Satellite Images Show Destruction of Muslim Neighborhoods by Buddhists in Burma
Days of rioting left hundreds of homes destroyed

An argument between a Muslim shopkeeper and his Buddhist customers in the Burmese city of Meikhtila triggered several days of riots late last month. By the end of it about 40 people were killed and thousands displaced, with 828 buildings, mostly residential, being destroyed. Human Rights Watch has provided before-and-after satellite imagery to illustrate the damage (seen right).
Barack Obama became the first president to visit Burma, shortly after his re-election last year, and the administration hoped the continuation of a Bush-era policy of engagement might incentivize the regime to dial back its own human rights violations. In this latest round of sectarian violence, the Burmese president declared a state of emergency and condemned extremism, even saying he doesn't "endorse the use of force to solve problems" (presumably except when his government does it, brutally).

Buddhists causing harm to others? But I have been assured by non-Christians that only Christians and Muslims have violent members in their ranks.
Heroic M. has some mansplaining to do.
Clearly the Buddhist majority in Burma should treat their Muslim minority as fairly as Muslim-majority countries treat their religious minorities.
Oh, wait....
I too have been assured that Islam is the only violent religion. You don't see Buddhists rioting over silly stuff, do you?
Isn't buddhism athiest?
That looks like it really Myan-marred the landscape.
You are worse than Gregor Clegane and Joffrey Baratheon put together.
SPOILERS.
Personally, I thought Gregor Clegane was one of the more honorable people in the series.
Oh wait, I was thinking of Sandor. Nevermind!
We owned a rabbit named Sandor.
I hate you.
We were all thinking it, I just said it.
Some quality urban renewal.
No zoning boards and nimbys there.
Isn't attempted genocide pretty much the ultimate form of NIMBY-ism?
Krugnuts porn.
Dude I never even thought aboutr it like that before. Wow.

Sounds like they're due for some kinetic military action.
Buddhists have a mostly undeserved reputation for being peaceful. Their belligerence started the Sri Lankan Civil War. Shintoism is a splinter of Buddhism that was largely responsible for Japan's pre-WW2 transformation into a killing machine. And here they are violent again. Even in non-violent circumstances, the monastic types live like passive parasites. All they do is beg.
Shinto is the indigenous religion of Japan and has nothing to do with Buddhism.
Forget it, he's rolling.
Thank you, Tulpa. However Shinto reinforced the belief that the Japanese Imperial Family were the descendants of the Sun God. The militaristic elements within the government, and the military used this unique belief to create populist fervor and support for Japan's imperialistic ambitions, including WWII.
There's a funny story with that. There's a Shikoku Pilgrimage which is a tour of 88 temples. Well, 88 numbered temples, a couple of dozen unofficial ones. And No. 30, which has switched between two temples several times depending on which one the government favored with the official relics. I think the last two switches were before WW II and after. I gather they still argue mightily (but probably non-violently) over who should own the official relics.
That's my comment, and I'm sticking with it.
And yet there was no uproar when they built a Shinto temple near Pearl Harbor, unlike the mosque near the WTC.
That's because the connection between WW2 and Shinto-ism is very tenuous at best.
And of course, Japan lost WW2 in a pretty big way. While Islam is winning.
Actually, the Sri Lankan civil war was the result of racial quotas and affirmative action.
"Buddhists have a mostly undeserved reputation for being peaceful."
Tell me about it, try short-changing a Bangkok taxi driver.
You're thinking of Zen Buddhism probably.
While the Buddhists are being violent, it's a reaction to the Muslims there wanting to impose sharia law and using violence as well.
Personally, good to see someone fighting back against Islam
I'l admit that when I hear about a Buddhist-Muslim conflict, my sympathies immediately go to the Buddhists.
