  • It's not just Bob Woodward; the White House has a history of throwing tantrums and threatening reporters.

  • Bitcoin has doubled in value against the dollar over the last two months.

Millions of people are losing their healthcare coverage due to Obamacare...

We're finding out what's in it.

When it doesn't hurt to have a low IQ.

      2. Trespassers W   12 years ago

The best MST is "Space Mutiny".

It makes me feel bad for you to see you be so wrong.

        1. BakedPenguin   12 years ago

You know, if you'd said Manos, I could have still had a small amount of respect for you.

Okay, that's a lie. There's no way I could ever respect you.

        2. Night Elf Mohawk   12 years ago

Manos, Sidehackers, and Robot vs. the Aztec Mummy.

Lots, but not quite as much as for "Plan 9 From Outer Space".

        3. robc   12 years ago

The correct answer is Fugitive Alien.

Okay, probably not, but its has the best song.

C'mon, man, I'm not sure that's even as good as the Gamera song. Next you'll be saying you prefer Blaze Bailey to Bruce Dickinson.

Sidehackin' is one big bash, the favorite sport of cheap white trash.

      3. Enough About Palin   12 years ago

        The fuck is MST?

        1. Paul.   12 years ago

          Mystery Science Theater 3000?

What kind of glibertarian are you?

          1. Clich? Bandit   12 years ago

TECHNICALLY it is abbreviated MST3K but these disrespecting troglodytes don't observe the protocols.

      4. The Immaculate Trouser   12 years ago

MST3K was good, but IMO Rifftrax is better. "Birdemic" and "The Room" were absolute gold.

        1. Timrek   12 years ago

I saw Birdemic in a theater in Madison. Very, very good. Woman killed by bad CGI eagle while taking a crap...FTW!

It convinced me that we should replace all firearms with hotel hangers.

        2. C. Anacreon   12 years ago

I actually got to do a phone interview with the whole MST team for a mag I was involved with in 1992. Even Joel was on the call. I was so starstruck, I think I spent the whole time trying to act like I was cool enough to hang with them rather than doing a good job asking questions. Interview came out pretty crappy as a result, but they did include a copy of it in their press kit for several years after that.

      5. lap83   12 years ago

The 80s mst3ks are my favorite, like Hobgoblins and Space Mutiny

        Gristle McThornBody
        Slake Fistcrunch
        Buff Hardback
        Bob Johnson
        Reef Blastbody
        Big McLargeHuge

        1. lap83   12 years ago

Should say 80s films, not 80s episodes

  3. Alack   12 years ago

The reign of Pope Benedict XVI ended earlier today.

But without his leadership, the Galactic Empire will crumble!

    1. itsnotmeitsyou   12 years ago

That's why he retired. He had to go back to Coruscant.

It's not just Bob Woodward; the White House has a history of throwing tantrums and threatening reporters.

That kind of thing got such good results back in Chicago, why not apply it at the national level?

    1. Episiarch   12 years ago

Hey, it worked for four years. Don't knock it until you try it.

      1. Fist of Etiquette   12 years ago

Bush did it too? I've heard that so much from the left, I'm beginning to think that the whole "hope and change" thing was just a ruse!

  6. Andrew S.   12 years ago

I'll miss you guys. Well, some of you. Okay, I won't miss any of you.

Death panels... IN SPACE. (That's how they got rid of Khan, remember.)

    1. Episiarch   12 years ago

      They offered the world ORDERLIES!

    2. Pro Libertate   12 years ago

I like that they plan to use a Bigelow inflatable module. It sounded like they'd have people doing the whole trip in a Dragon/Orion/whatever spacecraft, which would be a tight fit for a trip of that duration.

      1. Fist of Etiquette   12 years ago

Inflatable module? Like a bouncy castle... IN SPACE?

        1. Pro Libertate   12 years ago

Precisely. I see that you are familiar with the plan.

        2. Paul.   12 years ago

No sharp objects allowed, though, so it won't be a very Libertarian ride.

          1. Pro Libertate   12 years ago

Well, the Bigelow habitat is not a suicide pact.

      2. robc   12 years ago

        Orion

        ???

        Boom boom?

        1. Pro Libertate   12 years ago

I hope it's Dragon, because waiting on NASA or its usual buddies is a fool's game.

          1. robc   12 years ago

I was making a joke about them reusing names. Orion will always be this, to me.

            1. Pro Libertate   12 years ago

It's the bestest and brightest Orion.

I always think of Project Daedalus.

The Founders invented states so a bunch of idiots couldn't fuck up the whole country.

      1. Rich   12 years ago

        Dammit, Drake -- *that's* a buzzkill.

      2. Palin's Buttplug   12 years ago

Tell Heritage that. They love the federal mandate.

        1. Enough About Palin   12 years ago

WTF is wrong with you? Really. WTF?

          1. mad libertarian guy   12 years ago

            He's a lefty troll.

            It's really that simple.

          2. Palin's Buttplug   12 years ago

They do. Heritage proposed the federal mandate in 1993 in response to Hillarycare.

            1. Enough About Palin   12 years ago

WHO FUCKING CARES FOR FUCK'S SAKE???

The government of the UK strips people of their citizenship before they're targeted by American drones

Well, that makes it all better then!

    1. CE   12 years ago

Wouldn't it streamline the process more to tape the notice of lost citizenship on the nose of the drone?

      1. Mike Laursen   12 years ago

You've got what it takes to be a Top Man!

    2. JW   12 years ago

We see to it, old boy. You see, once we fill out the Deprivation of Citizenship to Her Majesty's Bosom form, 3-9-4-stroke-zed-zed, and once we have it approved by the chaps in the Ministry, we can give it the beans and bugger the ruddy tossers right up the arse with a bloody drone. Assuming we don't cock it up and end up slotting one of the fuzzy wuzzies like those wanker yanks tend to do. That'll be a right to-do.

  11. $park?   12 years ago

Dennis Tito, the world's first space tourist, wants to send an elderly couple on an all expenses paid (hopefully round) trip to Mars.

Elderly? Really? Because when he was being interviewed on the news this morning he was quite clear that the couple would need to be fairly young to be able to handle the physical requirements.

    1. Brett L   12 years ago

I heard married couple, not elderly.

      1. $park?   12 years ago

Yeah, that's he was saying this morning on the news.

    2. Alack   12 years ago

      ...physical requirements

    3. Pro Libertate   12 years ago

Look, the whole point of this isn't Mars. It's about zero gravity sex being beamed to Earth over the whole voyage.

Y'all thought I was kidding about Bigelow developing space-based whoretels, didn't you?

    4. Rich   12 years ago

I think he means that when they get back from Mars they'll be elderly.

      1. Brett L   12 years ago

What? 501 days. Its not even 2 years.

        1. Alack   12 years ago

Yeah, there's are summers that last nearly that long.

          1. Clich? Bandit   12 years ago

And they will actually be YOUNGER due to minute time dilation as a result of their relative velocity.

    Eewww!!

      Gee, thanks, TG!

      1. Rich   12 years ago

No, horses are rendered with onions.

    RIP train robber dude

On August 8 1963 Reynolds's highly-organised gang stopped the Glasgow to Euston Royal Mail train at Sears Crossing, Buckinghamshire, by tampering with the signals. They forced the driver to roll the train two miles to Bridego Bridge, where they unloaded mailbags containing more than ?2.5 million into waiting vans.

      They got it at Sears?

  14. Spoonman.   12 years ago

So I am new to following ZeroHedge...is the Dr Paul Krugman guy in the comments actually Pauly Krugnuts? He truly seems to believe millions will starve if the federal government shuts down.

    1. Alack   12 years ago

Probably a joke account. I'd ignore the commentariat as a whole as it's often weapons-grade stupid. The graphs are usually interesting, though.

      1. Spoonman.   12 years ago

Yeah, it's not quite YouTube level terrible, but it might be worse than the Houston Chronicle commentariat, which is something.

Speaking of YouTube, check out "Breaking the Barrier".

    2. NeonCat   12 years ago

Mainly, goldbugs and market doomers hang out there. The idiots who bought FAZ at $400.

  15. Brett L   12 years ago

Sloopy and Banjos start a trend. But failed to monetize fast enough. Unless they own Belly Ballot.

She won a contest through the website Belly Ballot, a company that allows family and friends to help select your baby's name.

Only Natasha is being paid $5,000 to let complete strangers make the choice for her.

    1. Rich   12 years ago

Users worldwide will be able to choose one girl name and one boy name each from the list of names provided

      Sheesh, *that's* no fun!

    2. db   12 years ago

I'm going to start Belly Bailout, a new web site that helps kids with ridiculous names gather the funds they need to file a legal change-of-name request.

      1. Brett L   12 years ago

Oh, here's the link to all of the DefCad files mentioned in the MLs. the first mirror is Kim Dotcom's new site, I think.

"The government of the UK strips people of their citizenship before they're targeted by American drones."

    I'm sure that's just a coincidence.

Because the Brits would never collaborate in something like that.

Why, that would make them America's lapdog!

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=weZoSu9053Q

If the British left starts screaming about not being Obama's lapdog, it's really gonna put American progs in a quandary. It'll be hard to keep advocating European style social democracy, if the social democrats in Europe are all denouncing Obama, the prog messiah.

What happens when you dare suggest not locking people up for victimless crimes in Canada

"I certainly have no sympathy for child molesters, but I do have some grave doubts about putting people in jail because of their taste of pictures," said Flanagan in the video.

Jezzie complains of gender wage gap in nursing, blatantly ignoring the article she links to, which says Landivar says, "Men are more likely to be in the subfields with higher earnings -- nurse practitioners and nurse anesthetists."

Commenter posts just this and more, gets told Exactly, Jezebel isnt really to blame tho. The study itself does little to explain anything (emphasis mine).

In the meantime, a commenter asks

I don't understand. Do employers sit down and look at names and dock pay if they are female? HOW DOES THIS HAPPEN? I mean the thought process would have to be right from the start. "Oh, Suzy started today, since she has a vagina, she is therefore not going to do work as well as someone with a penis, therefore she will only make 31.25 an hour instead of 32 an hour." I mean....how the fuck are employers getting away with this? HELP ME UNDERSTAND. I'm raging all the time about this. It's like, the most dumb shit EVER to me. I will never understand how this happens or why.

Several commenters actually mansplain it to her give reasonable responses.

TBH, I would dislike the elliptical and internet-speak stylings of Jezebel even if I agreed with their politics -- they (and the whole Gawkerverse) are fond of substituting tired and unfunny references or memes for actual humor or substantive commentary.

When I first read a Jezebel article, I sincerely thought that it was some sort of parody or meta-commentary on how superficial tabloid writing is. Honestly -- ponderous, academic feminist text by way of valley girl LOLspeak or Zappa-esque Jewish Princesses seems like the basis of an Onion article, not a successful website.

                Vagina-American (thanks, Jezebel!)

                "Bepenised" (thanks, Amanda Marcotte!)

Silly premise for a website = a goldmine for humor (provided your sense of humor is as warped, uncaring, and unforgiving as that of the average libertarian).

Washington University in St. Louis has suspended all Sigma Alpha Epsilon activities after its pledges ridiculed a group of black students as part of a scavenger hunt, because nothing establishes brotherhood more solidly than holding an impromptu slam poetry-style reading of Dr. Dre's "Bitches Ain't Shit" in front of a group of black students on campus ? and photographing them without their consent, no less.

Is this a thing now? Are people gonna be demanding no pictures in public? This isn't the first time I've seen it phrased this way.

    1. NeonCat   12 years ago

Thane, don't you realize that old white men are racists who have sex with people of color just to demean them?

Honestly, you just need to learn to imagine things in the worst possible light if you expect to understand progressives.

      1. Thane of Whiterun   12 years ago

Yes, as what some would deem a sufferer of "yellow fever" I am unfortunately well aware of this.

I am told I like Asian chicks because:
        1. I have a racist, ethnocentric view of them as "exotic"
        2. I'm too ugly to get a good white chick*
        3. I think white women are too feminist and if I marry an Asian, I can make her stay at home cooking and taking care of my half-breed children.**

And here I thought it had something to do with 75% of the girls I knew from age 11 until 18 being Asian (and probably 90% of the ones I actually interacted with), and that my preference was more akin to preferring blondes over brunettes (a preference that bewilders me, btw).

        * no racist implications there at all
** remind me of the progressive treatment of women in Asian cultures, again?

        1. NeonCat   12 years ago

          Re: "75% of girls?"

See, there's your problem, your life is racist. You should have made sure to have a more racial balanced adolescence.

Maybe you can blame your parents.

          1. Thane of Whiterun   12 years ago

The best part is that I went to an elementary school that was probably 97% white to a middle school that was about 30%.

        2. The Immaculate Trouser   12 years ago

I don't have an Asian fetish, but I really don't see the problem with #3 even if it were accurate as a motivation. When I decided to settle down, I looked for someone with traditional values who was smart, motivated to homeschool our kids, and who wanted to be a homemaker. In fact, I'd say that most male non-Americanized "brown people" (broadly speaking) have that goal in mind when looking for someone to stick with over the long haul. What is wrong with that, so long as your SO wants the same thing for her future?

          1. Thane of Whiterun   12 years ago

            If you're a feminist, it's a problem because your SO is a gender-traitor.

If you're most of the people actually making those arguments, you probably don't actually give a shit, it's just that you're a racist piece of dirt, usually one who resents that people of other races are taking "your" women.

          2. NeonCat   12 years ago

Obviously you were looking for a woman with false consciousness to continue your Patriarchal heteronormative ways.

All those "brown people" (racist) must be re-educated by morally superior feminists, unless that would conflict with their genuinely held native cultures, in which case the feminists must reach out to their sisters and try to evolve the narrative to a more enlightened and progressive vision which will permeate and uplift the native culture to one more in keeping with current thinking.

Many have a seething hatred of white people and a desire to end white rule in America. Then again, they are also a civilized race, one who has experienced just as we have black dysfunction. I predict that they will eventually come home once they get sick of Messican rule and racial preferences, but it will probably be too late.

"The GOP is actually the party of young white women. The majority voted for Romney."

Source? Romney won the overall young white vote 51-44, but I can't find the gender breakdown and I imagine more men voted for Romney than women. In any case, this is a little misleading, as it varies hugely by region. Romney may have won the young white vote by a solid margin in the South, for example, but what about the rest of the country?

"Many have a seething hatred of white people and a desire to end white rule in America."

Do you actually know any Asian people?

Also, what's with the use of the phrase "come home?" Asians, to my knowledge, have never voted GOP, and are trending Democrat. As much as Hispanics got demonized for voting Democrat, Asians did so in greater percentages in the last election.

          1. Calidissident   12 years ago

I was unaware of that. However, given the tremendous and rapid growth of the Asian American population, that doesn't mean. I don't think it's so much that Asians who voted for Bush I 20 years ago are now voting Democrat, but that their kids and newer immigrants are. California has about a third of the nation's Asian population, and young Asians are pretty solidly liberal (like most young Californians) and I don't see that changing.

            1. Hydronium Hydroxide   12 years ago

I do. Unleash a black or Mexican gang on these people and see how quickly they come home to white America (metaphorically, of course). "I do. Unleash a black or Mexican gang on these people and see how quickly they come home to white America (metaphorically, of course)."

Is it your belief that black and Mexican gangs are plotting an assault on Asian neighborhoods? And since when are Democratic politicians opposed to cracking down on minorities (Daleys, Bloomberg, etc)? And outside of the Northeastern states, crime rates between white and Latino men of the same age are almost identical.

"While I support the Violence Against Women Act because it's personal, I support the House amendment because it's principled," said Rep. Kevin Cramer (R-N.D.). "Our Constitution in its genius guarantees due process, due process to the accused. Innocent until proven guilty is the cornerstone of American justice? Please consider the damage we'll have done if a court overturns this act and it's protections because we wanted a good political slogan, rather than a good law."

Right. Respectfully, Rep. Cramer can stick that up his "principled" ass.

    Or perhaps Amanda Marcotte?

this belief that the government should be in the business of blaming victims for their abuse and trying to "fix" the relationships is what's driving so much Republican hostilty to VAWA.

Remember folks, only one of these contestants can walk away with the prize!

    1. Andrew S.   12 years ago

At least Marcotte made something of an effort to explain her position, even though it was pure idiocy. Jezebel pulled the "I'm right, they're wrong" ::drops the mic:: move.

            1. Irish   12 years ago

'One of the most destructive myths of modern times is that people of all races have the same average intelligence. It is widely accepted that genes account for much of the difference in intelligence between individuals, but many people still refuse to believe genes explain group differences in average intelligence. This blindness leads to futile attempts to eliminate "achievement gaps" between the races and leads whites to accept the view that if blacks and Hispanics are less successful than whites, it is because of white "racism."'

Yeah, what's racist about that? Fuck off, LR.

              1. Liberty Reloaded   12 years ago

It's racist to a liberal to point out the truth. Why, according to the libertarians, are the blacks such a mess on average? White racism? Okay, what do you plan to do about it? Nothing. Then they wonder why their are *no* black libertarians.

                1. Irish   12 years ago

Most black people vote Democrat due to the evils of identity politics, for the same reason most southern white protestants vote heavily Republican. It's because of the same mob politics that afflicts many white people.

So, no, actually I don't wonder why there are so few black libertarians. I already have a pretty good idea.

                  1. Coeus   12 years ago

I don't think it's actually disproportionate to demographics. There are disproportionately more black democrats, though.

                2. The Immaculate Trouser   12 years ago

Probably futile to acknowledge it, but LR:

Poor southern blacks and southern whites during Reconstruction and until quite recently (about the Roaring 20s) had virtually identical statistics vis a vis education, vagrancy, criminal rates, out of wedlock births, and all sorts of social maladies. For that matter, a number of "white" immigrant ethnicities had abysmal IQ #s for years. What evidence is there that a given "race" has a specific, fixed IQ or other index related to social maladies?

        2. Liberty Reloaded   12 years ago

If you mean the "republicans who want to reform our broken immigration system"... need to rerun the poll methinks.

    3. Brandon   12 years ago

So what you're saying is, you are just as much of an unprincipled whore as any democrat and believe decisions should be made entirely based on power. Not exactly surprising, but good to know.

      1. Liberty Reloaded   12 years ago

Tell that to the reasonoids next time they say that the republicans need to give amnesty to the illegals just so they can win elections.

        1. Irish   12 years ago

Except you're ignoring one thing: People don't know what the fuck their individual representative believes. When people think 'Republican' they, fairly or unfairly, think anti-immigration.

An individual Republican who is in favor of immigration reform could very well be suffering from bad branding related to other Republicans anti-immigration beliefs.

          1. Calidissident   12 years ago

At least on the presidential level, I think there's some evidence that the GOP candidate's views on immigration make a difference. Romney did worse among Hispanics (and much worse among Asians) than McCain did, even though conditions in general were more favorable to him. Bush did much better among Hispanics than any recent GOP candidate.

That makes sense. Imagine a person saying "I support you, you bunch of illegal immigrants!"

    Circumcision thread!!

Someone who's not so lucky? A pediatric nurse in Spokane, WA, who posted to Facebook:

Did my first circumcision on Friday..
    watch out boys...here I come

Seems like something relatively harmless to post to a Facebook wall that's only supposed to be seen by family and friends. The problem? Her page was set to public. Ruh roh. Anti-circumcision activists in the Facebook group "Cutting Culture" were not pleased. Okay, they're pissed. Comments range from "pervert ...so sick," to "how does she live with herself!?" It's harsh in there.

  34. Brett L   12 years ago

Just was talking to a MechE grad student about breaking up airflows to create less drag the other day. She had a cool idea for cars that would actively shoot small air puffs into the flow to cause turbulence along the front to cause good turbulence and lower the drag.

We're used to thinking of aerodynamics as a matter of sleekness, but a shark's skin suggests that the right kind of roughness is actually better. Sharks may be all clean lines and curves from afar, but their skin is composed of jagged scales covered with longitudinal ridges. Those tiny ridges are a big part of why sharks can so easily slice through the water.

Experiments suggest that the ridges cut down on the friction between the shark and the water, channeling the water and even speeding it along as it moves over the skin and preventing eddies, which contribute to drag.

    1. Brett L   12 years ago

Just ignore one of the "to cause turbulence"s

Didn't Mythbusters do a bit where a dirty car (and one with giant golf ball dimples, IIRC) got better gas mileage or something because of the disturbed airflow?

Hey Bob Woodward, Republicans 'Moved the Goalposts' on Sequestration in 2011

    1. Dunphy (the real one)   12 years ago

Woodward has more gravitas than probably any other journalist in DC. That's not going to stop the shenanigans since he came out and dared to confront the One Almighty(tm), but I'm curious HOW far his former fellow travelers will go. Will it be full-on Bernie Goldberg or Christopher Hitchens type ostracization or something less? I will predict Woodward sticking to his guns. I don't see him softening his narrative. Whether it's ego or integrit, imo he's not going to be bullied.

      1. Coeus   12 years ago

If that's true, then he's gonna get the full Hitchens treatment.

        1. Dunphy (the real one)   12 years ago

You would think Hitchens, as an avowed Socialist would have been ready for the collective response to his apostacy, but it was clear even he was taken by surprise at the unanimity of it , as well as the viciousness exhibited by the Nation (let's be honest) socialists after he came out daring to criticize islamofascist violence, etc.

I fucking dug hitchens and man did he handle that whole episode with class. Zero whining, full bore humorous vitriol.

How IS Woodward going to handle the ostracization? He's not going to be the Robert Redford modeled "golden boy" any longer.

  37. Coeus   12 years ago

Bloomberg business gets in trouble for using minorities on it's cover. But I thought the issue was under-representation?

    The money quote:

UPDATE, 5:22pm: Rachel Nagler, Head of Communications for the magazine, passes along a note from Andres Guzman, the illustrator: "The assignment was an illustration about housing. I simply drew the family like that because those are the kind of families I know. I am Latino and grew up around plenty of mixed families."

    1. Dunphy (the real one)   12 years ago

reminds me of when the libs accused the Seattle Times of racism for using a still from video taken during the Mardi Gras Riots. Same video showed vast majority black males involved in rioting despite the fact that Seattle has a relatively small percentage of black male residents. Iow, it was racist because it created the appearance that the vast majority of offenders were black males... even though it WAS true that the vast majority (90% according to post event investigation) of the rioters were black males. It was predominantly non-local gang members who had traveled to Seattle to riot and cause shit and subsequently did so.

The worthless cop-o-crat police chief of Seattle also never took responsibility for Chris Kime's death that was 100% the fault of police officer's following orders and refusing to engage the rioting crowd - ordered to stand on the corners and twiddle their thumbs. Engaging a rioting crowd may not be pretty but it's better than letting them riot and kill people, which is what the Seattle street cops were ORDERED to do by their admin.

Probably would have looked "racist" for cops to be swinging sticks at vast majority minority males, which is why, imo, they were ordered to stand down. Better to not look icky on CNN

Arbitrator reports for reinstatement of fired Omaha officers. EXCELLENT (!!!!) Use of Force analysis. For those who go "wtf" in UOF incidents, it's reports like this that help explain the nuances and what is needed to fire an officer for excessive force and still respect due process.

    1. Fatty Bolger   12 years ago

Yeah, I read it and looked at the video. She said she kicked him in the leg which is obvious bullshit from watching the video. The view of her leg is partially obstructed but you can see the guy's legs sticking out far from where she was kicking. The Chief of Police was absolutely right to fire her.

      1. Dunphy (the real one)   12 years ago

I give you props for doing what you did. I happen to disagree with you, but respect your opinion. I USUALLY agree with arbitrators from my experience, and I do in this case. Cheers
