I've heard of it very rarely, but in this country parents could elect not to authorize extraordinary treatment necessary to keep a severely compromised infant alive.

When one hospital went ahead anyway, there was a "wrongful life" lawsuit. I believe the parents lost on what I thought were specious grounds (that the extraordinary measures were "emergency" treatment that a hospital doesn't need informed consent to provide).

You also have the risk, of course, that CPS would swan in, take over, and order the treatment.

But, in theory at least, parents could withhold lifesaving treatment from a newborn. Which is not to be confused with euthanizing a newborn.

I think of it in terms of operating a chemical process. The operator needs to know which valve he's going to turn or which piece of equipment she's supposed to start. Activating the wrong piece of equipment can be very dangerous and can wre kequipment or injure or even kill people. Operators get disciplined for getti g the wrong equipment all the time. Sometimes this results in termination of employment. This is such a basic concept--that you know which house to go to, that there ought to be serious consequences for officers fucking up this fundamental part of their job.

The Bloombergers have been reporting on the "unexpected" shutdown of the VOLT assembly line this morning. It's tragic.

They also are reporting that GM will be offering a natgas flexfuel option on their full size pickups as if it is some sort of earth-friendly technical innovation, while completely ignoring the CAFE mileage accounting benefits. Including the natgas option will help manipulate the fleet mileage numbers in their favor regardless of whether or not any of those vehicles ever burn a single cubic foot of gas.

People have been converting their engines to propane and natural gas for a long time, I believe. I have no direct experience, but I think they claim it is a straightforward switch-over; clean burning, with no adverse effects. I don't know about tailpipe emissions.

I am all in favor of using natgas in fleets where the vehicles all come home at night and do not have to rely on a vast network of new distribution outlets. People have been talking about it for years, but until very recently, it wasn't economically justified.

The CNG exhaust isn't nearly as offsensive in a plant environment as gas....although, of course, the electrics are by far superior to anything internal combustion 🙂

Every cab i was in in Japan ran on natgas and had like zero trunk space because of the big gas cylinder. The energy density of CNG is 25% of diesel fuel so the range of a gas fueled vehicle is severely limited for smaller vehicles that dont have a lot of room fir fuel storage.

Im working on a continuous gasifier design (along with 8 other hobby projects). The toughest part is cleaning and recompressing or otherwise storing the gas. A gasifier that takees 15 minutes to get up to operating temp is no fun on a car.
