Residents of one Hillsboro, Oregon, neighborhood are angry after city workers sprayed a honeybee hive, killing many of the bees. City officials say they thought the bees were yellow jackets and were a danger to people walking on a nearby sidewalk.

The city has vermin killers. Their job is to kill things - not do dna testing to see if the critters are cuddly pandas or rabid grizzlies.
Things must die - public employees must be paid - nothing else happened.

    I don't really want to beelabor the point, but really, compared to drones dropping bombs indiscriminately and swarms of police officers prosecuting victimless crimes, who gives a shit about this? Maybe I'm not meshing with the hive mind on this one, but this doesn't really trip my "abuse of power" antenna.

Erm, since when do wasps (which Yellow Jackets are) live in hives? They have nests, which don't really look like beehives at all.

That said, does it really matter? Bees are the jerks that wasps are, but they can still sting...

  Yellow jackets generally make their nests undergraound, at least here in the South. It's really not that hard to tell them from bees.
