Having several friends who work in the IA department two of the largest police forces in the US, I call BS. They’ve had guys on video selling drugs on the clock and had arbitrators give them their jobs back. It is practically impossible to get rid of a bad employee in the PD if the union stands behind them. Which means child molesters and maybe sexual deviants will lose their jobs. Otherwise, reinstated with back pay is the norm.

It is telling that they have an entire department of investigators that has to be called in to get someone fired. If you keep skipping out on your tour to bang your girlfriend for a couple of hours, your lieutenant can’t just can your ass like any other low level supervisor would – he has to call in IA to do a bunch of surveilance for a few weeks at a cost of many thousands of dollars.
