Brickbat: Unbroken Window
It was a warm day, so Tara Ludvigson left the windows down on her vehicle when she parked it outside her Nanaimo, Canada, workplace. Later that day, a mountie came in and handed her an $81 ticket for leaving the car "unsecured." After she complained, the officer reduced the ticket to a warning.

Farce!!
I passed up my chance to be farcical and went for another cup of coffee. Darn.
May the Farce be with you, Your Suthenship.
It's good to see LEO north of the border have the same mindset as those in the States. If there is no criminal around to relieve ones authority boner, any civilian will do.
It's a medical care issue. A state of Priapism for long periods of time can dangerous!
Is that a baton in your pocket or are you just happy to have figured something to charge me with?
"He told me ignorance of the law is not an excuse."
'"But, flagrant abuse of it is!" He also told me before shooting out one of my tires."
"I assure you, this hurts me way more than it hurts you, ma'am. Have a nice day."
They're like LEO Jesuses, taking on the world's pain like that.
"A motor vehicle must be equipped with a lock or other device to prevent the unauthorized use of the motor vehicle."
I think a case could be made that the ignition lock met this criteria.

Not if I decided to use it as a place to meet my mistress.
Virginia passed a law having to do with using a firearm in a drug crime. Everybody thinks drug-related killings and robberies, right? First use was on a guy who was lured into trading a gun for drugs.
The car wants to look good while it's sitting there. Leaving the windows up means risking a ticket for leaving a car "insecure."
It is the job of the police to protect individuals from higher insurance premiums by fining them.
It's not a fine, it's penalty. Or arguably, a stupidity tax. Hence, it's penaltax.
This stuff is just awful. I hear radio ads the gist of which is that if you don't lock your car *every* time you leave it, then you're just *asking* for it to be stolen. But can I booby trap that clunker? ***John Belushi voice*** NOOOOO!!
I never lock my car and I usually leave the windows open in the summer. If someone wants to steal some of the garbage I keep in there, they can have at it. I'd much rather that than have someone break the window.
