White House officials confirm the administration is still committed to pushing for an "assault weapons" ban beyond any discussion of universal background checks.

They literally have nothing to lose.

    1. Archduke Pantsfan   12 years ago

      literally?

      1. Fist of Etiquette   12 years ago

Maybe I meant laterally. But they're not up for re-election ever again.

        1. Episiarch   12 years ago

...unless the 22nd Amendment gets repealed.

          1. Fist of Etiquette   12 years ago

PUT ON THE TIN FOIL BEFORE THEY STEAL YOUR THOUGHTS.

            1. Brett L   12 years ago

You idiot, the tin foil acts as an antenna so they CAN steal your thoughts. Only lining the inside of your skull with lead can save you!

              1. Groovus Maximus   12 years ago

                It worked for Juggernaut.

                1. Ted S.   12 years ago

                  Juggernaut failed.

          2. dave b.   12 years ago

            And in a strange coincidence...

            1. NeonCat   12 years ago

Pray he does not alter it any further.

            2. Isaac Bartram   12 years ago

              dave b.

              Big deal.

Serrano's efforts are just a parallel to what Republicans started in about 1985 when they decided that they had erred by pushing the 22nd Amendment through in the first place.

There is no such term limit in the original text of the COTUS. The 22nd Amendment was pushed through by postwar Republicans to stop another FDR.

              1. Isaac Bartram   12 years ago

IOW, attempting to pas an amendment, or repeal one for that matter, is a perfectly legal and reasonable action. OTOH, so is opposing it.

But it's not as if Serrano is engaging i some nefarious underhanded conspiracy here.

          3. Zeb   12 years ago

I seem to remember, not too long ago, a lot of Democrats worrying about that happening. I wonder what happened?

            1. Fist of Etiquette   12 years ago

And they will again. There are plenty more Bushes on deck.

              1. Isaac Bartram   12 years ago

The fact of the matter is that just about any party in control of the White House will support repeal and the party that doesn't, won't.

    2. Brendan   12 years ago

I don't believe any of this. They were pretty adamant that they hadn't made up their minds on any one thing and would listen to solutions. No way would they just push for a ban without a good reason, no way.

Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel wants to explore the possibility of privatizing Midway Airport.

Looks like Valerie Jarrett is getting into the airport business.

    1. Scarcity   12 years ago

Can we stop going along with calling these bastard monopoly-granting exercises "privatizing"?

The parking meters, Skyway, and potentially Midway are about as "private" as the USPS.

      1. Xenocles   12 years ago

How else can they blame the failure on privatization?

      2. nicole   12 years ago

Dude, don't talk about the parking meters. Fucking NAP.

    2. fish   12 years ago

If only she can bring her "Slumlord Millionare" management skills to airport administration?

  4. Archduke Pantsfan   12 years ago

This Seattle woman is going on a Starbucks diet

    1. Xenocles   12 years ago

They hardly even have actual food. I mean, I've had lattes and mistos for breakfast (heavy cream for the calories) but you kinda need vegetables sometime, I think.

      1. Episiarch   12 years ago

Starbucks is serving real food now; it's their new thing.

        1. Xenocles   12 years ago

          Fine, I'll read the FA.

          1. Xenocles   12 years ago

Had to click through to her blog, which is unreadable, but it seems like "only Starbucks" includes whatever grocery/prepared food items they're into now under another brand. So it's basically expensive fast food or something.

            1. Episiarch   12 years ago

I don't know, I never set foot inside of a Starbucks normally.

              1. Xenocles   12 years ago

  5. R C Dean   12 years ago

Picked up an extra mag and some pricy self-defense ammo for the new Sig today.

Fuck, if this "national conversation" over gun control doesn't wrap up soon, I'll be broke.

    Well-armed, but broke. Hmmm . . . .

    1. Groovus Maximus   12 years ago

Oh Counselor, before I hit the hay, I have a question WRT mental health databases:

As written, and I posted the relevant law language a couple of weeks ago, in ObamneyCare, how does a discrete mental health database not run afoul of the regs and comprehensive gun protections?

      1. R C Dean   12 years ago

I wrote up a quickie reply to that post.

As long as they had their "Too Crazy For Guns" database operated by a different agency than HHS, Obamacare doesn't affect it.

Some people have been hyperventilating that ObamaCare blocks any gun registration, but they're wrong. It applies only to HHS, and not to any other federal agency.

    2. Karl Hungus   12 years ago

I'm considering purchasing a Beretta 92F; hopefully I'll get around to it before I'm limited to the 10-rounders, like I was when I bought a Glock 17 in 1999.

    3. Professor Booty   12 years ago

Where did you find the mag, RC? I can't find mags for my 9mm 229 anywhere right now, with the exception of the crappy 10-round ones.

      1. fish   12 years ago

You should check with David Gregory not only can he get High Cap items he can get them with impunity!

Every future defendant facing charges of having an oversized magazine ought to cite this as precedent.

          (As if that will work.)

      2. R C Dean   12 years ago

They had these at the local gun store. They're not high-cap; this is my carry gun (P938), and I like/need/want/demand the ones with the little pinky extension.

    4. libertarian viking   12 years ago

RC; Looking at getting a Sig. Any suggestions? Anyone else?

      1. R C Dean   12 years ago

Depends on what you'll use it for (full-size? carry?) and what fits your hand/feels good.

The P938 was the smallest gun that wasn't too small, for my hand. I really like Mrs. Dean's little Kahr, but its just too small.

I went 9mm because (a) I'm already stocking the ammo, and trying to avoid caliber proliferation, and (b) .45s (my other option under (a)) are just too fat/bulky for me to want to carry.

      2. Karl Hungus   12 years ago

RC; Looking at getting a Sig. Any suggestions? Anyone else?

        If you're looking for a full-size, you can't go wrong with the P226. It's available in 9mm and .40S&W.

        1. SIV   12 years ago

And .357 Sig. Which is a stupid name for ammo. Get the 9mm.

Great pistol as far as full-size service pistols not invented by John Browning go.

      3. libertarian viking   12 years ago

Thanks to both of you. It's primarily for home, but maybe some carry.

        Any thoughts on the P250?

      1. A Serious Man   12 years ago

It can be funny at times, even inspired like that episode where Stewie abducts the cast of Star Trek: The Next Generation, but so many of the storylines are just terrible and too often MacFarlane will use Brian as a mouthpiece for his atheist and liberal views.

I can see why Groening and Judge really don't have respect for him.

        1. Killazontherun   12 years ago

Is it just me, but it seems that the Simpsons writers know exactly where that line is where they can get away with the smug certitude of New Republic reading liberals without making you click to another channel. Watching the episode last week about preppers, I'd often find my thumb hovering over the button and then something funny would happen to negate the nastiness of the previous moment.

        2. Jordan   12 years ago

Only the episodes that aired on Fox before it was cancelled are funny. Post-resurrection, the show has been complete shit.

          1. Stormy Dragon   12 years ago

It was worth it for the one gag in the first epsiode where Peter listed every single show Fox had cancelled during the three years between the first run and the second.

Democracy in action: White House petition to have Alabama QB AJ McCarron deported so Brent Musburger can move in on his girlfriend created.

If it gets 25K signatures he has to respond.

    1. db   12 years ago

Obama has been very selective in which petitions to which he "has to" respond. What make you think if serious issues go ignored, he'll respond to this?

Would you rather fight a horse-sized duck or a herd of duck-sized horses. Huge geek cred, here.

The item I produced on the subject would've been impossible without shark expert Ralph S. Collier, who graciously answered the question put to him by email. The experience taught me a valuable journalistic lesson: If you send animal researchers outlandish hypothetical questions that touch on their area of expertise, they'll respond generously, especially if inter-species combat is involved*.

    1. db   12 years ago

Well, a horse-sized duck is too terrifying to comprehend, and a duck-sized horse? Adorable!

      1. nicole   12 years ago

Seriously. Can I just have the duck-sized horses as pets? Why on earth do I have to fight them?

        1. Brett L   12 years ago

It was a Reddit question to the President. Also, I think duck-sized horses would be mean little shin biters and ankle kickers.

          1. db   12 years ago

I think it's from an Archer extra on the Season 2 bluray.

          2. Apatheist ?_??   12 years ago

It was a Reddit question to the President some staffer. It's asked in pretty much every AMA. The sad thing is that was one of the few questions that was answered. They answered a bunch of fluff and left and yet people were like "OMG he's soooo cool and in touch with us." Gary Johnson and Jill Stein answered a bunch of stuff in their (multiple) ones.

          3. Generic Stranger   12 years ago

Also, I think duck-sized horses would be mean little shin biters and ankle kickers.

Meh. Horse-sized horses will typically run from you, and they outweigh the typical human by a factor of 10. Duck-sized horses would flee in terror. Also, you could probably do them in with a single kick.

You know what they call a horse-sized duck? A fucking dinosaur.

To replace it, the robot has utility even though it doesn't look like the fighting kind. Could always turn on you, though. The helicopter looks to be a Hughes model, very popular and mobility is always key.

Nothing really matters anymore, we're all gonna be dead in a couple months.

Influenza has reached epidemic proportions in the United States, with 7.3 percent of deaths last week caused by pneumonia and the flu, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Friday.

That is above the epidemic threshold of 7.2 percent, CDC said. Nine of the 10 regions of the United States had "elevated" flu activity, confirming that seasonal flu has spread across the country and reached high levels several weeks before the usual time of late January or February.

The 1918 flu pandemic (January 1918 ? December 1920)was an unusually deadly influenza pandemic which infected 500 million people across the world, including remote Pacific islands and the arctic, and killed 20 to 50 million of them?1 to 3 percent of the world's population at the time?making it one of the deadliest natural disasters in human history

            1. Groovus Maximus   12 years ago

Immunologically speaking, Archduchy, that really is the best explanation we have. It still stumps immunologists and epidemiologists (that group is quite as difficult to stump). Spanish Flu was both exceptionally virulent and pathogenic, but I theorize also very fragile, as transmission was dependent on being in close quarters, like on ships and in battle trenches.

About the only thing I can think of is that particular strain was so successful, it killed off the most desirable victims, and was otherwise quarantined and did not incubate so the strain could not be passed on.

      2. NeonCat   12 years ago

Sometimes the flu really is a big, apocalyptic event. I don't know if this is one of those times, though. Having read about the (so-called) Spanish influenza pandemic of 1918-20, I don't think this is all that bad.

I genuinely fear the year we have one as bad as 1918-20. Hopefully medical science will prevent that, but you never know.

        1. A Serious Man   12 years ago

I get that we might have a year where a higher than average number of people get sick, but how many them will actually die that aren't elderly or otherwise with a compromised immune system?

          1. Zeb   12 years ago

If I recall correctly, the thing that made the 1918 flu so bad was that it killed a lot of otherwise healthy, younger people. And no one is sure why that was.

            1. Brett L   12 years ago

IIRC, a surprising number of older people (over 65 in 2009) were immune to the H1A3 (I think that was the designation) that was going around. This was the non-Swine Flu that was particularly dangerous to pregnant women and people 55-65. It turns out that most of the people born before 1947 had antibodies that were pretty good at recognizing and attacking it. I think the bad flu cases this year are H3N3, which is a type of flu A. I used to put together the reporting for this system for the stste of FL in a previous job.

            2. NeonCat   12 years ago

What I read, and I'm sure that the good Dr can correct me, is that some flu strains are so bad that the immune system basically adopts a scorched earth policy, literally killing off masses of lung cells to try to contain the virus. Younger people have a stronger immune response so they died more frequently.

              1. NeonCat   12 years ago

I believe this is the book I read. I thought it was excellent.

is that some flu strains are so bad that the immune system basically adopts a scorched earth policy, literally killing off masses of lung cells to try to contain the virus.

I must have had that a few months ago. 7 or 8 days of high temp and coughing. Then it turned into pneumonia and another week of the same. My body ate my muscle. I lost 2 inches off my chest. I'm just now fully recovering.

Tech journalists visit CES, stop by Indian restaurant and finds that the Mint Indian Bistro's Inferno Curry requires a signed waiver:

As you might expect with such warnings, the resulting curry was hot?very hot! The curry contains a special blend of ghost naga chilis, habeneros, seranos, jalepenos, and perhaps a dash or two of hellfire thrown in just for good measure. From the first bite it takes about five seconds for your taste buds screaming in agony to reach your ears. Then your whole mouth lights on fire, your eyes begin to water, and if you're eating on an empty stomach?well, may God have mercy on your soul. The initial shock isn't even the worst of it; I think the heat/pain peaks at about a minute after first contact, but it maintains that level for at least five minutes. And that's with something to help cool off your mouth, like the mango lassi we had?it's unfortunate that there was no way to hook a fire hose up to the mango lassi dispenser.

I should note that there's actually a challenge at the Mint Indian Bistro: if you can finish off the whole dish, you get your picture on the wall along with a $50 gift certificate for return visits.

    No dress codes for women.

When Stuyvesant says that women's dress and bodies are distraction in a learning environment, for example, what they're really saying is that they're distracting to male students. The default student we are concerned about?the student whose learning we want to ensure is protected?is male. Never mind how "distracting" it is to be pulled from class, humiliated, and made to change outfits?publicly degrading young women is small price to pay to make sure that a boy doesn't have to suffer through the momentary distraction of glancing at a girl's legs.

Someone's obviously never had to go to the chalkboard with an erection.

Cop shoots 3 people, gets 3 years probation and a $150 fine.

The case revolves around events that occurred in August 2011. On a Washington, D.C. street, Furr asked one of the transgender woman for sex for money. After the woman refused, Furr followed her to a CVS store and, when he was outside the store, pointed a gun at the transgender woman. After the officer drove away, the group of transgender woman and their male friends followed him, until Furr stopped his car and fired his gun at the car.

Apparently, black people are also invisible because there are at least 6 fast food places within a mile of my place and I only ever see 1 or 2 of them around.

      That's racist!

    3. Pro Libertate   12 years ago

That's such blatant bullshit. I'm not in a "black" neighborhood, and we're loaded with fast food. Like THE WHOLE FUCKING COUNTRY.

Racism must be mostly gone if people have to keep trying to invent it out of whole cloth.

    4. h3k86qc35923   12 years ago

That's not fair! White people deserve just as much access to fast food as black people.

    Goddamit.

The Lingerie Football League has announced that it will be rebranding itself to more accurately reflect its position as the "most successful women's sports league" by focusing on the actual athletics of it. The LFL will be changing its name to the Legends Football League and that players replace the bras, panties, and garter belts for more traditional uniforms and protective padding.

Billy Michael Martin, Lufkin's most treasured asset.

According to a report from KTRE 9, the ABC affiliate in Lufkin, police apprehended William "Billy" Michael Martin, 45, and charged him with three counts of burglary after he went into the East Texas Medical Center, stole master keys and stole photos from various offices as masturbatory aids. Oh, but the story gets so much more odd and interesting than just some weirdo jacking it in some hospital offices.
The police report that he also stole women's underwear from various laundromats in the area when the women weren't paying attention. At his home, police found stolen photos and porn next to stacks of ladies' undergarments.

Back at the hospital, he reportedly masturbated in the office of the director of nurses, where he stole two photos and left "a trail of semen" telling officers he had a thing for blonds though he denied masturbating in her office. No word on if he only kinda liked brunettes and redheads. He even walked into women's bathrooms and scared women in them. He did admit to jerking off in bathrooms at the hospital, so there's that.

But the best part had to come (pardon the pun) at his home, where...
