Eight Killed in Philippines Shooting Rampage
Gunman killed by police
A gunman killed at least seven people and wounded eight more in a Manila suburb on Friday, just days after the death of young girl--among the scores hit by bullets fired in celebration on New Year's Eve--triggered fresh calls for better gun control in the Philippines.
Deputy presidential spokesman Abigal Valte at a news briefing condemned the shooting in Kawit, a town in the Cavite province about 40 kilometers south of Manila.
"What we can say is that this incident will certainly fuel the efforts of the Philippine National Police in their drive against loose firearms," she said, referring to the police's long-running campaign to recover unregistered firearms.
