Reason "Hero of Freedom" Larry Flynt's Latest Stunt? Photoshopping a Penis into Mouth of Conservative Pundit S.E. Cupp
In 2003, Reason celebrated its 35th anniversary by compiling a list of "Heroes of Freedom" who we thought had helped to "make the world groovier and groovier since 1968," when the magazine started publishing. "Honorees needed to have been alive at some point during reason's run," ran the intro. "The list is by design eclectic, irreverent, and woefully incomplete, but it limns the many ways in which the world has only gotten groovier and groovier during the last 35 years."
Some of the entrants were obvious jokes (John Ashcroft and Richard Nixon, for instance, were cited for their ability to fire people up to protect their rights), some were libertarian superheroes (Milton Friedman, Ayn Rand), and others were just controversial picks, even for our core audience. (The full roster is here.)
In the latter categry was Hustler founder Larry Flynt, of whom we wrote:
Larry Flynt. Where Hugh Hefner mainstreamed bohemian sexual mores, hard-core porn merchant Flynt brought tastelessness to new depths, inspiring an unthinkable but revealing coalition between social conservatives and puritanical feminists - and helping to strengthen First Amendment protections for free expression along the way.
Flynt's latest stunt involves photoshopping a penis into the mouth of conservative commentator S.E. Cupp of GBTV.
Under the headline "Celebrity Fantasy," the text beside the picture asks, "What would S.E. Cupp look like with a [d**k] in her mouth?"
S.E. Cupp is a lovely young lady who read too much Ayn Rand in high school and ended up joining the dark side. Cupp, an author and media commentator who often shows up on Fox News programs, is undeniably cute. But her hotness is diminished when she espouses dumb ideas like defunding Planned Parenthood. Perhaps the method pictured here is Ms. Cupp's suggestion for avoiding an unwanted pregnancy.
A disclaimer follows: "No such picture of S.E. Cupp actually exists. This composite fantasy is altered from the original for our imagination, does not depict reality, and is not to be taken seriously for any purpose."
The Hustler picture has drawn the scorn of a wide-range of people from all around the political spectrum, including birth-control advocate Sandra Fluke and Planned Parenthood. So Flynt is yet again inspiring a new and revealing coalition of ideological opponents. This one is healthier than the earlier version, as those offended by the image as truly pathetic, sad, and indecent (count me in) aren't talking about censorship but about public shaming.
Flynt's statement on the controversy, also published by The Blaze, is simply:
"That's satire. I'm able to publish this because of the Supreme Court case I won in 1984, Flynt v. Falwell."
Among many other things, Hustler and Flynt remind us once again that satire is not the equivalent of funny or insightful, particularly when it trades in the rankest form of misogyny. Really, if your best response to someone you disagree with is to put a cock in her mouth, it's well past time to consider retirement. Or at least to consider repeating the 6th grade.
Cupp told The Blaze she "was horrified and disgusted" when she first saw the picture: "It's uncomfortable. I'm not in this business to talk about myself, I'm not in this business to talk about my character… I'd much rather be talking about Obama's economic record or his foreign policy than myself and having to defend myself against [this photo]."
In December 2010, Cupp attended Reason's New York event celebrating adult filmmaker John Stagliano's victory over federal obscenity charges (yes, we defend free speech unreservedly). We asked a variety of attendees -- ranging from Stagliano himself to Fox News' Greg Gutfeld to Andrew Breitbart -- what they consider to be the biggest threat to free speech. Cupp shows up around the 2.20 mark and her answer will suprise most people, I think.
And note the opening soundbite by Andy Levy of Fox News' Red Eye: "Ultimately, the right to free speech is the right to be an asshole. What makes this country great is assholes." I agree with him, and yet somehow want to disagree at the same time.

I'm sure all the liberals over at MSNBC will jump all over Flynt for his "War on Women". Any second now...
Cue us.
it's only war when "they" do it.
because larry flynt = rush limbaugh!
To the Left, it's not what's said or done, it's who says or does it.
QED
do you have a newsletter one may subscribe to?
You're right. Larry Flynt has a bigger audience.
spineless
+100
A reminder that just because you have a right to do something, you are still a classless soultick, Larry.
Sure it's stupid and juvenile, but would anyone have seen it if news organizations hadn't put it out to a mainstream audience? Who buys porn magazines that also has an opinion people listen to? It's Hustler, what do you expect?
Who buys porn magazines at all?
Isn't free porn the reason the intertubes was invented?
The intertubes was created as a collaborative effort between Jerry Fallwell, Algore, the Bilderbergs, and the National Pooltable Alliance to significantly diminish Flynt's empire of smut.
People without access to the internet.
Hustler is delivered to every congressional office every month.
The problem with the speech that needs defending from censorship is that it's so rarely defensible on its own merits. It has only the principle of freedom of speech going for it (which ought to be enough, of course - it's just tiring).
Oh, spare me. She's an unremarkable journalist who has attained a significant portion of her success because she's eye-candy. "Objectification" gave her a career. No one's fooled by this crude, classless photoshop so she has no grounds for a defamationsuit. Her complaints about her delicate sensitivities are just whiny bullshit.
Cupp has a bad habit of doing that. I will not defend this picture. And Cupp has a right to be pissed about it.
But that said, if she doesn't like to be "objectified" or have people comment on her looks, then she ought to not go on Fox News in a skirt three inches above her knees sitting with her legs to the camera, something she does on a regular basis. She totally has gotten ahead because she is hot.
There are tons of smart right wing bloggers who don't seem to get gigs on Fox News all of the time. No one seems to be wanting to sign up the Anchoress for any TV appearances. Gee, could the fact that she is a slightly over weight middle aged nun have something to do with that?
I'm pretty sure the Fox producers have something to say about that. Dana Perino is another babe strategically plunked so as to display her considerable assets to the camera.
Not that I'm complaining, mind you.
She could always tell the producers "no I am wearing pants or a long dress". Of course that might mean less TV time.
That all makes me wonder just what skills Gretchen Carlson has to stay on the air at Fox. She is the one exception to the "only babes" get on the air.
Didn't Carlson used to be Miss Idaho or something?
I'm kidding about the state, but I believe she was in one of those pageants and won (back in 1977 or something).
Without googling her, I think she made it all the way to Miss America or Miss USA.
She was Miss America and is supposed to be a world class violinist. But I don't think that is the talent that keeps her and her bad bleach job on the air.
no, it's pretty much the skin tight club dresses, though often in pink. Good grief; that color does not look good on anyone and there is a curious juxtaposition in Carlson: she dresses to look hot yet comes off as the sexless scold.
Well, to be fair, the quote above doesn't say she's concerned about being objectified. I am sure she is quite aware that she is very good-looking and obviously she is using that to her benefit. If she had complained that men pay insufficient attention to her writing and too much attention to her short skirts, I'd agree that it would be baseless whining. But photoshopping a dick into her mouth is way over the line and she is right to be upset about it.
She has done that. She has often complained how she finds it "creepy" when men comment on her looks on the internet. That is what I was speaking about.
Yes, she has a right to be pissed over this.
John, women are essentially required by mainstream culture to complain about it being creepy when men check them out, regardless of whether they actually enjoy it or hate it. Society sends a lot of strong cues to girls from an early age that too much sexuality from women is not acceptable.
Really? I mean, it is so obvious that she is using her looks to further her career. Which is not hard, because she is truly smoking hot. I guess if she reads this it will feel all "creepy" to learn that men find obviously attractive women attractive.
KC,
there's a lot of that going on - attractive women who use their looks when it benefits them but then get pissed off when someone mentions their looks.
Cupp's better strategy would be to say something like "Larry who?" or to just laugh at it. The faux outrage folks like her resort to does not sell.
Clearly it does.
I'm curious - how is this "over the line" exactly?
My line, in full disclosure, is pretty far out there, so maybe I have a warped perspective. Is it juvenile, crass, and unfunny? Yes. Does it exceed the bounds of discourse, given the publication's raison d'etre and the kinds of things that are on the internet every day? Well, no.
That's an interesting question--does the circulation of Hustler justify making a big deal of this? Given where she is in regards to the political fence and that she's attractive, I rather suspect this isn't her first photoshop of a sexual nature.
It's tasteless and stupid, of course, but what else is new? He's just trolling. Best to ignore. Or enjoy, if that's what gets you off.
She would have been better off not saying anything. But complaining gets her in the news and makes her a martyr. I guarantee you this hasn't hurt her career. In some ways it is a bit of a symbiotic relationship here. The publicity helps both sides.
I guess I am less outraged over this because Cupp is such a self promoter. Not that there is anything wrong with being a self promoter. But doing so comes with risks. And I doubt she is too upset about the publicity this is giving her.
OK I did some "research" on this and changing my opinion. I'm not going to say she deserved this photshop treatment, but it's close. I mean, this is not a woman sho is intent on downplaying her sex appeal and seeking to be taken seriously as a journalist:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x5jF_qMcRqw
Wow. Kwanzaa. She does have a hell of a set of legs. It is not her fault she is hot. And I don't blame her for using that to get on TV. But I think that clip takes away her right to ever be taken seriously again.
Certainly shows another side, almost as if she's two girls, one Cupp....
They actually made that joke on Red Eye once.
So you're a telepath, huh?
No, she would've been better off having one of her friends (if she lacks the requisite skills herself) photoshop a dick in Larry Flynt's mouth, and post the photo on her blog.
Here's my take on "over-the-line" issues. If the picture were of me or a relative, would I be fucking pissed? If so, then yeah, it's over the line.
And who the fuck gets upset about defunding Planned Parenthood?
Please provide a picture of your sister, mother, or some other woman you know personally.
Thanks in advance!
But that said, if she doesn't like to be "objectified" or have people comment on her looks, then she ought to not go on Fox News in a skirt three inches above her knees sitting with her legs to the camera, something she does on a regular basis.
Seriously? You're incapable of refraining from out-loud "objectifying" if a woman wears anything semi-revealing?
I'm calling bullshit. Maybe her looks helped her get a head but so what. There's lucky breaks in all our lives that, combined with hard work, helped us get ahead. That doesn't excuse troglyodyte behavior like Mr Flynt's.
I didn't say it did. Read the whole comment Tulpa. I said she had every right to be pissed about this.
What she doesn't have a right to do is whine about people commenting on her looks when she so obviously uses her looks to get ahead. If you don't want people commenting on your legs, don't show them all the way up to your ass on national TV.
"She was askin' for it. Didja see what she was wearin'?"
^ WIN ^
^ THIS ^. Ultimate Win.
As far as her quote above is concerned, does she mention objectification anywhere?
You're right insofar as many of the Fox News anchorettes and pundettes seem to have a deliberate and knowing understanding of their eye-candy purpose on TV (see: Guilfoyle, Kimberly).
But, surely, we can have some space that allows women to be teasing and flirty, and working their sexual presence without it going into full frontal Hustler mode.
And spare me your outrage over her outrage. The woman had a cock photoshopped in front of her face. I don't care much for Cupp, but she's allowed to be ticked off about it; even if her anger may be manufactured.
I'm not sure I get why her looks are even relevant. She works in a visual medium and good looking people fare better in that medium than the plain Janes and average Joes. Flynt reacted to a position that he didn't like by making Cupp the subject in the adult equivalent of a seventh grade slam book. She has every right to be pissed.
I'm not sure I get why her looks are even relevant.
They aren't. It's just a flimsy, easily-knocked-down rationalization on the respective parts who are chortling over this solely for brute, ideological reasons.
If Ms. Cupp looked like Whoopi Goldberg, they'd simply reach hastily for some other rhetorical fig leaf, and carry on from there.
No one's fooled by this crude, classless photoshop so she has no grounds for a defamationsuit.
I don't find it ipso facto absurd that S E Cupp partakes in fellatio. So I don't think that "unbelievability" defense works for a potential defamation suit.
It's not like having Jerry Falwell write an article about a sexual encounter with his mother.
Wouldn't the defense be the inclusion, as part of the article, of a disclaimer that the picture is a fake?
Yes, it's disgusting. The Harper Valley PTA agrees, she's "wearin' her dresses way too high."
Women who wear their dresses way too high deserve what they get.
Everyone says so.
You don't think maybe there's just a little bit of gray between your black "wimmin what dress like sluts deserve everything they git" and his white "live by the sword, die by the sword?"
Then again, what am I saying? Where would the Internet be if every thought were not immediately taken to its logical extreme to determine whether it had any merit at all?
It shouldn't come as a shock to find that Flynt "crossed the line" once again. Mostly it is just shocking to find that people believe that there still is a line with him.
I agree that there has to be some middle ground. Dressing provocatively doesn't mean that someone deserves to be attacked, whether physically or through the media. If someone does decide to use sex appeal as a means of getting attention, however, they cannot be upset when people think of them in a sexual way.
Dave Chappelle on the subject: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8K1KHqi9bXc
It is always open season on the wrong kind of people in the popular media. If he had done that with a picture of Queen Michelle there would have been an FBI investigation.
Damn that would be funny! The FBI and Secret Service would be putting the boots to Flynt right now.
nah, they'd just fed flynt into the soylent green grinder at one of the many FEMA kamps palin warned about. no muss, no fuss, just food
Remind me to get the Soylent Red from now on.
Seriously. Imagine of a republican group decided to destroy a pinata that looked like a governor they didn't like.
In a related vein: Is there anyone on Earth whose physical apprearance more precisely mirrors the condition of his soul than Larry Flynt?
If there is, the list would be pretty short.
Michael Moore is a distant second.
Nancy Pelosi.
Joy Behar.
When Behar flashes her "smug" look she is the spitting image of Bette Midler in Hocus Pocus.
So your point would be that the condition of his soul is Jabba the Hutt?
More like David Lynch's Baron Harkonnen.
Uh, i need to read downthread a little.
George Soros
No one should act surprised that Larry Flynt publishes a low brow, offensive picture aimed at a public figure.
And anyway, he just did in a magazine what I am sure many commenters on here do in their minds every time they see her.
Projection is the new denial.
Hey, wait!
There is a significant difference here.
Hustler imagined 'a' penis in her mouth.
Whereas in 'my' mind...
And anyway, he just did in a magazine what I am sure many commenters on here do in their minds every time they see her.
Break out photoshop?
The most surprising part of this story to me is that Hustler Magazine is still in business.
Larry Flynt is Baron Harkonnen? Things are begining to make more sense to me now.
You won the thread. I award you 1 gram of the spice melange, which should be plenty sufficient to purchase your own planet.
dumb ideas like defunding Planned Parenthood
Well, in fairness, defunding PP is pretty stupid.
I mean what do we expect - that they continue to operate using money they make from their high-quality reproductive health services, coupled with voluntary donations from the countless One Percenters who support their mission?
That's crazy talk!!
Wait a second, since when doesn't your stereotype of 1%ers include knocking up secretaries and making her get an anonymous abortion? If you're going to base your views of people off of soap operas, please be consistent.
It is absolutely tasteless. Buuut, if Sandra Fluke is outraged by it I can't help but like it just a little bit.
Is she? And remember, the major media had kittens over Limbaugh calling Fluke a whore. Yet, not a peep about this.
*facepalm*
John, you gotta read the articles.
Now I see it. Some of the longer posts cause me to zone out. I skim a lot of Reason.
John comes here for the centerfold.
More or less.
It's not the picture that matters, but who is in it.
Had the pic been Fluke with a photoshopped dick in her mouth, you can be sure it would have been all over the major media.
Principals matter. Principles, not so much.
They would say that SE Cupp is a public figure.
This one is healthier than the earlier version, as those offended by the image as truly pathetic, sad, and indecent (count me in) aren't talking about censorship but about public shaming.
Hear, hear!
I think there was a difference in that what Flynt was doing decades ago was fairly new. Way back when, most people hadn't seen people print stuff like what he printed about Falwell before.
Now that people can write stuff like that themselves on the interwebs if they want to, it isn't as impressive or new as it used to be.
Flynt's basically just another troll here.
Except that has been Flynt's schtick for a long time.
Assholes don't make us great. Assholes make us assholes.
What has made us great (among other things) was having the wisdom to not prevent assholes from saying whatever asshole thing comes to their asshole minds. Because that's their--and our--right as free people.
How else would we find out who is, and who isn't, an asshole? Seriously -- total suppression of speech, were it possible, would not prevent assholes, it would just prevent us knowing who they are.
Why should the law punish gay bar owner for putting up a sign saying "No Breeders Allowed", or a black barbershop owner from putting up a sign saying "Whitey Ain't Welcome"?
I would prefer it that way since we'd all know which businsses to avoid patronizing.
I'm amazed at how the left fails to realize that black's and other "vulnerable" groups together are a pretty big market and it would be just plain irrational for anyone to deny them their business by alienating any of them.
What about the left is rational?
the left never sees these things through the prism of business, it sees through the lens of victimhood. Business A hates blacks and that is thought crime; therefore, the govt must come in and force Business A to cater to people who know the business does not want them.
In the real world, people learn about Business A's practice, decide against patronizing it, tell their friends who do likewise, and the market roots out the problem. Liberals do not understand that most people are capable of spotting asshole behavior without the govt's help.
My point, precisely -- I want to know those things.
This actually happened in a way, here in STL. A lesbian bar was sued when they refused to hire a straight male bartender who was otherwise qualified to do the job. The place just closed up show rather than fight the suit or hire the prick.
Why on Earth shouldn't lesbian bar owners be able to hire those they, and their clientele, feel at ease around?
"Civil rights" laws are destroying actual civil rights.
But, but, but people have a right to sue anyone who dares to say "No".
The kick in the ass is that everyone lost here: The guy still didn't get the bartending gig, the bar owners lost their business and the lesbian clientele lost their watering hole.
And somewhere in the background, Rush's "The Trees" plays.
The problem is, sometimes publicity is good for the assholes.
Everyone knew Flynt was an asshole before this.
I'm going to be generous and assume that "assholes" in this context is a crass, edgy way of referring to those who buck conventional wisdom and authority.
Oh yeah, Larry Flynt is a real intellectual force speaking truth to power. Defacing the picture of one of the president's critics.
This isn't saying something, it's fraudulently defacing the image of a person's face.
I would have no problem with Flynt getting his pants sued off over this, and he probably will.
I'm more dismayed by Flynt's lame-ass comflating of all things anti-government spending to "reading too much Ayn Rand". I get no one reads Hustler for the political commentary, but c'mon Larry, how about being more original that tired cliche?
You'd think, after being in the State's croshairs, Larry would have a better appreciation for someone who led the fight to defang same. Larry seems to be one of those "liberals" who is determined to erect (no pun intended) a pokenose Superstate under the assumption that it will be run by him and those of a like mind. That doesn't usually work out so well.
Well, since Flynt can't even ise his own dick anymore, he's trying to fuck everyone else with the Phallic State.
S.E. Cupp is a lovely young lady who read too much Ayn Rand in high school and ended up joining the dark side
Linking a conservative to Ayn Rand is fast becoming the easiest way to tell when someone is attempting to speak way above their knowledge.
Is there any one person more wrongly invoked than Ayn Rand? Any time anyone other than a libertarian criticizes her, they make it instantly obvious they never read her. I have my own set of issues with Rand, but every airheaded TEAM fluffer gets is exactly wrong every single time.
If there is, I can't think of them. It is funny as hell. Cupp is a professed Christian.
She's actually a professed atheist.
You are right. I was thinking of Mary Katherine Hamm. I lose track of my right wing cheese cake. I need to go back to scoring at home.
Exactly.
I'll go with Jesus.
Without a straw Ayn, many statist columnists would be out of work. Not that there would be anything wrong with that.
Does Reason ever revoke it's "Hero of Freedom" awards? Or is it irrevocable, like the Pulitzer Prize to Walter Duranty?
PHOTOSHOP A HAND GRENADE BEING FORCED INTO FLYNT'S FAT GOOBER ASS.
You think an actual one doesn't exist someplace?
When you wrestle with a pig...
You end up covered in bacon!
This dude really does not make a whole lot of sense man. WOw.
http://www.Privacy-Geeks.tk
Playing the victim seldom works out the way you want, especially if you're on the right. And once you resort to what Flynt did, you've basically lost the battle of ideas. So Cupp should have simply accepted Flynt's surrender.
Really, if your best response to someone you disagree with is to put a cock in her mouth, it's well past time to consider retirement. Or at least to consider repeating the 6th grade.
Or join the NYPD.
If the media doesn't splash this all over the place, there are about 3 guys who would actually see this. But now Flynt gets his mug in the news. He gets to promote his company. And poke a conservative in the eye. Win, win, win for him.
Probably he had no idea about it until the media dust up. He just shows up for the press conferences.
If an asshole is an asshole and no one notices, will he continue to be an asshole?
I suspect that a lot of folks are hearing about S.E. Cupp for the first time because of this, too. Her Q rating has definitely jumped a notch. She's pretty much been in the minor leagues of the "conservative hotties on TV" team up till now.
As I told Pro Liberate above, it is a symbiotic relationship. Cupp is a total self promoter. If she were being honest, I doubt she is too upset about this. This is a total boost for her Q rating and career. And for Cupp, that is what it is all about. If she was that concerned with how people view her, she wouldn't be on Fox showing her legs every chance she gets.
My impression of Cupp has been that she's trying to position herself as the "thinking man's Ann Coulter." Wittier and less frumpy than Michelle Malkin or Mary Katherine Ham, but without Coulter's uber-snark and "Connecticut ice princess" vibe.
She is a poor substitute. Love or hate Coulter, Coulter is one of the great polemic writers of our age. Cupp isn't even in her league.
It's sad to see Larry Flynt move away from Hustler's long tradition of elegance and class.
Looks about right to me.
What's the big deal?
Drawing pictures of people with dicks in their mouths on the bathroom wall is middle school activity.
The one thing SE Cupp can do is walk away from this with her head high. Which is more than can be said for Larry Flynt.
Flynt can't walk at all.
To be nonpartisan, and to show that their intent wasn't sexist, they should photoshop a picture of Barack Obama eating an entire bag of dicks in the next issue.
But then I'd have to go out and buy a Hustler to see it.
Collectors Edition.
WWBD? (What would Breitbart do?)
You know how we solve this problem? Someone just Photoshop eight cocks of every color of the glorious human rainbow jizzing on Larry Flynt's face, then post it on every internet forum you can find (with Hustler's disclaimer that it never actually happened).
Hey Nick,
I wonder how cool you'd think this stunt was if that was a picture of your mother with a big hard throbbing dick in her mouth.
I'm going to say what no one else has or would, which is this non-affair reflects poorly on the judgement or selection process Reason used (granted a long long time again). Now, Reason - step right up to the bar and defend your choices, or say you were mistaken, or otherwise, comment on your hero worship for the king of smut.
I'm okay with any of those except the sound of silence. That is implicit acceptance and condoning Flynt's action with the Cobb pic. Kind of, you know, sort of with that smug little elite we know better than you look that many progressives have?
You can do better so let's hear it.
Thanks.
But that said, if she doesn't like to be "objectified" or have people comment on her looks, then she ought to not go on Fox News in a skirt three inches above her knees sitting with her legs to the camera, something she does on a regular basis.
Next time, just go whole hog and fulminate for the mandatory pinning of a scarlet letter to the breast of her plain cotton blouse, whenever daring to appear in public.
::Infinite Facepalm Loop::
Someone should photoshop Obama taking it in the rear from Dan Savage. Now that would be knee slapping fucking hilarious. Nothing like bullying people because of their political views.
I can understand Flynt wanting to fight censorious, porn-hunting social-conservatives who threaten his livelihood. But if he's a "liberal" (i.e., a State-fellator except when his ox is gored) he's deluding himself if he thinks we can have statism AND porn. Even if the reigning statists are okay with porn, statist economics cause economic disruption and diminished prosperity. People won't be able to afford skin magazines when they're lucky to scrape up money for groceries and the rent. (And this goes out to you, too, Hef.)
two initials...one cupp.
Give this person a medal.
I think the bigger point to made here is that if it wasn't for "people who read a little too much Ayn Rand in high school" and that maybe we should have a little more freedom, how well off would Larry Flint be?
thought that maybe we should have a little more freedom
