Kelly Clarkson Endorses Ron Paul

American Idol winner and pop singer Kelly Clarkson endorsed Ron Paul on her website this morning:

I love Ron Paul. I liked him a lot during the last republican nomination and no one gave him a chance. If he wins the nomination for the Republican party in 2012 he's got my vote. Too bad he probably won't.

The response on Twitter was apparently rather negative, so Clarkson published another post rebutting accusations of racism:

I am really sorry if I have offended anyone. Obviously that was not my intent. I do not support racism. I support gay rights, straight rights, women's rights, men's rights, white/black/purple/orange rights. I like Ron Paul because he believes in less government and letting the people (all of us) make the decisions and mold our country. That is all. Out of all of the Republican nominees, he's my favorite.

Kelly Clarkson Endorses Ron Paul Smokes Pot

    ftfy

    1. Bill   13 years ago

I believe she said why she supported him. If pot is another she chose not to tweet, good for her.

      1. sarcasmic   13 years ago

        Your sarcasm filter needs tuning.

        1. Bill   13 years ago

I knew you would say that.

It was the ftfy at the end that made me think it was more than a joke.

Just because your name is sarcasmic I don't assume everything you say is sarcasmical ..........

Damnit Bones, this is a threaded comment, not a list of new favorite words!

Cool, KMW got a job ghost-writing Kelly Clarkson's twitter account.

  3. Restoras   13 years ago

I am impressed by this. Takes guts in the entertainment world to think so independently.

  4. Troy   13 years ago

Who the fuck is Kelly Clarkson?

    1. Bill   13 years ago

Sweet girl. Pop singer with some great pipes. She was the first American Idol winner. Blew the rest of the field away and was able to sing a lot of different styles well. Some of her songs have some good lyrics, kind of edgy (for a 20-something pop-singer). But this shows she's an independent thinker.

      1. Troy   13 years ago

Ohhhh..... American Idol..... I'd rather watch Warty fuck that watch that TV show.

        1. SugarFree   13 years ago

You foolishly assume there is a difference in content.

          1. Troy   13 years ago

Warty is cleaner with his santorum.... er .... ah... so I hear.

        2. Pro Libertate   13 years ago

Fuck which watch? Isn't that rather difficult?

          1. Troy   13 years ago

Warty has his own channel at videobox.com.... You can stream his shit! 🙂

          2. SugarFree   13 years ago

The watch witch, of course. She looks better than you remember, she's been going to Pure Barre.

  5. Warren   13 years ago

    Really? Kelly Clarkson?
Bothering to post this is a giant leap backwards for the Paul campaign.

    1. Sparky   13 years ago

Why, because you don't like her?

    2. Appalachian Australian   13 years ago

Kelly Clarkson is certainly one of the better singers to come off American Idol. She has also remained free of scandal (at least until now--apparently endorsing Ron Paul makes you a racist and a homophobe).

      1. John   13 years ago

One of the better singers off American Idol. That is the backhanded compliment to end all backhanded compliments. I hear she also doesn't sweat much for a fat girl.

        1. Karl Hungus   13 years ago

I hear she also doesn't sweat much for a fat girl.

Well that all depends on how thoroughly you want to search for the wet spot, doesn't it?

          1. Spencer   13 years ago

            Nice marmot.

      2. chris   13 years ago

Voting Republican makes you a racist and a homophobe. That memo was sent thirty years ago.

    3. sarcasmic   13 years ago

Not really. She's family friendly, Disney style. May give Paul some much needed credibility. Or ruin her career.

      1. Bill   13 years ago

Not bubble-gum pop though. I'm sure she would cringe at the disney style description.

        1. sarcasmic   13 years ago

She wasn't cringing when she sang songs for Disney films. At least I don't think she was.

          1. Brett L   13 years ago

For that kind of paycheck, I'd be willing to smile through just about anything.

          2. Bill   13 years ago

She did one song for the movie "Princess Diaries 2" I did not know about that one. Well, enough about Kelly Clarkson for one morning. I think I'll go work on the list of chores my wife gave me.

            1. EDG reppin' LBC   13 years ago

              ^^^P-whipped. *Makes whipping sound*

      2. John   13 years ago

It won't ruin her career. All of the hipster doofuses who are offended by this wouldn't buy her records anyway. I guess maybe the soccer moms might stop buying her records if they take this as an endorsement of the evil weed. But I doubt it.

        1. Appalachian Australian   13 years ago

Kelly Clarkson songs have had more exposure than being copied a few times on mixtapes, so no self-respecting hipster would even listen to her music.

          1. Red Rocks Rockin   13 years ago

C'mon, AA, you know hipsters have no self-respect.

I have a lot of respect for Kelly Clarkson, she is standing up for what she believes in, I am also a big Ron Paul fan. Read up on him if you don't know much about him - he has a lot of great ideas, and is for equality for ALL people.

    1. Appalachian Australian   13 years ago

I feel a lot less embarrassed to admit I listen to Kelly Clarkson and Michelle Branch songs now.

    2. Karl Hungus   13 years ago

Read up on him if you don't know much about him - he has a lot of great ideas, and is for equality for ALL people.

You don't say! Can you tell us more about this Ron Paul fellow? He sounds like he might have some interesting ideas.

Easy there, Stormfront. Here at the Reason, we're all about inclusiveness - not that hateful pap you're looking for.

  10. Appalachian Australian   13 years ago

For a sample of the "bad reaction on Twitter":

@kelly_clarkson Seriously? Ron Paul! Gross. I thought you were progressive. Very disappointed. Might unfollow.

@kelly_clarkson oh my god I've never been more disapointed I thought you were smarter wow #unfollow

    I liked Clarkson's response:

Man my eyes have been opened to so much hate tonight. If y'all ever disagree with something I say please don't feel the need to attack me. I will listen to what you say and any articles or viewpoints you have when you say it with respect. Being hateful is not a healthy way to get people to see or hear you. I was raised to respect people and their decisions and beliefs and I hope you will grant me the same decency. If you don't agree with me simply unfollow me. It's really that easy. I hope you don't because I would love the chance to hear what you have to say but if you're so blinded by hate you can't seek peace and progress then that is your unfortunate prerogative.

There's plenty more stupid if you want to find it, like one "unfollower" of Clarkson who complains about her "hate" yet I run into the N-word in his tweets in about 15 seconds.

    1. Pro Libertate   13 years ago

If he's such a racist, how come there's nothing else in his career pointing to racism? If he's the type to secretly push a racist agenda, then he'd never publish. If he's the type to openly push a racist agenda, then he'd being doing that all the time. It's a little odd to think that he'd take the huge risk of dabbling in racism for the heck of it.

The whole meme of labeling him a racist is pathetic. I doubt anyone who knows anything about him--I include his political opponents--actually thinks he's a racist, anti-Semitic, or whatever other tar they're throwing his way these days.

      1. sarcasmic   13 years ago

The point of labeling him a racist is to get people to not look any further into his ideas.
Ad hominem attacks, while being a logical fallacy, work.

        1. Pro Libertate   13 years ago

I wasn't suggesting that it couldn't work. Just that it's pathetic.

          1. sarcasmic   13 years ago

What's pathetic is that it works.

            1. Floyd   13 years ago

It's not ad hominem if he's the subject of discussion, though.

      2. Appalachian Australian   13 years ago

There's some tweet-bot that just posts lines from the newsletters over and over.

Over at LiveJournal, which I thought got taken over by the Russians, people just post random quotes from the newsletters and then pick them apart.

I think Ron Paul has permanently lost the vote of the celebrity-gossip-following demographic. 🙁

      3. yonemoto   13 years ago

I think he's probably a little bit racist. I'm still voting for him.

        1. Brett L   13 years ago

Whats wrong with endorsing liberty and freedom for everybody instead of a few?
There is no such thing as a racist Ron Paul since he was so critical of the way people had been treated with the drug war. Read his book liberty Defined.

    Ron Paul 2012-

    1. Pro Libertate   13 years ago

Now that you mention it, I thought he did make a big deal about the racial disparity in capital cases once. I could be mistaken, but I could swear that was him.

The Question and answer comes at about 2 minutes.

Paul says the death penalty is applied unjustly. He says: If you're rich you get away with it and there have been too many mistakes so now I'm against it.

He doesn't explictly say that it is along racial lines, but it might be what you want..

  17. Alice Bowie   13 years ago

I'd rather vote for Kelly than for Ron.

  18. Alice Bowie   13 years ago

I have no problem with Ron Paul's Racism. It's not much different than the type white Americans. This country is still run by white people and us people of color need to respect this...and NOT VOTE for them.

In a few years, Latinos will rule...and as Ron Paul's Newsletter states, 'get-back-at-whitie' day is probably coming. ...in the minds of white people. And it's not going to be a good thing.

    1. Brandon   13 years ago

So you're not a principled non-voter, you apparently conflate white with racist, and you can't seem to form a coherent sentence. Was there any chance you weren't voting for Obama anyway?

      1. Alice Bowie   13 years ago

Actually I'm voting for Ron Paul for Republican Primary and Voting for Gary Johnson for President.

I did vote for OBAMA, but he sucks.

I want a progressive. However, I'll have to settle for a libertarian.

        1. James Anderson Merritt   13 years ago

"I want a progressive. However, I'll have to settle for a libertarian."

You may find more "progress" -- that is to say, improvement in people's lives measured by their own standards of improvement -- actually achieved with a libertarian than under any so-called "progressive." Just sayin'.

I support gay rights, straight rights, women's rights, men's rights, white/black/purple/orange rights...

    Dear Kelly,

No need for the usual laundry list of group "rights" (groups have no such rights). Next time, just write, "I support individual rights." Intelligent people (if not your fans) will appreciate you even more.

    Who's High Pitch endorsing?

  22. Blipster   13 years ago

God bless Kelly Clarkson. I couldn't identify a song of hers if my life depended on it, but I have always liked her on the principle that her enterprise employs a good number of my hard-working musician friends here in Austin. Her support of Paul just notched her up a bit.
