut album which has great range from highly technical passages in odd times to slow ballads. "Delenda" has a little bit of everything.

      1. Tejicano   12 years ago

Lots of people from rougher parts of the world realize that a handgun is generally no where nearly as effective a weapon as the movies make them out to be. People can often survive being shot multiple times with a handgun. So a guy from africa, east europe, or the middle east might just rush a single individual armed only with a handgun.

OTOH - FBI agents a much better trained to shoot for a quick kill than the average person. So there quite possibly was a lethal disparity of viewpoints here. Kid thinks he has a chance in jumping the agent while agent believes his being armed and trained will keep the kid in check.

  46. Coeus   12 years ago

    Tyler Perry hates black women.

The fact that Mammy, Jezebel, and Sapphire, along with their remixes (Bad) Baby Mama, Golddigger, Freak and Hood Bitch showed up in under 15 mins is surely a new world record.

    Got it. Stereotypes bad.

5.) Tyler Perry is dangerous. He has made Black women mistake hate for love. When his heavy-handedness is still not enough to chastise and discipline us for being independent, driven, and sex-positive, he will resort to straight up distortions of history, and assume that his working class audience will miss the sleight-of-hand. Case en point: that rape scene!

Because of course history is replete with poor Black women raping rich white men. Not.

And the fact that he would traffic in such an utter fiction ? a fiction that is the very basis for centuries of brutality against Black women on the grounds that they are by nature un-rapeable, a fiction that drove the creation of the culture of dissemblance and the politics of respectability ? makes his cultural production not merely bad but despicable.

So Tyler Perry hates black women because he uses stereotypes. And also because he doesn't.

    Now don't you feel enlightened?

The New Feminist Man, the project to build the perfect self-policing male has its first major success story.

I'm a stay-at-home dad to twin 4-year-old girls who are already smarter than me, and my wife is a brilliant doctor who kicks ass and saves lives every day. I grew up with big sisters and a mom whose authority was unbreachable. I celebrate every inroad that women make into business, technology, science, politics, comedy, you name it, and I get angry about "slut-shaming" or "stereotype threat" or whatever is the affront du jour. And yet, in the caveman recesses of my imagination, I objectify women in ways that make Hooters look like a breakout session at a NOW conference.

Fuck respect from others. If you do a good job and enjoy what you are doing, that is good enough.

                Absolutely.

Fuck them. I don't need them for my own self respect. I'm a stay-at-home dad because my wife and I decided that it was what is best for us. She speaks 5 languages and her job prospects are better than mine (I'd be willing to bet she's the only person in all of Central KY who speaks 5 languages fluently, and perhaps the whole state - if we wanted to move to a place like DC or NYC, she could likely bank the big cash, but we love country living too much). It was that simple for us, and I'm sure as fuck not going to work just to maintain some bullshit notion of manhood and actively put our family at a financial disadvantage for it.

But I have to admit that taking shit on a near daily basis grates on a person. It really can put one in a mood to actually tell those others to go fuck themselves.

The bullshit spewed is never a direct insult. It's almost always some sort of backhanded compliment. "Your boys are so cute. AND their polite too!"

Yes, bitch, my boys are polite. Because I fucking make sure that they are, not because they simply stumbled on it despite my efforts.

Maybe he should try having them about random men. It doesn't look like heterosexuality has worked out very well for him.

      I get angry about "slut-shaming"

Why is this even a feminist thing? Having an opinion on how many people someone (regardless of gender) should screw is wrong?

      1. sarcasmic   12 years ago

It might be the double-standard where the guy who sleeps around is a stud and the woman who does the same thing is a slut.

Personally I consider them both the be sluts, but I guess he went the other way.

        1. Auric Demonocles   12 years ago

So it's basically because they are projecting their own double standard?

      2. John   12 years ago

It is worse than that. In the feminists' view, women should be able to wear clothing that shows their bodies but men are not supposed to ever notice or look unless they magically know that the woman wants them to.

        1. SugarFree   12 years ago

An no man can have an opinion about a woman's sexual history or sexual choices.

          1. John   12 years ago

Women of course are free to shame men who have sex with women they don't love.

        2. sarcasmic   12 years ago

My wife likes to wear skin tight jeans and tank tops, then she wonders why guys skeeze on her. In her case it's because she's hot but has a low self esteem, not because she's a feminist.

          1. John   12 years ago

I don't understand why parents don't explain the ways of the world to their daughters. I see high school girls all of the time who innocently wear outfits that are way too old for them. I just want to pull them aside and tell them "you do realize that when you wear that skirt every straight man from age 12 to 90 is going to stair at your ass out of instinct?"

            1. RBS   12 years ago

Probably because there mother's are trying to live through the daughters, like the moms who shop at Forever 21 and the dads are like that pussy from the article.

              1. John   12 years ago

Yeah, women in their 30s have to dress sexy. Girls in their teens drip sexuality. It just flows from them. They don't need to dress sexy. They need to dress conservatively to tone down what they have.

            2. sarcasmic   12 years ago

              Case in point.

There was some random party game which presented hypotheticals and you had to guess how people would answer or something (details and name forgotten). Looking at some of the cards, some female friends of mine mentioned how some of them were really tough, and showed me one, and they were stunned when I said that one was obvious.

If you could be invisible, what would you do?

To prove me point, I surveyed a bunch of men (aged 25-40) and literally 9 out of 10 answered the thematically same answer.

And all the women seemed stunned by this answer.

This "guy" would answer the same way if honest, then feel bad about it.

              1. Scruffy Nerfherder   12 years ago

Let me guess, they all said they would use the power of invisibility to shoplift high dollar shoes.

                1. robc   12 years ago

Something like that, the women were all over the place. Men were consistent and obvious in their answer.

                  1. John   12 years ago

                    Robc,

It is funny how so many women just don't understand men. They think men are unemotional about sex. And that is not really true. Men get a lot of their self worth and self image from sex. A lot of women don't understand that. That is why a lot of marriages fail. The woman thinks having sex with her husband when she feels like it is enough. Meanwhile the man view sex and his wife's willingness to do a lot of it and in ways he likes as a reflection of his self worth and value as a husband. Eventually, if the guy is worth having, some women who does understand men comes alone, gives him what he wants and makes him feel valuable, and steals him. And the woman whom he leaves never understands why. She thinks it is all his fault because men are just pigs who want sex.

                    1. Auric Demonocles   12 years ago

My recent breakup was largely about this, and it took her a really long time to understand that "I don't want to have sex" feels the same as "I don't want you".

                    2. ant1sthenes   12 years ago

I'm pretty sure a lot of women are the same, bro. Like, if for some reason their husband isn't really into them (due to stress, illness, them getting fat/old, he's getting some on the side, etc.), they tend to take it as a personal insult. Which a lot of times it is, but still.

            4. Tejicano   12 years ago

This is the reason why I think all women should have to spend a month on some sort of female viagra just to know what the average, healthy male lives through.

Telling a man she doesn't want to have sex is bad enough. Doing it in a framework which prevents him from doing it with anybody else it pure torture.

In 3-D.

      This all sounds...pretty fun actually.

Yeah, having a vivid and rich fantasy life doesn't sound so bad.

    10. RBS   12 years ago

Holy shit, his fucking blog is called BETA DAD.

    11. Nikki says you caddie well   12 years ago

      Oh. Ma. God.

I did scour the SAA website for coping resources that might translate into good practices for the person who is pretty sure he's not a sex addict. I found one good tip there: The Three Second Rule is described as "a tool we use for dealing with visual stimulation or addictive fantasy." "As we go through life," the text explains, "we are not in control of what thoughts pop into our minds. However, we make a distinction between that experience and the practice of indulging in addictive fantasy." So, if a "triggering image or thought" lingers for more than three seconds, practitioners of this rule must "turn the behavior over to our Higher Power and ask for help as quickly as we can." ...I needed a face for my Higher Power, which for me is the nebulous ideal of gender equity. So I chose the image of my intro to women's studies professor from college.

      Ha! Ha! Barf!

Next I decided to consult Christian literature, which proved especially abundant if I added "lust" as a search term. ...but when it came to dealing with the fundamental problems ("sin" and "lust") the answer was always "Jesus" which was not very helpful to me. But there was one excellent piece of advice I found hiding among the prayers: When you catch yourself objectifying women, think about your daughters, sisters, and mothers.

And he didn't realize he was just supposed to sub in his college prof for Jesus?!?

      1. Coeus   12 years ago

When you catch yourself objectifying women, think about your daughters, sisters, and mothers.

He's on to something. Nothing kills a sexual fantasy dead faster than the scowling face of a women's studies professor.

I eagerly await the article he writes after he embraces Skoptsy.

    12. AuH20   12 years ago

What a fucking pussy. Seriously, one of his male friends needs to call him up and go, "Buddy, I just read your article in Slate. Knock it the fuck off."

But now I'm also pissed because some douchenozzle in the comments had to bring up how this guy must like pegging. Seriously, I swear to fucking god, one of these days I am violating the NAP and putting my fist in someone's face over that shit. Its a fucking retarded view of masculinity that how you like to have sex determines your maleness or lack thereof.

      1. Brett L   12 years ago

I mean, if you're into that, we're cool with it as long as everyone is able to consent and does so.

    13. Gbob   12 years ago

The nice thing about "Uncle Tims" is that they are harmless creatures, more to be pitied then worried about. Even the most strident feminist see them for what they are.

What concerns me is that the feminists have produced a factory for creating them in our school system. My son is twelve and has never been in a fight. Talking with him, he doesn't even know any kid who has been in a fight. He's a good, smart, strong kid, but if your character isn't tempered in school then when will it be?

During the final weeks of the campaign Salvi loaned himself over a million dollars to buy ads in the Chicago media market. This in turn prompted the Democrat party's campaign arms to file complaints with the FEC and in kind the FEC, specifically Lois Lerner, filed charges against Al Salvi.

That is when Mr. Salvi contends Lois Lerner made him the following offer, "Promise me you will never run for office again, and we'll drop this case."

Al Salvi refused that offer and would fight the FEC complaint against him for several more years before a Judge tossed out the complaint.

Haven't checked the link, but I assume the "victim" in this case is a male.

      1. Auric Demonocles   12 years ago

        I stand corrected.

          Astonishing, isn't it?

She lived in a house in Allentown, Pa. Ms. Geissler referred to other prostitutes that worked for the Georges as her "wife in-laws." She said they would drive into Manhattan together and pass out cards offering massages, a cover for prostitution. But they also went skiing in Vermont and took vacations together to Florida.

She testified that she was in love with Vincent George Jr., 35. She also said that Mr. George, after his arrest, proposed marriage to her, another woman who testified, Heather Keith, and two other women. Ms. Geissler said that she and the other women all accepted, and that Mr. George suggested they move to Africa so they could legally marry.

That noise you hear is a million nice guys giving up on life.

True story. I have a friend who spent a year in Korea. He had a legal clerk who was a very nice but naive guy. The guy fell in love with a Ukrainian prostitute over there. He saves his pennies for six months and buys her out of her contract at the brothel with the intention of marrying her. She immediately dumped him and signed a new contract at the brothel.

Never try to make a ho a housewife.

Most of the pros over in Korea that I'm familiar with actually marry the military guy and then dump him and take half his shit when they get state-side.

E-4 on midwatch July 6 talking to me:

"and LT, I don't think the kid is mine, but I'm going to do the right thing and raise it as my own."

E-6 on midwatch July 8 talking to me:

"and LT, you know what, I don't care about her selling my car and furniture to buy drugs, if she asked me, I'd take her back."

(I injured my jaw dropping it when I heard that one).

Tarran are you a nuke? And if so, what ship?

  69. John   12 years ago

I am. My wife is from Boston and one of her best friends is from Pittsburgh and a die hard Pens fan. We are going to try to get together with her and her husband for at least one game. The two husbands are both Caps fans and will be rooting for injuries and good fights.

Detroit surprised me this series, I figured Chicago would take them to the woodshed but they took them to the limit.

These finals are probably the best outcome as far as matchups go. I'd have preferred to see SJ instead of LA, but I think we're in for two long and brutal series.

And I'm skunking the Hawks; my bandwagon picks always seem to crash out. This season is just a never ending cascade of disappointment. On that note I fully expect the Devils to pick Tie Domi's kid at the draft.

  71. Auric Demonocles   12 years ago

Of course. If I could have found 2 seats together I'd be going to the ECF, despite the $200 a seat price.

  72. Gbob   12 years ago

Hell, yeah. That Chicago/Detroit series was nuts. The crazy ending couldn't have been scripted any better.

Not a fan of the Pens or the Kings, so I even have people to root against.

  73. John   12 years ago

I don't know hockey well enough to judge. But I always like Torterella in his interviews.

I'm rooting for the arena to collapse in the Pens-Bruins series. I'll be rooting for whoever wins the west to win the Cup.

  75. Raston Bot   12 years ago

I'm rooting for rink-wide dysentery. I will settle for giardia.

  76. John   12 years ago

The arena collapsing is a good one, although I doubt my friend's husband's happiness would last very long as he had to deal with his inconsolable wife over the death of little Sidney Crosby.

Maybe they should invite the Fairbanks bear to the game.
