Stay out of it, Karl. They want to remain sympathetic victims.

Drunke left at ER with sticky note on his head.
Fucking URL ends before the important part. 😐
And if the drinking age weren't 21, perhaps the friends would have stayed with him at the ER.
Safe haven laws don't apply. You're only a child at that age if you want to drink or stay on your parents insurance.
I hope they learned their lesson. Maybe next time they'll not take their friend to the ER when he/she is suffering from alcohol poisoning.

Police say criminal charges could be filed against the friends who left the student.
Incentives, how do they work?
They know how they work. Their incentives
(bigger police state) are just not regular people's incentives.
Colorado prosecutors have identified up to 3000 potential witnesses in the case against accused Aurora shooter James Holmes, who faces the death penalty.
Leave it to prosecutors to make this crazy fuck sympathetic.
That is one big theater.
So does this mean we can skip the trial and go straight to the hangin'?
According to internet newspaper comments, we should also thoroughly torture him beforehand.
Auric - never been to a Mega-Omniplex before?
That doesn't sound like a real thing.
It isn't 🙁
Aleph null-plex.
The season starts soon!
It actually is pretty huge--it's a 16-screen multiplex--but 3,000 seems a little excessive. It was a midnight showing, not something that happened in the middle of the day, and usually those auditoriums don't hold more than 4-500 people.
Yeah, I wouldn't think the other screens really matter.
Maybe if they're including every single person in the theater at the time of the shooting plus everyone in line outside for later showings of Batman and character witnesses from his college, sure, It could be 3000.
Parenting, how does it work?
Seriously, this sounds like a great opportunity to teach your kids why they can't believe what they see on TV ads.
If she's too incompetent to overcome McDonalds commercials, the commercials aren't the problem.
This. "No" is a word, and one that isn't put to use nearly enough. I use it all the fucking time with my chilluns. They don't like it, but then again, I don't give a shit.
Someone needs to get CPS on that case. Apparently the woman is not fit to be a mother.

"Yo, kids, you best be munchin on some carrots and broccoli and shit, yo, or your moms be trippin. Word is light."
"worked on federal farm policy to expand access to healthy food in low-income communities."
Because it's impossible to, like, teach yourself, your family, and your neighbors about food without a government.
In an alternate universe, this same woman is bitching about the lack of African-American representation in McDonald's commercials.
I'm not havin' it

I have noticed that almost every McD's commercial I've seen over the last 12 months have non-white people as the actors. Of course non of them are children though. I don't watch a lot of commercials thanks to the DVR, so maybe my observation is off.
I don't care either way. Clearly McDonalds feels they are trying to target certain consumers, doesn't bother me. Just my observation.
I've noticed this for years. That said, if McDonalds decided to market to white people only, these same people would be outraged at the exclusion of minorities from McDonalds' business strategy. So fuck 'em.
Those same people WERE outraged at the lack of minorities in McDs commercials, just like they were outraged that crack and crackheads were in the 'hood.
And they got what they wanted--more black--oops-- 'minority' McDs commercials and stricter sentencing for crack.
And now they're complaining about that.
Children of color are already more likely to ...
Causation, how does it work?
McDonald's global advertising budget for 2010 was $2.3 billion. Moms simply cannot compete with a marketing budget of this size.
What the fuck does this mean? Are you communicating with or teaching your children only through ads?
Yep - in all actuality - to allow McDonald's commercials to compete with any parent's message COSTS money.
OTOH - Not allowing McDonald's commercials to compete with any parent's message costs nothing. Nada - zip - zero - no sum - etc - etc - etc.
It's easy - just don't buy a TV.

The scientific journal PlosOne has published a study which suggests exposure to too many cute puppies can make you indifferent to human babies.

The dingo ate my baby!
Anyone whose says all babies are cute is a liar or a woman.
This.
Not all babies are cute. In fact, some of them are fucking ugly.
That may be the reason why you don't keep your baby pics around.
Keep them around what?
Without reading the article I am going to postulate that people who dont like people gravitate to animals.
I hate people
Love me some April Ludgate!
Not all puppies. Some of those are ugly as sin, they just don't make it to imgur albums or pinterest.
If anything is making me indifferent to human babies, its the fact I'm in my late 20s and many of my friends endlessly spam our facebooks with "he/she's growing up soooo fast! derp!." I worry about the advanced species of narcissistic humans my future kids will be growing up with.

CBO estimates 2013 deficit at $642 billion
http://news.yahoo.com/cbo-esti.....37489.html
So Obama has cut the deficit in half as promised - but a year late.
http://www.politifact.com/trut.....istration/
We've seen underestimates before. Two years running, in fact.
Considering all he had to do to do so would be not continue the 'one time spending' of the stimulus, even returning to the level of Bush's deficit wouldn't be impressive.
Not true. The CBO's numbers for 2009 were compiled while Bush was still POTUS and the stimulus was supplemental spending.
2009 was Obama, unless you mean FY 2009, in which case it was Obama anyway because he's the one who signed it.
On Jan. 7, 2009, two weeks before Obama took office, the Congressional Budget Office reported that the deficit for fiscal year 2009 was projected to be $1.2 trillion.
Read the link.
March 11, 2009, Obama signs final spending bills. I really don't give a shit about projections when we have the actual results.
lol - if projections were real, the UE rate should be down around 6.5%, the economy should be growing at close to 2.5%, and Manhattan would be under water thanks to global warming.
Keep gobblin' that Obama cock, shreeky.
Oh don't you worry about that.
"So Obama has cut the deficit in half as promised - but a year late."
I could cut 600 billion more tomorrow. You, Obama, and Bush can fuck off.
Jack Lew has only been in a few months, and he's already playing games and fudging the numbers even more than Geithner ever did. The debt hasn't increased at all in almost two full months now? Yeah right, what a bunch of complete and total bullcrap!
And when Geithner fudged the numbers, for the most part he did it when we were running up tight against the debt ceiling. What's deeply concerning about the games Lew is playing is that the debt ceiling isn't technically even in effect right now.
FY13 deficit so far-- $646 billion.
http://www.treasurydirect.gov/.....dYear=2013
Once again, shriek gets fucked by the government's own data.
So basically Lew has to fudge the numbers for four and a half more months. Don't put it past the guy!
The deficit will definitely be lower than last year--the increase in Social Security taxes and sequester will see to that. It certainly won't be because more people are working than last year.
Wrong link. That one goes to Treasuries sold - not the deficit.
The annual deficit is what grows the debt, you moron--what do you think the government finances its shortages with, leprechaun gold?
Look up a concept called "double entry accounting" - you primitive idiot. You are ignoring receipts. Treasuries are only one component of the picture.
You are ignoring receipts. Treasuries are only one component of the picture.
The debt takes the receipts into account, you slack-jawed douchebag. The debt accumulation is what results from the deficit that occurs when tax revenues don't cover spending obligations.
You're just pissed because I cornholed you once again with the government's own data and showed you to be helpless in the face of 5th grade math.
You do realize that you've merely 'defeated' a guy who is the Internet equivalent of the homeless guy who reeks of piss and is screaming at the wall, right?
If we didn't beat homeless people, we'd have to turn in our top hats and monocles.
Need to earn that libertarian street cred somehow...
Here's one example that shows you don't know what the fuck you're talking about:
10/09/2012 16,167,932,295,919.57
10/10/2012 16,157,753,419,211.18
Huh, look at that--the total debt dropped $10 billion in one day. Wonder where that could have come from? Surely not tax receipts--it must have been from elves and unicorns!
Except for the fact that Obama was opposed to the spending cuts and wanted to spend way more money.
The deficit got cut because people refused to listen to him after the stimulus debacle.
How does Obama get credit for this when his FY2013 budget proposal had the deficit at ~$900B? He doesn't get to take credit for things that might happen despite his opposition.
See Clinton & Welfare Reform
An Army official charged with preventing sexual assault may be charged with sexual assault.
He had an army of one in his pants.

Why didn't the Army sue Boston over that little infringement?
I hope he puts a helmet on that soldier before he sends it into battle.
NBC gear. You don't know what else has been in that cave.
If Obama needs a Drudge, does the left need a Reason? Maybe call it Emotion?
iow Conservatives work on principles and reason, liberals work on personality and emotion.
I don't know that the conclusion about conservatives is terribly accurate. They just don't happen to have a personality to gather around at this point. They are cerainly capable of it, as frequent invocations of Reagan remind us. And except for the more libertarian side of conservatism, I don't see a whole lot of principles reasoning on social or national greatness type stuff.
They are still and always will be gathered around Reagan.
Is that why only 6% of scientists self-identify as Republican while the rest are I or D?
Conservatives are much more likely to believe fairy tales.
Define 'scientist'.
Someone who turns government money into panicky reports.
I've known and worked with some scientists in my time, and I didn't notice any particular left-leaning. Plenty of them depend on government money, so I'm sure they aren't all libertarians, but this sounds like nonsense.
Pretty much any time the poll is 90% or higher of anything, it's usually completely false.
Exception: African-American votes for Democrats.
To the study though, only 55% identify as Democrat & according so ScienceMag (here):
"As this year's Science Careers postdoc survey indicated, 61 percent of former postdocs polled and 57 percent of current postdocs hoped to get tenure-track academic positions after completing their postdoctoral studies, and an additional 15 percent of former and 16 percent of current postdocs planned on seeking non-tenure-track research scientist positions."
Putting about 75% of scientists working in academia either teaching or research.
With that - the 55% identifying as Democrats seems low too...
Define 'scientist'.
A political activist that wants to take credit for advances actually developed by engineers, entrepreneurs and lay inventors.
Or they just don't want to get shit from the intolerant D's, so they call themselves I's.
Do the scientists include those who were caught fabricating data to support Global Warming? How do scientists feel about redistribution of wealth? I'll bet most favor it.
And why would any intelligent person care whether a group identifies as a D or an R when both groups are essentially the same statist douche bags and the worst policies of government are get bi-partisan support?
And why aren't you and these scientists smart enough to understand that?
Buttplug you are full of it, as usual. I am a PhD Chemist who has worked in industry and academia for 30+ years. I know hundreds of scientists and engineers well. By my estimates, about 2/3 of scientists and engineers are conservative and only 1/4 are Dems. Just because some scientists chase govt grants doesn't make them liberals. As Willie sutton observed, he robbed banks because that's where the money is. Same with the grant-driven scientists.
Given that well over 50% of the Neopagans I have known were either scientists, engineers, or teachers I would say that just because you have a high level of education and use reason an logic in one area does not in any way shape or form predispose you to using reason or logic in other areas.
This. It's amazing how someone can be a genius in one narrow field and an absolute retard in the rest of life.
Caveat: Republicans seem to be just as driven by emotion as Democrats. They just care about different things.
What happens when you include engineers in your count?
WHO GIVES A FUCK YOU USELESS CUNT?
"Obama and his inner circle treat politics more like a one-candidate personal cult with an insular system of centralized White House control"
Really? A man and his supporters who see centralization as the solution to everything treat politics similarly. Shocking.
Interestingly, about 20 percent of the regular trolls at H&R self-identify as buttplugs.
I LOLed.
It's also interesting that this particular troll comes here and treats the rest of us like conservatives even though he's the only one here who wants to have anything to do with Palin.
"Your witness, Mr. Buttplug."
"My name's not 'Buttplug'!"
"Yes, merely a suggestion..."
Obama and his inner circle treat politics more like a one-candidate personal cult
Small heads can only hold a few variables in active consciousness at one time...easier to distill everything in life down to a few simple tribal ideas: us=good. them=bad. ugh.
"his supporters who see centralization as the solution to everything "
This is the thing with typical lefties. They don't actually see themselves as supporting more and more centralized power. This is because they see power in a framework similar to a Marxist class group struggle. White people have power, rich people have power, businesses as a group have power. So even though basically every policy they support increases and centralizes more and more power into the hands of a few agency officials, they think this is defusing power because its "democracy" taking about from the previously mentioned groups. Liberals look at power as group struggles, not actual power in the hands of an individual lording over everyone else like what we mean what we say that.

Liberals don't seem to understand why Drudge has such outsized power, and Breitbart had such outsized power. It's because there are so many left-wing news organisations. The number of right wing news organizations is so small that any right wing reporter or editor has the ability to gain a ridiculously large following simply because there's a large niche in American culture that is not being filled. It's the same reason Fox News has such high ratings.
I am anything but right wing, but find myself preferring fox news, often because they actually pack their articles with more detailed facts.
I can filter out the (often hamfisted) editorializing. It speeds things up because I have to do less searching to find that nugget of detail (how many senators(?), what poll(?)) that is increasingly hard to find in most MSM articles.
Also see the conservative universities - Hillsdale and Bob Jones U.
It is bad when your philosophy has to be quarantined to survive.
Actually, I'd argue it's bad for liberals that despite all of their best efforts to keep conservatives out of universities and out of journalism, they've failed miserably and go-getter conservatives have carved out a niche for themselves anyway.
Liberals sure are incompetent, huh?
Well, that is testimony to our great market system. Bad ideas thrive sometimes despite being bad. People who believe in astrology easily outnumber Hayek readers.
Fortunately, people who misread Hayek as supporting central planning and a police state are still outnumbered by those who can comprehend what they read.
"Liberals sure are incompetent, huh?"
No, just fucking stupid. And petty. And intolerant. And loud. And supportive of a president who raids med pot distributors with more zeal than Bush. And ass-kissers for the president who thinks drone killings on American soil are okay.
Don't believe me? Ax them.
Ax them.

May 15, 2013: Writer Ron Elving has a sad that Barack Obama won't be able to create 'bipartisan consensus' because of multiple Obama Administration scandals.
When we attack Barack Obama over Barack Obama's scandals, we often forget that the real victim is Barack Obama.
NPR would be funny if the feds weren't taking my money to pay for it.
I never understood why a press outfit like NPR or PBS can get tax dollars but a religious institution can't.
If the Jefferson letters caused us to assume a "wall" between the state and religion(and religion and the press are both pillars of the 1st amendment), wouldn't the logical assumption be to extend that to the other subjects of the first amendment?
Perhaps its only because the word establishment only applies to religion in the text, but since the "seperation" clause is read into it for religion already, I don't see why a rigid interpretation is used when it comes to the press.
BTW not arguing that religious organizations should get tax subsidies, but that news outfits shouldn't.
Wow what bullshit. These fuckers genuinely believe that bipartisanship is shutting up and agreeing with them.
The idea that Obama, who rammed through his signature achievement without a single fucking Republican voting for it, is some kind of advocate of bipartisanship, is literally insane.
He's the most antagonistic president I can remember. Nixon worked better with the other party than this joker. Not that I want statist cooperation, but it's one more Big Lie from the Great Prevaricator.
Women live longer than men partly because their immune systems age more slowly
and partly because the rest of their bodies age more slowly. Got it.
But what's the biological/evolutionary imperative for this phenomenon?
The grandmother hypothesis seems to make some sense.
A caveman who got too old to hunt wasn't much use to the tribe any longer. A cavewoman who got to old to have children and forrage could still care for the children of her daughters and nieces.
Exactly!
I thought it was because they nag their menfolk to death.
I always thought that men who made it past 35 or so had an equal chance of going the distance. Just the larger number of men killed jumping dirt bikes, in criminal activity, driving drunk, etc. drags the average down.
That is correct. More men die young, which skews the average life expectancy.
There have also been recent studies to show the age gap is decreasing and its been occurring as more women enter the workforce.
Obviously correlation =/= causation, but its just as likely a conclusion to draw and I would ascribe that to being the reason women live longer. Men have worked, exerted, and stressed themselves out more than women to provide for the family and as that has become more balanced in America, so has life expectancy across the genders.
The immune system probably has something to do with it, but less so IMO.
But it's still increasing for both.
Some people think that this is a bad thing.
Well, some people think it's bad when everyone gets richer if that includes the rich getting richer at a faster pace than the poor are getting richer.
An argument which completely discounts the stay-at-home mom. Which means it's bullshit.
Then why are women's life expectancies going down as more of them enter the work force? I'm not saying stay at home mom is the gravy train, but when I look at the job my grandfather worked vs. my grandmother, it's hard not to believe there's some merit to the argument.
Also, how does it completely discount stay at home? It just says working is harder on you.
Eh, I think being the stay at home parent can be very stressful, but honestly....from what I've seen, it really isn't for most people.
Keeping track of three or four kids without modern labor saving appliances is one thing. But nowadays, keeping track of one or two kids with all the modern conveniences is often equated to the life of a ranch or farm wife. And it just ain't the same.
I think I have to call bullshit on the "its so difficult to be a housewife" arguement.
I spent 21 years in the navy as a single man - the whole time *I* was the one who had to clean the house, do the laundry, fix the car, mow the lawn. I was the one who had to pack up my house and get it moved when transfering and had to find a new place to live when I got to the next duty station.
I did all the stuff a housewife does *in addition* to my day job and it wasn't hard.
I can't imagine that having a couple of kids ramps up the difficulty so much.
Raising kids can be extremely stressful to the stay at home mom, but for how long? A couple of years when they're young and completely incapable, and few years when they become teenaged sub-human apes that fling poop at everything you tell them.
how many times do i have to tell you not to post on Hit & Run?
Killer! Early Graver!
Hmm. I always figured it was mostly because men drink and smoke more and engage in more dangerous jobs and leisure activities as greater rates.
Did they control for stress, smoking, and alcohol? Maybe Japanese men age faster because they work crazy hours.
That must be why women age so much better than men, oh, wait...
So you're saying the key to eternal life lies in the blood of young women?

Because you just said that hipsters ruin everything for everyone. Concern for who else is into a certain thing is a very hipster attitude.

Warp speed may be real. No word on Vulcans.
This is from like the 90s. Also Vulcans are obviously doomed even if they are real, so what difference, at this point, does it make?
Yes, why does this keep reappearing as new news? I can't recall seeing that happen so much with a science story.
Some reporter somewhere stumbles across it and thinks its awesome, but since they don't pay attention to science/space stuff, it doesn't occur to them that something like this has been reported before. Clearly they would have heard about something as cool as warp drive, right?
I think I first heard about this last year. And I mean just the latest, not the concept itself, which I think I heard about earlier.
They're moving to a new lab. That's the change.
It will be a lovely curiosity, but I don't see an actual drive coming out of it: the radiation flux created by blasting through interstellar protons (IIRC on atom of H per cubic meter) at speeds well below the speed of light would cook the crew and the electronics. I shudder to think what superluminal travel would do, not to mention blueshifting any ultraviolet they run into into gamma rays.
There's supposed to be some theoretical support for this not being suicidal or homicidal, but we'll see. Working at all is the big nut to crack at this point.
If they can build something that doesn't create a bowshock of fusing H, I will be really surprised. Thrilled too, because it will allow humanity to disperse across the galaxy.
Technically it would "allow humanity to disperse across the galaxy more quickly." Even with ship speeds at like 10% of the speed of life you can colonize the whole galaxy in a couple million years or less.
Well, you can. I've already started.
I'm still practicing and building up the preliminary infrastructure.
I skipped that step and went straight to colonization. Thousands of modified Roombas are terraforming a nice planet orbiting Tau Ceti as we speak.
But without the practice they are causing global cooling via a misplaced minus sign.
That's okay, they're self-correcting and fully autonomous. And they have the power of vacuum.
Bravo, good sir. Bravo.
So that's where the berzerkers come from?
How do you get your sperm to leave orbit?
Even with ship speeds at like 10% of the speed of life you can colonize the whole galaxy in a couple million years or less.
Isn't that the Fermi Paradox? I think you can move through the Milky Way's volume in 10M years. So if we aren't the earliest possible spacefarers, where are the aliens?
They're standing behind you, Brett.
Maybe they have like really really long life spans so it takes a long time for them to produce the next generation?
Could be lots of reasons we don't see them. Communications may be beyond radio, so there's the silence. Might be some general tendency or rule about occupying systems with intelligent life, etc.
We're not really that far along ourselves, nor have we been technologically anything until very recently, so it's possible the solar system has been visited many times. In fact, maybe Galactic Galactigraphic is doing a special on us right now.
So if we aren't the earliest possible spacefarers, where are the aliens?
they are in the Masonic Lodges, eating our babies while shifted into Lizard Form. duh.
"Thrilled too, because it will allow humanity to disperse across the galaxy."
That's not a good thing.
The *crew* won't get blasted - the shockwave is contained in the leading edge of the warp bubble.
Unfortunately anyone in front of the damn thing when you turn it off is in for a bad day.
Assuming you can turn it off (its debatably whether or not you can get out of the bubble once its formed).
Assuming you can make one (since it requires exotic states of matter and energy that might not exist outside of a mathmeticians head).
Assuming that you can actually do it (since its just a mathematical solution to some of Einstein's equations - equations we know are incomplete - this may not even be something you can do in real life)
Alcubierre's theory was news in the 90's, but it was considered near impossible due to the power requirements. Dr. White modified the parameters of the theoretical drive to greatly reduce the required power needed to warp space sometime in the last five years (I can't find a specific date) - making us much closer to FTL than we previously thought.
That's not what Einstein's theory actually says, is it?
I think what it actually says is that an object with mass cannot be accelerated to the speed of light. Which, for most practical purposes, works out to the same thing.
I think what it actually says is that an object can't accelerate, or decelerate, through the speed of light. Whether they exist or not, objects that are always faster than the speed of light (tachyons) are not ruled out by his theories. As I understand it.
Mass increases with velocity according to the theory going to infinity at the speed of light, thus unless you can provide an infinite e, you cannot achieve a velocity of c with a positive m.
^^ This
However, charged particles can travel faster than the phase speed of light in certain medium. Cherenkov Radiation seen in water surrounding fission fuel elements is an example of this.
Which *doesn't* violate realtivity since relativity deals with c, speed of light in a vacuum.
"Faster-than-light (also superluminal or FTL) communications and travel refer to the propagation of information or matter faster than the speed of light. Under the special theory of relativity, a particle (that has rest mass) with subluminal velocity needs infinite energy to accelerate to the speed of light, although special relativity does not forbid the existence of particles that travel faster than light at all times (tachyons)."
Yes, however it does not rule out quantum tunneling past the speed of light.
not saying that an actual FTL drive could be made to work this way but if you could get close to C there might be some way of going past C without going through it.
Course the warp drive is probably more practical because getting anywhere near C means a thruster which does not use reaction mass and we havn't got the slightest clue how to do that except for solar sails which wouldn't work for this application.
Neither does it rule it in - since relativity is NOT quantum mechanics.
However nothing in quantum mechanics suggest that anything can "tunnel" through the c barrier as quantum mechanics fails as a theory at high energy levels (hence why we use relativity *and* QM - they both have their place but are incomplete individually).
NEM, yes, that is my understanding as well.
This is all wrong. The point of Einstein's Special Relativity is that all observers who monitor the progress of a beam of light will observe it to have the same speed, regardless of how fat the observers are traveling to each other.
The practical result of this is that if you were to fire your engines and accelerate away from your friend, it wouldn't matter how long you burned, how fast you were going, when you cut your engines, and he fires a laser at you, you both would detect the laser as going at 2.99E8 m/s.
The apparent increase in mass, the slowing of time etc all apply to the 'other guy'. If you fire your rocket until you are going 99.9% the speed of light away from the Earth, and you measure the mass of your ship, it will be the same (less any fuel you burned) as it was before you fired your engine. The guy on Earth will be the one perceiving your mass as having increases.
regardless of how fat the observers are
So travelling at the speed of light means only the other guys think I'm obese? Look forward to trying the new Warp Speed Diet.
However, two observers will always be able to agree on the *magnitude* of a velocity change even if they don't agree on the starting and ending velocity.
1 - why does this keep appearing as news every couple of years?
2 - The only link between ALcubierre Metric and Star Trek is that they both use the word warp.

Pot smokers are skinnier.
It's because it lowers blood sugar. I've often wondered why it hasn't been tried for certain types of diabetes.
Cures or prevents cancer, cures or prevents obesity...no wonder it's illegal!
Unless we can figure out a way for Big Pharma to patent it, it must be stopped.
OT slightly: New South Wales is looking at legalising medical marijuana, but only for the terminally sick or AIDS patients
That always fascinated me about my college buddies. The pot smoking girls were impervious to the "freshman 15."

Jesus Christ. What an awful, awful, book "Inferno" is. Dan Brown apparently just discovered Robert Malthus, but boy is he jazzed. Not one of his characters, even the good guys, can think of a single logical reason why half the human race shouldn't be wiped out via plague. And calling the writing "predictable", "trite" or "illogical" would be doing a disservice to all of those fine words. But Brown does describe the city of Florence prettily.
In a just world, this would be the lead of my review:
Some authors should be beaten with feedbags full of soft-cover thesauruses until they can't poop right ever again. Dan Brown isn't one of those authors. But I suspect a good, swift kick in the nuts would do him a world of good.
"Logorrhea plus vapidity usually equals a nonsensical blog full of multi-thousand word entries in today's world. Fortunately for those so afflicted, Dan Brown shows that in the wonderful place that is America, even they can make money."
The villain in his new book is a Transhumanist.
That asshole.
He may call himself a Transhumanist, but he's actually a Post-humanist.
Post-humanist sounds like Newspeak for misanthropist.
Pretty much nailed it, Res!
I guess this is where I admit to having read all of his other books and almost picking up Inferno while at Sam's yesterday...
Me too RBS. But I pretty much hated The Lost Symbol. Except that one chase scene in the laboratory. That was pretty cool.
behold, the eight worst sentences in Inferno. Well, maybe there are worse, but who dares read it?
He should have read some more Mark Twain, I see.
I don't see how he could have, as bad as Brown writes.
My mom bought me The Da [sic] Vinci Code, and I slogged through 20 pages. The last 18 were for mom.
Authors of "Inferno" (probably not a complete list):
Dante Alighieri
Larry Niven & Jerry Pournelle
Dan Brown
And Brown's is the one you choose to read?
You think I'd read it if I were not paid to do so? You sick, sick man.
Add Francis M. Cockrell to the list.
(I just wish the movie were available on DVD.)
Niven and Pournelle's is the best.
Fuck Dan Brown. Read THIS instead:

Whenever I'm discussing Dan Brown, I always take the opportunity to recommend Umberto Eco's Foucault's Pendulum. It's turgid, pretentious and one of my favorite novels of all time.
It is a fun book.
Virtually all of Eco's work is worth reading, especially the non-fiction. Eco is one of my intellectual idols.

Sure we do.
The article reports a partial lie or since it was an opinion being reported, a partial stupidity.
"Families are adamant the black-market scheme is cheaper and quicker than Disney's official VIP guides and fast passes."
Um, fast passes are free. Besides that, how is this a black market scheme? That indicates it's illegal. To my knowledge it is not illegal to pay someone to peaceably assemble with you.
It might violate Disney World policy. Which would be quite within their rights, I think.
every union protest in DC does that. they hire homeless people to picket.
It's definitely faster. It's funny, but I just heard a story about someone with an actual relative in a wheelchair (temporarily) who got this premium treatment at Disney.
Sweet.

Have some dirty diaper with your morning coffee.
According to 9News.com in Denver, Ruth Burgos had to change her one-year-old son's diaper while getting a coffee on Friday night. Realizing that there was no changing table in the store's restroom, she changed him in the seating area, on the seat.
"As a mother, you have to do what you have to do. Wherever you have to do it," she told 9News. "I just kind of wiped him off, cleaned him off as quickly as I could."
Her husband says a Starbucks employee was rude to his wife, speaking in what he claims was a "demeaning tone."
No counter or floor, either?
Yeah, last time I went somewhere with no changing table I plopped my son down on the floor. This is why I have a little changing pad in his diaper bag.
Bingo.
If I was at a coffee shop (no idea why I was there) and someone started changing a baby I would be pissed if the employees stopped at 'demeaning'.
And I'm sure when a victim of e-coli poisoning from her baby's poop sues Starbucks, she'll be right there leaping to its defense!
I would have felt the same way 6 months ago, but now as the proud dad of a 6 month old baby, I don't give a shit about this kind of stuff anymore. I'll change the damn kid wherever it's convenient, and as long as I clean up after myself, I really don't care what you think.
Thanks for ruining it for those of us who still respect other people and don't think the whole damn world revolves around us.
No problem. It hurts nobody to have a baby changed on a table. As far as I'm concerned, the people who think the world revolves around them are the people who would tell somebody else where they can and cannot change a baby because it grosses them out a little bit.
Cool, I'll go take a shit on your table, and as long as I wipe it up after, I really don't care what you think.
You know if you came and took a shit on my table an then cleaned up after your self I wouldn't give a damn either.
The key operative word is CLEANED.
Jesus Christ, are you people the worst diaper changers in the world? How the fuck are you getting shit all over the surfaces your baby is laying on?
Right, because I'm interested in smelling your kid's shit while I'm eating, as long as it's more convenient for you.
Did you also turn into one of the fucks who feels no obligation to take a screeching kid outside because it might not be convenient for you?
I wonder if he complains about drunk college kids being too loud at 11:30 PM when his kid is sleeping.
Ha, a friend of mind lived two blocks of campus in a large old rental house. On the left was a young couple with one young kid, and that couple had another large old rental house on the other side.
So obviously, these two large old rental houses were constantly filled with students. Damn if that family didn't constantly bitch. I mean, you buy a house that's between two shabby old rental houses that are located two blocks from a college campus. Who did you think your neighbors would be?
Complaining about that isn't too bad, as long as you don't combine it with making a ton of racket at 7 AM and then think that it's the other person's problem for sleeping in too late.
Eh, its a large old house on a block of large old houses right by a large university. It's bleeding obvious that your neighbors are going to be loud annoying college students. They wanted to live in the city, this house was cheap, they snapped it up. It was cheap for a reason: no one wants to buy a house to live in that's located on a block of student rentals.
Nope.
Even I have enough common sense to not put my kid's dirty diaper on a place where people eat.
Thanks for admitting you're too lazy to walk your ass 50 feet to change them.
Dude, they make all kinds of baby supplies that make this unnecessary. They are portable and sanitary and no one needs to smell (or consume) your kid's poo.
Join the (semi)free market and partake of its bounty!
You are a complete idiot.
No one is more self-centered about their kid than me. My kid is destined to rule all of you and grind your fucking faces into the dirt and I am training him up for that as we speak. I would gladly kill you all if I thought he would find it amusing. Nothing any of you do is as interesting or important as anything my kid does.*
But even I would not have changed my kid's diaper where other people are eating.
Why don't I just take a shit on the coffee shop table myself while I'm at it? SPLOOOOOOSH, giant semi-liquid shit all over the place. Good times.
*Hyperbole? Maybe. Maybe not.
Your "kid" will rule? I have a whole regiment of them. Superior numbers always wins out. Prepare accordingly.
"giant semi-liquid shit all over the place"
Go see a doctor.
ditto. go back to your car. I'm not even against doing it in public if it has to be done .... but not where people eat. cmon.
And you are a shitheel.
If we chance to meet "IRL" and you change your spawn in a public dining facility in front of me you're going to leave wearing the shitty diaper on your face.
Eh, go fuck yourself. If you're so small that you would pick a fight with somebody just trying to get their baby changed, then I hope we never meet either.
So, that makes you a selfish prick. Thanks for letting us know.
Yeah, this fatherhood thing is definitely turning me into more of a selfish prick. So it goes.
Note to everyone in the civilized world:
No one gives a crap about your kid. Even fewer people want to share the joys of you changing diapers.
No "changing table"? Suck it up and do it on the floor in the restoroom.
I've changed diapers, It's not something I've enjoyed but I certainly wouldn't tout it like it gave me profound wisdom.

You know, that could be setting quite a precedent.
American Patriots Against Government Excess was asked to provide summaries or copies of all material passed out at meetings. The group had been reading the "The 5000 Year Leap" by Cleon Skousen and the U.S. Constitution. The group's president, Marion Bower, sent a copy of both to the IRS. "I don't have time to write a book report for them," she said.
I suppose *that* group got audited big time.

I've had a lot more problems lately. Not an expert on these matters but all the 'links' (or whatever they are called) to social media sites, whereby the staff hopes to increase page views/interest in the site, seem to take forever to load.
I constantly have to refresh in order to post a comment.
All this has driven me away from the site, as much as I enjoy it.
That shit has got to go. And would it kill them to replace them with EDIT BUTTON?
I just got a new laptop so I'm not having anymore issues but until two days ago I could barely get an article to load on my old one. I second the edit button.
No edit button. You made your choices, you live with your choices.
I use the spell-check in my brain. It's fine for English, but unfortunately it doesn't work so well in German. 🙁
Schade.
Can we have an edit window of opportunity for stupid typoes? Say two minutes?
That would be a decent compromise. Then there isn't a concern about people going back and changing arguments, etc.
The Ghostery add-on seems to work well for the stupid social media buttons and other little things like that.
And the readability score, please.
Maybe we should start grading posts by Reason staff on their readability score too. Ed apparently expects his AM Links readers to be in at least grade 12.15. Sorry sam!
Ghostery can be your friend.
I've been having problems with reason and memory-handling for years. The anti-social networking shit has a fair amount to do with it, as I often hit the Escape key to get the main page to stop loading, only for the Facebook/Google Minus/Twatter stuff to start reloading when I scroll down and more widgets show up in the viewing area.
It's intensely irritating.
Do you have problem loading a really long comments section? I find it incredibly irritating when I hit refresh and my screen jumps all over the place.
Whenever I post a comment to a longer comment section, the site refreshes someplace other than where the new comment is, several screens upthread.
That too is irritating.
Learn to love NoScript... assuming you have access to install your own browser and add-ins to the machine you're working on.
Switch to Chrome and install Ghostery.
Yeah, that tends to fuck witg my android devices quite seriously. There's some script that never stops running, creates a massive memory leak, and forces me to restart the browser frequently.
If only all gays were like Bret Easton Ellis. This is a seriously masterful rant.
I was just reading that, and it's stupendous. Everything Ellis says in that article is pretty true of feminism and other sorts of left-wing identity politics as well.
And several of the commenters do exactly what Bret was talking about in his piece.
Isn't that just how they treat Obama? The black savior!
Wow. I think I'm now in love with Bret Easton Ellis.
No gay.

Only drug dealers houses get broken into apparently. Subliminal "fuck you" to anybody who claims they need a gun for self defense.
One of my mates lived in a roughish suburb, but the small street he lived on was very safe and never had any burglaries. Local junkies knew a major drug dealer lived on the street and they were too scared of him to risk accidentally ripping him off.
I think the moral is keep drugs illegal to stop home invasions, or something
Or let everybody know that if somebody attempts to rob from me I will shoot that person - without hesitation.
When the Katrinians invaded my neighborhood, there were break ins everywhere but my apartment complex. The reason was that the dealers were posted up at the entrance gates all night long. Some of the best security I've ever had.
Last time my house was burglarized, the very first words out of the cop's mouth were "Was this drug related?"
After I refused to let him search the apartment for drugs, he shrugged his shoulders and left. No report or nothing.
That's why I will never again call the cops unless there's a dead body. Even when you're the victim of a crime, they treat you like you're a criminal.

Polly voo fron say?
Averse, a self-labeled progressive black metal band is a new band on the scene from France, debuting with an excellent album titled The Endesque Chants (2010). Though they are billed by most as black metal, they are a lot more progressive, in the vein of early to mid-years Opeth, than black (though when they want to do black metal, they are very black metal). In fact, one could argue that they've arrived at a similar place as (pre-Heritage) Opeth, only from a black metal background as opposed to a death metal one. Their widespread use of strings, woodwinds, and acoustic guitars bring a sensibility to the band not often found in the metal world, which is a very good thing. They've managed to differentiate themselves from the fray from the very outset, yet still maintain a solid metal performance on their debut
Enjoy!

In Louisiana red light cam photos cannot be evidence of traffic violations because the accused cannot confront their accuser in court. Thus the municipalities that have them try to bluff people into paying. Ultimately the ticket amounts to the municipality making a civil claim that X person owes them money. People who dont pay are turned over to collection agencies.
If we challenge the agency to prove the debt is legit, they fuck off, cuz they cant.
Besides tearing each and every traffic cam down, this is the only policy which makes sense.
Want to be a pretentious douche? There's an app for that.
In her keynote speech at last year's annual Netroots Nation gathering, Darcy Burner pitched a seemingly simple idea to the thousands of bloggers and web developers in the audience. The former Microsoft MSFT +1.51% programmer and congressional candidate proposed a smartphone app allowing shoppers to swipe barcodes to check whether conservative billionaire industrialists Charles and David Koch were behind a product on the shelves.
Burner figured the average supermarket shopper had no idea that buying Brawny paper towels, Angel Soft toilet paper or Dixie cups meant contributing cash to Koch Industries through its subsidiary Georgia-Pacific. Similarly, purchasing a pair of yoga pants containing Lycra or a Stainmaster carpet meant indirectly handing the Kochs your money (Koch Industries bought Invista, the world's largest fiber and textiles company, in 2004 from DuPont).
The silly bitch imagines that only people who dont want to buy from the kochs will use the app.
For realsies.
I'd be tempted to use the app specifically to make sure that as many of my purchases as possible come from Koch owned companies.
Because fuck her and all the other smug, self satisfied left-tard hipster douches, that's why.
So you're telling me there are people who want to pay for the privilege of being told who is being a product they want to buy, prompting them to choose an alternative (with presumably less value) product?
I think that its awesome that they can't buy yoga pants. I'm just revelling in that. Also, I may get this app just so I can be sure all of my purchases are on the hipster disapproved list.
Not just yoga pants. Lycra is in fucking everything. This is laughable.
No sexy underwear for Koch boycotters!
Uh I bet that he would quickly abandon that when he realizes just how many things are touched by the Kochtopus.

Just saw Welch on MSNBC. Millbank claimed that Benghazi and Fast and Furious are bogus scandals. Wow. Tony level denial and rationalization.
It's ok when Team Blue! does it.
I can't believe how little regard there has been for the dead people in the Benghazi attack. The death of a first-tour FSO (Anne Smedinghoff) garnered way more sympathy than an Ambassador murdered by a mob in a terrorist attack.
If an Ambassador is killed, you got big problems, because they have way more security around them than an entry-level consular officer.
Yeah but that diplochick was a way for the media to get their Cute Dead White Girl on with extra terrorist spice.
Well, it's now hidden behind a pay wall, but:
Local columnist Jon Carroll, who has been claiming the administration's innocence of misdeeds re: Benghazi changes tune.
No, he's not calling for what you might think; he notes the 100th anniversary of the start of WWI is arriving (only a year off), and then takes the Repubs to task for bothering the administration since WWIII could break out, and then where would we be?!

So, Defiance went full Heinlein this week and portrayed a group marriage(2 pretty boys and 1 woman who kept them around to fulfill her needs). Seriously, Reason, if you have thought about watching this show, catch up now.
I saw the first one and thought it was OK, but couldn't finish the second. Never watched it again.
The second was very weak and not fun. It was a bad choice to put second. Honestly, you can just skip it and go to 3. The third is a monster hunt, the fourth is a rescue mission, and the fifth is a hold out against the bandits. Yeah, they are doing classical western tropes but in sci fi. Thanks Star Trek!
I mean, it has thematic importance, but yeah, it is their weakest episode so far.
I also didn't find the characters that compelling. And I found the lack of scantily clad hot chicks to be disturbing. A good science fiction series is supposed to have hot chicks in it.
Firefly, Battlestar Galactica, Star Trek, Dr Who, Stargate, Lexx, Andromeda, Sliders... all with hot chicks showing some leg.
Defiance? meh
The whore sister of the mayor and the red head don't do it for ya? I mean, all Farscaoe really had was 2. Then again, Claudia Black+Virginia Hey.
Nope. Didn't do it for me. That and shows with too many different kinds of aliens tend to bore me. Notice Deep Space Nine wasn't on my list.
Or Babylon 5! Which, seriously, dude. Who doesn't like Babylon 5? Other than people who hate the plot of Mass Effect
Or Babylon 5
Oh yeah. I forgot. That was a good show.
The prostitute is half naked pretty much every time she's on screen. Apparently that's not enough for Sarcasmic.
Then again, she has boobs, so maybe she just isn't his type.
The prostitute is half naked pretty much every time she's on screen.
She wasn't on the screen enough to keep me interested.
Are you daft? Gigi Edgley would like a word.
She looked hotter with the makeup. Nope, Sokuzu and Zhan (without the makeup) were by far hotter.
Re: sarcasmic,
Well, except for the super-hot Karen Gillan, the rest of the women featured in that show range from just OK to repulsive.
Maybe the producers should stick with hiring only Scottish actresses.
I was thinking more of the Tom Baker years. Damn, he had some fine companions.
Both Romanas, the mighty Leela
Ah, well, you're talking about something completely different!
Mary Tamm, Louise Jameson. It is unfortunate that Mary died so young, last year of cancer (same with Elisabeth "Sara Jane Smith" Sladen, who died in 2011.)
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
Jenna Louise Coleman is pretty good looking.
I feel like the two companions since they got a straight man to be show runner have been much better looking than the companions from the days when they had a gay show runner.
Which makes a good bit of sense.
Re: Irish,
Who was the gay show runner?
Russell T. Davies was the show runner from 2005 until Steven Moffat took over in 2010.
I wish Moffat hadn't done that. He's my favorite writer and now he doesn't write enough.

He's rating on a scale modified for English women.
Wait, who was the hot chick that showed leg in Stargate? I can think of the occasional episode with one but they were not regular occurrances and the only regular female characters throughout most of the shows run were always in military uniforms all the time.
True. Stargate didn't have leg on a regular basis. Though it did have quite a few hotties, that's for sure.
Well of course, Amanda Tapping was massively hot and she was in almost every episode
Got to finish Revolution and Falling Skies first. Then maybe I'll start catching up on Defiance (if Futurama and Arrested Development don't get in the way).
How has Falling Skies been? I watched the first season but lost track of it after that. I recall it having some very good elements, but wishing the youngest kid and his plotlines would go die in a fire.
Season two starts in a few weeks.
Okay. I stopped watching after Noah Wylie went to hang with the tall aliens.
I'm sorry. Season three is coming soon. Two ended with enough questions that I'll tune in for answers.
Overall I've liked season 2 more than season 1 (though I enjoyed both).
I've been watching online and am about to finish season 2. I think you mean season 3 starts soon.
Season two three starts in a few weeks.
FTFY. Season two was last summer.
I should refresh more often.
I honestly forgot about Chiana. Her personality always bugged me.

Yet more evidence that psychology is a pseudo-science

First, the hypothesis you want to confirm:
Now, the confirmation bias:
You see, boys and girls, you formulate a hypothesis and then you go out to look for a phenomenon that will fit it, not unlike designing a dress and then go out to find the perfect woman that can wear it. Simple!
Doesn't matter that the data did NOT confirm the hypothesis at all.
Freshman year in college I was sitting in a psychology class listening to a lecture and it hit me...this is complete bullshit.
next semester I loaded up on chemistry, biology and physics. I never took a psychology past what was required.
Yessir. I sat in on a gf's 300 level psych class a few times, and had the undying urge to scream "correlation does not imply causation!!!"
It was fun to take an engineering stats class in parallel with a poli sci stats class. That's what killed what little faith i had in public polling.

Is it too cynical of me to think that the Obama administration has no interest in importing more white evangelical Christians?
The two heads of that German family have only themselves to blame. If they had just opened their minds a little bit and converted to Islam, they would've obtained their resident visas almost instantaneously.
Why should anyone have an interest in doing that?
