Brickbat: Liberal School Policy

Courtney Widener's brother Casey, 22, serves in the Air Force and had just returned from a deployment in Afghanistan, so she thought it would be great if he could walk her down the red carpet at her high school prom. Not accompany her, just walk her to the door. But officials at Liberal High School in Kansas blocked the request, citing school rules barring anyone over 21 from taking part in any prom activities. After local and national media picked up the story, school officials apologized to the family and said they may consider changing the rules to allow family members to walk a student down the red carpet even if they are over 21.

Huh, local and national media MAY have actually done something good for once. Broken clocks and all that...
School officials just taught students that if they cry to media they can get the rules changed. Slippery slope. Those administrators rely on the rulebook. They live and die by it. Toss out rigid rules and what do you have? Officials using judgment, looking at situations critically and making decisions case by case. In other words, anarchy.
THE HORROR!!!
[run and hides under corner table. Prays to Obama to restore order. Curses freedom]
The Simpsons had an episode on this theme back in the late 90s, with Lisa writing to President Clinton when the Springfield Elementary band was shafted in a band contest.
Ah, man that was a good episode!
I wouldn't even give them that much credit. Had the brother not just returned from a deployment, the schoold administration wouldn't have given this a second look.
What would be the mascot at Liberal High?
What would be the mascot at Liberal High?
I think this would be appropriate.
Is that Warty? Did he shave or something?
You don't want to know what Warty really looks like.

They also have the losingist sports teams in their league, because the coach isn't allowed to discriminate on anything as abstract as "talent" or "ability".
Sometimes man, you jsut have to roll with it.

citing school rules barring anyone over 21 from taking part in any prom activities
Oooo, a chaperone-less prom. That should get pretty interesting.
Peer pressure keeps things in check.
kinda ironic that schools, the very places where one might expect critical thinking to be taught, are governed by the opposite of that. All these zero-tolerance rules where honor students face expulsion over science experiments, a forgotten shotgun in a truck, using an unauthorized Midol, etc.
On the other hand, kids get an early start on not trusting so-called authority figures and in developing a health skepticism of govt.
On would hope so, but I have the feeling that this is NOT the way it works. If a libertarians were formed because of the run-ins with authority in the government school system, we'd be a country full of libertarians.
I never really thought about the day I became a libertarian. It didn't occur to me until much later but it probably happened the second to last day of 6th grade when our entire lunch table was falsely accused and unjustly punished. It was that day when I learned what it meant to be in a no-win situation with authority figures. Sadly, my integrity in the situation did not rub off on my fellow accused, including the one person that lied instead of standing up for himself or us getting off Scot free.
What difference does it make to the story whether the older brother was a FedGov worker?
It's usually a pretty emotional deal, for themselves and their families, when members of the military return from deployment.
I guess I'm just sick and tired of the whole military worship thing we've had since 9/11.
If you don't suck military cock, you hate America and freedom and stuff.
America hater.
I guess it was too much to hope for that at some point an 18 year old senior had married a 22 year old before prom.
"But my 30-year-old date has the mental capacity of an 8-year-old!"
"Oh, so he's running for Senate?"
"That's right, so please don't call him 'Ma'am'."
He's earned that...
I'm embarrassed to admit this happened 30 miles from my home town.
And their mascot used to be the Redskins, although obviously that could have changed at some point.
Whoooo! No teachers at the prom!!!
Call me old, but I don't have a problem with schools banning 21+ from proms. It's unfortunate that this heart tuggingly unusual circumstance conflicts with an otherwise sensible rule, but give me a fcking break.
Are teachers at the door now supposed to run a background check to confirm that every pervert is really someone's cousin?
I can just see the school admins. reading every week about such mishigos at other schools and laughing, never once generalizing to the fact that the strict application of some of their own school's rules could lead to similar wacky news stories.
