A.M. Links: Walker Survives, Cali Cigarette Tax Hike Nixed, Philly Sued over Homeless Feeding Regulations
-
Governor Scott Walker survived his recall in Wisconsin. Mitt Romney won primary votes in California, New Jersey, New Mexico, Montana and South Dakota. In New Jersey, Congressman Bill Pascrell defeated Congressman Steve Rothman, who moved after last year's redistricting to avoid running against Republican Scott Garrett. In Montana, meanwhile, the state's Republican Congressman Danny Rehrberg won the primary to face Jon Tester in November.
- California said no, barely, to a cigarette tax hike, and yes, by a wide margin, to a term limits proposition. Pensions reform won in San Jose and San Diego, but unions are expected to sue. Meanwhile, in its open congressional primaries, 58 Democrats, 44 Republicans and 4 candidates with no declared party made it to the general elections for 53 congressional districts, while Dianne Feinstein will face Republican Elizabeth Emken (Spoiler: most of the incumbents will win)
- A graduating high school student in Baltimore was arrested and held without bail after a warrant was wrongfully issued by a court commissioner. "The officers were very nice. They checked on me and made sure I was eating and drinking and not so depressed and crying too much," the girl said.
- Philadelphia got slapped with a lawsuit for new regulations on feeding the homeless because, well, they're regulations on feeding the homeless.
- How the Fort Lauderdale assistant police chief's unmarked police vehicle got stolen from his driveway's kind of a puzzler. "The ignition wasn't punched, and there was no broken glass," he said. "I wonder if they towed it or had a key?"

That’s a myth anyway. Astronomy fetishists weren’t going to get hairy palms from enjoying the event, either.
GODDAMMIT! I was going to post this! Does that make us both preverts, incidentally?
Only that I can read your thoughts before you have them. Perv.
So, Monsieur Smartypants… if it’s a myth, how come I’m both blind and shaving my palms this morning – eh??
I thought so.
Lycanthropic cataracts. Or lupus.
It’s never lupus.
You’re no House!
Obese woman’s body fat burns down Austrian crematorium
You said that already.
It’s actually OK, because that story is so filled with such awesomeness that it bears repeating.
Oh God, did I? Whoops… Rupert Murdoch posted it as new a few hours ago. He hasn’t been the same since he stop dyeing his hair
I posted that yesterday.
I beat you by seconds, so you beat me by a day. You win!
I posted that yesterday.
I missed that story yesterday. Due to a friend (who easily outweighed her) passing last week, I can report American crematories are better built.
I can also report some people literally will not give up sugar and starch to save their lives.
Don’t worry, Bloomberg’s on that.
But wait. Everything IFH posts is being posted tomorrow. So if she posted it yesterday, she still posted it today and if we post after her today, we’re still posting before her because her posts are really being made tomorrow.
Am I making sense yet? Also, I’m sorry, Neil Armstrong.
Sorry, I get you 2 confused, being that you both like men.
Lindy West died?
That kind of EVIL is eternal, Saccharin Man. We can only keep it inactive. Like Herpes.
If the story is about her, then she finally made me laugh.
WTF is a Lindy West? Is that anything like a Dirty Sanchez?
She is the woman that is funnier than all men. http://jezebel.com/5914084/hey…..r-than-you
And yes, it is exactly like a dirty sanchez, except no one has an orgasm.
Eddie Murphy played some great reprobates. His career tanked after stopped playing criminals.
I’m having trouble refuting that. And I’m in a refuting mood.
Well, he is black. No racist.

The squirrels have been giving me blank screens, un-clickable links and date-stamping my posts up to 10 minutes late.

The return of the Morning Joe update, otherwise known as how high can my blood pressure get before I switch to one of the ESPNs or Angel:
Mika called everyone who voted against the Paycheck Fairness Act idiots. She then challenged anyone on the panel who disagree with her or come up with any reason to not vote for it. She was met by silence.
She was met by silence.
Even lesser idiots can learn not to argue with a greater idiot.
I hold out hope that Willie Geist is a reasonable person so I think I’ll give him the benefit of the doubt by assigning your explanation to him. Howard Dean, though, I won’t be as generous.
I think my Dad watches morning Joe simply to start his day off with good rant material.
Mika called everyone who voted against the Paycheck Fairness Act idiots.
She is the Ralph Wiggum of the MSM. Just her voice sends me into orbit, and not in a Groovy way.
Her level of discourse seems commensurate with your allies on the other thread.
As shitty as Morning Joe is they look like geniuses compared to the fuckstains on ‘Fox and Friends’.
Shriek, shouldn’t that be Mourning Joe?
In memory of our long lost Mr. Brooks, it should always be referred to as The Morning Joke.

Way to hold them to a high standard.
it’s this kind of brilliant commentary that keeps bringing me back to Reason. Please continue with your deep insights and brilliant arguments – it’s winning over converts by hundreds.
Dozens, maybe.
Well at least that homeless guy down at the 7-11 that I convinced to start reading.
I have that show on when I’m dressing for work. At least once a morning I shout “Shut the fuck up you stupid cunt.” at the TV. She really is stupid.

Wouldn’t a true “paycheck fairness act” require that everyone get paid the same amount?
What’s fair about that???

Ignore the spin: Wisconsin was a disaster for Democrats, Obama

MSNBC declares Obama winner of the Wisconsin recall
Obama says he’ll portray Romney as extreme libertarian
I like how libertarians are simultaneously depicted as a radical fringe group and in control of every branch of government. Oh, how I wish Romney was a radical libertarian.
Goddamnit. I hate when news sources do this.
I read that as toe-fat. Need more coffee…
Philadelphia got slapped with a lawsuit for new regulations on feeding the homeless because, well, they’re regulations on feeding the homeless.
NYC should get slapped with a lawsuit for new regulations on feeding the non-homeless! And, well, it applies to the homeless too.
This is all really a misunderstanding. The law was really a ban on feeding on the homeless, in response to events in Florida.
but it’s OK to give them food to do a little dance, cos that’s payment, right?
Just don’t forget to fork over the appropriate percentage of the dance’s worth in cash to the city, state, and federal tax authorities.
And make sure your licenses are in order.
Governor Scott Walker survived his recall in Wisconsin.
Woohoo! It’s amok time!
*smashes monitor throws coffee mug into hall*
I suspect he would have survived even if he had lost the recall.
Is this A.M. Links? I can’t tell because it’s not in the headline, Ed.

Just because athletic women may not be your thing, that doesn’t seem to be a good enough reason to dump on female tennis players and the men who like them.
God, last night was just so epic. Walker won by a wider margin in the recall than he did in the general election. The result couldn’t have been any more embarrassing for the union cause.
What election? Walker?
Was that the guy they pretended to try to recall so that they could get exit polling saying that Obama will win Wisconsin?
What election? Walker?
Zombies in office.
Perhaps, but remember, the leeches don’t fall off the host until it’s dead.
If someone doesn’t work up a The Walker Dead, depicting union members as zombies, I’ll be disappoint.
Excerpt from script to a zombie movie I’m hoping to get funding for someday:
Zombie 1: HOOOOOOPE
Zombie 2: CHAAAAAANGE
Zombie 1: YES WE CAAAAAAN
Zombie 3: FORRRRWAAAAAARD
Oddly, the hour-long local news at 10 last night didn’t even mention the Wisconsin election. And it wasn’t just because of the wall-to-wall Sandusky trial coverage either; they had time to talk about Ohio passing a law banning exotic animal purchases and a track champion girl in some other state who finished last after helping an injured competitor finish a race.
And this morning we’ve got the usual fruitcakes saying that Walker’s victory doesn’t mean anything regarding the upcoming fight in Michigan or Obama’s agenda.
Disabled and disturbed penguins stolen by absurdist thief
http://www.news.com.au/breakin…..6385930891
It will be interesting to see if BP posts today.
What? Why? I had nothing to do with this, nothing at all. **whistles nonchalantly**
How do you know you aren’t next on his list? He could be stealing unusual penguins for an eccentric millionaire’s private collection, and a baked penguin would surely be a high priority
It was the “disturbed” part that stuck out.
TWO penguins, one with a limp and one that tends to bite, have been stolen from a specialist care centre on South Australia’s Granite Island.
“I call the big one, Bitey.”
Good grief! How the hell did someone pull that off? Doesn’t seem to be access friendly:

You can’t buy them super size slurpees either.

Wait, how is she suing for sexual harrasment when she wasn’t forced to do anything sexual?
And she apparently didn’t have so much of a problem with the goings on that a steady paycheck couldn’t smooth over.
And how do you live in this country for 7+ years and still say “I am hungry” in *broken* english?
I can say that in decent italian and I only lived there for 3.5 years.

I was reading the post-election thread on FARK last night and some of the liberal commentators were so butthurt that they were reporting anyone who made a pro-Walker comment for trolling. I haven’t enjoyed someone’s misery this much since the Ravens choked against the Patriots in the playoffs.
Now hopefully, LA will win tonight and I can enjoy reading the Flyers boards when Richards and Carter lift the cup.

Kill Scott Walker”: Angry libs flood Twitter with death threats after Wisconsin recall defeat
http://twitchy.com/2012/06/06/…..ll-defeat/
Oh, their tears are so yummy. But this reminds me I need to start saving for a good shotgun before November; I don’t want to be caught unprotected by the angry mobs. Anyone have a suggestion on models?
I am old school. I love a Remington 870 12 gauge pump action. There are few more terrifying sounds in the world than a pump action shotgun cambering a round.
How about a pump action shotgun firing a round?
Well, yes. But the moment of terror tends to be shorter.
There are few more terrifying sounds in the world than a pump action shotgun cambering a round.
Unless the home invader is armed, in which case now he (a) knows where you are, and (b) is going to shoot you on sight rather than just threatening you.
“The first rule of battle, little one, is to never let them know where you are.”
Course there’s other schools of thought.
New school: Kel Tek KSG
12GA, 15 round capacity (with 2.5″ shells), bullpup design only 26.1″ long (26″ being the federal legal minimum), 18.5″ cylinder bore barrel (18″ being the federal legal minimum), 6.9 lbs., picatinny rails, all for $880.
http://www.keltecweapons.com/o…..tguns/ksg/
I’m going to have to look into that…
Get an AR.
Remington 1100 or 11/87. I use my 11/87 in multigun competition and have never had a malfunction. Get one with the shortest legal barrel (18″+ for shotguns). Put an extended mag tube on it and also a tactical holt handle. Sidesaddle shell carrier and an elastic one for the buttstock keeps your ammo close to gand. I think remington makes a ‘tactical’ model.
Do you recommend staying away from the buttless “tactical shotguns” the SWAT teams use (and consumers buy up by the thousands)? My own cogitation on that matter led me to stick with buttful shotguns.
Me personally, given the recoil I would want a butt.
A folding stock is possible if you need to cut down the size of the gun for storage but it should still have a decent sized buttpad.
I own both. The only advantage a pistol-grip pump has (otger than looking badass) is maneuverability. Get a shottie with a buttstock because the pistol grip kind can be hard to aim and the recoil can be hard to control without a lot of practice. If you think an inexperienced user might have to use the gun, buttstock is important. Plus it helps because the manual of arms for a semi shottie with a buttstock is very similar to a carbine.
I like a nice, padded butt.
I just picked up a Winchester SXP Defender that should be arriving at my FFL sometime this week. Supposed to be a really good home defense tool, we’ll see.
AFAIK, the only manufacturer of shotguns is Mossberg, and the only model they make is the 500.
Too bad so many of the comments are openly racist over there. And not “I’m Team BLUE and you’re just a racist” kind of racist either.

And on it goes.
Fuck those people. Racism is the worst form of collectivism.

No, anywhere not near a new source was the best place to be.

Did they teach them how to make that most difficult of things: mayonnaise? From what I’ve been told, it’s a Brooklyn delicacy of extraordinary magnificence.
A motherucking hipster mayonnaise shop. I just can’t get past it.
I put that up there with the cereal restaurant.
OTOH, I’m all for honestly fleecing blithering idiots of their hard earned cash.
That was my first thought too – I have only respect for such a clever business model. Wish I had thought of it first.
It’s free range organic mayonnaise.
New rule: any judge who cries during a chef audition that doesn’t involve onions should be fired. Immediately.
Was that MasterChef? I hate the tear-bait audition segments – just get to the cutthroat competition already.
Interesting thing about Walker is that he outperformed the polls by two or three percentage points. And this in an election in a state that is majority Democrat and in a recall election where the Democrats could concentrate all of their efforts. Yet, he still out performed the polls. That doesn’t bode well for Obama. If Romney outperforms the polls by three points, Obama is done.
It is also funny to see these bastards finally kill the golden goose. Ten years ago public sector unions were not even in the public conscience. Conservatives and libertarians hated them but the public didn’t care. It was unthinkable that they could ever be killed. And it was a great set up for the Left. They forced all of these people to join and pay dues and then skimmed the money to basically fund the professional Left. No one has had that kind of a deal since the mob did with the Teamsters. And they still would have that deal today except that the public sector unions couldn’t ever satiate themselves. Had the states not started going broke from public sector salaries no way would Walker have made these reforms much less won a recall after doing them. Now the public sector union money trough is drying up. They literally killed the golden goose.
With the double-dip recession nearly upon us, by the time November rolls around Obama probably won’t be able to win a single non-coastal state besides Illinois.
He’s only getting a fraction of the donations everyone thought he was going to, and he’s going to get his ass kicked.
I think he is going to lose. But I am starting to wonder if he is going to lose badly.
Define “lose badly.”
I suppose “lose badly” as in a big point spread might be a possibility. The “bad loser” stuff my mother warned me about is a lead pipe cinch, and will be a couple orders of magnitude worse than this.
How can you wingnecks be so devoid of facts?
Obama is up +4 in Florida and +12 in Pennsylvania – and up a good deal in Ohio.
http://2012.talkingpointsmemo……fpnewsfeed
Show me a poll that puts Romney up in those must-win states and I will change my mind (no Rasmussen or World Nut Daily links).
And the polls had Walker right at 50% going into last night. How did that work out for you. And that is in a state that is a lot more Democrat than Pennsylvania or Florida.
You need to start steeling yourself for the Obamasiah leaving office. Please consider suicide as an option for the sake of all of us.
I suggest preemptive suicide.
What bullshit. Obama isn’t going to win Florida. It won’t even be close.
I dunno, depends on how Medicare gets spun.
Florida leans the other direction as a whole and tends to be fiscally conservative. No way Obama wins, even with many seniors dependent on state largess. Unsustainable can fuck up their lives, too, and many of them know it.
Besides, it’s not like seniors determine the vote here. They’re less than a third of eligible voters, and even with a greater propensity to turn out, they aren’t monolithic.
Well, since you live there and are politically astute, I’ll accept this analysis. I just can’t shake the feeling that the entitled masses will not turn out for the vote. “Free Shit” sells and sells big.
I also heard this morning on the radio, WSJ Morning News, suggested that His Pestilency will bow out and Billary (more like Billiary) will be nominated from the floor of the DNC convention.
I predicted this long ago. That would be a biiiig problem for the GOP if it happens, but it seems much less likely now.
WSJ Morning News, suggested that His Pestilency will bow out
Doubtfull. I don’t think his ego will allow it.
I don’t think Michelle would allow it.
Medicare is always big in Florida, but it’s already discounted and there’s nothing much new.
I want to see what happens if Democrats make a big push against Stand Your Ground.
Especially now that Castro’s niece has advocated for him. Miami and the northern half of the state are a lock for Romney now.
Oh well, yesterday wasn’t a perfect day; you’re still plaguing the world with your existence.
Don’t forget that at this time in 1980, Jimmy Carter had a considerably bigger poll lead over Reagan than the fairly miniscule one that Obama has right now.
Is the same TPM you posted that Utter Bullshit “Obama Cut Spending” chart from yesterday? Because that was fucking utter shite and you damn well know it.
“talking points” indeed.
Public Policy Polling had Barret and Walker in a statistical dead heat on Monday.
Their poll results have similar value to used toilet paper.
People who saw their 401(k)s halved in value in 2008 aren’t too happy about cops, firemen, et al. with $80k pensions and complete health coverage for life.
No they are not. But had the pensions been anything but completely outrageous and indefensible, this still would have never happened. The Dems do a great job or propagandizing for government employees. But the salaries got so outrageous even that didn’t help. When some math teacher in Madison has a better retirement than a full colonel in the Army, something has gone amiss.
The Great Recession may turn out to have been a blessing in disguise.
They always are.
The dems do a great job of conflating all government employees with “teachers and firemen.”
Mike Reagan posited on one of the post-election wonkfests that he thought the disparity between the exit polls and the actual returns was the product of union members voting against the recall but being afraid of voicing their opinions to others.
I’ve long said that Romney doesn’t have a chance against Obama, but I’m starting to think that I am wrong on that. I think Obama is one major screw-up away from having a huge part of his base stay at home.
I think it is also a product of Republicans being really pissed off and being much more enthusiastic than Democrats. And that is not going to change. Romney is pretty much incidental at this point.
Don’t forget – the PPACA decision LOOMS LARGE.
The SCOTUS decision will either cause me to cum buckets or kill myself (not really). How they rule on severability will be the lynchpin.
And, TAO, that’s OBAMNEYCARE, you magnificent bitch! You’re so othered.
Look here, laddie, I’ll have none o’ your lip today. This here is National Scott Walker Day.
Agreed. Would you like a cigar and a brandy both lit and served by private sector waitresses?
Or a juicebox and a Woobie? LOL 🙂
Does brandy have a high enough alcohol content to light?
/pedant
Does brandy have a high enough alcohol content to light?
That was grammatically FUBAR’d, wasn’t it? I meant the cigar lit and and brandy poured and both served by the comely non-union wenches. Dick.
National Scott Walker Day? Oh, OK then
No way they could have kept control over their members if they had agreed to the bennie cuts and salary freezes needed to avert fiscal catastrophe. The union leaders have the same problem politicians have: sometimes they have to promise the impossible to stay in power.
Mass. Democrats require photo ID despite racism charges
http://www.examiner.com/articl…..sm-charges
Massachusetts Democrats required photo identification for entry into this past weekend’s state Democratic Convention, Mike Flynn of Big Government reported, touching on a stance not just advanced by the party to discourage Voter ID laws based on accusations of disenfranchisement and racism, but one being actively pursued by Attorney General Eric Holder’s Justice Department with legal actions to challenge such requirements on those grounds.
“Ben Jealous, of the NAACP, has gone so far as to argue that such requirements are tantamount to modern-day Jim Crow laws,” Flynn wrote.
“Funny they don’t feel that way for their own party conventions,” he noted.
I had to click on the link just to verify that there was a NAACP spokestard with such the appropriate name “Ben Jealous.”
Sure nuff…
I’d love to see some joker file a civil rights complaint against the DNC with the DOJ.
Fast and Furious wiretap information obtained by Congress
http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-50…..-congress/
(CBS News) The lead House Republican investigating Operation Fast and Furious, Rep. Darrell Issa (R-CA), today said senior Justice Department officials had specific information that their federal agents were using controversial “gunwalking” tactics.
Justice Department officials have consistently denied that was the case. But today in a letter to Attorney General Eric Holder, Issa revealed that he has reviewed sealed wiretap applications in the case, which were signed off on the authority of Holder’s Assistant Attorney General Lanny Breuer. Issa wrote Holder “having seen the wiretap applications, we now know that the information coming from the (Justice) Department has been misleading. That must stop.”
Issa and others familiar with the wiretap applications say they contain a “remarkable level of detail about these objectionable tactics.” That appears contrary to Holder’s testimony to Congress on Nov. 8, 2011 when Holder stated, “I’d be surprised if the tactics themselves about gunwalking were actually contained in those, in those [wiretap] applications. I have not seen them, but I would be surprised [if] that were the case.” Holder later made a similar statement to Congress on Feb. 2, 2012.
Don’t worry Lanny, the President will pardon that lying to Congress conviction we are setting you up for.
Too bad MNG isn’t around anymore. Would have been fun to watch him contort himself around this one.

Indiana Sets A Model For All States
http://market-ticker.org/akcs-www?post=206871
… “Every time police Sergeant Joseph Hubbard stops a speeder or serves a search warrant, he says he worries suspects assume they can open fire — without breaking the law.”
“Hubbard, a 17-year veteran of the police department in Jeffersonville, Indiana, says his apprehension stems from a state law approved this year that allows residents to use deadly force in response to the ‘unlawful intrusion’ by a ‘public servant’ …”
“The solution this is simple: Don’t undertake unlawful intrusions.
“The issue arises because of a case in Indiana where the State Supreme Court held that you had no right to resist an unlawful entry by the police.” …

Cops living in fear of the public. Interesting reversal.
Hi, my name’s Officer HURRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR, and I hate icky laws that make it harder for me to do illegal shit to people and their property. Policemen of the world, unite!
I like the example that was put forth, that current law means that if you come home and a cop is raping your wife, your only option is to call 911 and wait by the door until one of his buddies shows up.
Hopefully, to arrest the rapist, but if he decided to join in, well, that’s an option, too.

Police Stop, Handcuff Every Adult at Intersection in Search for Bank Robber
Police in Aurora, Colo., searching for suspected bank robbers stopped every car at an intersection, handcuffed all the adults and searched the cars, one of which they believed was carrying the suspect.
Police said they had received what they called a “reliable” tip that the culprit in an armed robbery at a Wells Fargo bank committed earlier was stopped at the red light.
“We didn’t have a description, didn’t know race or gender or anything, so a split-second decision was made to stop all the cars at that intersection, and search for the armed robber,” Aurora police Officer Frank Fania told ABC News.
Officers barricaded the area, halting 19 cars.
“Cops came in from every direction and just threw their car in front of my car,” Sonya Romero, one of the drivers who was handcuffed, told ABC News affiliate KMGH-TV in Denver.
From there, the police went from car to car, removing the passengers and handcuffing the adults.
Hmm, random stop, arrest, and search. Oh yeah, that sounds totally legal and above board.
Sounds like they need to fire everyone and start over.
THIS is what police think of your constitutional rights. To wit, absolutely nothing.
The due in charge of that fiasco should be fired immediately and every officer should be required to undergo a crash course in the bill of rights.
There was a blog post on this last night.
The majority opinion here seems to be that if they hadn’t caught the guy, this would’ve been a bad move. I fucking hate this state sometimes.
Rothman you pussy. I would have loved it if you had run against Garrett. (I live in Garrett’s district, he may be the most fiscally conservative Rep in Congress).
Garrett destroying a decent challenger would have upped turnout in Warren and Sussex Counties and may have helped Romney and Kyrillos (running for Senator against Menendez)
“he may be the most fiscally conservative Rep in Congress”
Excluding one Dr. Paul, of course?
This might have gotten buried in the 300 comment thread from last night on the recall, but Scott S. mentioned something about a grown man crying on CNN.

I have nearly licked a hole in my computer screen trying to savor every drop from his tear ducts. They’re more delicious than free range mayonnaise from Brooklyn.
Mmmmmmmmmmm. MMMmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.
While salty bitter cheese tears may not be as tasty as salty ham tears, they’re still pretty tasty.
Bonus: he’s a Red Sox fan. I’m almost ashamed of my glee.
It’s like, not even fucking fair, is it?
Oh, the tears of unfathomable sadness! My-ymmuy. [licks the tears off the table and off Scott’s face.] Mm-yummy you guys!
—Eric Cartman
Suu-weeeet!
That’s almost as good as the dead cat turned into a helicopter.
Thanks Randian
That brought a tear of happiness to my eye.
Made my day!
As Sandra Lee would say…sodalicious!
or funtastic even
Thanks Randian. Also, why was this whiny douche sporting a Red Sox cap? He was in Wisconsin. I mean, he wasn’t some union agitator who was shipped in from Boston to intimidate voters, was he?
Go back to Boston, and use those salty tears to make some chowder. Ass!
I’m thinking of the four BoSox fans I know… you’re right. All whiny douches.
His accent was OTT Wisconsin, so maybe he thought the “B” on his cap was for Brewers. He is certainly moronic enough to make that assumption.
You really are waiting for him to pick up his ball and run home at any second.
My only criticism is that it needed more lip quivering.
I can’t remember if I posted this yesterday, but Cop lies and has neighbor charged and jailed without bail on lies. Charges against man still not dropped and officer not charged with anything.
Actually, Palacios was slapped with official misconduct, perjury and offering a false instrument charges for arresting John Hockenjos in a case built prosecutors say was built on lies.
My bad for not seeing the follow up story. Thanks for correcting me.

Estonia is the only euro-zone country with a budget surplus. National debt is just 6 percent of GDP, compared to 81 percent in virtuous Germany, or 165 percent in Greece.
Shoppers throng Nordic design shops and cool new restaurants in Tallinn, the medieval capital, and cutting-edge tech firms complain they can’t find people to fill their job vacancies.
It all seems a long way from the gloom elsewhere in Europe.
Estonia’s achievement is all the more remarkable when you consider that it was one of the countries hardest hit by the global financial crisis. In 2008-2009, its economy shrank by 18 percent. That’s a bigger contraction than Greece has suffered over the past five years.
How did they bounce back? “I can answer in one word: austerity. Austerity, austerity, austerity,” says Peeter Koppel, investment strategist at the SEB Bank.

somewhere I hear Krugman wagging his beard, shouting “NO NO NO!”
“Women and minorities hardest hit, by this prudence and responsible stewardship.”

Worth posting twice. Estonia is a hop, skip and a jump from UKR.
Estonia has remarkably sensible tax policy too. Pretty much a simple, flat 21%. And the people and language are lovely, from what I can tell since having some clients there. I plan to visit this fall.
Have a bucket of salty ham tears.
The video I mentioned upthread is so transcendentally funny that it may have changed my life.
My FB feed is utterly silent this AM, except for the faint wail of sobs in the distance.
This is in start contrast to yesterday, where the overriding theme was “Faster Unioncat! Vote! Vote!”
I’ve only seen two posting on my FB so far…one from a NASCAR conservative in Wisconsin and the other from a liberal lawyer in Nebraska. I hope it stays that way.
Was the liberal decrying the demise of democracy?
Nahhh…she said something like “dammit Wisconsin”. And she’s a fucking corporate lawyer…I thought that pretty much required her to be against unions.
“Walker’s victory owes a great deal to the fact that he had a huge cash advantage over Barrett?he outspent him seven to one.”
I’m confused. How many votes did Citizen United cast?
I keep seeing that, but somehow I doubt that its true. Has it been substantiated, or is it just too good to check?
looks like the Center for Public Integrity is the source of that figure.

They got it from the Wisconsin Democracy Campaign, so I await confirmation by a reliable, non-biased source without an anti-Walker, anti-free speech axe to grind.
I would bet my life savings they aren’t counting independent expenditures by unions etc.
The vast majority of the anti-Mitt ads we’re getting here in PA are from independent groups, so it seems likely that’s going to be the case in many of the campaigns.
Notice that the amount of PubSec union money and the other unions never seems to be reported…
You don’t understand, it wasn’t cash, it was just time, effort, thuggery, and threats of physical violence. That makes it holy and not sinful like buying TV ads.
It was reported, just ignored for this calculation.
Yeah the DNC saw a big fat loser over a month ago and pulled all its marbles out of the game. O wouldn’t touch it. The MSM started downplaying the significance a couple of weeks ago. Why are any of these people surprised?
99% of campaign cash buys advertising to get your message out.
The recall message was, “Union people only make 150% of what productive workers do, can’t be fired, and retire 50% earlier, so they need more protection.”
A shortage of advertising funds wasn’t the problem.
More greatness from Jezebel:
I just had breakfast with my husband and his boss (we’re accompanying him on a business trip), and CNN was playing in the hotel lobby, and Walker’s win was on. Just as I said, “Oh my God, I cannot believe that guy gets to keep his job,” his boss said, “Yay, he won! God, I hate unions. They are destroying America.” Whoops! No promotion for my husband this year, I’m guessing! Also, sad for him that he has to work with someone like that
I could spend all day reading this kind of stuff.
Whoops! No promotion for my husband this year, I’m guessing!
The dude shouldn’t be promoted. He clearly doesn;t know how to hire.
“I am crying bitter, bitter tears with you tonight, minority of Wisconsin that didn’t vote for Walker twice.”
reason, you havin’ a rough day today there buddy? You need a soda? A nap?
I think it needs a good, swift kick in the ass, myself.
I suggest a juice box and a Woobie.
Both of these suggestions made me laugh. Juice box and Woobie now, swift kick in the ass to jar it awake.
Performance issues, somebody call in the fluffer
Not only are school administrators assholes, so are the police.
FTA: “Police reportedly warned parents that screaming would result in expulsion from the Florence Civic Center. Those who became disorderly as they were shown the exit were also arrested, officials said.
That allegedly included Cooper, who was placed in a police van and then taken to a detention center. She was there for several hours before posting a $225 bond, according to WPDE.
“Yesterday can’t be replaced… My mama went to jail on my graduation day,” Iesha Cooper, 18, told the station.”
And a story of a second kid in the same article contains this: It wasn’t jail but community service that student Anthony Cornist was reportedly handed after his graduation from Mt. Healthy Junior/Senior High School in Ohio. His family and supporters gave him such a rowdy reception that school officials denied him his diploma and told him he will have to perform 20 hours of community service before he can graduate, according to ABC 9 in Cincinnati.
“I will be holding your diploma in the main office due to the excessive cheering your guests displayed during the roll call,” principal Marlon Styles Jr. wrote to Cornist in a letter obtained by ABC 9.”
Sight unseen, I bet the families are black.
Black people are loud at graduations, and stodgy white people hate it hate it hate it. I think it’s great, myself.
I’ve never cared for cheering at graduations, regardless of who the graduate is. However, it bothers me less than it used to. Hell, at my GF’s Ph.D commencement, there were people of all races cheering their graduates loudly, to my surprise.
a Ph.D commencement is very different from finishing 12 years of mandatory public daycare.
It didn’t bother me there because it was a particularly joyous occasion.
Down here everybody cheers loudly… and then there’s always the hispanic family who sneaks in an air horn. It’s all fun and games, don’t know how anybody could be annoyed by it.
I’ve been to commemcements where excessive cheering drowned out the announcement of otger graduates’ names. That’s not cool.
I dunno. I personally think that whoever is running an event can set the rules they want, and if you break the rules, they can kick you out.
Plus, I have a low tolerance for people’s fucking drama in public. Be an immature child on your own time, people.

^^ This ^^
My attitude is: It’s high school. Get over it. When your little shitstain does something truly remarkable then you can cheer, but until then STFU. What really irks me are the kindergarten “graduation” ceremonies. WTF. Just another example of celebrating mediocraty in the name of building self esteem turning everone into self-satisfied narcissistic douches.
Must be cultural differences but I’ve never been to a graduation where shouting for your child was out of the ordinary.
I graduated from high school in Fairfield County, CT. It was all polite golf claps. Pretty boring, come to think of it.
Sounds like it, high school graduations are boring enough as it is. I’ve attended many as I have plenty of cousins and we stand up and cheer every time. Stick in the muds like RC Dean can suck it.
It probably depends on how commonplace people actually graduating high school is in your neck of the woods.
I don’t get it myself. But I didn’t really consider graduating from high school to be that much of an accomplishment either.
that said, others brought air horns to my graduation.
Well the whole not really an accomplishment thing…and when your last name is such that you’re the very last person to walk and the graduating class is 1K people, you want the screaming air horn toting throngs to STFU so they can get through all those names already. There’s partying to do.
From the LA Times: “a tax designed to raise an estimated $860 million a year for research on tobacco-related diseases and prevention programs.” (emphasis mine) People still believe this flapdoodle? Sheesh.
+1 for use of the word “flapdoodle.”
I stole it from John Derbyshire.
I likes it.
I would like to take this opportunity to extend my deepest regret to Neil Armstrong. Neil, you are a great American hero. Your contributions to mankind, like curing AIDS, inventing the two-point conversion and rack-and-pinion steering are only eclipsed by your exploits in space. I wronged you on more than one occasion more than two decades ago. I wish to offer you the humblest of apologies.
Oh, shit, Ray Bradbury kicked it. Probably of sadness after hearing of Neil Fucking Armstrong’s poor treatment.
