I have a question for White Indian and his followers. Under your interpretation of land ownership through use, would a man have to constantly live on his land in order to maintain a claim to it? What if he wanted to go a center of population in order to trade his surplus for something he needs in order to more effectively harness the resources of his land? Surely you recognize that this transaction creates wealth and if the man could not be assured that he could leave his land without it being taken by somebody else then he would have to devout resources to guarding his land that could have better been put to use trading with other men in order to get what he needs and therefore create wealth?

When they did, they received no wages for hours striking, had their bonuses cut and received further penalties. For most serious topics, it is hard to write a good, coherent essay, including a solid argument, and supporting evidence, in fewer than 500-700 words. It can be done, given additional time and effort for polishing. But most of the contributors on this forum, including myself, are not paid to post here. The easier thing -- especially given the shelf-life of most HnR articles -- is to post one's first draft, which may often exceed the current 900 character limit. You'd think Reason would try to make it easier for people to post ... well ... reason. But apparently you'd be wrong. The 900 character restriction (only 300 words, if the average word is THREE letters!) actually encourages the kind of mindless, flip chatter that, it seems, inspires talk of registration, because such trifling postings can be short. It's a vicious cycle.

It put a smile on my face, to see that Stossel agrees with my long published view that health care and education are traveling the same trajectory in opposite directions, meeting in the middle at the point of vouchers/single-payer.

Can we not recognize that health care will end up where public education started -- a textbook socialist system -- and that the sector's inevitable decline from that point will require us to pull it back down the same path that it is following now? Why continue on in the wrong direction, just to prove what good, analogical reasoning already predicts? Why not accelerate education toward privatization and the free market, and reverse course in health care to move it in the same direction? Must we really repeat education's crash and burn in health care to be convinced?

Well I don't know any who do. Many, including me, think it should be subsidized (vouchers) because having a bunch of uneducated kids around leads to more costly problems down the road, but that's not the same thing as single-payer.

Vouchers are simply a method of distribution of raised revenue. If the state feels education important enough to fund it through taxes, so be it. The beauty of vouchers is that they interrupt the funding stream and include the consumer. Whenever compensation goes from revenue collector directly to provider (public education, medicare, medicaid, etc) you largely eliminate competition. Place the consumer in the stream, and let him choose where to spend the funding, allow entrepreneurial providership, and competition flourishes.

I see too many "broad brush stroke" reports from too many "broad brush stroke reporters." "This" is working great..(everywhere),"that" is failing....(everywhere). I've volunteered for 6 years in an elementary school, I've worked part time in one for one year. The "why is education failing?" starting point is the wrong premise...or we wouldn't be able to point to schools where reporters think everything is GREAT! Want to know what's happening in education...volunteer for a few years, go to every PTA/PTO meeting, participate in school activities...stop viewing education through a single lens you need tri-focals to get it right.
