CHARLOTTE - The Democratic National Convention doesn't kick off until tomorrow but that doesn't mean today is devoid of action.

The various caucuses in the DNC are meeting at the Charlotte Convention Center while most delegates will explore Carolina Fest, a carnival of sorts celebrating North Carolina culture.

Then there are the parties put on by the delegations, media outlets, and corporate sponsors to fill up the evening.

Follow Reason's team in Charlotte on Twitter for live up-to-the-minute coverage: Matt Welch, Garrett Quinn, Peter Suderman, Paul Detrick, and Zach Weissmueller.

Wow. The logo for the DNC is just an ad for the Obama "brand". Cult of personality, much?!?!

    Oh, and first!

I thought that was some variation of the square that imprisoned General Zod and sent him through space for thousands of years.

      1. EDG reppin' LBC   13 years ago

        We should be so lucky.

    "The Jacket" not attending?

the Charlotte Convention Center while most delegates will explore Carolina Fest

I doubt if the progressive voter is going to be thrilled when the appointed cultural director remarks, 'North Carolina has the highest density of box retail outlets than any region outside of China, whew hoo!'

Besides, likely not even true when you cut West Texas off from the East, or discount the non coastal and farming lands of Cali. Who makes up these bogus stats, anyway?

  5. sage   13 years ago

This is kind of funny. Obama takes his rightful place on Mount Rushmore (hope this works):

most delegates will explore Carolina Fest, a carnival of sorts celebrating North Carolina culture.

For these people, I imagine it will be like attending the circus sideshow. "Ooooohhhh! Look at the native flyover country-er. Oh, look, he can speak, though I'm not sure it's English."

    1. Episiarch   13 years ago

I used to go to camp in North Carolina. One year, I took the train down with my mother to get dropped off. The train stop was in north South Carolina, and the camp was in south North Carolina. We took a taxi from the train to the camp. The taxi driver made small talk with us during the ride, and I swear we couldn't understand most of what he said, his accent was so strong.

That's my obligatory asshole Yankee story of the day.

"Ooooohhhh! Look at the native flyover country-er.

North Carolina moved from the East Coast to the Mid-West? When did that happen?

Besides, as an upper-middle-class New Englander, I can assure you that the proper slur is "Southerner", which refers to anyone south of New York City. An area which is vast, undeveloped wasteland populated by inbred, cannibal rapists.

      1. Episiarch   13 years ago

Hey, North Jersey also counts as "not the south". South Jersey, on the other hand...

        1. Heroic Mulatto   13 years ago

North Jersey is a NYC enclave, that was a given.

          1. Episiarch   13 years ago

            Also, Philadelphia. But NOTHING ELSE.

I've tried to explain to people from Wisconsin and Michigan how they are Southerners, and they just don't get it. New England is a separate country.

            1. geo1113   13 years ago

Plenty of "southerners" in Maine and New Hampshire.

              1. Heroic Mulatto   13 years ago

Yeah, they're called "Southies" and originally hail from Boston.

              2. BakedPenguin   13 years ago

No, they're hicks, but Yankee hicks.

                1. Heroic Mulatto   13 years ago

Ok. Some people are confused, so I'll clarify proper usage:

                  Southerner = inbred cannibal rapist
                  Hillbilly = inbred rapist cannibal
                  Yokel = rapist inbred cannibal
Hick = rapist of inbred cannibals
Swamp Yankee = cannibal of inbred rapists

                  Clear?

                  1. EDG reppin' LBC   13 years ago

So how do the honyocks, hayseeds, and stump-jumpers, fit into this?

      2. Beowulf   13 years ago

The more precise definition is west of the Hudson and South of the Holland Tunnel...

  7. Killazontherun   13 years ago

I'll likely be getting my local culture on tomorrow night when the Chocolate Drops play at a local auditorium. If I can get a babysitter for a Tuesday.

    1. Heroic Mulatto   13 years ago

The Carolina Chocolate Drops? If so, I love you.

    2. EDG reppin' LBC   13 years ago

I'd prefer these silly nillies from Chapel Hill. Superchunk: Slack Motherfucker

...a carnival of sorts celebrating North Carolina culture.

    Yuck.

    Biden's U-Haul stolen in Detroit

Ed Donovan, a spokesman for the USSS, told ABC News the truck carrying equipment was stolen between late Saturday night and early Sunday morning at the Westin Hotel in Detroit. He would not specify what kind of equipment was in the truck.

    1. EDG reppin' LBC   13 years ago

I don't know if I'd classify this as "equipment".

      1. EDG reppin' LBC   13 years ago

Oops. Meant to include this link, too.

  10. Archduke PantsFan   13 years ago

A Raleigh-based group devoted to reducing the potential for voter fraud presented the N.C. Board of Elections on Friday with a list of nearly 30,000 names of dead people statewide who are still registered to vote.
