When Keandre Varner found his principal's mug shot online, he posted it to Instagram, along with his opinion that she had been arrested for DUI. In fact, Jamille Miller-Brown, principal of Georgia's Riverdale High School, had been arrested for missing a court appearance on a speeding ticket. Miller-Brown summoned Varner to her office where she tried unsuccessfully to have a police officer arrest him Failing that, she suspended Varner for four days. That was later reduced to two days.

You're still here, aren't you? What could she have suspended him for? Well, school administrators declared that Varner has been suspended for disseminating the picture to many people and for behaving in a belligerent manner when on the principal's carpet.

Here's a twist: Varner's mom, Nakesha Thomas, told WSB-TV that Miller Brown had sent her a letter stating that he had been suspended for "spreading misinformation."

She's an idiot for trying to have him arrested, or for suspending a student for not showing due deference to authoritah. The principle does have a valid complaint for defamation or libel but is apparently too ignorant to put it in those terms.

Good on the cop for declining to arrest the kid. And yes, it's depressing that this even has to be acknowledged. I'd still love to know exactly how dismissive and rude he was to the principal

A more subtle kudos to the cop, while he declined to arrest the kid for not respecting authoritah or whatever, he apparently didn't tell her that the kid was liable for libel.

They'd have to prove he knew it wasn't DUI.

I bet the kid found the mug shot in connection with a traffic court case and jumped to the conclusion that it must have been DUI.

Even the most negative interpretation of cops has to acknowledge that cops don't arrest people for libel, since libel isn't a *crime* - its a tort.

And the principal doesn't have much of a case - hyperbole and general dickishness are very well protected in American libel law. In addition the principal would have to show that she actually suffered damages beyond (even a small amount) getting pissed off.

Simple embarrassment isn't enough.
