Please Register Now to Comment at Reason.com!
Effective immediately, Reason.com is requiring registration for visitors who want to make comments on articles and Hit & Run posts.
While visitors will always be able to browse our pages without registering, if you want to comment on an article, you will need to register using a valid email address and creating a unique user ID. The process will only take a minute and any information will only be used to verify the identities of particular commenters and to manage your registration. It will not be used for promotions, email lists, or anything else without the permission of recipients.
We're switching to registration as a condition for commenting for two reasons. Over the next few months, we'll be rolling out an enhanced Reason.com – with a new look and a lot of new features – and registration will allow visitors to control and personalize their experience. As important, we've also noticed significant increases in spam, anon-bots, spoofers, trolls, and worse showing up in our comment threads (our regular readers have noticed it, too).
Registration will help us weed out the bad stuff while keeping Reason.com comment threads as lively and wide-open as possible.
To register:
- Visit the following URL: http://reason.com/users/register
- Enter your name, a valid email address, your commenter handle, and a password.
- You will then receive an email at that address with a unique URL. Click the link to complete your registration.
- You can now comment while logged in using your email address and password.
Our comment threads will be open to anybody who registers and we'll continue our practice of moderating the comments as little as possible (we do reserve our right to delete any comment at any time for any reason). We value our uniquely active community of readers and commenters, and we look forward to maintaining Reason.com as the premier spot for wide-open, full-contact libertarian debate and conversation.
Once your account is active, you can stay logged in and return to post comments anytime. Or you can log in and out whenever you want. And as we roll out the new Reason.com, you'll be able to tailor the site to your preferences.
Thanks for your cooperation.
If you have any questions about or problems with the registration process, please email us at registration@reason.com.

Tap. Tap. Is this thing on?
You were supposed to say Fist!
It's the dawning of a new age, heller. The dawning of a new age.
How the mighty have fallen.

Things have not been the same since Balko sold out to Big Huffington.
Mary sent me her farewell video:

Ha!
Hope we can still use one-off spoof handles to support our comedic stylings.
Let me check. Yup.
Sweet
Hot diggetty!
Somebody shed some light.
How?
STEVE SMITH will welcome this news.
Ah, I found it.
Reason is dead. Long live Reason!
I feel like this is just the beginning.
We've only just begun.
About damn time.
STEVE SMITH FIND REASON MODERATORS AND RAPE UNTIL GIVE STEVE SMITH ACCOUNT
Now I can gambol in peace!
Is this thing on? Testing...testing...can everyone hear me?

Oh look. The spam filter still sucks balls.
SugarFree doesn't need to send a test comment.
Vote SugarFree for Moderator.
How about SugarFree for Immoderator?
Vote SugarFree
An Immoderate Man For Moderate Times
Excellent. You are getting a plum ambassadorship after the election, somewhere warm with plenty of cheap booze.
I'm sure the arrogance of my esteemed opponent is plain for you to see, which is something you would never hear from a plain spoken Moderator as myself.
Free ice cream!
I want a pony! Which one of you will give me a pony?
My little darlin', the only thing Mr. Free will do with that pony is to slay it in front of you and then feast on its flesh, right there on the spot.
Not ony will you receive a pony from me, but also the means to protect it from the deadly fangs of my opponent.
Mr. Free sounds like a bad man. You can be my daddy
I am a bad man. But sometimes you have to be bad in order to fight evil. I don't expect to be welcome in the paradise I will bring about. But I will still be here if your perfect world ever needs me.

(BTW, link button on reasonable didn't work! Amakudari, I tried to embed a link on the words - instead of embedding I jumped to the top of the page)
I had to fix something because the site update broke things a wee bit.
Version 2.0.3 should work just fine. You can force an update using chrome://extensions.
Thanks! I hope one of the enhancements Reason is threatening to roll out includes the power to buy virtual drinks for each other - you deserve a shout or two for doing this
+1
Well, it does have an alternate beerware license.
Amakudari, I love you.
You've convinced me, and all others in the pony-slaying block. SugarFree has my vote!
What do you want that pony for?
🙂
And I'm back. Good to see you good buggers are here.
Thank you Reason for making this change.
You beta-cell challenged hedonist! Why, oh why should I support you for moderator?
Saccharin Man, Eater of Feti....
Saccharin Man, Raper of Worlds....
Saccharin Man, Molestor of Ferns....
Saccharin Man, He Who Feasts of Geriatric remains...
I'm gonna need some convincing, SF.
PS. I hear your monocle is OTC and not prescription! Entitled vermin!
All monocles should be available OTC - there's no reason to have to see an optometrist every time you order a new one if your setting haven't changed.
Maybe you're just a stooge of big eyeglass.
Whoa now. I'm okay with a registration system, but what you're proposing sounds eerily similar to chattel slavery.
Well, since we already live in a chattel democracy...
Thank you! I had recently been reading the comments less and less... and less. Hopefully this measure helps.
My old handle doesn't fit anymore. Thus passes 'cowardly commenter some guy', son of 'anonymous commenter some guy'.
It's worth it to see how Caucasian Sub-Asian will handle things. I hear there's a Firefox add-on that will cut out his drivel?
Eat a bag of dicks. You suck!
FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCCCCCCCCCCCCCKKKKKKKKKK
"You must have and account and be logged in to comment."
Oops.
Fixed.
God. Damn. It.
This is sad.
Dittoes.
Proof that anarchy doesn't work?
It's worth it to see how Caucasian Sub-Asian will handle things. I hear there's a Firefox add-on that will cut out his drivel?
Firefox has INCIF. I maintain reasonable (source), which is version 2.0 as of about a minute ago.
It now lets you filter the content of posts and use regular expressions. So if you don't ever want to see the phrase "libertard" because you know it will be immediately followed by something mindnumbingly stupid, you can.
(Also added character count and the ability to unthread comments into chronological order.)
Thank you. It is a great tool.
It is a truly great tool. Thank you.
There needs to be a Nobel for Awesomeness created, just for reasonable.
Amakudari is a hero. A shining beacon to all those who would oppose us.
My hero is Mike Alissi!!!!! All is fixed! I'm back in my proper labcoat!
If only dealing with taxation was that easy....
Seriously. Worth switching back to Chrome even.
Wow, even more features. Thanks!
Reasonable got me to start using Chrome full time as a browser.
"Those who give up essential liberty for a little temporary safety deserve and will have neither."
Yeah, REASON. This is practically the Patriot Act of comment sections. That may be slightly hyperbolic.
I thought it was an acceptable market solution to the free-rider problem. 😉
Now that we have registered, can we shitcan the 900 character limit?
Seconded
+901
yay!
You know who else made people register?
Gawker?
Does that site even have articles any more? They seem to post very little content these days.
Even their articles are content-free.
PARNEE DELENDA EST
Caesar Augustus and Quirinius?
+1
Senator Robert Kelly?
Bed, Bath & Beyond?
Sigh. I hope this helps.
Thanks, reason. I might start reading on the weekends again.
Thank you for the email letting me know about this. Very thoughtful!
I concur. I thought that was a really nice touch. Makes me glad I actually used an email address.
Oh, and Matt, Nick, Mike A. and everyone else who contributed to the New & Improved H&R...THANK YOU.
HUZZAH!
I'm torn. I've been lurking/occasionally posting since '05. I loved that this was the last place that gave absolute free reign to the commentors.
But shit was getting ludicrously out of control. As long as we can still use joke handles I'm fine.
Let the games begin. Anew.
I have a "joke handle," if you take my meaning.
Somebody took the name "Johnny Longtorso" already. Not cool, guys. I shouldn't have been allowed to preempt SugarFree or Warty if I beat them to registration.
You might want to check any email addresses you've used in the past to comment with that name. You may have received an email at that address indicating that your preferred username was being held.
I don't see emails from Reason about it.
Part of the issue is I never put a (visible) email addr on my posts.
Plus I have to run scripts to post and this site slooooooows down quite a bit when scripts run.
Someone got my handle too. Fuckers.
Can I haz blink tags now?
I'll be this now. Maybe 'General Butt Naked' later if no one takes it.
More like NCO Butt Naked. 🙂
meh
Just making sure my logon was working alright. Thank You!
So will Lonewacko be allowed to return? 🙂
Done.
Wow, it's harder to comment on Reason than it is to donate to Obama's re-election campaign from an overseas address.
This is a test. This is only a test.
Test number 2
Sweet. Spoof handles live.
There really ought to be a link to the "change settings" page though. As it is it appears you have to log out and then log back in to change anything.
If you are logged in, click your username where it says "You are currently logged in as R." right above the comment box. That will take you to the page to modify your settings without having to logout/login.
That actually wasn't there when I posted that comment. They must be fixing things as they come up.
I will miss bi-bot, tho .... sometimes his/her/its comments were actually amusingly spot-on ...
I wonder what we're going to do without a little anon-bot in our lives. His comments were always so insightful.
This has some level of suckage in it. The totally freewheeling nature of the comment threads with the deranged regulars has always been highly entertaining to me.
But, I'm happy they did it. The spoofing was getting out of hand.
They still let Warty post, so it can't be all bad.
Yeah, if this finally kills the anarcho-primitivist griefer, I'll finally be able to start reading the comment threads again.
I was worried this morning that the Metroplex Messenger of Muddle might have gone through and taken almost all of the regulars' names with her no doubt enormous stable of email addresses, but luckily it doesn't seem as if that happened.
Thankfully, email addresses are hard to come by. Goodbye, trolls, right? Right?
Well, not sure how I feel about this but here goes...
Registration sucks, and it makes Reason suck. What's wrong, you people couldn't just scroll past the WI and MS crap?
That takes time, and my time is precious.
So my very first registered post took me to the mobile site and asked me to register after clicking "submit." Not off to a good start. I'd prefer the mobile crap went away.
...To make passwords much harder to remember, and because log-in security is so important here.
Coming soon: registered user deposit accounts.
Hostages. Hostages come next. Sorry little Timmy, but you have to go live with Cavanaugh in case I make one too many jokes about UrkleCare.
I'm going to go claim "HERCULE TRIATHLON SAVINIEN" now.
The Herc hasn't posted since January. Maybe they found the right balance of meds.
Better yet - it found the wrong balance of meds, and choked on its own vomit.
Are you kidding? Herc was our resident poet laureate.
Herc was amusing, unlike the brief spell of CHEMTRAILERs and the long march of the serial shitter.
I'm not fond of the 900 character limit; I think it should be 1,500.
...but you gotta give credit where it's due, HERCULES TRIUMVIRATE SABRINA apparently couldn't figure out how to get past the 900 character limit.
Oh yeah, and thanks, Reason-editors, for waiting until *after* we killed the evil witch to put up the witch-proof fence-thing. Good lookin' out, bros.
Not a bad solution, imho. And after registration has done its job, and the idiots have moved on, there's nothing saying it can't be disabled once again. In which case, it becomes a sort of Sword of Damocles, where you never know when it might be enabled again. That's how I'd use it, anyway.
wow dude that realy makes sense lol.
Oh, thank God. I was worried you wouldn't make it.
What good is a bot without a link?
Since they amputated his link, he's only half the bot he used to be. Maybe someday he'll be a real boy.
Yay!
You even have the ubiquitous missspeling.
Good. Maybe the comments will be worth reading once again.
Just a Q: has anyone tried registering multiple hadles to a single e-mail yet? Hopefully that doesnt work.
No, it doesn't. Getting my handle fixed has been a pretty involved process. Scores of emails were sent, cases were made, and situations resolved.
That kind of sucks, actually. I wanted to register my previous handle too so that no one would spoof it.
Free at last!
Well. This was inevitable.
Hello? Hellllooooo? HELLO CLEEEVELAND!!!
What do we want?
Morning Links!!
When do we want them?
Right now!!
It's obvious that Reason is just shilling for Big Login.
Morning ladies and gentlemen.
Just a note. Someone else appears to have registered "Hazel Meade" (with a space). That is not the real Hazel Meade, which is now me. (no space).
this some sort of double cross trick? What have you done with Hazel!
Others have had this issue, Hazel. There have been reports of an email to Alessi solving it.
I'm already not digging this. The old comment threads seemed to have a way of self-policing, and I think the surge in troll, anonbot and White Indian activity was likely temporary over the long term. Now we'll be seeing a whole mess of "this isn't the real so-and-so" claims.
Yeah, I was thinking last year that WI was going to burn out too, but after months and months of 16-hours-a-day incoherence and shitflinging, my patience ran out.
Weird.
Should be interesting to see how that all works out.
http://www.Surf-Tools.tk
*rubs eyes in disbelief*
On the one hand this is a great change and a much needed one for some time. On the other, where am I going to find Three$ome/m@n-bouy/bi-s@x/l0ve if not here?
FINALLY! Thanks, Reason.
Testing testing, 1 2 3
Second (third? hundredth?) the praise for this development. I was also visiting less because of the (living?) spambots/trolls/etc. that cluttered the discussion.
They better not fucking sensor or put posts through word filters. It was the main reason why I decided to read reason: Because they practice what they preach.
It's their private property, so they can control, censor, ban, etc. as they wish. That's still consistent with libertarian philosophy. But I too am glad they give more free reign and don't require comment approval or some junk.
I don't mind the registration, BUT -
Damn it I don't want an "enhanced Reason.com." Despite the clean simple look here (which I like) this is one of the slowest-loading sites I visit, with all the facetwit plugins that load and re-load in an endless loop.
Also I want easy-to-refresh-and-navigate unthreaded comments again.
Hooray! This is the kind of change I can believe in.
Hooray. This will get rid of the spectacular crapfest that so many comment threads had become
waffles are registered and online. Where is pancakes?
And...we're live.
Fuck you. Well at least you're not using disqus.
I would like to thank Mary Stack, Rather, and White Indian for making this happen.
Who are probably the same person.
I hope they die in a fire... er... I mean testing, testing...
This is a dark day in the annals of sockpuppetry.
I weep for the joke handles.
We're still here!
Our long national nightmare is over.
just seein' how my new handle looks
Please make it so that we can find where we left off reading a thread.
Well, start making use of real threads.
The joys of being an early adopter: short handles.
What, you mean no more threads where the first 150 comments are White Indian making some stupid and unrelated remark about the evils of agriculture and the city-state and 150 replies calling him an idiot before anyone has anything to say remotely related to the article?
What will I do with all the extra time?
I was a fake strawman anon spoofer the whole time!!!
Muahahahahahahahaha...
Oh wait no i am not...
Damn you reason editors for exposing me as real!!!
Damn you to hell!!!!
Wait...
Were the hell is my email address?
Profile configuration is tyranny!!!
Now that we have registration, should there be a "drink if someone says 'registration sucks!'" or something like that addition to the drinking game?
Yes.
Two drinks for comparing it to a mid-20th century totalitarianian ideology.
Late, I know. Kind of a pain to log in with the email addy instead of the username.
The orange login or register box looks just like a cigarette pack warning label.
