Ben Bernanke joined the chorus of voices offering little hope for near-term improvement in the national unemployment rate or the overall sluggish economic environment.
- Gary Johnson's presidential campaign received a boost in the form of a million-dollar donation to a super PAC supporting his and Judge Jim Gray's candidacy. The Super PAC has been identified as the Freedom and Liberty PAC, which is specific to the Johnson-Gray ticket and which separately received a $100K contribution at the end of June.
- Federal restrictions make it nearly impossible to scientifically research marijuana's value as a medical treatment, reports a state-sponsored study from the University of Arizona. Advocates warn that pot-averse Governor Brewer will use the dearth of information as an excuse to restrict the medical marijuana program.
- An Indian fisherman says U.S. Navy personnel gave no warning before opening fire on a fishing boat, killing one man and injuring three others, in the waters of the Persian Gulf.
- Continuing a march toward irrelevance rooted in its oddly paramilitary origins, the Boy Scouts of America still insists that gays and lesbians are icky.
- Donald E. Barnes Jr. has been on Chicago Police Department disability, and free health care, for 14 years, while working a "second job" — after spending only ten days in the police academy. He's not the only former Chicago police officer — or cadet — with an interesting arrangement.
- A lawsuit challenging FEC "campaign finance regulations that require grassroots groups to register and report with the federal government just to criticize it" is being pursued by the Wyoming Liberty Group.
