Livestream Today, 2pm ET/11am PT: The Sounds of Capitalism, w Kennedy and UCLA's Tim Taylor
Come to Reason.com's Hit & Run blog today at 2pm ET/11am PT for a special livestream event featuring Reason's Kennedy (also a special correspondent for Fox Business' Stossel) and UCLA ethnomusicology professor Tim Taylor!
From the writeup of Taylor's The Sounds of Capitalism: Advertising, Music, and the Conquest of Culture:
From the early days of radio through the rise of television after World War II to the present, music has been used more and more often to sell goods and establish brand identities. And since at least the 1920s, songs originally written for commercials have become popular songs, and songs written for a popular audience have become irrevocably associated with specific brands and products. Today, musicians move flexibly between the music and advertising worlds, while the line between commercial messages and popular music has become increasingly blurred.
The Sounds of Capitalism is the untold story of this infectious part of our musical culture. Here, Timothy D. Taylor tracks the use of music in American advertising for nearly a century, from variety shows like The Clicquot Club Eskimosto the rise of the jingle, the postwar rise in consumerism and the more complete fusion of popular music and consumption in the 1980s and after.
The livestream conversation will start right here at Hit & Run at 2pm ET/11am PT and run for about 30 minutes.

Gillespie would have sold more books if he appeared naked on the cover riding a horse/mule/co-author.
it would certainly have been a declaration of some sort
Why not a hinny?
Sexist hybridist!
your link is SFW. Are you OK?
6-year-old daughter is home on school vacation.
Haha, I think that's the best reason to be concerned for someone's well-being.
I vote "foe".
Way off topic, but anyone read Kennedy's book? Would it be worth bothering to click, click and order?
1992-1996 was the "Golden Age" of MTV? It was dead and buried by then, with the then toddlers from Jersey Shore shitting on its shallow grave.
I'd argue 1981-1986.
I'm gonna say 88-92 or thereabouts. That's when it got really cheezy. Yo MTV Raps, Headbangers Ball (with mostly hair bands), Dance Party USA, and crap like that wall to wall.
Damn it, not Dance Party, Club MTV, you know what I mean.
Was that the upskirt camera shot show?
In the early 1990s, they still had 120 Minutes, easily the best show that station ever produced.
absolutely
I measure the death of MTV from the beginning of The Real World.
that's when I stopped watching.
That's a good measure but it started being mediocre before that. I'd say it was running out of steam in '88 or '89.
music was running out of steam too. The late 80s was getting pretty bare (generally speaking) and then Nirvana gave the death blow.
Once it started making original programming, the end was written. When you turned it on and didn't get music within 5 minutes--even something you didn't want to hear--, it was on its way out.
Nah. What about Liquid Television? Eddie the Flying Gimp, Aeon Flux, and the original Beavis & Butthead. That had to be '90, at least.
I didn't say there was nothing good after, but it was the seed of destruction. 1987's Remote Control was the beginning of the end.
Yes, I recall turning on MTV and going "I don't get music videos for half an hour now while this shit is on? What the fuck?!?"
Don't forget The Maxx.
Yeah. See. This was some of the pre-cursor of the great animation renaissance of those that wanted to be edgier than The Simpsons (who still deserve much of the credit).
I don't think I ever completely put together what it was about, what happened, what it meant, or anything else, but it was a pretty damn awesome show.
That, and Aeon Flux, and of course Beavis and Butthead.
Those had quite the influence on me.
Me either. I think it had something to do with a rabbit? Was The Maxx a giant rabbit or something?
Shit, I never knew this was turned into a show. I gave up on MTV way before then.
Those are pretty much the only years I ever watched MTV. I'm sure that it was already declining in some ways. But they had Beavis and Butthead and still had cool stuff on late at night.
That's got to tickle.
Yes but whom?
Somewhat related to Mtv: Ace of Base guy was a Nazi.
Judging by the music, he obviously had a background in torture.

Groovus is not going to be pleased.
I'm not which of those things are the most horrible. What a fuck up. I've always said I would love my children no matter what. But if one was a nazi and then was in ace of base, I'm pretty sure I would pretend I didn't know them.
You're surprised? You didn't see a sign?
Why didn't it open up your eyes?
Where is Randee Of The Redwoods when you need him?

Damn girl.
I really wish I was that horse right now.
Ha ha, her head is totally PS on there.
I think this completes the list of "Reason Contributors I Wouldn't Mind Seeing Naked On A Horse".
I will in fact buy books so that the rest remain fully clothed.
It's a photoshop, unfortunately.
I'm not so sure.
I am. Any photoshop artists want to chime in?
For the heck of it I tried some googling to find any history on the pic, which is difficult with her name being Kennedy and all. I did find references on liberal hate (tolerant people do not tolerate right wingers) forums that referenced it as if it was old, and these threads are themselves four and five years old. That suggests to me that it may be real.
Swinging 'no'.

Based on my reverse google-image fu, it's from some shitty electronica album cover here. Still looks like Kennedy.
I find that image titillating.
Photoshop or not.
I'm still wanting to believe that isn't a photoshop of Kennedy.
Why would you care? Do you think you have some actual chance of seeing her naked in real life?
Why would you care that I care?
Just curiosity. I always think it is funny when people react to information about celebrities that they find attractive as if they had a chance with them. It really doesn't affect your fantasy if your celebrity crush comes out as gay or gets married or something. I am similarly puzzled when people are upset when celebrities die. Everything you liked about them still exists, you haven't really lost anything (unless you had tickets to see them or something).
Even so the pic is from the 90s when she was in her 20s. She's like 40 now. Married with children and everything. I'm not sure I'd want to see her naked now.
I'm beginning to swing maybe not a photoshop:

Hello! That tattoo matches the pic of her on the donkey.
I'd like to suck a shot out of that belly button. Hell, make it a double.
I stand corrected. Man, that picture really looks like a photoshop, but I guess it's not.
Yeah, the giveaway is the tattoo, as I noted the other day.
Yeah, not bad. She still doesn't do much for me. The continuous pissed off expression just doesn't do it for me.
She looks angry to you? Seems it's more of a surprised or attention-getting look to me.

Apparently Gwyneth Paltrow sports a 70s style bush that Cameron Diaz once trimmed.

I'll be in my bunk...
