Join Us as Reason Tweets the Third-Party Presidential Debate. Now!
CSPAN is broadcasting a debate between the third-party candidates right now! Reason staff is live tweeting the whole shebang right now! The drinking game is simple: Drink at will, due to the fact that these people were excluded from the real debates.
The participants will include Libertarian Party candidate Gary Johnson, Green Party candidate Jill Stein, Constitution Party candidate Virgil Goode, and Justice Party candidate Rocky Anderson. The hour and half event is being moderated by former CNN anchor Larry King and Christina Tobin, founder and chair of the Free and Equal Elections Foundation.

Nice music.
It's already a clown show!
Like anyone watching this doesn't already believe this stuff...
Cannot be more clownish than Newt, Ricky Santorum, Michele the Stupid Whore, and Flava Cain.
That's not a very nice thing to say about the First Wookie Lady.
Left vs. Right? Really?
Smiles and bounces for Jill Stein. Shuffling papers for Gary Johnson. Coincidence or intentional?
What the fuck is the "Justice Party"? That's a new one to me.
Sounds like the name of a party Batman would belong to
That's the Justice League. We hate them.
Justice Party isn't the political arm of the Justice League?
Their platform is "I can shoot lasers from my eyes."
Gary Johnson just showed he's totally uninformed about the election reform being proposed. In a way I'm glad he make it not unanimous that they're against the transpartisan top 2 runoff system, but it grates that the Libertarian is ignorant of it.
BTW, it's significantly worse the way they have it in La. compared to the other states.
This debate is so well-publicized that C-SPAN apparently expects people to flip to it even though it's listed as "Public Affairs Programming" on the guide.
You forgot opening statements? The hell?
When the emcee is senile, what do you expect? Tell us where you can get 3 scoops of Carvel for $.15 .
Wow
I guess even Reasonites can't be bothered to care much about this
I thought it was great. Much better than the others.
"...wars for oil we don't need..."
Wait, is it wars we don't need, or oil? Because I'm pretty sure we need oil.
She means we don't need energy, because we're all sunflowers...
Sunflower oil
With a name like Rocky Anderson, how can he lose???
Emily should moderate the Reason debates. Just so we could, you know, look at her.
"Look at her" with admiration or to the point of making her be afraid for her self?
Yes
Why can't it be both?
I would just undress her with my eyes, like I already do now. Nothing creepy, nu-huh.
Economic Justice, Social Justice, Environmental Justice!
The Justice String!
A string that means ABSOLUTELY NOTHING.
Oh, wait. Now I see why nobody votes third party.
Come on, it's not like Obamney makes any sense
Well, we have two nutty socialists and a xenophobe up there on the stage. Even the guy I have already voted for isn't looking good on camera. Also this is clearly the slum of American political debates.
No I get what you're saying. Just saying the other two shouldn't be looked at as Very Serious People that they're perceived as
+1 to that.
Oh, you get it now?
Virgil Goode, please tell me more about how unemployed US citizens are lining up for the low paying farm labor jerbs that Mexicans are stealing.
And say it with a twang while you're at it!
Oh, wait...
Did you steal your jerb from a hard working Amurican commentor?
I don't steal jebz, I conquer them!
Bastard!
Let's end the wars, legalize Afghanistan and leave marijuana tomorrow! Let's bring the troops home tomorrow, not today!
Eliminate taxes! Yay!
I'm dumber than a 3rd party candidate for President. I've been live-commenting on the wrong thread.
It's okay, you're still accepted.
Wait, I'm a libertarian. I can't speak for everyone else.
Spelling capitalism with a K? You're obviously a commie infiltrating our ranks!
Are these guys dumber than Robamney?
Or just less polished? I'm writing this 12 hours later. Did not even know there was a debate.
Well, you can still save $12 billion, Virgil.
Larry King: "We're on drugs..."
Larry King: "We're on drugs. We're on drugs, we're on drugs."
No. Way.
I'm on drugs!
This Gary Johnson is so much better than the one in the Republican debates earlier this year.
I'm at work, I can't watch. Please tell me this wasn't a complete farce
Well, the administration is screwy, but the candidates aren't agreeing on every single issue.
Ok, you got yourself a deal.
Things I don't want my doctor to say:
"So, as a medical doctor" with their voice trailing upward.
You had me worried for a second there, Jill.
marijuana is no way more dangerous than alcohol! Sure, alcohol can lead to spontaneous human combustion and early corrosion of engine parts, but kids drink ethanol, why not drive their cars with marijuana?
Marijuana is dangerous because it is illegal. It's not dangerous at all!
Marijuana is dangerous because if you grow or possess it, thugs with rifles will knock down your door, shoot your dog and lock you up, provided you survive the encounter.
Energy independence possibility?
Jill Stein is totally going to spell it Presydent when she wins.
The Green Party should have gone with Rosanne.
Ok, so the discussion is focused on drugs now... Why is that????
Relate to half of the audience, perhaps?
Probably because it's the only issue they don't all agree on.
Gary Johnson said "disparagingly" instead of "disproportionately". Heh. Heh heh.
Twang-man is about to speak! Shhhh!
I am not for legalizing "dregs", if you want drugs I don't sell 'em!
Virgil Goode: "Vote for [Gary Johnson]. Don't vote for me"
I think I can support that statement.
Losers.
What can I say, they are running for president?
Are they? Haha.
Yeah that's going to be a problem. It's gonna be a problem for them. This a clear violation of your rights as a consumer. It's an infringement on your constitutional rights. It's outrageous, egregious, preposterous.
We have to stop with the drone strikes! Those only live for 28 seconds after copulation anyway!
I want to cut the budget and bring the troops home to make them hold up solar panels on their heads and restart the "green economy"! Jebz!
Wait a minute -- why does Dr. Stein say she disagrees with Mr. Goode on military policy? What he say that she contradcited?
His plan doesn't go too far enough.
Are these microphones configured in a way to make all of their voices sound slightly hoarse?
That's not because of the microphones... They're all on drugs.
Jill Stein: "Dropping bombs on weddings and funerals ... is not a good way to win hearts and minds in the Middle East."
Ice Cube: "You betta check yo' self before yo wreck yoself, cuz I'm bad for yo health. I come real stealth, dropping bombs on yo moms. Fuck car alarms!"
All four of these people seem more rational and reasonable than Barry or Mittens.
At least some of their diatribes are more entertaining.
Yes, all 4 have at least said 1 or 2 things that I find agreeable. I don't know that I could say the same for Baramny.
That's what I meant. Except Johnson. I've agreed with almost everything he has said.
These guys are as bad as the majors in bending the rules, viz. phony rebuttals.
What exactly are the policy differences between the Green and Justice Parties? It seems like they advocate the same things across the board
If someone just judged by this "debate" so far, it'd seem like all 4 agree on everything except for 1 dissent about drugs.
No, Virgil Goode dislikes foreigners, though he doesn't want to go abroad to fight them.
I think it's just because he's lazy. If he were a REAL immigrant-fighter, he'd be all for drone striking random countries.
You have to love progressives. They can't even combine their votes on ONE fringe party. They have to split them into two to get that double dose of marginalization.
True progressives would rather feel marginalized (even if by their own creation) than actually do anything of value.
I think the regular dems are the "progressives". Not that that's a good thing or that it will lead to any progress.
Not sure what to call the far-left fringe eco-socialists. Oh wait, that will work.
F3ES, maybe for short.
"Are you asking me if I want to talk? Because I want to talk."
They overwhelmingly agree on everything, so they say they're "rebutting" when they're just chiming in to get more time.
So: this will never end, will it?
Free education?
GI Bill ? Free College
At Navy we used to joke that we were being given a $200,000 scholarship up our asses one nickel at a time. I'm sure a similar case could be made for the GI bills.
Does that mean I have double (soon to be triple) economic security?
Simple idea: only give federal loans to kids with majors that actually make money.
And how does one determine what majors make money? For example, a degree in Acting could net one multi-millions if he or she gets that big break.
How many waiters are there for each superstar? I think a weighted average is in order.
Oooh! Math!
Well, I'm an engineering student, so that's easy(ish) for me to say.
But honestly, just privatize higher education and eliminate ALL the Federal Student Loans, and the market will work itself out.
This I agree with. No need for social engineering by Pell Grant. The worst thing to happen to the university is its transformation into a mere vocational training center for the military-industrial complex.
Well, there go my job prospects...
You would think that those going into fields with more and better paying jobs would get more loans and a lower rate. Too bad, we may never live to see that experiment. Or maybe if we look at the way it worked in the 50's, we might see examples? Have never seen this data.
It's called statistics.
That's my idea. You stole it.
Darn right I did!
Johnson needed only to say TANSTAAFL as his rebuttal.
I'm just glad someone said level playing field while asking for less government.
Damn. Larry King seems really bored.
He's constipated.
My stream keeps buffering, it's as if I'm watching this on RealPlayer
C-Span isn't buffering.
C-Span's feed was also closer to real time than the YouTube version.
I guess I'm a stale genius of a previous generation.
More people are getting college education than ever before. Look at where our economy and the country is at. I'm not saying the former has caused the latter, but it does seem to indicate that perhaps throwing money at education and people going to college (and with disregard to what they study) isn't the cure-all some people make it out to be
When I first read Vonnegut's Player Piano, I laughed at the character with the Ph.D in Real Estate because it was so absurd.
How prescient Vonnegut was.
"We're on the road to totalitarianism."
Ayn beat you to that claim by about 5 decades.
HA! Hayek was saying it 7 decades ago.
Garrett Quinn: "I believe Jill Stein was involved in debate club or something at Harvard."
One sentence answer. What!?!?!
Ha, "my hero, Ron Paul." Nicely done.
Well, there are a lot of Ron Paul fans there.
Garframmitz, Bee Tagger...
How did Obama get 16 liberty torches? I also disagree with Johnson on one thing: the ACLU doesn't care about two of the first 10 amendments. I think you guys can guess which two I'm talking about
+210
3rd and 9th?
Yeah they don't care about the troops I'm forced to quarter! Bastards!
here's a good question: does the 3rd amendment apply to homes of noncitizens abroad? I think it does, and we have probably violated the 3rd amendment.
Is there an amendment the government HASN'T violated? Even the 3rd got violated domestically; see Engblom v. Carey
2nd and 7th?
Got the first one. The second is the 10th
This is going to turn into a "Who's on first?" routine, isn't it?
Sitting politicians hate term limits, so explain to me how in the world they could be bad?
I wouldn't mind seeing a modern-day cursus honorum.
Me, either, provided it's up and out.
In that system, Obama wouldn't even be in the Senate.
Well, doesn't California have them? Doesn't seem to have helped them.
Well, it's only one measure. When the people coming after are the same as the people they're replacing, it won't make as much of a difference.
Well, doesn't California have them? Doesn't seem to have helped them.
Yeah, they've been a disaster in California.
Term limits, Gary? You couldn't think of anything better?
Balanced budget amendment maybe?
Maybe something with regard to due process, private property, or contracts, say?
To be fair, we're already supposed to have amendments that protect due process and private property
Clearly we need to pass them again, using clearer language.
Oh I agree
Except for balanced budget, we already have had amendments on due process, private property etc.
WTFF?
Tucille: No, term limits aren't a "silver bullet". They're a normal jacketed hollow point 185grain .45 slug. They kill sitting politicians just fine.
Corpurashuns STOLE MY PERSONHOOD!
They took pictures of you?
Corporations touched my personhood.
Show us on the doll...
Show us on the Constitution where the corporation touched you.
Well that was over fast.
Immigration policy in your closing statement. Relevance right there.
Yeah, it's all the big evil corporations the poor innocent politicians who would only want to do the right thing if it wasn't for the big businesses supporting them. And we all know corporations giving money to a candidate makes people vote for them.
How about an Amendment that says that Congress doesn't have any powers that are not specifically assigned to it in the Constitution!
There already is one? Has anybody told Congress about that?
would have been good. But the obvious answer was "balanced budget amendment". Can't believe he missed it. Not too bright, this Gary Johnson.
I have boycotted this debate due to lack of VERMIN SUPREME
He's a Democrat, isn't he?
This election cycle he his.
He got way more NH Primary votes than GayJay. Vermin is a more serious candidate.
Is it just me or does Gary Johnson seem kinda .... er... GAY.
Seriously, my gaydar is on full blare right now. How come I didn't notice this before?
It's just you.
NTTAWWT and Just You.
Gay Jay.
I don't see it. Although, by the way he moves, I've suspected early Parkinson's for a while. I hope I'm wrong about that.
His movements are somewhat jerky and disjointed, but I don't see the hallmark shuffling gait. Yet.
What about Huntington's?
Considered it. It would explain his pallor, but he has been tan for quite a quite (hence the wrinkly, leathery skin for his age.)
Otherwise, pseudo-Parkinson's would fit. As would possibly mild tardive dyskinesia, but I would have to see a health HX (his RX HX specifically) on that one.
Surely it's Wilson's.
Gotta be lupus. It's always lupus, right?
It's Never Lupus!
The symptom's of untreated Wilson's are more similar to schizophrenia. Also, I've never noticed any Keyser-Fleischer rings.
Can tardive dyskinesia develop organically? I've only ever seen it as an extrapyramidal side effect of antipsychotics.
Not from what I've read. Etiology, as spotty as it is, is extrapyrimdal of anti-psychs and Reglan and Deglan are thought to be culprits. You can throw tardive dystonia into the mix.
Most of the other similiar conditions, like akathesia and myoclonus, are hereditary.
Maybe it's just the way he was hunching over the microphone. Maybe he should think of adjusting it's height so he doesn't have to bend down a bit to speak into it.
No, I have seen him when he speaks sans mic. Mensan is right, his movements are somewhat exaggerated.
Tomorrow is United Nations Day!
I'm so not excited!
Today was Mole Day.
Black armbands all around.
Should be like a wake.
Great closing statement from GJ. All in all, impressive performance.
I thought his last few lines were really strong. Too bad so few people are going to see it
I think Gary lost, sadly. The candidates responses were all identical, EXCEPT on education.
And he didn't rebut Jill by saying "So you want to steal money from the poor through inflation and bail out college professors who are assuredly part of the 1%". I am disappoint.
Outright saying it's stealing won't go over too well with anyone not already supporting GJ, I think. Sometimes a more tactful, yet still honest, approach is needed. I actually thought GJ won, he seemed to get the loudest and most frequent applause.
College professors part of the 1% ??
Not likely, unless a married couple are both college professors, have no kids and are either in their 60's and/or at some pretty good institutions.
At my university, very few professors make over 100K, unless they are in law or (business?!!?) for some reason. The science professors are sadly stuck in the same college with humanities. (Sad only because in a college of science the pay might be better).
Professors at medium size universities often start at 40-50K with a PhD and a postdoc and so are already in their 30's.
Professor is not a high paying position for the most part. And this whole 1% argument is stupid as many who do make it into the 1% do so only as they get older. Do we want to take money away from old people?
"Draconian" Drink (week old fruit juice)!
Red Jill gives a shoutout to us non-voters. That's a constuency that can't get you elected.
Larry King is bored again. I think he's pissed he didn't get invited to host one of the "real" debates.
"Bought and paid for politicians"
Holy shit! Rocky Anderson is Anonbot!
That would explain a lot...
The accent alone, with phonetic spelling, would explain Anon-Bot's free form grammar and spelling.
It MAkes sEnSe wheen YOU thinK About iT! LOL!
Money is the root of all evil. Poisonous, alluring, money! Damn her black, viperous heart.
"WPA-like initiative."
How about some jobs?
Is Larry King going to throw his hat in the ring?
He just called them crazy old men...so yes.
Larry King: Thank you for your noble doomed effort. I've enjoyed watching your vain, pathetic attempts at relevance.
+1
Bad Don Quixotes reference or worst Don Quixotes reference?
Bad.
Just heard Rocky talk about the worst crisis facing planet earth.... climate change.
Nuclear holocaust, step aside.
That warm day in February is $@?#ing dangerous!
Back to the clown show...
Did larry invite his teenage granddaughter to co-host?
Giggles, "wow," close enough.
One crowd member managed to figure out the cameras were behind the audience and turned their poster board around.
So is there an election on or something?
No. Just a referendum on if Bush gets another round of plastic surgery.
*Whether
Hmm? Election? I thought you said "erection." I have read periodically on Reason about erecting the johnson someone named Gary. I wasn't paying attention. I am trying to decide if I want pepperoni or mushrooms.
Pepperoni has my vote!
When I was a boy they told me anyone could run for president, and I just want to thank all of you for proving it tonight.
I worked with Jim Tobin decades ago on tax y other reforms.
OMG! tHIS is SO COOOL!!!!111111!!!!! Wowo..... OMG!!! *giggle* .... wow!!!
You hear that, Reason? You thought you were done live tweeting for the year, but no, see you next Tuesday!
Huh. I didn't think "wow" existed in this digital age.
You can't say omg in front of that sized audience...or can you?
I meant the wow in the closing theme music...like it was on an analog tape that was having a little speed trouble.
Didn't hear it.
Groovy!
... Hobbit
Who else are you all going to vote for? I'm thinking Rocky or Jill.
Die, foul spawn of Marx.
Some clarification is in order:
Vote for who will be in the Free and Equal runoff debate next Tuesday, in addition to Gary Johnson.
If you vote for them in the general I will come kill you with a spork.
I find it ironic that Christina Tobin was chair of a committee called "stop top two"... And now this? I'm abstaining on principle.
I'm gonna go with Rocky. I liked him the second best.
Reminds me of when Howard Stern briefly threw his name into the NY election.
Thanks to me.
Well, it wasn't me who got him to decide to run, but it was me who got him to seek the LP nomination -- after I and some others had been working on him for almost a decade.
Larry King: Where da bitches at?
Larry is cranky; he need a nap and some warm milk spiked with scotch. And a w00bie, too.
Saw Atlas Shrugged II. Liked it. Of course I liked the first one. I don't consider myself a Randian or Objectivist (not that her philosophy bothers me) but I am a hardcore free-marketeer and seeing positive representations of such folks is enjoyable. Especially as it angers the collectivists among us.
Thought that changing the actors would be a problem, but it wasn't. I liked the different takes on the characters.
Maybe every sequel of every movie should change the actors.
There was some crap CGI but the real sets were nicely done and the effects of the destruction of Taggert Tunnel was okay but made great by the fact that Kip Chalmers was vaporized in the explosion.
Also the woman who played Dagny is no twig. Baby got some handholds on her. And a nice sized ass that looks good in jeans.
Esai Morales did a good job as Francisco but in this case I preferred the first actor's take.
I liked Esai Morales better, and I thought Taylor Schilling was a better Dagny, but that's a matter of taste.
We must now fight to the death. That's how Objectivision works, right?
That's what Bioshock has taught me.
Also the woman who played Dagny is no twig. Baby got some handholds on her. And a nice sized ass that looks good in jeans.
I'm intrigued. I must watch this "Atlas Shrugged" thing of which you speak. Freedom, liberty, blah blah blah, girl got a nice ass? I'm there.
So, when do we get the CNN insta-poll? I want to find out who won.
I hate to let you down, but I don't have the constitution to watch Maddow on Letterman this time.
I mean, how frigging bad has it gotten? Really. When you got Leno shilling for Obama this week, Letterman pulling in the pseudo intellectual Dem kissers, and 80% of the establishment press covering for this guy, and he's still in a dogfight?!!! And as the incumbent, to boot!
I had my bets on re-election and I still stand by it. But the frenetic and fanatical fear is running hard up these leftists legs. Uncanny. Never thought they'd have to fight so badly for it.
Letterman has the nerve to call himself an independent.
Letterman is independent like Bill Maher is libertarian.
Make no mistake, Letterman claims "independent" because those guys don't take strong political positions by practice. If you think he's going to hand one fucking viewer to Leno...
Voted in their little poll for the runoff:
Johnson
Stein
Anderson
Goode
If there is anyone whom I have not offended, please let me know immediately.
Sally Townsend of Brisbane, Ca.
It's disturbing a commie soc promising free shit would poll so well.
I went:
Johnson
Anderson
Goode
Stein
Are you voting strategically to try to get the weakest opponent for the one you most want?
Who, me? No, I just found Anderson interesting, and I think Stein's actually the worst candidate out of the four.
Isn't it hilarious how they oppose top 2 runoff systems but are running one?
Sounds like that needs to be re tweeted at once!
http://www.Anon-Whiz.tk
thanx man

One hour we do not speak. I thought a lot. Finally, still feel like saying it's the fox is not possible, we Cheap Football Cleats can not find evidence that the gray-haired woman does not show fox, but no evidence, just to prove that the fox can transform himself into a cheap ugg boots for women white-haired woman. And to compare with each other, or scientific concepts prevail.
