Broke, Facing Declining Enrollment, Chicago May Close 129 Schools

Don't worry, the remainder will still suck

Chicago Public Schools administrators are considering closing more than 100 schools as the system faces declining enrollment and huge budget deficits.

Schools CEO Barbara Byrd-Bennett said on Wednesday that 129 schools are now on that target list–or about 19 percent of the schools in the system. School administrators spared another 201 schools after receiving community feedback.

CPS is targeting underutilized schools as a way to help close a huge $1 billion budget shortfall.
