Houston Public Schools Adopt Charter School Approaches
Techniques pioneered at independently operated schools drive the public schools to improve
Teachers at seven secondary schools of the Houston Independent School District this fall are using successful strategies developed by charter schools to improve their ability to deliver instruction.
The two-year pilot program is currently active at Edison Fleming Grady Hartman McReynolds Pin Oak and Revere middle schools.
It is based on the 49 techniques espoused by veteran educator Doug Lemov in his book "Teach Like a Champion." Lemov will visit Houston later this month to provide additional training to participating schools on eight other techniques.
