You didn't answer my question. To show my good faith, however, I will answer yours:

Humanity survived sans-city-Statism by hunting and gathering in groups. It is likely that groups (is "tribes" too cartoonish?) of people would stake claim to regions for hunting, just like other hunting animals do. Humans learned which individuals were part of their "tribe," and which humans weren't, and they fought over perceived encroachments on each others' hunting territories (this is all horribly over-simplified, of course). As an aside, this is the evolutionary origin of racism, and why it is so difficult to overcome.

Anyway, the advent of the city-State really wasn't that big of a leap from this. People realized that they were more likely to have better lives if they worked together with a system of trade, rather than asserting untransferable ownership of property and just killing each other all the time.

So, basically, my assumption is that mankind has always "laid claim" to property, even long, long before homo sapiens.

It occurs to me that if I continue ignoring the threads that a particular troll has made unreadable, I lose out. In order for me to gain from these discussions again, the troll has to be driven away. But that won't happen as long as it is rewarded for its efforts. It will only leave when it is punished for its actions rather than rewarded. So how can I punish a troll, a creature that grows stronger with every engagement?

I can reward those it wishes to see harmed. From this point forward, every time this troll ruins my ability to enjoy a thread, I will donate $10 to Reason.
