School Choice Waived
Because of a federal waiver, failing schools in Augusta County, Virginia, will no longer have to offer options to students and their families
A waiver from the U.S. Department of Education means that Augusta County will not have to offer a school choice program.
Before Virginia was granted a waiver from the strict regulations of No Child Left Behind, schools that were considered underperforming based on Standards of Learning scores, had to offer students within that school's boundary an alternative school to attend.
Any Title 1 school that failed to make Adequate Yearly Progress for three years would be part of the statewide school choice program, and the district would be responsible for providing transportation to an alternative school that had met AYP.
