Courtney Widener's brother Casey, 22, serves in the Air Force and had just returned from a deployment in Afghanistan, so she thought it would be great if he could walk her down the red carpet at her high school prom. Not accompany her, just walk her to the door. But officials at Liberal High School in Kansas blocked the request, citing school rules barring anyone over 21 from taking part in any prom activities. After local and national media picked up the story, school officials apologized to the family and said they may consider changing the rules to allow family members to walk a student down the red carpet even if they are over 21.

School officials just taught students that if they cry to media they can get the rules changed. Slippery slope. Those administrators rely on the rulebook. They live and die by it. Toss out rigid rules and what do you have? Officials using judgment, looking at situations critically and making decisions case by case. In other words, anarchy.

kinda ironic that schools, the very places where one might expect critical thinking to be taught, are governed by the opposite of that. All these zero-tolerance rules where honor students face expulsion over science experiments, a forgotten shotgun in a truck, using an unauthorized Midol, etc.

On would hope so, but I have the feeling that this is NOT the way it works. If a libertarians were formed because of the run-ins with authority in the government school system, we'd be a country full of libertarians.

I never really thought about the day I became a libertarian. It didn't occur to me until much later but it probably happened the second to last day of 6th grade when our entire lunch table was falsely accused and unjustly punished. It was that day when I learned what it meant to be in a no-win situation with authority figures. Sadly, my integrity in the situation did not rub off on my fellow accused, including the one person that lied instead of standing up for himself or us getting off Scot free.

Call me old, but I don't have a problem with schools banning 21+ from proms. It's unfortunate that this heart tuggingly unusual circumstance conflicts with an otherwise sensible rule, but give me a fcking break.
