Brickbat: Getting Shoed

Nate and Elizabeth Searcy say they were stunned when their 8-year-old daughter Shaylyn came home from school with her shoes and socks wrapped with duct tape. Elizabeth says school officials had complained that Shaylyn refused to put her shoes on, and she suspects that may have prompted someone to tape the girl's shoes on her. Officials with the Wayne Township, Indiana, school system are refusing to talk about the case.

This is a very sticky situation, and the girl will be stuck with this experience for the rest of her life. Hopefully those responsible won't duck out on the consequences for their actions.

The kid has Down Syndrome, and this sort of discipline isn't new in Indiana, apparently:

The struggles are not new to families of children with disabilities, nor are the troubling stories that have made headlines ? children improperly restrained in chairs, confined in "safe rooms," or even struck by school employees.

I wonder how much time the school would take to file a report with CPS if the girl had been sent to school rather than from school like that.

If the parents in that school (not just the parents of the kid in question) had guts, they'd protest collectively by all sending their kids to school in shoes with duct tape.

It's tape on shoes. I saw half of an 11u LL team with their cleats taped on one game last season.

And what would the parents have done if their precious snowflake had been sent home in the snow without the shoes she didn't want to wear?

It's a lawsuit win-win for them, no?

What are people supposed to do in that situation?
