In Politics, Surrender to the Higher Power of Your Choice
I guess I'm not a higher power kind of guy, and it doesn't matter to me who or what that higher power is. As much as I respect whatever others believe when they scrupulously apply it to their own lives, I've been consistently creeped out over the years by those who insist I bow down to some all-powerful supernatural being they claim is watching over us (even on the crapper?) as well as by those who insist that I tug my forelock to the all-powerful state that's watching out for us (even on the crapper?). My natural reaction is to insist that people should keep their prurient higher powers to themselves. I've found the last two weeks … challenging.
As much as is made of the vast cultural divide that supposedly separates the Republicans in Tampa from the Democrats in Charlotte, I've seen little practical difference. Yes, the Republicans opened their convention with a Sikh-led prayer and closed with a blessing by a Catholic Cardinal and included a heavy sprinkling of the Mormon faith throughout. By contrast, the Democrats inserted a bit of God-bothering in their platform only clumsily and at President Obama's insistence. But that's understandable — they'd already invoked their higher power in the much-discussed video asserting, "the government is the only thing that we all belong to." That's a faith reasserted time and again in speeches that made the DNC sound, just a bit, like a public-benefits counseling session.
As I mentioned above, I wouldn't care one way or another about the beliefs of the speakers at these expensive demonstrations of political mutual-stroking if they were to confine themselves to living by the One True Faith on their own, while allowing those of us of differing views, or none at all, to happily marinate in the wages of our heresy. But there's no such luck, of course. The prevailing attitude in both major parties is that no good idea should go unlegislated.
As Republican nag Rick Santorum once scolded, "This idea that people should be left alone, be able to do whatever they want to do … that we shouldn't get involved in the bedroom, we shouldn't get involved in cultural issues … that is not how traditional conservatives view the world."
On the other side of the political divide, professional finger-wagger Elizabeth Warren claimed us all on behalf of the state-led Borg when she said, "You built a factory out there? Good for you — but I want to be clear: You moved your goods to market on the roads the rest of us paid for; you hired workers the rest of us paid to educate; you were safe in your factory because of police forces and fire forces that the rest of us paid for."
Come November, the two major parties may be offering us a sort-of choice. But no matter how the election falls out, we'll still be expected to submit to a higher power.

This is it. That's it. This is the modern Democratic party.
The Democratic party I grew up with (when I was a youngster) decried the government dictating what you do with your own body, abortion, of course, being one of the core issues.
Fast forward to Democrats of today: What you do with your body is not your business, but very much the government's business.
I have only one question. How long do you think abortion will be left untouched as long as Democrats continue to utterly reneg on this proposition that your body is your business?

Depends on what wing ends up dominating. If it is the environmentalist wing then abortions will be forced.
It is also possible that a crony type wing to emerge as a force and they might prohibit abortions so new peasants can fill the ranks of our aging population...but i see this as highly unlikely.
Also the narrative seems so ingrained that it is possible for abortion choice becoming the only right retained after all the others are taken away....this seems to be exactly what is happening in the above video.

I've long thought that the SoCons are a more natural fit with the socialist left.
Wow great video.
How anybody can watch these conventions and then vote for either one of them is beyond me.
That's because you don't want to control other people's behavior. Unfortunately, you, and me, and others like that are very rare.
what I've learned from Dems is that pro-choice stops once a birth occurs. Then all choice is to be made by govt.
I learned that the party claiming the opposition has a war on women is where genuine abusers - Clinton, Edwards, the Kennedys - are found. But they support abortion, so it's all good.
I've learned that professionals face majority opposition in Congress and still do shit they want to do. Amateurs create a talking point about the mean kids.
And I've learned that the belief both parties are full of shit is growing fast. Support for Romney is based on beating Obama; supporter for Obama is cult-like.
Support for Romney is based on beating Obama; supporter for Obama is cult-like.
Which would be kind of nice if Romney wins. I kind of like a president who is universally despised rather then adored by 50%. It just feels right.
Of course it will not stop the government from being just as horrible.
"So you're pro-choice?"
"I'm pro-intervention."
Dear. Fucking. Christ. My jaw literally dropped. Urge to kill, rising.
Shit, she was the only honest one there. The other ones pissed me off more.
Outstanding.
That video is the perfect counterpart to the Daily Show's RNC bit about "right to choose"

"I am pro choice about everything...everything..but they should be informed choices and government has a role in that."
Translation; Government should make your choices for you.
Dear fucking God, does that moron even hear herself? That truly is a convention of dunces. DNC = Dunce's National Convention.
Most of this afternoon I have played these videos ( the Jon Stewart ones and the Reason ones ) interviewing convention attendees. I just showed her this one and she finally broke and commented.
"Those are actors. That cant be real. Those are actors just saying that stuff"
I am tempted to think she is right. Really, can anyone be that stupid?

You moved your goods to market on the roads the rest of us paid for; you hired workers the rest of us paid to educate; you were safe in your factory because of police forces and fire forces that the rest of us paid for.
The rest of us? Doesn't she think the business owners are a big part of those paying for infrastructure projects?
And at a Democratic convention, a lot of the people there are net tax recipients, not payers, if they work for the government on any level.
Doesn't she think the business owners are a big part of those paying for infrastructure projects?
Nope.
Rich business owners are freeloading off the parasitism of the poor...or something.
Great video. As my wife often says, "The whole world should be run by a 5-person committee -- so long as I'm on the committee."
If it is the environmentalist wing then abortions will be forced.
But only for those who spout heresy ... but then, retroactively --

Okay J.D., here's the difference between the Supreme Being and the State: the Supreme Being is perfectly fine letting you get on with your life. Unless you're one of those few hundred that get zapped by lightning each year for unspecified sins, the Supreme Being is all hunky dory with you doing whatever. His self-appointed spokesmen may have a different take on it, but His Supremeship could care less what you do on the crapper.
The State on the other hand is very much concerned about the size of your soft drink, the caffeine content of your malted beverage, how many digits are in your bank balance, and the gallons-per-flush rating of the crapper you're sitting on.
I've yet to see Scripture that tells one how much water their crapper can flush, their shower can spray and what size drink caused you to seek the toilet in the first place.
I'm pretty sure you can find Scripture telling you when you can eat, what days you can work, and a whole bunch of other ridiculous shit.
JD, old friend, the Lord ESPECIALLY watches over us in the crapper. God bless us, everyone.
This is one of the best, and most depressing Reason videos I've seen all week.
We are so fucking doomed.
