The first U.S. citizen arrested on American soil with the help of a Predator drone is challenging the use of the unmanned aerial vehicle in his arrest.
The drone arrested him when it found him recording video of it in public.
Wouldn't he have had the right to shoot it down under the Stand Your Ground law?
und vice versa since corporate drones obviously have de same rights as citizens.
The ones that are citizens certainly do.
He should have a right under the Shoot Down The Fucking Drone Law. But nobody's passed it yet.
I have to say, I don't really see a problem with how the drone was used in this case. It doesn't seem like it was used to spy on him, but rather was called in to end a 16 hour standoff without bloodshed.
Of course, it doesn't help that the man is not a very sympathetic character.
How is it any different than a helicopter?
Yeah. Not really seeing the issue here.
Oh! Oh! I know this one!
Q: How is an unmanned drone different from a police-manned helicopter?
A: It doesn't get overtime or a pension.
Wrong. Skynet will take care of that soon enough.
Alternate response: Fewer canine fatalities.
Even less accountability?
negative accountability is unphysical.
Let me get this straight: Some of us are questioning why we shouldn't make survailling Americans easier?
Jebus fucking wept.
Seeing that it had nothing to do with surveillance, your point is moot.
Especially since they had a warrant to go on the property and arrest them. I don't see a problem really. I'm not wild about the idea of more overhead surveillance being possible and likely, but I doubt there is a legal problem. Anyone can get in a small plane or helicopter and fly over wherever they want.
Brossart, an alleged anti-government "sovereignist," believed he should have been able to keep the cows, so he and two family members chased police off his land with high powered rifles.
The first U.S. citizen arrested on American soil with the help of a Predator drone is challenging the use of the unmanned aerial vehicle in his arrest.
Well, you can't say that this flake is inconsistent anyway.
high powered rifles.
Barrett .50s?
Because these days, that's about the only rifle that qualifies as "high powered" in my book.
All in the definition I guess. But if you have ever seen the wound that even a good .270 much less an 8mm leaves, I think you might adjust your opinion.
I'm quite familiar with the wounds a .300 Win Mag leaves (roughly, a saucer-size exit wound on a man-sized torso).
High-powered is a relative term, IMO. Compared to a Barrett, I don't think any rifle is "high-powered."
Compared to a cruise missile, no rifle is high powered. None the less, with a lucky shot I can kill you at a 1000 yards with a solid .306. A really good shooter with a clear shot on a windless day doesn't even have to get lucky.
That sounds pretty "high powered" to me.
Compared to a cruise missile, no rifle is high powered. >/i>
Well, we were talking about high-powered rifles.
One can be high-powered without being the highest powered.
A valid point.
Once you get up into the big mags, they're high-powered. A .338 Lapua is a high-powered rifle, as is .460 Weatherby. Hell, even the venerable .600 Nitro is high-powered. Is it as high-powered as .50 BMG? No, but you're setting the standard at the peak of the mountain. One can be high-powered without being the highest powered.
if drones are called in for a dispute over cows, can't wait to see what happens with something more serious. Yeah, this will end well.
Dude, the cops went to recover someone else's private property - the cows - from a guy who claimed they were now his because they wandered onto his land. When the cops showed up he starts threatening them with rifles. They didn't fly the drone in to settle "a dispute over some cows."
I don't have a problem with this, other than the depressing knowledge that it will lead to next week's story of drones being used as warrantless surveillance.
You'd think they'd give the domestic version a different name, like Guardian drone.
No ticky no washy
Lubbock Police Sergeant Jonathan Stewart disagrees. He says this business is considered a sexually oriented business. That requires a permit to operate in the city limits. Lubbock Fantasy Maid Service does not have one. So Stewart says they cannot operate.
Working girls, trying to put themselves through Tech (or make enough money to GTFO of Lubbock) harassed by cops. Leave those poor girls alone.
indeed since they only gotta a few years where it still works. then off to teh fatz farm.
I see you've been to Lubbock, too.
having never been to Lubbock, I could have guessed has much. It's in the name, it sounds fat, like it want's to go to the kitchen for another pair of ice cream sandwiches, but getting up...would...just...be...tooo....hard. Lubbock.

I feel sure, somehow, that Sergeant Stewart has made the rounds of local Hooters and Hooters-esque establishment to make sure their, ahem, credentials are in order.
I just don't see how cleaning some dude's shitty toilet in the buff is sanitary. I'm thinking a little Comet in the cooch accident would burn like hell.

How Couples Decide When to Retire
The woman in the first segment sounds like a real schadenfrau.
The man ought to retire. . .his wife and hire one of those nude maids.
Schadenfrau is an understatement
No go. "I have told him he has to stay working until the last kid is out of college in four years," Ms. Ewing says. "For me it would be annoying not to have someone pulling their weight. I realize he's older. But on a personal level, I don't see it as positive. My perspective is he would putter around the house."
Poor guy. Tell the brats to get a job and the wife to go fuck herself.
This is why pre-nups exist. Don't get married without one.
"You want nice things, you keep working, shrew."
That's the essence of it, obviously. Saying her husband would be less healthy if he could ditch the two hour plus commute is fucking bullshit. I promise you, if I could ditch my 90-120 minute commute, I'd be getting a hell of a lot more exercise.
Yeah, you'd hire the nude maid too.
my dad retired at 55. I'm aiming for a lower year than that.
a meager 40 generations from now, your progeny will be retiring in their teens. *highfive*
Same here (on my Dad retiring). I'm hoping for about the same, myself.
Fortunately, Mrs. Dean insists on working, and has no problem with me retiring "early".
I figure when I have the Rancho Dean outside of Santa Fe completely paid for, I'll quit working full time, maybe pick up a few retainers on the side when I want some shiny toys.
Is there a big market for retainers in Santa Fe? I would think you'd have more luck in the UK.
Not covered under NHS. As one can plainly see.
FREE HEALTH CARE! NHS FTW!
Well then, it's obvious that so many Brits have bad teeth because they choose to. If they can get their grill fixed for free I can't see any other reason not to.
There's too much chance of outliving your assets these days. I would be too nervous to retire young, I think.
Barring the off-chance that I become a multi-millionaire, of course.
Barring the off-chance that I become a multi-millionairemulti-billionaire, of course.
Bernanke'd it for you.
I just turned 55. I'm thinking that I'll work until 72 or even 75, assuming they don't throw me out.
My dad retired at 52, did a bunch of traveling and then unretired at 55. He got bored as shit really quick. I have no plan on beating him to retirement even if I can afford it.
My dad, the cop, retired when he was 49. I'm already a year over that mark -- and no end in sight.
It doesn't help that I've got two kids in college and two in kindergarten.
But then, my job's pretty sweet. So there's that. (Not that I'd do it if they didn't pay me.)
My dad did the same...he's been retired for almost 20 years now and fucking loving it. He also had IBM stock options from the early 1960's. I don't have that kinda luck. At this rate I'll be working til I'm 100.
I've already committed to sailing around the world when I turn 50. And now, I'm gonna need a bigger boat with Banjos and (hopefully) a couple more kids. While on that 2-year journey, I hope to find a place to live. If not, I'll probably go back to work when I get back.
If the WSJ had a sense of humor, they'd juxtapose this with another "Where Have the Good Men Gone?" piece lamenting extended adolescence in males and wondering why the won't grow up and get married.
Which would you rather read: 1) high-fat foods lead to injury or 2) gravy-wrestling model severely injured by roommate's sex romp?

Goddam. Taking a wrench to someone's head for interrupting a toss is a little over the line.

Say what you will, I think she looks pretty good. If liking curvy women is wrong then I don't want to be right.
I think she looks like a tub of lard. Nobody wants to see fat folds on a naked model. Well, nobody except chubby chasers.

THAT'S RACIST!
You're right! How insensitive of me!
Paging John...Paging John. Please pick up the caucasian phone...
She's close to my upper limit, sizewise. I'm not saying she's hot, or even that she's not chubby. She is. I'm just not seeing any disgusting fat on her.
But it doesn't matter. There's no point in debating where the line between a T&A lover and chubby chaser is. To each their own.
What I hate more is the spray on tan. Please stop after the first coat!

The best part about gays increasingly gaining spousal and partner rights is that it's going to throw the anti-male divorce system completely out of whack.
And she can't live on $23K a month? Even in California, that elicits a "WTF?" I could literally not work the rest of my life and still be able to house, feed, and clothe the kids and myself with no problems at all.
Eric Holder, bad AG or worst AG?
"The Zimmerman family is in hiding because of the threats that have been made against us, yet the DOJ has maintained an eerie silence on this matter. These threats are very public. If you haven't been paying attention just do a Google search and you will find plenty. Since when can a group of people in the United States put a bounty on someone's head, circulate Wanted posters publicly, and still be walking the streets?"
Sorry honey, you are a Latin. And Eric really doesn't give a shit about your safety or well being. You have to be black to get the protection of the DOJ.
He's on the side of the Etruscans?
C'mon, the New Black Panthers are like three crazy guys. Zimmerman has nothing to worry about, right?
If P Diddy were to join the Black Panther party, "Vote or Die" would become one vicious circle for George Zimmerman
Nope, sorry.
I was on the side of the pro-lifers who did this, and this is even more restrained and within-the-law than that was.
The posters call for a citizens' arrest. Tough luck.
Excellent question.
The New Black Panthers obviously took a lesson from the immunity Holder gave them in the voter intimidation case.
You get more of what you reward, and less of what you punish.

What on Earth did poor Babar get imprisoned for anyway?
I shouldn't have stopped to look up his wife's name!
They Qaddafi'd Babar. After an 80 year reign of terror as the King of Elephants the elephant insurgency with help from NATO finally brought that fucker down.
Huh, I might have guessed it was just for being French in England.
Barbar does not accept your white man colonial distiction!
Babar celebrates his proud African roots.
Also, I feel if Babar had been real, he'd be like that Ethopian king the Rastafarians worshipped.
But, you know, an elephant.
Babar is real! Ganesh??? Anyone?
Yeah. I thought they weren't allowed to keep elephants captive anymore.
How is his wife, Celeste, taking it? Is Cornelius his legal counsel?
Dr. Joseph Dolan: Right. Now, how long have you been having these pains, Mr. Barber?
Fletch: That's Babar.
Dr. Joseph Dolan: Two b's?
Fletch: One. B-A-B-A-R.
Dr. Joseph Dolan: That's two.
Fletch: Yeah, but not right next to each other. I thought that's what you meant.
Dr. Joseph Dolan: Isn't there a children's book about an elephant named Babar?
Fletch: I don't know. I don't have any.
Dr. Joseph Dolan: No children?
Fletch: No, elephant books.

Parsing the uncomfortable connections between last week's Oklahoma killings and the death of Trayvon Martin.

No he is an Indian White. A White Indian would be a white man who calls himself an Indian.
I think my kitchen is painted in Indian white.
Racist!!
To be fair, I think they changed the name of the paint to Old Deer Antler a few years ago. Lowe's is so PC now.
This case is close to my backyard. England claims, and confirmed, that he is a member of the Cherokee tribe.
As an added bonus, noted Race Pimp, Al Sharpton, is reportedly coming to town.
I don't see why. The perps were caught within 24 hrs of the last shooting, and so far there haven't been any calls for protests, riots, looting, or racial retribution. This one is an open and shut case; the only thing that might get the public in a tizzy is if the perps are not charged with "hate crimes." They will never see the outside of Big Mac, and will probably get the death penalty. If not the formal death penalty, the death penalty of the "on the iside" variety.
And the colour to which you are referring, dear Saccharin Man, is Sainted Buffalo White.
I should know, it's the colour scheme of my kitchen (with H&R Block Green as an accent.)

I recall that a week or so ago, one of Z's neighbors said the community had been hit by a half dozen or more burglaries. Have not seen if any media source has debunked that claim, which hints that it may be true and gives some context as to why Z followed teh kid. Still don't think neighborhood watch should be leaving vehicles and following individuals, but if the burglary story is true, then George's suspicion makes some sense.
And Trayvon was caught at school with 12 pieces of women's jewelry. ASnd while it is true that he went to the store to buy candy, that doesn't rule out that he was looking for a house to jack on the way home. Recall that it was raining that night and yet, the kid was prowling around between houses. Who prowls around in the rain?
"it's impossible not to ask questions about the role of race in vigilantism"
Vigilantism? Sounds like a plain old hate crime. If that's vigilantism, then the child-murdering Muslim in France recently was Frank Castle.
I read a comment suggesting he was pissed off because a black guy killed his father a couple of years ago -- if anything, that incident (as described by random internet commenter, take it for what it's worth) sounds more Trayvon, in reverse -- white guy without a gun gets pissed off and tries to administer beatdown to black guy with a gun, white guy gets shot, black guy claims self-defense, no charges.
The Washington Post's Josh Hicks evaluates Barack Obama's comments last week on the Supreme Court. But he doesn't check the president's actual words. Rather, "we [sic] took the liberty of re-phrasing the president's initial remarks to get at his overarching message":
We removed the word "unprecedented," since Obama walked that back, and we inserted the word "economic" before "law," since the president added that distinction in his follow-up. We kept the word "extraordinary" and the part about judicial activism, since Obama never backed away from any of that.
Even the fictitious quote gets two "Pinocchios," though it seems to us Hicks himself deserves to be stuck with however many Pinocchios the president lost when Hicks fictionalized the quote.

This should be an improvement. Newspapers can rewrite what Barry O says and for TV they can have a voice over (Morgan Freeman, of course) for everything he says. They'd translate it into non-authoritarian, non-douchebagian language. It's really a great solution.
It's amusing how, even though rewriting or prewriting his words is one of their favorite hobbies, the intellectual left can't admit that they don't like Obama very much.
Better yet

Obama's Revenue Soup
A history lesson on capital gains taxes.
http://online.wsj.com/article/.....on_LEADTop
I aspire to qualify for this tax, someday.
Not to mention the even larger hike in dividend taxes, which may very well (a) cause a wave of selling of dividend-paying stocks, thereby depressing capital gain realization in future years, and (b) cause companies to shy away from using cash to increase dividends, thereby depressing revenue from taxes on dividends. Oh, and all that overseas cash will remain overseas.
But Obama does not care -- as he said, getting less revenue from investors is somehow a matter of "fairness."
Mr. Obama's plan would raise the capital-gains rate on January 1 to 20% on those who earn more than $200,000 ($250,000 for couples), plus a 3.8% investment surtax to finance ObamaCare. That 23.8% rate amounts to a nearly 60% increase from the 15% rate in effect since 2003. And that's without his new "Buffett rule," which would take the rate to 30% for many taxpayers.
Because the problem is too much investment and too much economic growth.
I used to think Obama didn't know raising the cost of investment would mean less investment than there would have been otherwise. I used to think Obama didn't know investment and economic growth had anything to do with each other...
Now I just think it's a campaign issue, and he doesn't give a damn about the economy--he just wants to be reelected.
He isn't pushing this to raise $700 billion; he's doing this because there are so many slackers out there who think sticking it to the rich is the whole purpose of government.
High cap gains taxes also restrict the mobility of capital, which keeps it from moving from low-return/productivity to high-return/productivity investments.
You can guess what that does to the economy.
Obama doesn't care what this policy would do to the country.
He just wants to put the Republicans on the record in an election year as being against soaking the rich.
and he is counting on a public too stupid and/or too apathetic to find out that the rich are already paying a hefty share of the tax bill.
I suspect a big chunk of the electorate is delighted that the rich are already carrying the load, and are euphoric at the possibility of sticking it to them even harder.
I think RC Dean is right.
And I think this bill has very little chance of passing.
It's just a proposal to make headlines the Obama campaign thinks will benefit them.
Which isn't to say Obama doesn't believe in a lot of the stupid things he proposes. It's just that, lately, it's been more about getting reelected.
If he were free from his concerns about getting reelected, he'd go back to being the Obama he was before the Tea Party surge.
We should try to remind people of that. If you help reelect Obama, you won't be getting the Obama we've seen over the past two years; you'll be getting TARP/ObamaCare/UAW Action Obama with the Kung Fu Grip.
If Team Red is smart, they'll attach this idiotic tax increase to a balanced budget full of massive spending cuts and put it on his desk. Let him veto his own proposal.
If Team Red is smart
There's your problem. Why go on?
'with the Kung Fu Grip'
and life-like hair.
If the tax is reduced to zero, then the revenue generated should be infinite. Or something like that.

The longer a student is in college the less they care about racial understanding. I guess the longer you are exposed to hypocrisy, double standards and hate studies, the less impressed you are by its rhetoric.
The only way to solve this problem is to hire More deans of multi-cultural diversity to run seminars on promoting racial understanding!
I can't imagine that shit resonates with anyone unless they're getting one of the victimology degrees. Repeated exposure only reinforces how utterly ridiculous it is.
You tell people they are either (a) entitled special snowflake victims or (b) genetically racist scum, and I don't see any reason for anyone to be interested in reconciliation.
This is dependent on how melanin challenged (and arguably gendered) said "special snowflake" is.
Bitterness Studies has a pretty cut and dried admissions criteria.
Do you mean "melanin challenged" or "lacks a penis"? Because only white women are special snowflakes. White men are all hate-filled scum.
Read it again, dearest sloopy, and all shall be answered...
I think this reinforces your point:
The paper's authors say these data challenge the conventional wisdom about college and race: the findings suggest that for most students, being in college has no impact on a desire to promote racial understanding, and that those who change do so in the direction of being less committed to intergroup understanding.
A lot of colleges these days are doing freshman indoctrination groups where they basically get students to admit how racist/sexist/otherist they are. This approach works fine for people fresh out of high school, where peer pressure and the desire to fit in (and the desire of males to bang the "I HATE YOU DADDY" femsluts) tends to override their normal inclinations towards not giving a fuck about race.
By the end of college, most students are typically deep into their majors and have a small circle of friends who accept them for who they really are. Hence, the need to fit into the larger college dynamic of "Celebrating Vibrant Diversity!!111!!" gets shoved way down the list of college survival priorities.
maybe the longer student are in college, the more they begin to think for themselves. Now, that would be a quantum leap forward.

So it would appear that there is some kind of weird, top secret collusion on here to paint female voters in the absolutely worst possible light. We're talking Montag's wife from Fahrenheit 451 here people.

Flash mob robs a store in Oregon. Frankly I think the solution is for a few store owners to shoot them. There is no way to stop or deter this. A huge group of people can easily overpower the staff. And they can get away before the cops get there. So it is really the perfect crime. So it is no surprise it is happening more and more.
Under normal circumstances, I don't think someone ought to be shot for robbing a store. But this has now become organized looting. And if you are part of a mob looting a store, you ought to get what is coming to you.
Portland Police are investigating. Employees at the store are hoping someone can recognize the kids and call police.
It would be nice if the article had some information about what they looked like. I wonder why they chose not to.
I wonder.
It's going to be hard to identify them since they all look like Obama's son. So many people like that running around these days. Like the guys who beat up and robbed the tourist in Baltimore over St. Patrick's Day weekend.
Are we sure?
This is Portland.
They could be Occupy puppeteers "taking a revolutionary action" or something.
The next "Escape From" movie should be in Portland. It was fenced in to trap all the hipsters and greens, and Kurt Russell has 24 hours to escape the savage gangs on solar-powered sail cars.
The dream is alive in Portland
From the linked video: it's a bunch of black kids.
Oh, OK.
I didn't realize they had a lot of black people in Portland.
Not trying to be racist, I really didn't know that.
My first reaction was that it was a bunch of crusty street punks (white kids). I didn't think there were that many black people in Portland either. The video tells a different tale.
hard to imagine crusty, white street punks in Portland. Crunchy, berkenstock-wearing, chain-smoking slackers, not a problem.
Ah, thanks. It's always good to get the answers to those rhetorical questions.
Pictures don't count as information about what they looked like?
Putting the "mob" in "flashmob".
Also: Since most stores don't physically restrain shoplifters, couldn't any group of people simply walk in and take things? If there are enough of them, it may become impractical to even try to identify them.
There is no way to stop or deter this. A huge group of people can easily overpower the staff.
_________________
You can deter it if the mob knows there is a high liklihood that some among them will get shot. You can't shoot an entire mass of people, but it seems to me the mob is a lot less likely to form if if knows it will face gunfire.
Exactly. This is no longer a normal robbery. It is looting. And there is no reason to believe it won't continue to happen more and more until there is some kind of downside, like getting shot, to doing it.
If you shoot one of them, get ready to be tarred and feathered as a racist by the media until you are forced into quitting your job, selling your house, and moving to another town where people won't recognize you.
I am quite sure of that. So I guess we can all just not have stores anymore since there is no way for the owners to prevent them from being looted.
I can see that happening if you decide you think someone looks like they might be about to loot at sometime in the next 20 minutes, and shoot them prophylactically.
But most "store owner shoots robber" stories I see paint the store owner as a hero. Even in lefty papers like the Boston Globe.
Fire birdshot. First one into the ceiling. Wait 10 seconds, then fire at the legs of anyone not jamming the exits.
Salt rocks. That is an excellent idea. Don't kill them just make sure they really don't want to pull such a stunt again.
Seems to me that firing non-lethal rounds is a good way to get yourself killed.
Keep a large bore pistol as a backup just in case someone decides to shoot back.
It's not even about someone shooting back. A mob is a mob is a mob. Blunt force trama is deadly too.
So yeah, if you try to be "nice" and not kill someone with the first shot, you better have a back up plan.
2 Shotguns: one with lethal rounds, one with rock-salt.
1 shotgun, 2 barrels.
Or one with a magazine, load one rock salt, one bird shot and two buckshot.
When I'm at my mountain retreat, I keep the shotgun loaded thusly in case of unwanted black bears/mountain lions on premises: Nonlethal bean bag, nonlethal rubber dart, slug.
Fuck that.
Before you pull the trigger, you need to be sure. However, if you're going to shoot someone, shoot to kill.
The likelihood being sued by someone for emotional damage and pain and suffering is a lot lower if they're dead.
Most of us just say rock salt. Is English your second language? j/k
If you could get your staff to drop the anti-burglary grates over the exits to trap them inside, that would be a nice touch.
Of course, you don't want to be trapped with a mob that you haven't subdued with shotguns, so this is in addition to, not instead of, armed response.
I have to agree. If a couple of the shits doing this sort of stuff in England last year had gotten shot, I bet it would have quieted down a lot faster.
Under normal circumstances, I don't think someone ought to be shot for robbing a store. But this has now become organized looting. And if you are part of a mob looting a store, you ought to get what is coming to you.
One of the most memorable photos I saw from the Rodney King riots was a group of Koreans sitting on top of their store with rifles, looking shoot anyone that dared try to rob the place.
What about a can of crowd control pepper spray? Hose down the whole group. Then call the cops.

What is the total income tax on a million dollars in AGI? It has to be about $250,000, if not more. And how is this not enough to promote "shared sacrifice?" Even 15% of a million bucks in dividends or cap gains is shitload of money, especially when the money's being taxed twice.
Personally, federal income taxes are my single largest annual expense -- and by a mile. The notion that I am not paying my "fair share," while 50% of taxpayers have no incone tax liability, is offensive. I fucking hate these class warfare MFers.
Hmm. Let me see. The next biggest expense would be mortgage. If I go all in and include PITI as one expense, fed income tax is still about 30% higher than my mortgage.
My total mortgage expense is about, call it, 25% of my federal income tax bill.
For what I pay in income taxes, the feds should provide me with a median family to do the chores.

First step: Move to a major metropolitan area with a strong downtown.
I made it 3 paragraphs. Until he started the PoMo: "I had become a strange being, studied by engineers, inhabiting environments whose physical features are determined by a rulebook-enshrined average 3 foot-per-second walking speed"
So let me get this straight. You want to make cities more walkable, but you don't want to apply science to it? We should figure out a way to meet the needs of each delicate snowflake who chooses to walk? Go suck on a tailpipe and stop wasting good oxygen.
Jesus Christ.

Many hybrid-car owners buy once -- but not again, Polk study says
http://www.latimes.com/busines.....6214.story
I can't imagine buying a hybrid because the technology is so inelegant and the performance sucks. Hybrids are just a rolling kludge.
I expect owners find that out and decide not to play again.
Exactly. And putting them on an already efficient car like a Civic is especially stupid.
On the other hand, I'm enough of a nerd that if somebody comes out with a fuel cell electric vehicle, I'd give it a hard look.
But I sincerely doubt I'm giving up my V8s anytime soon. When we're all living in Lord Humungus's wasteland, I will be driving one of the last V8s and fighting over gasoline.
Fuel cells would be fantastic. The only problem is that there is no cheap way to produce pure hydrogen in the kind of quantities you would need.
Electrolysis from seawater powered by a nuke plant. Hell, I think you could probably make a go of it with one of the Hyperion reactors.
Come on, there's water all over the place. How hard can it be to chop the H atom off?

I wonder how pure oxygen is usually produced? Probably just separated from the air, I woudl guess.

These guys are on the edge of viability. They need a couple years to get enough testing in, but they're a serious startup. I spent about an hour with them talking about writing quality and product tracking software. Unfortunately they had no idea what custom programming costs and were shocked and dismayed at what it actually cost.
as a programmer, dealing with non-programmers is a case of hair-pulling.
Them: "We want some code that does X. Can you finish it by tomorrow?"
Me: "Are you really sure you want X? Because that doesn't fit with our current system and would require a new database table. Also, who is going to enter in the new set of data and maintain the changes? etc etc."
I think the average user looks at computers as "magic boxes".
I think the average user looks at computers as "magic boxes".
Bingo. I work with said average users every day.
These guys are PhD engineers and physicists and had written some pretty complex scripts and Excel interop stuff. However, I knew the meeting was doomed to failure when they complained about the guy "who wanted to charge us $5000 just to tell us how much it was going to cost and how long it was gonna take!"
At that point I just started asking questions about their product because I'm a ChemE and they have some cool shit going on.
I have to admit to being a little sympathetic to their position.
I'm a home-brew, "Let's look some code up on Google" kind of guy. I've been coming up with custom applications to fit one-off workplace needs for years. When I call in somebody from the outside, it's generally because I want them to professionalize or up-size something that's been running "OK" in my spaghetti-code, kludgy version.
So when they want 10 grand just to THINK ABOUT stuff I don't think should be that complicated to produce as a deliverable, I squint at them a little. Because I'm applying the pseudoGroucho rule, "If I can almost do it myself, it can't possibly be that valuable."
The thing is, someone is going to spend 80-100 hours coming up with a solution that fits their need, then they can bid it to whomever they want. The consultant was doing them a favor (and hedging his own risk). If you want a professional product to manage your quality assurance and production from trial runs to small production runs you can (a)spend $250k on an out-of-the-box solution that's up and running in 8 weeks or (b)invest not less than $100k on getting a custom software suite that is up and running in 5-6 months or (c)keep kludging your own system together and hope you've got a homegrown talent that emerges.
From what I recall, they needed a database written and populated with their current data, integration between several automated machines and assembly workstations, and on-the-fly reporting. It was going to take me at least 100 hours to spec that out and probably 600-800 hours to build, test, and deploy. The going rate around here is not less than $65/hr for that type of work. So I suggest that $5k to have the system designed and specced is reasonable.
I learned very early on to ask, "What is it you're trying to accomplish? What is your actual goal?" when they ask for something like that. Because if you let them design the software, it will be horrendous.
They need a couple years to get enough testing in
That seems to be the case more often than not. Unfortunately, nobody wants to hear about what will be available in 10 years.
Sparky:
No one wants their car's fuel cell stack going bad in 3 years either. If you haven't done that sort of repetitive testing, nobody's gonna put it in their car.
No one wants their car's fuel cell stack going bad in 3 years either. If you haven't done that sort of repetitive testing, nobody's gonna put it in their car.
You may have me mistaken Brett, I'm agreeing with you. I understand it takes time to develop a viable product, especially one that will need to be mass produced. Unfortunately there are too many people in America that need instant results or they won't even look at something.
Looks like I am mistaken. Sorry, Sparky.
Also, that hydrogen's a shitty fuel.
Pure gasoline-quality alkanes produced by a chemical process rooted in artificial photosynthesis would be more more useful for transportation. If you want less CO2 in the atmosphere, just make sure to produce more than you consume and store the excess away in tanks. Sure, the tech doesn't exist yet, but it might be feasible, and it's definitely requires less investment in terms of changing distribution and automotive technology.
For homes, natural gas is still a better option than hydrogen, since natural gas distribution is fairly common, natgas fuel cells exist and are already, IIRC, in commercial use in some data centers, and since methane can be extracted from household waste without much energy added.
I'm just not impressed by the mileage that hybrids get. I had a 1990 Toyota Tercel for a long time and it got 40 MPG, easy. And it had a carburetor and a mechanical distributor. I'd take that car (for 1/3 the price) over a Prius or other compact hybrid any day.

They can't just say correlation doesn't equal causation. Because first they are too stupid to realize that. And second, they have been relying on so many bogus correlations to support their crackpot views over the years they have no choice but to believe this one.
Tough spot they are in.
Right.
I'll feel bad for fat chicks about this when they all personally and individually apologize to every person employed in the natural gas industry for trumpeting how dangerous fracking is based on an EPA test that was deceitfully designed.
I'll wait.

Its interesting because the author of the study has a Taubesian hypothesis of diabetes/insulin intolerance and spiking blood sugar of the mother during foetal brain development being the underlying cause.
Modern medical technology is amazing. It can keep alive people that would normally have died even 50 years ago. The best part is, we now get to preserve all of those genetic defects that have been killing people and pass them down the line to further generations. Because every life is precious and sacred now.
The best part is, we now get to preserve all of those genetic defects that have been killing people and pass them down the line to further generations.
Using this logic, no one should breed. There are these things called "recessive traits." Not to mention the aberrant, random mutation.
Which explains Ezra Klein.
1: Who's talking about a genetic problem?
2: Of course it's a conspiracy against the womyn. Who told her??
Seriously, who blabbed?
Guys, this is why we have meetings of The Patriarchy in The Super Duper Secret Tree Fort with the "No Girls Allowed" sign on it.
Guess we'll have to change it back to "No Fat Chicks"
Why not that other person who donates 50% of every child's genetic material- the father?
Does this mean the bitch lets her ex-husband spend 50% of the week with their kids?
In Jez's defense (how rarely I say that), a number of people are also pointing out how crazy defensive these people are, but I would still say that at least 50+% of the people are leaning towards this is some conspiracy against women/fat people.
What's pathetic about all the "fat-positive" bullshit they're spouting is that they're typically the first ones to mock "Wal-mart" types for being:
Too fat.
I think part of the problem is that Autism is being defined down so that only a few don't have it. Diabetes has been defined down the same way. If you don't have Diabetes then you have Autism if you don't have Cancer.
"Why not that other person who donates 50% of every child's genetic material- the father?"
Because the father only contributes the genetic material, and has little to do with the actual gestational environment (or, for breast-fed infants, the nutritional situation shortly after birth)? Genes aren't the be-all and end-all of physical factors in development.
Now those guys really seem to know what the deal is. Wow.

Bill Nelson throws President under the bus.
He'd do the same to you, Spaceman.
The media isn't talking about it, but there is a good possibility of a blood bath for the Democrats in the Senate this fall.
We'll see. Connie Mack IV has a reputation as a wildman. I'm not sure he can hack it in a general election against out of state money. LeMieux is the other R in the FL race and he has already been a senator (appointed, not elected) and didn't do a horrible job. But if Bill Nelson goes down, the Republicans will take at least 5 seats.
"Possibility"? It is just shy of a sure thing.
It really depends on the top of the ticket. If Romney win's, yeah theres a possibility he takes a lot of senate seats with him.
I think it is the opposite. I don't think the country trusts either side with control of both branches. If it looks like Obama is going to win, a whole lot of independents will ticket splits to ensure that what happened in 09 never happens again. If it looks like Romney is going to win, they are more likely to vote for the devil they know and re-elect the incumbent Democrat.
Im sure there are some that think that way. Hell, i vote for gridlock myself. But, historically that's not how most voters vote.

Syrian violence spills into Lebanon and Turkey.
It's just a matter of time until Hezbollah jumps in on the side of the Assad.
I mean, they're already verbally supporting Assad. They're about to start getting their hands dirty.
I have little doubt that plenty of those guys wearing Syrian army uniforms and shooting prisoners in the head are Hez.
Assad needs everybody he can get. This thing isn't going away. And if I were Assad, and I were having all this trouble, that would be my first impulse: if I can't get some help from Hezbollah when I need it, then why the hell am I writing all these checks?
Meanwhile, if the trend is Sunnis everywhere continuing to harden in their opposition to Iran and its allies, that's a great trend from an American security perspective.
I don't know where the chips would fall exactly if the Sunni majority prevailed in their fight against Assad, but it's hard to imagine the consequences being worse for U.S. security than they would be for Hezbollah and Iran. ...especially if Hezbollah were to start openly getting their hands dirty.
Just for the record, I hope Assad leaves tomorrow of his own accord, and they avoid any more bloodshed. Still, the realist/pragmatist in me sees things the way they are, not the way I want 'em to be.
io9 Seeks New York City Interns For Summer 2012, complete lack of knowledge about anything other than Dr. Who a must.
Special consideration given for "The Tom Baker Years."
Newark Mayor Cory Booker's feud with Devil's owner Jeff Vanderbeek gets interesting. Just in time for the playoffs, police presence around the stadium is reduced.
Newark may in fact be a shithole, but the area around Teh Rock is probably the safest area in town.
I was going to post this. I love how petty they're both being.
Downtown Newark and the Ironbound are fine. Anybody scared of going to the Rock is a moron.
I lived right by the Brendan Byrne Continental Izod center, the Devils move to Newark pretty much eliminated going to the games because it's such a pain in the ass to park over there the fabulous NJTransit buses and trains took me over an hour to get there. I've only seen about 5 or 6 games since the move.
You're right, all those Barry Melroses out there who think they're gonna get mugged just by stepping out of the arena are just idiots. The biggest threat to being in Newark is being from Newark.
Being inconvenienced by the move has to make you a member of a small minority. I've never fully thought it out since it's such a no-brainer to me (living at the nexus of the Corridor and Coast lines) that Prudential is an easier place to get to, but I'm curious as to how many people actually have a longer commute to/from there instead of the Meadowlands.
The biggest threat to being in Newark is being from Newark.
I'm keeping this for future use.
To take a train I'd have to go to Hoboken first and then on to Newark. There is a bus that takes me one block from the Rock, but there aren't any express buses going that way around game-time so I'd have to take the local which took just over an hour. Or I could drive down 21 and hope I find a lot that's not full and then pay $25 and walk several blocks.
I lived so close to the meadowlands that I could walk there in about 30 minutes. Driving took less than 10.
I'd say those inconvenienced by the move to Newark are everyone who lives in the southern horn of Bergen Co, parts of Passaic & Hudson Co.s as well. Not to mention everyone who thinks Newark is stuck in the nightmare that existed through the eighties & into the 90s when it really was a warzone - they just won't go cause they're scared.
Booker's certainly a great improvement over the last crook who held the office, but he's still just another pol. Vanderbeek is a rent-seeking scumbag.
Vanderbeek is a rent-seeking scumbag.
I agree. His acting career should have petered out long ago. No residuals.
Damnit, now I've got this in my head.
I'll be in my bunk.
Certainly true, but it's the nature of the beast with pro sports. The arenas are such a huge capital investment that they never pay out for the team itself (the Devils are caught in this right now; they paid for half the arena and can't afford the balloon payment on the loans they took out to finance it so it's going to end up carrying that debt perpetually). Unless you have some huge source of outside revenue the whole project never works.
I'm certainly happy to reap the benefits of that rent-seeking, though. CAA is/was the very definition of a shithole and had the added benefit of being near impossible to get in and out of.
CAA is/was the very definition of a shithole
I know everyone forgets about the Islanders, but Nassau is the absolute worst arena in the league. IIRC they couldn't use their own locker room for half a season a few years ago because of a sewage backup.
That whole rts. 3/120/17/Turnpike mess over in the meadowlands is a nightmare after games. Locals knew all the back roads. It never took me longer than 15 minutes to get home once I got out of the lots.
Ozzie Guillen suspended for 5 games for saying (in Miami) that Castro is an asshole, but you have to respect a guy who sticks around for 60 years.
My thing is, how would the Marlins know if anyone was boycotting their games since nobody goes to begin with?
I'm not sure how slagging Castro in Miami is going to upset more people than it will make happy.
You have clearly never been to Miami. Guillen deserved 10 games for being a moron. Cubans, and for good reason, don't forget Castro love, ever.
This is PC hypersensitivity. Clearly Guillen was not giving Castro "love".
I am kind of tired that everybody has to pander to the Cuban-American community in Florida. They don't live there anymore, and they need to get over it.
I am tired of lefty morons thinking communist killers are somehow different than any other killers. I agree with the Cubans.
But regardless, the Marlins are a business. And Cubans have every right to refuse to go to their games if they hire a Castro loving moron as manager. That is how a free society functions.
Given that and given that Cubans are huge part of the Miami market, the Marlins are totally right to suspend him or fire him. They run a business. Why would a business not discipline or fire an employee who offended their customers?
Its the part where he said he respected Castro for living through 60 years with people trying to kill him. I believe his quote was "he's a tough motherfucker." I'm no Castro defender, but I can't see getting exercised over that.
Now that I've been forced to click through to the article, Guillen clearly wasn't saying that Castro is an asshole, so you can disregard my previous post.
I find the whole episode kind of weird. Guillen's words, although stupid, shouldn't have caused such a kerfluffle. Who was harmed by those words? The Cuban population in South Florida is too fucking sensitive.
Not that I would ever advocate violence, but Cuban exiles in Florida have had 60 years to figure out how to get rid of the asshole, but have failed to do so.
That is kind of how I feel. If the Cubans want to live in shit, that is their problem. And just how did they manage to let this asshole take over the island in the first place?
That is the $64K question. I really don't know the history of the events. I know Batista was an asshole, and many people probably thought Castro was going to be better.
I'll leave it to other Reasonoids. Can anyone suggest a book that is a good, accurate history of the Cuban revolution?
"Not that I would ever advocate violence, but Cuban exiles in Florida have had 60 years to figure out how to get rid of the asshole, but have failed to do so."
I think that was the point that pissed the Cubanos off. The only way to piss them off more is to confuse them with Puerto Ricans.
It would have been better if Ozzie had been hired by the Dodgers as their manager. Castro lovers are welcome in Hollywood.
