I don't like that Paul is declining in that Gallup poll. How it's possible while he polled at 21% over the same time period in another poll is hard to figure out.
Santorum Shoots to The Top
A healthy bowel movement beforehand should create extra room in there, which might help to nix any overflow problems he's experiencing.
Anyway, people talk about how smart Jobs was. Were that true, he'd likely still be alive.
Anyway, people talk about how smart Jobs was. Were that true, he'd likely still be alive.
My thoughts exactly. Anyone with half a brain should be able to outwit a silly case of pancreatic cancer.
That's a disingenuous response. My understanding is that he chose quack treatments (his right of course) in lieu of proven methods.
That's a disingenuous response. My understanding is that he chose quack treatments (his right of course) in lieu of proven methods.
I hadn't read about what treatments he'd sought, so if it's true that he tried to feng shui his way out of it, then you make a good point. Still, pancreatic cancer is one of the least survivable types out there, so even if he'd immediately sought cutting-edge treatments from the best doctors, the odds were still against him.
He had a type of pancreatic cancer, neuroendocrine cancer, that has a higher survival rate if treated properly. Instead of the usual therapy, he opted for alternative therapies. By the time he opted for cancer is spread. And the rest is history.
Yup, his disease had a very high survival rate (~95% IIRC)
Wow. Why the hell did he do that?
SF Bay Area flake.
Wow. Why the hell did he do that?
Who knows. But being a trillionaire, I'm sure he consulted with the best doctors at the best facilities. And when the best doctors at the best facilities recommend a course of treatment for your pancreatic cancer, you do what the fuck they say. And I'm betting that they didn't recommend "alternative" treatments.
So yeah, it looks like Pip was right: he died of the stupid.
Should be:
Instead of the usual therapy, surgery, he opted for alternative therapies. By the time he opted for surgery, the cancer had spread quite a bit.
Would the surgery have left him with a colostomy bag or something? I just can't imagine playing around with cancer like that.
Would the surgery have left him with a colostomy bag or something?
I wouldn't think pancreatic cancer would necessarily result in a colostomy. That said, I hear it's a highly metastatic cancer, so I imagine it could spread to the colon.
He was basically a hippie. The only difference was that he actually did something usefull instead of sit around in a drum circle smoking weed all day.
Maybe he was actually taking sugar pills and Zima. Does anyone know if he watched Regis?
Here are the details. I doubt we know if he was making the right choices or not. We certainly don't know if having surgery 9 months earlier was the right choice, but given the prognosis from this type of cancer, a wait and watch approach with close monitoring might not be too far outside the standard treatment protocol. Any cancer doc's have an opinion?

Assad rumored to be considering using chemical weapons. Would that be the excuse to intervene?
Considering the way the left has abandoned any dissent against Obama's use of force he could probably start J-Damming Damascus tomorrow without any major interference.
In the bigger picture, Assad going down would be a huge blow against the Mullahs and Hezbollah, and Lebanon might begin to pull back from the nutjobs from Hezbollah who are infecting their parliament.
At this point I'm beginning to think the anti-war left was only some recurring dream I had during the Bush admin.
The fact that closing Guantanamo was one of if not the First Executive Order President Not My Fault signed -and yet it still remains open for business- shows you that all this guy cares about is getting re-elected.
If he was told that turning Assad's mansion in to glass would bring him Florida and Missouri he would push the buttons himself.
During a live televised event in which he read something moving from a teleprompter.
A majority of liberals now support keeping GITMO open and drone strikes. All I ask is can they please not waste my time when they scream about fierce moral imperatives when a Republican takes over.
All I ask is can they please not waste my time when they scream about fierce moral imperatives when a Republican takes over.
Like that would ever happen. Leftists swim in hypocrisy. You can bet your ass that the day Obama packs his shit the Paper Mache Puppets will be brought out of the closet immediately.
NO WAR FOR OIL DOOOOD!!!
True. They will follow the MNG model and deny ever voting for or supporting Obama.
We I have always been at war with supported Eastasia Ron Paul.
You should have realized that TEAM BLUE doesn't give a shit about anything other than fighting with TEAM RED, Bingo. But you're young. You'll learn.
Do they have a lot of oil?
What about refugees bothering our NATO allies? Are they sending dirty, uncivilized wetbacks to bother nice white Europeans?
Terrorism? Have they blown up some white people recently?
Come on! You have to give us something to work with here...
Italians inconvenienced by hordes of Libyan immigrants may be European. But white, and more importantly nice, they are not.
Come now, northern Italians are at least as white as the Irish.
::chuckles::
It's pretty likely that some of my ancestors where Scots-Irish, so I get to laugh.
No.
You don't think so? I think a post 9-11 world would freak out over Assad gassing people. I know Saddam and the Iranians did it back in the day. But I think the world is different now.
I'm sorry I read it as "legitimate excuse" but just "excuse" sure but then anybody can cook up excuse.
You may not think it is legitimate. But Assad gassing people would hardly be a cooked up excuse. I think that is at least an arguable reason to go in. Calling it cooked implies it didn't really happen or was faked.
There are many abusive governments around the world and throughout history killing off their citizens. What makes Syria so special that we should intervene?
Cook up as in gin up as in make up an excuse. The gassing might happen but you would have to cook up an excuse to intervene because that isn't a legitimate one.
That is why Assad should use drone strikes against his enemies. You can kill who you want and if photos of woman and children dead come up you just say ooops.
They will probably use it as an excuse. I'm kind of wondering where he got the chemical weapons from in the first place...
Wait, didn't Republicans explain the lack of WMDs in Iraq by claiming Saddam moved them to Syria? Or did I imagine that?
Does this mean my fellow Catholics might possibly not be voting Obama again this November? I wonder.
Hmmmm....Catholic dogma that it's immoral to use birth control vs. Obama dogma that it's immoral to force anyone who uses it to pay for it.
I think Obama is in deep shit over this deal. He seems to be so isolated that he really had no idea this would cause such a backlash. But now he can't back down because if he does the feminists will bring out the long knives. This was an historic political blunder.
^^This^^
Though I would add that it may actually be what he wanted. I find it odd the just a couple of weeks ago the debate moderators were asking birth control questions. Everyone wondered why. Perhaps we now know why. It was to take the focus off of Obama's record and place it on the biggest wedge issue there is.
That's not a bad thought. The media already avoids asking the hard questions about the economy, the wars, and Obama's performance in office. What better way to do it than harping on the same old wedge issues that have gone on for decades?
Divide and conquer.
Keep people bickering at each other over stupid bullshit and no one will notice that he's broken just about every campaign promise he's made and the economy is still in the shitter, and of course the wars.
I didn't wonder why, although I did wonder why Stephanopoulos asked this of Romney?that made no sense. But it was a perfect question for Santorum, because most people think Santorum is insane on this issue. Like, really most people. He would have had to stand up on that stage and say that yes, he thought Griswold was wrongly decided, and not on some technical grounds but because he believes a law barring married heterosexual couples from buying condoms would be A-OK. And I would have had no problem with Santorum being considered too nuts to be a real candidate after that.
A friend of mine insists he's going scorched earth, knowing he can't win electorally in November. If true, things like this could be for giving Congressional Democrats a chance to run away from him and save some seats.
the other problem is that if the press ever decides he is a goner, they will actually start reporting on shit just to keep some kind of fig leaf of objectivity. When that happens it will get ugly.
I have to question the political wisdom of "do something really stupid so your co-party members can distance themselves from you." Especially when the something appeals to part of your base while turning other people off. Isn't it usually better to avoid bringing stuff like that up?
Of course, in this case it's just speculation on my part, based on speculation on my friend's part. However, I have become aware over the past few years that the Obama camp aren't the political savants they were made out to be.
They are really not. What possible gain did he think he was going to get from this?
Misdirection?
It appears they don't have anyone on the team with a read on any group other than their base. Or if they do, they don't listen to him.
Apparently the problem is that Biden was arguing against it, so they totally discounted that position.
Ordinarily, a fairly sensible strategy.
Stealing more money from the kinds of people who cling to their bibles and guns?
If I was going to go with that kind of argument I assume the point would be to accomplish a bunch of long term goals each of which would have been a career breaker.
If you believe that you're going to lose anyway, you don't worry about it and ram a bunch of stuff through confident that it will be harder to roll back than it would have been to prevent if the president had cared about the reaction.
Some probably will get rolled back anyway, but if you do enough of them some will stick.
That you party members could then try to save themselves by abandoning your coat tails is a pleasant bonus.
I don't know if I buy that this administration would believe they were that stuck, but if they did I'm sure they would consider this strategy.
Jake Tapper reports that Biden, Panetta, and then-chief of staff Bill Dale argued in favor of a broader religious exception to the mandate. Obama knew there'd be blowback. He just finds it intolerable that any woman should have to pay for birth control out-of-pocket.
So Biden was the voice of reason. Wow. The country is in the best of hands.
Top. Men.
Being dumber and more dangerously arrogant than your vice president is not a situation that any president should want to be in. The point of VP is to be so over-the-top stupid as to dissuade (sane) would-be assassins.
So what they're saying is that Obama is dumber than Biden?
Of course, the people opposing the idea were elected politicians, whereas most of those supporting are people who had worked their way up being policy advisors. Facing the voters is occasionally useful for figuring out what they want.
Obama knew there'd be blowback. He just finds it intolerable that any woman should have to pay for birth control panty-liners out-of-pocket.
"knowing he can't win" - hilarious.
He is stomping the living shit out of Romney at RCP poll average.
http://www.realclearpolitics.c.....-1171.html
And Gingrich/Santorum are in worse shape.
The self delusion of conservatives is never ending.
Those polls are meaningless. First, they don't go by state, where the election is actually decided. The gallup numbers by state have him dying.
http://campaign2012.washington.....oss/352881
Second, that link doesn't show how those polls were weighted. If you survey a disproportionate number of Dems, you make Obama look better than he should.
Third, those polls are not of likely voters. Who gives a shit what people who are not going to vote think.
Those are all approval numbers, not H2H numbers. Obama could have net negative approval and still beat Romney in some states.
True. But this far out approval numbers are generally the best predictor. If Obama wins, he will win with the lowest approval numbers in history. If history is any indicator, Obama is in a lot of trouble.
And none of those polls were done after this issue blew up. So your link, even if it were valid, says nothing about the damage this is doing to Obama.
I don't care what you say, John. I am STILL fapping to these RCP numbers, and YOU CAN'T STOP ME! HA! HAHA! AHAHAHAHAHAHA!
fap... fap... fap... fap, fap, fap, fapfapfapfapfapfapfapfapfapfapfapfap... Obbbbbaaaaaaammmmmmmmmmaaaaaaaaaaaa!!!!!!!!!!!!!! [plooge] ahhhh
This was an historic political blunder.
I sure as fuck hope you're right. Too many people really don't comprehend the depth of this guy's arrogance, and it would be great to have something to really drive that point home.
MNG keeps saying that this won't matter because most Catholics use contraception anyway. Well that is true. But even thought they want the church to change its doctrine, they still respect the church and want it to be free. I think a lot of people are getting a real view of just what Obama is all about.
Most Jews don't keep kosher, but I don't think they'd be on board with forcing kosher delis to offer bacon on their sandwiches.
That is exactly correct John. You can still respect the tradition and want it protected even if you don't follow it yourself.
It's one thing for us to disobey the Church. We're in the club.
It's another for the government to mandate it.
That article claims a poll showed 55% of Americans agree with Obama, including about the same percentage of Catholics.
No, that is not what is says. It says
A Public Religion Research Institute poll found 55 percent of Americans agree with requiring employers to provide health-care plans that cover contraception and birth control, including nearly six in 10 Catholics.
The poll was about forcing "employers" not forcing the church. So the poll doesn't say people agree with Obama and that is assuming it is even a valid poll with a proper sample.
Although there really *should* be a difference. There's always a group of swing voters that are really susceptible to what seems like illogical arguments. See the Rasmussen poll that shows a huge difference between "should all insurance companies and all plans be forced to cover the same exact procedures?" and "should people be free to choose between different types of insurance plans, including some that cover every procedure but cost more, and insurance plans that cost less but only cover major procedures?"
Around 25% of people have an enormously different view depending on whether it's framed in terms of regulating insurance companies or consumers being free to choose.
Really *shouldn't* be a difference, I mean. Should be the same result for all employers, but it isn't.
It shouldn't but sadly it does.
Stop it. There was no need for your superfluous comment except to have the last word. Where is MNG to run distraction when you need him?
No Sparky. Last word!!! 🙂
As always, Yes, (Prime) Minister got there first 25+ years ago.
The line right before what you quoted says: "Opinion polls indicate a majority of Americans, including a majority of Catholics, support Obama's decision."
Now, I went and found the actual poll data here, and it's a more mixed picture than the article would have you believe. In fact, the article is really just wrong, since the main problem is with religious organizations, not employers in general.
52% of Catholic voters say that religiously affiliated colleges and hospitals should not be required to provide their employees with health care plans that cover contraception or birth control at no cost. Only 49% of Americans in general think they should be required to do so, which is almost, but not quite, a majority.
No, the problem is that employers should have a right to decide what sort of things they cover. The religious organizations just show how egregiously the administration is violating the limits on its power.
That's still pretty shitty that 55% people even agree with that wording.
It's one of those questions where the wording changes things a ton. There's a set of silly swing voters (about 10%) that are pro "requiring all plans to cover contraception" but then switch as soon as it's mention that the Church has religious complaints.
Look at this version by another pollster. Can you explain the massive difference in question 4 and 5 results? To a lesser extent, 1 and 4?
Most people don't pay a lot of attention when answering poll questions and just give the first answer that comes into their head.
And the poll is meaningless anyway. The relevant question is "does this change how you vote?". If it gets a substantial number of people to vote against Obama, it doesn't matter if even a majority think it is a good idea but don't vote on the issue.
Obama's lost many prominent Catholic leftists who crawled out on a limb for him - and Obama just chainsawed that limb right off.
But now he can't back down because if he does the feminists will bring out the long knives.
Just like they did against Clinton for him abusing an intern?
The feminist left is no more consistent or credible than the anti-war left.

Michigan now has a $500 million dollar surplus. But remember kids, taxing too little, not spending too much is the reason why the government now runs a deficit.
I'm still willing to bet Detroit dies in the next 10 years, tops.
It won't die. There will still be someone living there. But amazing how that guy managed to create a surplus when Jenny Granholm was just helpless to control the deficits.
I didn't mean Chernobyl-grade die, but I don't see how it's going to resurrect itself. Even in the best case scenario of some militant minarchist taking over the city, I bet all the shitholes become derelict and fall apart, and more central areas get better, but old Detroit's never coming back.
That is true. But really that is true for reasons beyond their insane government. Detroit was created because it was right in the middle between the Pennsylvania steal plants and the Chicago and midwest natural resources. But really it has a shitty climate and is not a very nice place to live. Now that you can manufacture pretty much anywhere and geography doesn't give you an advantage, there is really no reason for Detroit as it was to be there.
It's on one of the Great Lakes, so there is at least the benefit of ocean access.
the Pennsylvania steal plants
Don't ever change, John.
What will likely happen is the no-man's land between the downtown area and the suburbs will fully give over to wilderness in the next 10-20 years. It's been well on that path for a long time, and once that type of physical degradation sets in, its nearly impossible to reverse as people increasingly get used to the squalor and adapt, because rebuilding what was lost takes more energy than the community has to give. Eventually the suburbs will start to degenerate as well if they aren't relatively self-sufficient economically, because downtown Detroit is going to end up being nothing more than a pissant burg by the lake, no matter how much money Ilitch sinks into it.
See, you just need some vision - once the city enters into a contract with Omni Consumer Products, we can move ahead with plans to bulldoze Old Detroit and make Delta City the future..
Poll: New Yorkers love NYPD Chief Ray Kelly, despite his organizations mounting problems.
Won't Kelly make a fine successor to Bloomberg? Like so many of us, you get what you deserve, New York.
Episiarch made this point and he was right. They just want the bums off the street and the crime controlled. They don't care how it is done.
Obviously, I stopped reading after your first sentence.
That was wise, which I didn't expect from you.
""They just want the bums off the street and the crime controlled. They don't care how it is done.""
That's why we are moving towards military style police forces and most citizens don't care about SWAT raid gone awry. The ends justify the means.
As long as the average citizen doesn't have to deal with it, they don't care.
You can live in NYC and not interact with the cops 99.9% of the time, assuming you have some money and aren't a minority they like to hassle. Before 9/11, if you didn't drive, the chance of you having to deal with a cop if you didn't want to were infinitesimally small as long as you didn't do stupid shit.
There are a ton of cops in NYC, but there are so many people and so many privately owned places/buildings/apartments/clubs that it just dwarfs the cop presence.
I lived in Manhattan, and I also lived in Orange County. Guess which one had way more visible, interfering cops?
That doesn't fit with my experience in Manhattan. Since you have such higher density of population, you are more likely to be in close proximity to a cop in Manhattan than most places. That physical proximity makes it more likely that you will interact with them in some capacity. As a pedestrian that chance goes up as cops direct traffic, pedestrian flow, clear sidewalks, deal with problems, etc.
I had far more interactions with cops in NYC than in any other city I have lived in. They were, however, all pleasant and positive interactions. I guess I could have avoided most of them with little effort, but it is really easy to avoid interaction with cops in a spread out city.
So you two are in agreement then?
May their chains lie lightly upon them and all that.
The lion shall lay with the lamb.
Shut up, redneck Texas hillbilly. The insurrection Tea-Bag militias made Ray Kelly do it! They MADE him!
God bless the NYPD, the bold blue wall defending us from the avalanche of anarchists and Confederates!
Funny though. I know two Carolina boys who are on the NYPD. How do you think the NYPD learned to sodomize a guy with a night stick in the first place?
Bloomberg isn't term-limited any more. He's running until he drops dead.
FBI releases its file on Steve Jobs.
This might be a stupid question, but was Steve Jobs ever accused of a federal crime? Why did the FBI have a file on him? Why do they feel they need to keep tabs on famous people who haven't been accused of anything?
Fuck you, that's why! or something
That is a great question. The only thing I could think of is perhaps he served on some government commission and applied for a security clearance. Otherwise, WTF? I thought the FBI keeping files on famous people died with the Church Commission.
I believe Bush had appointed him for something or other.
Probably to help Bush set up his iPhone.
It was during Bush the First's reign, so back in Jobs' NeXT days.
As TFA says: "The 1991 background check was conducted when then-President George H.W. Bush was considering Jobs for a spot on the President's Export Council."
The money line from the article: "One person (who was interviewed during the investigation) went so far as to say that while Jobs was dishonest at times, he didn't think that honesty and integrity were required qualities for a high-level political position and therefore recommended Jobs "for a position of trust and confidence with the Government."
So they keep a file on him for decades for a job he was only considered for? And then they release it to the public after he is dead and can't object to whatever rumors were in it. Another new low for the FBI. At least J Edger kept his files secret.
What? You expect a government agency to give up information that it has collected on somebody? Really?
Perhaps that would be part of a perfect world, but it's not part of ours.
As for the release it is implicit in the FOIA, and it is a good thing because it is a tool for keeping an eye on just what they are up to.
FOIA: The hippies finally got something right. Just kidding, but not really.
You know what Republican was responsible for lining up Republican support for FOIA and was a leading co-sponsor?
Congressman Donald Rumsfeld (R-IL).
LBJ and Bill Moyers, of course, opposed it.
he didn't think that honesty and integrity were required qualities for a high-level political position
They're not.
The article says that the Bush the Elder administration was considering him for some rent seeking commission or another.
The feebs decided that despite his hippy ways and the uniform opinion that he was only marginally honest he'd be all right for the job.
Top men, I tell you.
It was a background check for a Whitehouse advisory position. Also, there was something form a bombthreat/ransom attempt from 1985.

Gingrich has Santorum all over him? Nevermind, too easy...
Santorum - Secularism leads to beheadings -
What's left is the government that gives you right, what's left are no unalienable rights, what's left is a government that will tell you who you are, what you'll do and when you'll do it. What's left in France became the guillotine. Ladies and gentlemen, we're a long way from that, but if we do and follow the path of President Obama and his overt hostility to faith in America, then we are headed down that road.
So shrike are you trying to make us all Santorum voters by posting the one apparently intelligent thing he has ever said?
Government is great, government is good, let us thank it for our food. Amen!
I can safely disregard any statement Santorum makes about human beings possessing God-given rights because I know he doesn't mean it.
